I heard someone running. But I don't know where they went. I didn't get a visual. So there's a second person out here in the woods. Man. Don't give me no line of bull right now. I'm not playing this game. On December 5th, 2024, deputies in southern Illinois responded to a developing situation after a vehicle fled from a felony traffic stop in Washington County. The vehicle, a white Nissan Rogue with New York license plates, was speeding along the interstate as multiple agencies attempted to locate it. At the time, officers only knew the SUV had suddenly fled the stop, triggering a pursuit across multiple counties. How the situation escalated and where the chase would end was still unclear. >> [screaming] >> Who's in the car? Just you? Who else is in the car? You want to take him in the backseat? Hey, who else is in the car? Who else is in the car? You want to go and pick up the police? >> As deputies approached the wrecked white Nissan, they spotted a man standing near the driver's door. Officers quickly exited their patrol vehicles with weapons drawn, giving clear commands for him to show his hands and step toward them. The suspect complied and was immediately detained. While securing him, deputies heard the sound of someone running nearby, but couldn't immediately see where the person went. I'm good up here. I don't see anybody else up here. The trunk's There's a bag. Trunk's clear? There's a bag in the backseat. Got it. Yep. No, hold on. Let me get the back here right and clear it. Step out. We're going to get out of the way of it. I heard someone running. But I don't know where they went. I didn't get a visual. After realizing someone may have fled the crash site, deputies called for additional units while continuing to secure the area. The suspect who had been detained near the vehicle was placed in handcuffs and escorted to a patrol car. As officers positioned him in the backseat, they continued discussing the possibility that another person had run from the scene, prompting deputies to begin coordinating a search of the surrounding area and nearby properties. All right, let me shut off my siren. We need to get units over there. Well, who are you with? We need to get units over there. I don't know what over there is, but I'm pretty sure somebody fled on foot. You guys have a dog? Anybody got a dog? Probably. I don't know for sure. Do you need EMS? >> [snorts] >> As additional units arrived, deputies expanded their search to nearby homes and buildings along the interstate. Officers knocked on a residence's door and explained that a suspect had fled from a nearby crash, asking if anyone had come onto the property or if any areas such as a shed, camper, or RV were unlocked. The resident directed deputies to a camper-style vehicle parked nearby. Officers carefully checked the vehicle, which had a small living setup inside, to make sure the suspect was not hiding there. It's police. Police department. Police department. Listen, hey, we had someone flee from a traffic stop right here. Yeah. What What's unlocked here? No one's in there with you, right? Only my husband. >> That's That's fine. What What out here is unlocked? Um you want me to double-check for you? I can give you the key. I'll I'll I'll check them. I think the camper's unlocked. We're going to check it because he >> you keys just in case. Okay, give me just a second. Let's check the camper first cuz he ran he's just right there on the interstate. That'll be the first thing he >> think he can get to my um garage cuz it's got a keyed lock. Perfect. A perfect. >> the shed, and the camper could be open. Okay, we'll we'll take care of it. I'll come back. Just lock your doors, please. I don't. Got a radio. U.S. Marshal Service. If you're in here, come to the door. What you got? You see anything? Uh I've got something blocking my field of view. Opens up to a kitchen area. You ready to go in? Yep. U.S. Marshal Service. If you're in here, make yourself known. Clear. I'm in here. Let's go this way. I'm going past. You got it? >> Yep. Ooh, oh, check this. Clear. Clear. Go up for me. We're good. Hey. You good? Clear. All right, let's go to the shed. While the search continued, deputies questioned the suspect detained at the crash site, asking who had been driving and how many people were inside the vehicle. The man claimed he had been a passenger and said someone else had been behind the wheel. Investigators, however, already believed at least two people had been in the SUV when it fled, while other officers continued searching the area for the remaining suspect. Who was driving? And don't give me no line of bull. I was driving. So, there's a second person out here in the woods? Maybe. Don't don't give me no line of bull. All right now, right, I'm not playing this game. You're giving me no bull. It was the officer that initially pulled us over. You can have that one. I'll have that. Okay. I initially Yeah, cuz we got the initial driver in custody of Washington County. And then somebody decided to jump that big ass across the seat. It was the officer It was the initial officer that was. Huh? It's the initial officer who did that. Yeah, came out. The initial officer has Matt Matt Addy already. Cuz I was in the passenger seat. You were in the passenger I yes, I gave him my ID. So you were in the passenger seat when you guys got stopped? Who was the third person in the back there? I don't know you guys. They met me. So how many people were in the car total, counting you? Huh? We're looking for two. We're looking for two. Two on foot. Two on foot. So there's two people out of the [ __ ] two of them? As officers spoke with nearby residents, one man told deputies he had not seen anyone running through the area. Despite the extensive search, the second suspect initially remained missing. The man detained at the crash scene later identified himself as Kenyon D. Brayboy. During the arrest, he complained of dizziness and was transported to a nearby hospital before being taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center. Authorities later confirmed that during the pursuit, the fleeing SUV had struck two other vehicles on the interstate, a maroon Ford sedan and a gray Chevrolet Silverado, though the occupants were not seriously injured. Nearly two hours after the crash, officers received information that the second suspect had been dropped off near a McDonald's in Johnston City, Illinois. Officers responded and took him into custody without incident. >> US Marshal Service agent, if you're in yourself known. I'm going. US Marshal Service, if you're in here, make yourself known. What's the address? Yeah, we're going back there. Take two Take two up. Let us know what you got. Is that all you got? All right, cool. We're good up here. What's up, man? You How long How long you've been here? Just a few minutes. I'm looking for my son. He's 17 years old and he's been missing school and he ain't been home in 4 days. >> Yeah, this is a different deal. Uh did you see a black male come running in here? No, man. Nope. Nope. Nope. >> Nothing? Nope. Okay. I've been here probably 10 minutes. >> Okay, perfect. Nobody in He's been here about 10 minutes. He hasn't seen anybody. >> Nobody's come in. Okay, thank you. Thank you. Can't imagine he got in the water. You know what I mean? He's going that way. And go up and go around up that hill. I went into the front side and talked to a guy. I I'm going to go back talk to this this couple because we checked the RV. It was open. >> We've already checked the The You did Okay, cool. Perfect. Was it you guys that stopped the car? Yeah, so me and I got a part of our interdiction group and he had him stopped. I was coming out to him. Soon as I got out there, that mother jumped in. He or he jumped I guess he jumped from the back. It looked like he jumped from the passenger seat over. So, this guy's definitely not the driver. Uh but the dude in the back jumps into the front and then hauled off. So. Whisper stop or you guys just just stop? >> No, no, he had him on something. Uh but he had probable cause once he got up to the vehicle, he smelled I mean you could smell the cannabis rolling out of it. So, but Come on, man. Get out of here. Get the pressure off those cuffs.
