On January 21st, 2023, Sarasota police responded to the 2800 block of Goodrich Avenue for a reported domestic battery. What they arrived to was not a calm scene. It was a suspect already known to law enforcement, already carrying an active felony warrant and with no intention of going quietly. What follows is the full body cam footage of what would become a violent chaotic struggle and the moment an officer pays a painful price for trying to take him into custody. ain't got a warning. >> What did he do? >> What did he do? What did he do? >> When Sarasota units arrived on scene, the situation escalated almost immediately. The male suspect already wanted on an active felony warrant was not cooperative. Officers attempted to take him into custody, issuing clear commands to get on the ground and surrender his hands. What should have been a straightforward arrest was about to turn into something far more dangerous for everyone on that street. >> Hey, give me your left hand. Give me your left hand. >> Give us your left hand. Give us your left hand. >> Give me your left hand. HE'S FIGHTING IT. HE'S FIGHTING. >> Notice here, multiple officers are needed just to control his limbs. He's fighting every command, every attempt to secure his hands. This is what resisting arrest with violence looks like in real time. And with an active felony warrant already on the books, officers know exactly who they're dealing with. The risk level on scene has just gone up significantly. >> Stop. >> He's [ __ ] biting her. >> Back up, please. He has an active felony warrant. Back away from us now. >> I cover. >> Put your hand behind your >> And there it is. In the middle of the struggle, the suspect bites one of the officers. This is the moment a domestic battery call becomes a battery on a law enforcement officer. A separate felony charge on top of everything else. The officer backs away, but the team holds their ground. This is now a crime scene that just expanded in real TIME ON CAMERA. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Don't kill me, crackle. >> Put your hand behind your back. Hey, come my door, man. >> Hey yo, get in my vehicle. >> Cracker, shut up, >> Cracker. That's [ __ ] up, boy. >> That's [ __ ] up. >> It's a hobby, man. Hobby, bro. Help me, man. Help me. >> 25844. >> What? >> 25844. >> That's what call. >> Hey, >> call 3485820. That's >> damn man. [ __ ] >> Why his hand like that? >> Because while he was fighting and resisting, he's holding on to it. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah. Why don't you ask him why he took a chunk out of the other officer's hand for biting her? Huh? >> Ask him that. >> Let go. >> Crap. Shut the shadow. >> LET GO of me. >> The suspect's words shift between aggression and panic, calling for his mother one moment, yelling at officers the next. This pattern is common during high resistance arrests, the adrenaline, the realization that it's over. Officers are trained to stay focused through all of it to secure the subject safely regardless of what's being said or done to them. >> How about that? >> Calm down. >> 20, bro. >> 2020, man. >> Yeah. Let it go. >> Let go of it. >> Let go of the cuff. >> Sink this one down more on this other hand. >> Yeah. I can't breathe, bro. >> This one right here. >> Kill me, bro. >> Youard me, man. >> Yeah, she's cold. >> You good? She's already calling. >> Okay. >> I'm going >> Hey, call your man please go >> Hey, call everybody man. >> I can't breathe. >> I can't breathe. >> Y'all call everybody. >> Can you get away? >> He literally JUST >> I CAN'T BREATHE. I CAN'T BREATHE. I CAN'T BREATHE. >> Chill out. >> I love y'all. >> You got Come on. You need to put it in your pocket. >> Hey, stop resisting. Hey, check him. Pat him down. Calm down. Calm down. >> Calm down. Just calm down. Calm down. Calm down. We can't help you. >> Hold on. Jenna, you want it? Let me get that. >> It takes multiple officers and several minutes to fully secure him. He continues fighting, grabbing at a vehicle, refusing to release his hands. Every second of this is documented. Every command given, every use of force applied is recorded on body cam. Footage that will later be reviewed, presented, and used in the case against him. >> I can't breathe. >> No, just calm down, man. >> Watch your watches on your foot. All right. >> I got to get his other foot. >> I'll be with you. I'll go with you. >> I'll go with you. I'll go with you. >> Hey, stop tensing up. Go ahead. Roll this way. Get up. Let's get him up. Roll them up. >> Roll them up. >> Help. Help. 31. >> He's bracing. He's bracing. >> Hey, let go of the car. Come on. Stop. >> All right. Now, let go. I GUESS WE'RE DOING THAT. AH, OKAY. >> We got to get him up on >> this video. Call rescue. You call res. >> Let's get him to [ __ ] >> We're going to get him to jail. >> Yeah, that's fine. Go ahead. >> We're all good. >> Thank you. >> You good? >> Yeah. No, we're we're good. >> Where's Mike? We got to get her to 1033 though. >> You want to go down to >> Yeah. All right. >> You better nasty on >> better. >> Yeah. Real nasty. Goodbye. >> Go down to the hospital. I'll see you down there. >> This call came in on a Saturday afternoon. A domestic battery at a residential address on Goodrich Avenue. For the victim in this case, what began as a day at home ended with officers on the scene and a trip to the hospital. While the suspect was being subdued outside, arrangements were already being made to ensure she received medical attention. Her injuries would be documented and later highlighted as evidence. >> You go with her. She's going to go down to hospital. All right. >> I just I'm with you guys here. I'm just trying to get >> I'm the owner here. >> Omar, you know what would help? >> You have video footage out front? >> Yeah. >> One of these one of these guys are going to get it from you. All right. They'll send you the link or whatever. >> Can they come and do it themselves? >> Yeah, absolutely. >> Oh, yeah. >> Can you guys just get some info from them so we can get a time window and we can capture that? >> Yeah, >> cuz it'd be super helpful. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> All right. Perfect. Brother, go me. >> Whoa. This guy, this guy's passing along. They don't know. >> You guys got any uh You got any hand sanitizer in your car? >> Anybody? >> Yeah. >> You can wash your hands. Come wash your hands. >> No, it's all good. I'll spray this off and >> it's over. It's over by >> I'll wash it when I get back. >> Garrett, do you mind grabbing it? Well, I'll get it from you. Just grab it. A detail that will matter in court. Officers on scene immediately identify a nearby business with exterior surveillance cameras. The owner identified here as Omar agrees to cooperate. That footage could provide additional angles of the incident, strengthening the evidentiary record before the suspect even reaches a holding cell. This is standard procedure and it's exactly the kind of detail that closes gaps in a case. You all right, Mike? >> Some of the people cleared up. >> Yeah, you're all right. >> I'm clear. >> Yeah, it's fine. Deactivating. >> Rescue's here now. >> The suspect was taken into custody and transported to jail. The victim is transported to the hospital where their injuries were documented and photographed. Based on the events captured on this body cam, he faces charges that include at minimum domestic battery, resisting arrest with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer. The last of which carries up to 5 years in Florida state prison. The officer who was bitten received medical attention on scene.
