What began as a shooting investigation on Cleveland's southeast side quickly escalated into one of the most violent police pursuits the city had seen in years. Just after 2:00 p.m., officers responding to the Open Pantry on Fleet Avenue found a 33-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. But as detectives worked the scene, a vehicle repeatedly circling the area caught their attention. According to investigators, the driver, 24-year-old Brian Branch, suddenly opened fire on responding officers before fleeing, launching a dangerous chase through Cleveland's East Side. Police say Branch fired additional rounds during the pursuit, striking cruisers and injuring officers with bullets, shattered glass, and flying shrapnel. The pursuit finally came to an end in Shaker Heights after a violent crash, but not before five Cleveland police officers had been injured and the suspect attempted one last escape on foot. Now, more than a week later, a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury has indicted Brian Branch on 21 charges, including six counts of attempted murder, seven counts of felonious assault, three firearm charges, and multiple counts connected to the pursuit and attacks on law enforcement. On June 2nd, 2026, a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury returned a 21-count indictment against the 24-year-old suspect. Among the charges are six counts of attempted murder, seven counts of felonious assault, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Branch's bond had previously been set at $200,000 and he was scheduled to appear before the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court for arraignment. Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd later described the incident as an extremely dangerous encounter, stating that the suspect had no care for the safety of our men and women or our community, adding that he could have killed anybody.
