Excuse me, please, officer. Stop right there. >> On June 16th, 2023, deputies in Genoa, Wisconsin, responded to a call about a man whose family was worried about him. His name was William Boardman. His family told deputies that Boardman was extremely paranoid and appeared to be going through a mental health crisis. Deputy Bradley Brugeman arrived at Boardman's home and tried to talk to him. >> Explain to me what's going on. >> Uh they left supposedly. >> for a second while I talk to you? >> They left supposedly. Deputy Jonathan Brown approached the truck and told him he was being detained. He was then asked to hand over the keys. >> Go ahead and see your hands. What's that? Okay. I was asked to stop you for a minute. What's going on? All right. Go ahead and turn your truck off there for me. >> I don't want to arrest you. Explain the whole thing there. Are you saying you want to go to jail? Can you tell me what happened? Can you tell me what happened with your daughter when I was pulling off? Get your keys out of the ignition. Seriously? >> Shoot me. >> The deputy was standing on the running board and tried to reach inside the truck. As the truck began moving, he repeatedly ordered him to stop, but he kept driving. >> Get Oh my god. Oh [ __ ] STOP IT RIGHT NOW. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. STOP IT. Brown stayed alongside the moving truck trying to stop it, but the truck accelerated and began pulling away. Brown was unable to open the door. He then drew his firearm and fired. The truck continued northbound before eventually coming to A STOP. >> SHOTS FIRED. [ __ ] [ __ ] [ __ ] YOU. JESUS [ __ ] DUDE. GOD DAMN IT. [ __ ] [ __ ] AH. AH. We're at 35 northbound lane shoulder just north of Dell Road. >> I can't get in the rear of my vehicle. >> Emergency medical personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured. The Wisconsin Department of Justice investigated the shooting and released the body cam footage and investigative files. The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force. After reviewing the evidence, Vernon County District Attorney Timothy Gaskell decided not to file criminal charges.
