Anybody know who this is? >> My husband, Jeff. >> It's your husband, Jeff. Okay. How much have you had to drink tonight? >> Well, too much. Evidently, >> I thought he went inside the store and he hit my car. On the evening of September 2, 2024, shortly after 8:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Dollar General, Jefferson County, Illinois, police received a call about a man who had been run over and trapped under a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found the victim unconscious with severe head bleeding and no response, while the woman standing next to the vehicle, the person directly involved, quickly became the focus of the entire case. Expedite response could be possible. 79. >> That's what I'm getting right now. >> Anybody know who THIS IS? >> THAT'S MY HUSBAND JEFF. >> It's your husband Jeff. >> Officers quickly identified the woman at the scene as Melissa House, 54 [music] years old, who admitted she had been driving the vehicle. The victim trapped [music] underneath was Jeffrey House, 49 years old. Her husband, who was unconscious, bleeding heavily from the head, and unresponsive beneath the car. >> Do you need a bigger gun? >> If anybody has one, that'd be great. >> This is the only one I got with me, but How long ago did this happen? Was it right as we were called? >> 10, 15 minutes. >> Okay. Who was the driver of this vehicle? >> Okay. >> Who was driving you? Okay. All right. Just stay, bud. I'll have to get your information here in just a minute. Okay. We're going to let him make that final decision. Okay. >> So, we have back of the head. You want me to jack this vehicle off of him? >> Okay. You want me to jack this vehicle off of him? >> Back of the head wound. He's wrapped up under there. Nonresponsive. Large fall, bud. >> Yeah, but let's start trying to get off my >> All right, we're going. >> Due to the critical condition, police [music] and EMS were forced to use a jack to lift the vehicle in order to rescue Jeffrey. During this process, [music] a large pool of blood and severe head trauma were observed, indicating extremely serious injuries [music] at the scene. >> But I'm not going to be able to see, so I'm trusting you guys. off the ground. >> Off the ground. Am I off of him? >> Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Did not mean to bump you. >> Okay. >> All right. We're clearing him. He's off. After lifting [music] the vehicle, responders were able to remove Jeffrey, but he remained in critical condition, requiring immediate life-saving [music] measures on site before transport. Meanwhile, an officer began questioning Melissa about the incident. >> And this is your husband, >> I guess. >> How did this How did this >> I don't know. I got him in my car. >> Okay. Okay, ma'am. >> Whatever you can recall, I need you to recall. >> I don't know what happened. I don't even like my car. >> Okay. How were you guys in the store? What What was the buildup here? What was the leadup to this? >> Well, I No, I was with a friend from work. I don't like >> Okay. How much have you had to drink tonight? >> Well, too much. Evidently >> too much. And were you the only one in the vehicle at this point? >> Yes. >> Okay. Where did you leave tonight? >> Were you the one that was at the Frosties? >> No, I went to Yeah. And I went >> Okay. You went to Frosties and 618 tap. Okay. about how much should you have to do? >> Melissa admitted she had been driving and had consumed alcohol, claiming she believed her husband had already gone inside the store when in reality he was under the vehicle. Her [music] statements were inconsistent, failing to explain the sequence of events, and she clearly showed [music] signs of intoxication, unable to recall what had happened. >> I know I don't want to work with you, and I don't understand. And I understand you've told me that you've had too much to drink. I understand that. But we still need to piece together this drink that much. >> Okay. What were you drinking? What types of things were you drinking? >> I was drinking lemon drop martinis. >> Okay. And approximately how many of those? >> I don't really know, sir. I just >> Are we talking three or we talking 12? >> No. It's like everybody gets caught up in the moment and they want you. >> Investigators then spoke with a witness at the scene who provided a detailed account of what he had personally observed, revealing that the incident was far more complex than Melissa's initial explanation. They got arguing back and forth. >> These two are that her the guy was doing all the calling and yelling about my wife and this other my girlfriend and all this back and forth. >> So the other male is in the white car at this point. Yeah. >> Okay. >> The white car. Well, they finally got they calmed down. The white car backed up leaving and it I didn't I wasn't looking then. I heard a thump and when I look back over he lands Fred Eagle on the ground. >> Okay. >> She goes and gets in the car, fires the car up, backs up, turns the fog lights on, and then turn the left one on and turn the right one on and starts pulling forward. There's a dude standing in the door. He's holling her stop. I'll holler stop. And when she finally stopped, she was sitting up on him. He literally rolled over. >> Okay. Um >> he was laying flat. >> So when you hear first, how was male position? Flat on his back. >> Back. >> Was there any blood that you had noticed at that point? Okay. Um >> start bleeding soon over >> Okay. Okay. I heard I heard his right leg popped. >> Yeah. Okay. And >> he's still hollering and she finally stopped. He was sitting up on his left leg, >> right? >> And already rolled him halfway over. >> Okay. >> He was under the other car. >> So, >> according to the witness, the couple had been arguing earlier about alcohol use with Jeffrey reportedly suspecting [music] Melissa of having an affair. The situation escalated when Melissa pushed Jeffrey to the ground, then reversed the vehicle and drove forward over him. This account was further supported by surveillance footage which clearly showed the push before the vehicle ran over the victim, directly contradicting [music] Melissa's earlier statements. >> We don't even that much. >> Okay, we're