He got a text message from somebody that said I was doing something and he wanted to believe it and hit me in the freaking mouth with his phone. On June 4th, 2025, officers were dispatched to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after reports of a passenger causing a disruption. What began as a domestic would escalate through decisions made by officers, airline management, and the subject himself, ending in an arrest captured on body cam. Officers contact an airport employee who witnessed an altercation near the American Airlines gates. [laughter] No suspect identified yet, officers are still gathering basic facts. They locate the couple at a gate shortly after. The subject immediately signals cooperation, inviting officers to speak with his girlfriend. Under Terry v. Ohio, the investigative stop is fully justified. I think I'm American what? She just said over there somewhere, but I was like, "Okay." I said, "Do me a favor. There's a police officer I walked away. You good? No problem. Sounds familiar. I have I have that's my girlfriend. What the Hey guys. Have a seat. No, bro. I'm having a whole a whole bad a bad bad day. You know that's my girlfriend. I just want to get home and that's it. Were you fighting before you came to the airport or did it start here? It started here. Why? Because we got kicked off the first plane. Why? Because um of an altercation the girl thought she heard him say something and then that altercation happened. A girl like the employee? Yeah, the employee. Okay. So, then she he got to kicked off the plane. Okay. And then so I went with him cuz obviously he bought my ticket or whatever. Right. And then um he came back yeah then he started screaming then we came here he got a text message from somebody that said I was doing something and he wanted to believe it and hit me in the freaking mouth with his phone. So, he wanted to believe some stupid [ __ ] on the phone. >> on his phone. Okay. That you were doing something wrong but you weren't. He has have you have Okay. So, so then he started accuse you of whatever nonsense and it wasn't true. Yeah. Okay. And then what? And he went and I screamed. Okay. And then you were arguing back and forth after that? No, that's when I screamed when I got Oh, you were screaming because he was up in your face. >> No, cuz he hit me in the face with the phone. With the phone. Okay. I don't care. Hey, hold on, babe. Don't yell. Because here's the thing. When you guys were going there to Buffalo, are you going to see your people or his people? We live together in the apartment. We live Up there or down here? In Buffalo. You and him live together in Buffalo. So, you're going home. You're not going to see somebody. Okay. Here's the thing. If you guys if Forget what he's doing right now. You have to remain calm and be chill or they're not going to let you fly. So, like don't yell over there. Don't like get like with it like All right, ma'am. Just listen to him real quick. Sounds good. Listen to him. So, this is where we at. You and him have a ticket to leave. 30, go ahead. This is your passport, right? Yes, we are. Thank you. You've been trying to get out of here all day, right? Any more interaction with us, they're going to cancel all of your tickets and then you going to have to go to Miami. This is the last place you can actually fly out of. Do you understand what I'm saying? I understand. We're going to give you a chance to get on your plane and leave. But no more dramatics. No more dramatics. >> Nobody was being dramatic. Dramatic. I'm not accusing Hit in the face. You're not ACTING DRAMATIC. I'M TIRED OF LETTING THIS LITTLE SLIDE embarrassing us throughout the whole airport. >> Here's the thing, man. You were talking to me a second ago. That's not the way you were talking to me. Yeah, because he came in here. >> I'm going to walk away. Okay, but stop him. You want to talk to Officers separate the parties and interview them individually. A textbook domestic disturbance protocol. The lead officer's approach is patient and non-accusatory, giving the girlfriend space to speak. She is visibly distressed but eventually discloses the critical detail. The subject struck her in the mouth with his phone. Under Florida statute section 784.03, that constitutes battery giving officers probable cause independent of any disorderly conduct charge. Airline management confirms the couple was removed from an earlier flight and has been causing disruptions across multiple gates. Under title 49, section 44902, airlines hold broad authority to deny transport to passengers who pose a safety risk. Management's decision to place them on separate flights is proportionate and legally sound. Officers direct the subject to leave the gate area. He does not comply. He keeps talking, slows down, tries to stay near his girlfriend. Under Florida statute section 810.09, trespass requires a person to remain on property after being warned to leave by an authorized party. The repeated commands from officers and management begin to establish exactly that predicate. I'm going to walk away. All right. So, so let me ask you a question cuz I'm about to deny her boarding, but what about that gentleman? Yes, he One of them got to get out of here. They've been going from gate to gate to gate and probably airport to airport. Whatever they had issue wherever they were at, but they're still together. So, we need to separate them right now. They had issue somewhere up here. She don't want to talk to me. But she's making accusations now about something that happened somewhere else. Now, I don't have time for We don't need any drama here. All right. So, you can cancel it. You can rebook them at separate Yeah. But we want them out. So, he can go first and then she can go on the next flight. Okay. Can you do that? You need the passport? Where are they I have to go to work. I can't go to What's your final destination? Buffalo. Leave her there. >> [music] >> He can go on next. So, no. Nope. I'm making that decision right now. You're not leaving with him. Whatever happened Whatever happened Yes. It's still here. Cuz y'all bought it here. All right. So, right now, you're going to walk out with this gentleman. We're going to rebook you. There's no more questions. There's no more questions. Let's go. Can I get on this flight? No. She get on the next one. No. I will pay for her to get on it. I already said no. I'm I'm a patient Stop talking to her, man. Just walk. Stop. Unless you want to go to jail. And that's a bond. All right. Keep walking. Guys. Sorry. Okay, put your hands behind your back. I'm not even doing nothing. Hey, hey, hey, hey, relax. I ain't doing Relax. Bro, I just fell. I'm pissed off, bro. Please, y'all. Please, y'all. I live all the way in Buffalo, New York. I got a whole flight, five of of of a funeral at 5:00. What time is it? You get what I'm saying? I wasn't going to make it home today. I already missed my great grandmother passing away. Like that's crazy, y'all. Wow. What did you do with the rest of my