We are trying to be calm with you. You need to listen to us. Do you understand? Don't touch me. Grab her arm, please. We can do that We can do that outside. Let's just We'll grab that outside. On October 2nd, 2025, officers at Orlando International Airport responded to a battery in progress. What they found was not a violent stranger, but a family falling apart. A mother, a father, their young child, and a grandmother caught in a dispute that had already drawn police once that day. Hey. Hey. Yo. Hey. Sort it out. Now. Folks. Hold on. Can you decide something? Hold on. Hold on. Who is she? She's my mom. She's your mom? Yes. Okay. Just ma'am, just okay. What's that? 179 179 Okay, so what's going on? I want to say anything because that lady is hurting my baby. I just want to leave with my kids on their Okay, so what She doesn't want me to take my kids' passport. She was grabbing me. Okay, so you so you two are trying to fly out. Where you going to go? So I'll tell you yeah, okay. Hold on, okay? Just hold on, okay? Because I'm not going to sit there and pull the kid away and everything, okay? So we're all here, all right? Nobody's going to go anywhere with your child, all right? We're okay, all right? Okay. So you're trying to fly with your child and you are too, right? You three are trying to fly No, everybody everybody is we're we're just leaving. Is he going too? Yes. Okay, so what's the issue? The issue is that I don't want him to be with my kids right now. And I just want to make an itinerary and line on the airplane and I want to be with my kids. He can't say refer your mom. Okay, so you just want to fly in separate rows or whatever. Okay, I want you my kids' paper with me. You want your kids' paper with you. No, I just want to go to the security with him. That lady and that That's it. Okay, so what >> Can I tell my version? Yeah. Okay, she gets pretty anxious when she talks, okay? So you understand that. The problem is that she went into a crisis today and she bit my mother. You can see her over here. Okay, let's focus, okay. And she wanted to take the kid by herself >> [music] >> to Miami without my permission. Hold on. Hold on. Okay, come over here, sir. Just stop. Just okay. All right, yeah, all right. Go ahead. And so we were staying at Spectrum of Reunion All right. So we had to call security and the sheriff came. So that was like 2 hours ago. >> Okay. Okay. And she said I'll go And where were you guys at when this happened? Reunion Reunion Reunion Reunion, okay, okay. Okay, so all this happened in Reunion. So but now you guys are all going to fly together? Yeah, for Miami it's okay, but then when we got here to the check-in she tried to tell to get the the passport and to take again Okay, well she's the mother, right? And she's trying to fly with the kid. They need the passport to fly, right? >> Yeah, the passport. Okay, so are we going to do this the whole time for the next 3 days because somebody's going to end up going to get arrested or something for something silly because you guys are I understand you you guys have issues, right? But it's not like she's trying to take off by herself on the plane and you're not going, all right? But she took the passport. Ma'am, over there, please. Over there now. Please. I will talk with you again, okay? Ma'am. Come on over here then. All right. Okay. So the issue is this. It is So what's the deal with Why can't she take the passport, go in a different row, and fly down to Miami and then you guys are there on the plane, you guys get off the plane. Okay, I don't have any problem. I don't have any issue and I want just to Right, and I would like you guys to too. I want you guys to get together and stay together and you know, get to wherever you need to go. Just my my my only concern is that right now she's in a crisis. Right. So I don't care I mean she can have the passport right now and then we'll fix it, but she's not in She's in a in a in a like anxiety crisis. Okay. And I don't think it's the best way that my kid stay with his mom with his mom and we can fly everyone at the same time. But that's what I'm saying is it's not like you're sending her off by herself with the kid. You guys are all in the in the plane in an enclosed area. I mean she can't do anything on the you know, on the plane, right? And then you guys are all getting off off the same exit of the plane, you know, there's only one exit, so and then you know, and then after that. So why are you guys going to Miami? Are you flying somewhere else or is No, his her bro- her brother lives there, so she wanted to just like go and stay with with their bro- brother because it's not happening right now anymore that that option, but uh Okay, all right. Okay. Um So no, I mean I'm I'm getting all I I get everything that's going on and I understand you don't want to you know, to keep separating more and more, you know, on these travels and you don't want her to be able to just be able to go off and you know, cuz