OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. 4:40 p.m. May 23rd, 2026, Buffalo, New York. Buffalo police officers on routine patrol near Broadway and Liddell Street were flagged down by a woman who identified 35-year-old Derek Harris as the man who had allegedly stabbed her boyfriend the night before. What followed was a rapidly escalating confrontation captured on bodywn cameras. Police say Harris was armed with a box cutter and a pair of scissors, repeatedly refused commands to drop the weapons, and stabbed Officer Simmonian in the back during a struggle. Moments later, after a taser deployment failed to bring the situation under control, officer Simmonian fired two shots, striking Harris in the torso and hip. But the footage has sparked debate. Did officers exhaust every reasonable option before resorting to deadly force? Or were they facing an immediate and escalating threat after an officer had already been stabbed and the suspect appeared to reach toward a police firearm? This is the body cam footage released by the Buffalo Police Department. [ __ ] What's up? >> Yo, >> WHO >> is that actually him or no? Officer Simmonian, who was stabbed during the encounter, was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital. Investigators say Harris was already under investigation for an alleged stabbing the night before and was later charged in connection with an armed robbery involving a lift driver. Additional charges related to this incident remain pending. Yet, the body cam footage leaves behind questions that continue to divide viewers. Should officers have done more to stop the danger before the situation spiraled out of control? Could different tactics have prevented the stabbing, the shooting, or both? Or once an officer had been stabbed and the suspect continued resisting while armed, was deadly force unavoidable? Many viewers may also find irony in what happened afterward. Despite being the officer who was allegedly stabbed and forced to make a split-second decision during a violent confrontation, officer Simmonian was placed on administrative leave. Standard procedure following an officer involved shooting, but a policy that often generates debate when officers themselves are victims of serious assaults. After watching the footage, what do you think? Was the shooting justified, or could this confrontation have ended differently? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