belongings, bro? What's up to you, man? Everything you were carrying on you, we got. Okay, guys. Can Can anybody talk to me though cuz this is like really like a lot of I'm telling you. Like I ain't never been to jail here. I have no family here, nothing. He's going to lose everything to you. I hear you. Please, this one this one. Okay. This place is calm. Damn, why you doing me like that? All right, I'm I'm What the hell is that? You did this all to yourself. Huh? You did this all to yourself. I told you many times. Listen to me. Listen to me. I'm done listening to you. Why you going to act like that? You don't know how I feel. You don't know how I feel, bro. You said enough. Huh? You said enough how you feel. We know. We know your feelings. I understand that, but you're not saying I did stop. I did stop. You're not understanding what happened. Okay. I did stop. We were just having a talk We were talking to each other right then and there. There's 100% no waiting at her out of here. Bro, what if she has any weapons on her? Well, I think the the whole thing just had to do with him. Now that he's gone, she'll probably be fine. I I mean, now that they're separated and that this is done and over with He's He's leaving. He's holding her down. So, she's by herself now. I don't think there's anything to worry about with her at this point. She's by herself. But come talk to her. We'll do it, you know, together her and me. Make sure. Listen. Listen. Listen. Last thing I want to have is is a fight at 30,000 ft. That's going to create a lot of problems for 150 to 170 passengers, all right? So, I'm going to let you go. I'm going to let you go on board. I'm going to let you fly. Please, just keep it quiet. Okay. If it doesn't feel right here right now, but I understand there was a situation with that gentleman. So, at this point you're going to fly. Just all Do you know what I'm coming at you with staff for with flight attendants for? Okay. Yeah, your your problem is now dealt with. He's gone. You You understand what he's saying, right? Like they're going to let you go, but they're trusting the fact that you're that you're going to behave and and not argue with somebody else later. You know, if you Listen, I'm going to tell you this right now. I cannot be any more serious. If you guys get up in the air and one of those flight attendants says something and you say something back and it turns into an argument, they're going to land that plane the closest airport to wherever they're at and they're going to take you to jail. Well, I I've never been in a fight with a But here's what I told him. Now that dude is gone, you're going to be okay, right? Now that he's gone >> your boyfriend? Okay. Listen, it might be your boyfriend, and whatever happens when you guys get back to Buffalo is up to you. But right now, you said you have to get to work, right? Okay. So, you got to be completely chill. Get on the plane, stay to yourself, take a nap, do whatever you got to do, get off the plane, get your bags over there in [ __ ] Buffalo, and go to work. His problem, he'll deal with it on his own. When he gets there, he gets there. You know what I'm saying? You're going to board. You're going to board at 1:15. The flight is 2:40. You're probably going to board at 2:00. And you're out of here. You know? So, chill. Got to give you your charger. Charge your phone up now. You know what I mean? That way you got it. You're good to go. You're going to have to just chill. You hear me? You're not Don't Don't touch anything on that phone. >> I don't want to touch anything. I just want to talk. Y'all really taking me to the jail? Yeah. What am I being charged Hang on. Can I Can I call my mom? Can I call my mom off my phone? Please, can I call my mom? She's all the way in New York. Please, my mom live in Buffalo, New York. You can take them out. No, leave them in. Turn them in. Please. Okay. The officer commands hands behind the back. The subject responds, "I'm not even doing that." He is taken to the ground and handcuffed. His resistance is passive, pulling back, failing to present his hands. Under Graham versus Connor, force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on scene. The takedown appears proportionate, though officers had time and space for one more verbal attempt before going physical. On the ground, the subject discloses he has a funeral at 5:00, his great grandmother. He has no family in Fort Lauderdale, no support network. None of this changes the legality of the arrest, but a subject in acute grief, mid-relationship crisis, in an unfamiliar city, presents differently than a calculated criminal actor, and that distinction is relevant to any proportionality analysis. With the subject detained, the girlfriend is permitted to board. An officer counsels her directly, "Get on the plane, stay quiet, get to work." He also warns her about the federal consequences of any in-flight disturbance, accurate, proportionate, and appropriately serious. Officers confirm the charges, disorderly conduct and trespass. The encounter runs 15 minutes from contact to transport. The disorderly conduct charge remains the most legally contestable element. Florida statute section 877.03 requires behavior that outrages public decency or disrupts the peace of witnesses. Loud speech and slow compliance have repeatedly been protected under the First Amendment by federal courts. The trespass charge stands on significantly stronger footing. The officers receive a B-. The initial de-escalation was genuinely professional. The arrest decision, however, would have been legally stronger had it led with battery rather than disorderly conduct, a charge with a named victim, a specific act, and a clear statutory match. Mr. Harris receives a C+. Grief, jealousy, and travel stress colliding at once. The circumstances were genuinely difficult, but it's striking his girlfriend, then repeatedly refusing lawful orders, converted a bad day into an arrest record. Airline management receives a B+. Separating the couple onto different flights, rather than canceling both tickets, was proportionate and operationally sound. A physical confrontation at 30,000 ft, affecting over 150 passengers, is not a hypothetical risk. It is a federal aviation enforcement scenario. For officers, the lesson is charge selection. Battery had a named victim, a specific act, and a clear statutory match. Disorderly conduct did not. And when de-escalation is working, when a subject is talking rather than fighting, the threshold to abandon it must be high. For travelers, airports are not public streets. Inside a secured terminal, an airline can remove a passenger from a gate, and an airport authority can order someone off the property. Refusing either directive can turn a travel dispute into a criminal charge. And if an arrest happens, even an unlawful one, the remedy is the courthouse, not physical resistance. The flight was still there, the funeral was still that day. Compliance was the only decision that kept either possibility open.