obviously she you don't think she's in the right mind right now. So all right, so what do you want? If you could say, okay, this is what I want to happen, what do you want to I would ask if I have I can have the passport and she goes on a row and my mom, the kid, and myself go in another row. Okay. I think that would be good enough. >> Which is what you guys were trying to talk about, but she wants the passport and she's not >> Yeah, it's a little more complicated like that because she got it up pretty much >> So what's the So I guess she she's got control of the child, you know, she's in control right there, you know, and uh whether she has a passport or not, I guess I'm I'm I don't see the big deal in it. I mean enough to where we're going to get into something where somebody's going to end up getting arrested or or you know, or something bad happened. Yeah, that that that's the issue because she bit my mom over here, she bit me over here, so now we're talking about something physical, so I don't want to get this bigger and bigger. Right, okay. So yes, if we can do that uh I'll be happy enough just one row for for her and my kid and my kid, my mom, and I in another Okay, what time is your guys' flight? Uh 4:55. 4:55? Okay, all right, ma'am, come on over here so I can see So I can Let me talk to you. Ma'am, are you making Let me talk to you. Okay, you guys are the parents, act like parents, okay? All right. Just let him hold your child. It's not like he's running off there. Okay, so what happened before here? Okay. No, he did not call the cops. Ma'am, he did not call the cops. No, her mother, I'm sorry, his mother. No, she didn't call either, all right? Yeah, a neighbor No, it's because everyone around you is seeing how you guys are both acting, okay? So what happened? Okay, so what happened? Okay, what happened? Yes. I we were packing and they knocked the door and they say, "Can you leave in 15 minutes?" So he was like, "I don't know what to do." I was packing everything. He doesn't want he wasn't doing anything. He was taking breakfast, the coffee, whatever, okay? So we just calmed down and said, "Okay." I was with my kid and said, "Do not touch him like this. It's come on. I'm just holding my kid." So his mother took and his mother took him inside the room and said, "Do not touch my And I was like, "Okay, don't mess with my kid." That's it. The only thing that I'm having this, okay? I'm I'm just was I was working. He wants my kid's passport. So she grabbed me really tight to take my the documents of my kid. So and then what happened? She my my mother-in-law called the cops. Okay. Okay, they took me out the papers, okay? And they were doing me like this. What I I bite him. This was down in Reunion? Yeah. Okay. Okay, then she grabbed my kid and I said, "Do not touch my kid." She she took my kid. Then they called the cops the cops and I said like, "Okay, well, I don't want any problems. I can go." Okay. Okay, they canceled me the credit card while we while while I was talking with the I don't have any money with me because they have everything everything was with them. Right, did the cops end up coming? Yeah, they come they came. They came to the to Reunion. Okay. They they took another car, they go on top of the car. They didn't let me on top of the car. I was going with them, so the cops took me out and they told me that I was he I cannot be there, so my things and go and I don't have any money to go. Okay. So the security of Reunion took me to the publics and I called my sister that lives in California to take an Uber for me to the airport and that's how I arrived to the airport. Okay, okay. And then I was here and I was just want to be in another row with my kid because I don't want her to be with my kid right now because I am the mother. Mhm. Okay, so I was messing that I was doing the check-in and she also called the cops and that's it. No, he didn't call the cops while they were here. No, she she she talked to the lady to talk to call the All right. Well, okay. they took to us and they said Okay. Well, when you guys are starting to take stuff from each other right here and stuff and call the service and they're going to call they're going to call the cops for drugs. Why are you letting him to be with the kid instead of me? >> It's his father. I'm We're taking just I know, but just cuz I'm trying to talk to you. I can't talk to you while you're holding the kid because what's going to happen is you're going to be talking to the kid and so I'm getting everyone's story, okay? So, just hang on, all right? You need to calm down because we're all here. Nobody's just running off now with the kid or anything like that. You guys are all traveling together. And the thing is that it seems like you keep getting what you eventually want, but every time you do, you start to say, "Well, I want the kid with me, but I don't want you guys there, okay? But I want the kid with me, but I want his passport also, okay?" Okay. But