going to step in front of his vehicle. Okay. >> I know I have too much drink to drive. That's what you're trying to discover. with your eyes. Not with your head. >> I didn't move my head. >> Follow the tip of my finger. Look your eyes. You're all right. Okay. >> Yeah. >> Were you drinking here or were you drinking somewhere else? >> Yeah, I was drinking somewhere else. And whenever we left, they said, "You're not driving anymore." My husband drove here. And then, oh, I went to I was going to go get gas or something. I'm in my car. He's a roof. >> Your husband drove here and then So, you got in the car here going, >> but you never left the parking lot? >> No, >> I too much. I I tried. >> Okay. So, with your eyes open, we're going to go one more time. Okay. >> There's no way that I drive right now. Take a break for just a second and then vertical. All right. When you're ready, follow the tip of my finger with your eyes only. Put your feet together. Put your hands at your side. Okay. And follow the tip of my finger with your eyes only. >> I know. >> It's okay. Just follow the tip of my finger with your eyes a little. >> No, except for I drank too much. >> Okay, I understand that. All right, so we're going to scoot back just slightly. Just stand right here for me. Okay, >> just stand. >> I don't normally do this, you guys. >> Just stand right here for me. Okay, >> my legs. Can you can you do me a favor and stand right here facing this deputy right where I'm at? >> And then stand with your feet. >> The officer moves on to the walk and turn test. But Melissa is not exactly having it. >> Okay. All you're doing right now is placing your left foot on the line and you're going to place your right foot touching. >> I can't because I've been drinking too much. >> Okay. I'll have you go back to the starting position. Place your left foot on the line. Okay. Now place your right foot in front of your left foot. >> Yeah. Your right foot in front of your left foot touching heel to toe. >> Oh gosh. I can't do >> Okay. Did you say that you couldn't do that? And how come you can't do it? >> Well, it's off balance. >> How come you're off balance? >> Because I drank. Melissa displayed clear signs of intoxication, failing the eyetracking test and refusing balance tests while admitting [music] she had drunk too much. She was immediately placed under arrest for DUI and transported to the hospital for blood and urine testing under a court order. >> I have a no. Okay. >> Okay. So, ma'am, at this time you are going to be placed under arrest for DUI. Okay. Um, what I'm going to do next, we're going to go up to the hospital. They're going to need to get blood and urine from you and they'll have to submit that. Do you have any injuries? >> I I refuse. >> Okay. You refuse? >> Okay. Okay. All right. Have place your hands behind your back, please. >> I like my hands. Please tell me. >> If I find something out, I'll tell you. Okay. Um, I'll follow you up there and help you get a warrant. >> Okay, sounds like a plan. >> Head out to the crossroads. >> Okay, >> I'm going to go meet up with my master and let him know what's going on. >> Okay, sounds good. Hang on just one second. >> Jeffrey was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, but due to the severity of his injuries, he later died at the hospital. Meanwhile, Melissa was [music] taken to a medical facility for testing, repeatedly asking about her husband's condition and appearing distressed, though the events had already been clearly established [music] through evidence and witness testimony. >> Being professional, but in the same token, I've got feelings. >> No, I understand that. But, >> okay. >> But we've got my husband. >> Yes, we've got >> I've never I don't even know how we got here. Sorry. >> Right. No, and I understand that. But I do have to run off of their standards. >> Well, my husband would have never How did he I don't even know how he got passed out. He had to pass out at some point, right? >> I'm I'm not I'm still fuzzy on all of the circumstances. >> My husband is not like a He's a strong individual. Trust me, sir. I've been with you for 20 plus years. Mhm. >> Melissa repeatedly asks for an update on her husband's condition, but at this point, investigators also appear to be in the dark. >> I'm sorry, ma'am. I don't I don't know anything. I'm just here to collect specimens. I'm so sorry. My husband is a strong individual. I don't even know how this all occurred. >> They just did that. Okay. >> When I was looking through the window, >> I thought he went inside the store and he car I'm not sure what they have. >> Now, if you want to verify with them, by all means, cuz I was I was watching them open whenever I walked by the window. >> Never in my life whenever anybody >> I understand accidents happen. >> No, it's not. I just don't even know how we got here. >> He was living when we left the scene. That's the last thing I knew. >> I wish I had more information for you, but they don't. You got to talk to somebody who's more upset. >> He's not even at this hospital. So these guys don't even know who >> they I mean they put him in a helicopter, right? >> So >> I don't know why it's so bad. >> Well, he had a very weak pulse is why we sent him. >> Oh god. >> This girl. Hey, Melissa. The sooner I can get this done, the >> I don't care right now. >> I'm so concerned about her. >> I know you are. [clears throat] [laughter] >> Okay. So this is a lot of fight between that makes >> how do we get [laughter] God can we go ahead and get this straw? I promise you the second the second that I know information you will know that information. I promise. >> I'm here TO MAKE YOUR JOB EASIER. I know. I promise. >> Oh, no, no, no. It's completely It's completely understandable. >> Yeah, that's your husband. We completely understand. But the sooner we can get this done, the sooner we can get you more information. Okay. >> I'm going to try to be arrested for something that >> Following the investigation, Melissa was charged with firstdegree murder and aggravated DUI based on the sequence of pushing the victim down and then running him over with a vehicle along with confirmed intoxication at the time of the incident.
