What's going to happen is in about 5 seconds you're going to hand get in handcuffs. >> What are you going to do? We're going to arrest you for disorderly conduct. How's that? Thank you so much. On April 1st, 2024, Tampa Airport Police responded to a disturbance after a woman forced her way onto a commercial aircraft despite being denied boarding by airline staff who had observed signs of intoxication. Before staff could complete the required conversation, she ran down the jet bridge and boarded without authorization. Officers arrived and were briefed, but jurisdictional protocol required an airline supervisor to board first before law enforcement could follow. to board and I just observed her because obviously she's drunk and I I just watched her and then she ran up the jet bridge to go get a bag because she left her bag at Gasperilla. Then I was going to have a conversation they know she's been drinking blah blah blah. Well, I told her she wasn't going to board until we had a conversation. She ran down the jet bridge and kept going after I told her repeatedly to come back up here and continue. Now she refuses to get off the aircraft. So we're we're moving her off the aircraft, but she will not come off the aircraft. So that is what you're walking into. I guess we have to wait. Well, Tony's on his way. Well, we got a supervisor on the We can go down with her. She won't go on the plane. >> just can't go on the plane. Officers positioned themselves in the aisle behind her. She refused to move, insisting she had done nothing wrong, and demanding a formal explanation before cooperating. The supervisor advised that her prior behavior had raised safety concerns. She denied this and continued to resist. Officers then warned that if she did not exit voluntarily, the remaining passengers would be deplaned and she would be physically removed. All right. Come on. Stop, Lauren. Can you please >> Yeah. Why does an airline have the capacity to have a conversation with people and they they're just [ __ ] cuz they have to sit there and work every day. They don't understand that other people work harder and they work differently for money. It's so [ __ ] up. And you know it. What are you guys going to do? You're going to take me downtown? Except for speaking up for myself and he only spoke up for himself. He spoke up for himself. He didn't speak up for himself or anybody else or anything wrong. And this black woman at the beginning of the airline did not like me and she did not like that I was first class. She did not like that I was up front and she wanted to slander me. She wanted to say all these things about me. It's [ __ ] up and she should be fired. And American Airlines should be sued for the way I'm being treated. It's so [ __ ] up. I need you to bring me somewhere else than where you bring everyone else because I do not belong where it is that you think that I belong. Period. If you do not bring me with there, I will sue the [ __ ] out of you and your department. Period. Thank you. I want to be comfortable. I'm not a criminal. Period. Don't think of her for a second second that I don't recognize that you and your partner here that's driving are human as well as I am. military wife But this is how you guys are treating me. Are you kidding me? Go home and like get your wife, do the same thing to her. If she speaks her mind and somebody at the airport that's black doesn't like her. Yeah, you heard me, racist. Put it on record, mother You. Huh. What? I might have my hands behind my back, but I guarantee you I'll see you in court in a few weeks, mother What you get paid in a week, I make in a day. Period. Come on, Lauren. >> [snorts] >> No. I want somebody that did not drive me here to ask me to get out of the car and I would be okay with that. Let that be known. Well, he didn't drive He didn't drive you over here. As long as it's not anybody that was in this vehicle on the way here. Do you understand what I'm requesting? Come on, Lauren. You can step out on your own. >> I will request I will step out on my own happily with somebody that did not drive He's right here. He's right here. I want him to come here He's right here. Look. and ask me to come out of the vehicle. He's right here. Come on, ma'am. Let's come out so we can get it done. Come on. Can you come here? No, I just want to one hand, please. Thank you. Just follow him in, ma'am. Thank you. What is your name, sir? I'm Deputy Fair. Thanks, buddy. >> You're following, okay? No, listen. You do not HAVE TO LISTEN. STOP. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STOP. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO YOU ARE BEING SO [ __ ] UP. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WILL YOU TELL him not to GRAB ME LIKE THAT? YOU GUYS ARE SO GENTLE. TELL THEM TO NOT GRAB ME LIKE THAT. YOU'RE SO [ __ ] UP. STAND OVER HERE. STOP. STOP. YOU STOP. YOU STOP. I DIDN'T AGREE WITH THIS ONE. YOU HEY. HEY. THANK YOU. RELAX. If you're not going to come out on your own accord Do you want to fill out that form? She did not comply. Officers issued a final warning of arrest for disorderly conduct under Florida statute section 877.03, which requires behavior that outrages public decency or disrupts the peace of those present. She was placed in handcuffs. During the escort, she repeatedly protested the physical contact and claimed she would walk unassisted. Officers maintained control throughout standard procedure following demonstrated resistance. Lieutenant Porter conducted a calm pat-down search without incident. During transport, she alleged a black female airline employee had targeted her due to her presence in first class and characterized the incident as racially motivated. No evidence visible in the footage corroborated these claims. She threatened civil litigation against officers citing badge numbers 146 and 111. At the detention facility, she refused to exit until assisted by a different officer, a request that was accommodated. She was charged with disorderly intoxication under Florida statute section 856.011. This incident offers clear lessons for every party involved. The first and most consequential, running down the jet bridge before any conversation could take place, was the single decision that made everything else inevitable. A 2-minute discussion at the gate would almost certainly have resolved the matter without arrest. Impulse, not injustice, drove this outcome. Knowing one's rights and exercising them effectively are two different things. Each additional refusal compounded her legal exposure. Compliance in the moment does not forfeit any right, it simply keeps more options available. Purchasing a seat does not guarantee the right to board under 49 US code section 44902. Airlines may refuse transport to any passenger they reasonably determine poses a safety concern without requiring proof of wrongdoing. For airline staff, when a concern about a passenger's condition is identified, intervention must occur before the boarding door opens. Once a passenger reaches the aircraft, every resolution path becomes more disruptive and more difficult to manage safely. For law enforcement, this footage reflects patient and measured conduct over a prolonged, emotionally charged encounter. Lieutenant Porter's calm command presence at the moment of peak tension is a constructive example of effective supervisory de-escalation. If the subject genuinely believed she was treated unfairly, the appropriate venue is a formal complaint, legal counsel, or civil proceeding, not a verbal confrontation in a patrol vehicle. Serious allegations raised in an agitated state rarely serve the person making them. The broader principle this footage illustrates is one courts and trainers return to consistently. Every legal remedy available before an arrest remains available afterward, but the path to those remedies becomes significantly harder once handcuffs are applied.