you guys are both the parents and you're not being you're not compromising at all and that's the problem. Yes, you're not. Okay. Because they all agreed to fly together and then you say, "Well, I don't want I just want to fly with the kid in the row Hold on. You Did you not Did you not ask to to fly in a different row, right?" In a different row, right? Okay. And they said, "Yes." But then you're like, "Well, no because I want to do that, but I also Hold on. Exactly. So, why do you keep making other demands? They're letting you fly in a separate row. Okay. Well, they're they're going to book you in a different row. Okay. Hold on. They're going to book you in the same row with him, all right? I'm not defending him. What's that? Okay. Did they give you a badge number? The police officers, no, they didn't, okay. All right. So, what I'm saying is if they keep the passport and you're flying in a separate row with the child, is that good? You're a family. So, I don't I'm I'm trying or to realize why you know, what happened before this to cause this strife cuz you guys haven't told me any of that stuff. Okay. Right. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I understand. So, then why do you need the passport then? That's the thing. That's that's that's a one I'm wondering. If you're with them on If what I said if they're going to book with you and you and they and you're going to sit with them and you're going to sit with them, why do you have to have the passport then? Well, you guys are all flying on the same plane, so you guys are going to be there and your son's going to want to see both of you guys. It still doesn't It still doesn't explain why you have to have the passport and the child. Just like I said, you're you're you want everything. He said You said You told me why he wants it. So, that after you guys get off the plane that you can't just run off and go do whatever you want. Okay. And if you just want your child, they're allowing you to sit with your child and you're going to be with them the entire time. So, then again, so why is the passport that important? The only reason that would be is so that you could take off with the child and the passport. What is Would that be not? Okay. That's what I'm getting at. So, He's the child's father. I know, but I can't take stuff from him. Okay. So, why do you get it over him? Okay. What I'm saying What I'm saying is What I'm saying is this. Listen. Listen to me. There's a passport. Belongs to your son. You both have equal rights to that passport since you're both mother and father. Why should I take it from him and give it to you? Because you want it? Okay. Okay. And they're allowing you to be with him. They're just really accepting with the role that you guys are doing. Okay. Well, like I said, if he's got equal rights to property, whether it's a passport or kids' property or whatever, then I can't take it from him. I can't take it from him to give to somebody else. I can't do that. It's because he's it's his. It's because of his son, it's his also. All right. Where do you live? Like where do you guys live? Do you guys live in Mexico? Okay. Okay. Right. I mean, you understand legally I can't do that. That's what I'm getting at, okay? But Right. The father's account. Earlier that day at a reunion resort, the mother physically struck both him and his mother and tried to take the child's passport without his consent. His goal right now is not an arrest. He just wants separate seats on the 4:55 flight to Miami. The officer attempts mediation. He walks both parties through a simple reality. Same plane, same exit, closed environment. Neither parent can act unilaterally midair, but the passport dispute keeps blocking any agreement. Here the officer makes a legally correct call. Under Florida Statute Section 61.13, both parents share equal rights to the child's documents absent a court order specifying otherwise. He cannot hand the passport to either side. That dispute belongs in family court, not at this counter. The mother's version is starkly different. She says the father grabbed her first. After police came to the resort, she was left behind. No money, credit card canceled, separated from her child. Her sister in California arranged an Uber to the airport. That is how she got here. The officer presses her on one question. If you just want to sit beside your child on the plane, why do you need to physically hold the passport? She cannot give a clear answer. Under the probable cause calculus, that matters. At the 15-minute mark, the father discloses the mother has depression, anxiety, and severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder. This triggers a legal consideration. Florida's Baker Act authorizes involuntary mental health evaluation when someone poses a risk of harm due to mental illness. The officer does not invoke it. The mother is distressed, but responsive. A reasonable call. After 16 minutes, the mother refuses to comply with the officer's direction to separate. Soft empty hand control is applied the first force used in this encounter. Under Graham versus Connor, reasonableness is judged from the officer's perspective at that moment. Extended escalation, prior altercation, child present. The response is proportionate. A patrol car is called. Under Florida Statute Section 741.229, once probable cause for domestic battery exists, arrest is mandatory, not discretionary. The grandmother's written statement documents physical injury. She declines to prosecute. It does not matter. Florida law removes that choice from the equation. I'll take a look. What does that say? She grabbed my hands and harmed Harm your arms? Okay. Do you want fire rescue? Do you want to get checked out by firefighters? Are you okay? You sure? All right. So, for me, can you just sign that you do swear? Do you feel okay? Now, and if you do want to testify and prosecute criminally, initial there. It's up to her. She has to fly back here to testify. Okay. So, yeah, that's fine. And just initial. But so, for my sake, it doesn't matter. You want to write a statement? You don't have to write a statement. It is up to you, but you're saying that she started it? She put her hands on her first? Okay. So, again, you're saying she started the physical altercation that took place at the airport. Okay. Okay. All right. Cuz I know you guys had something going on over there. And everything is I guess it's on camera, so the one over there and the one over Does she have any uh you know, mental disabilities? What what is it? It's called in Spanish syndrome histérico premenstrual, which is kind of like Do you understand that? No, because Is it What is it? You can say it in Spanish. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Hold on. Hold on. Is that his kid? Yeah, that's my kid. >> So, your kid and his kid, right? Okay. So, he has the rights to your kid as well. We're still What? It's joint, right? It takes two people. So, you're the mom, he's the dad, right? >> In the passport, they come picture. We don't do anything when it comes to the passport. Do you understand? She can do that real quick. Yeah, just want to get the kid out of here. Look, can I can I go to that flight? I can I can >> No, they don't want you on the plane. So, you're going to have to find another route to another way to get to the next flight. >> I don't want my mother-in-law to be with that kid. Okay, come on. Let's go ahead and check Let's take Relax. Relax. Relax. Listen. Leave the bag on We are trying to be calm with you. You need to listen to us. Do you understand? Don't touch me. Grab her arm, please. Put her arms behind her back. We can do that outside. Let's just We'll grab that outside. The kid is with the dad. Is there a car on this level on the I'm on one. Okay. Ready? Yeah. We'll do the searching and everything outside. You guys good? You got everything you need? I am I am going to yell. Yes, ma'am, you are. Let's go this way. Sit in the car. It's going to be a little uncomfortable, but you'll be okay. The mother is placed in the patrol vehicle without further resistance. No excessive force. No escalation. Title card on the released footage confirms charged with domestic battery. Court outcome unknown at time of this analysis. The officer receives a B. 18 minutes of patient de-escalation. Legally correct on the passport. Proportionate force throughout. Docked for one miss. The mental health disclosure at minute 15 warranted an explicit Baker Act assessment on camera, even if the decision not to invoke it was right. The mother receives a B minus. Two victim statements. Documented injuries. Prior police contact the same day. Probable cause is established under Florida law. The context is real. Isolation, crisis, language barriers. But continued defiance of officer direction contributed directly to her arrest. The father receives a B plus. Cooperative, consistent, legally accurate throughout. One unresolved question holds him from A range. The mother's counter allegation that he grabbed her first at the resort. If accurate, mutual combat could complicate the prosecution. Three lessons from this incident. First, Florida's mandatory arrest statute is not officer discretion. Any physical contact between co-parents can produce a mandatory arrest. Full stop. Know this before conflict begins. Second, custody and passport disputes cannot be resolved at the airport. If co-parents anticipate travel conflict, the answer is a family court order obtained before departure. Not a confrontation at the check-in counter. Both the US and Mexico are Hague Convention signatories. A court travel authorization eliminates this entire category of crisis. Third, a child was present for all 19 minutes of this. For the escalation, the arguments, the arrest. Whatever the legal merits of each side, that is the cost that no grade reflects. Prevention through courts and legal agreements is the only tool that works before the airport.
