On February 10th, 2022, deputies from the Watcom County Sheriff's Office responded to a residential subdivision in Maple Falls, Washington. Neighbors reported that a local resident identified as Joel Burke Young had been firing a shotgun into the air and making threats after they confronted him. At first, the call appeared to be a tense neighborhood disturbance involving smoke, gunfire, and an ongoing dispute between residents. >> You look like white. But as deputies began speaking with witnesses, the danger became increasingly difficult to dismiss. Young was reportedly armed, appeared intoxicated, and already knew that law enforcement had arrived. Sever >> Hi, I'm Deputy Wrathbun. The result was an unstable confrontation involving two deputies, an armed man inside a residence, and civilians [music] who were about to become unexpectedly involved. What began as an attempt to investigate gunfire has become a suspected attempted murder response. The injured officers are being transferred to emergency personnel, but the man believed responsible has not yet been secured. Officers do not have a clear view of Young, cannot confirm what other weapons may be inside, and must assume he remains in the house. The immediate incident ended at 6:03 p.m. when officers ordered Joel Burke Young out of the residence and secured him in handcuffs. The transcript states that Young was not injured. Deputies Ryan Wrathbun and Jason Thompson suffered birdshot wounds to their faces. Both eventually made full recoveries and returned to duty nearly one year later. Young was charged with several felonies, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty during his February 18th, 2022 arraignment. As of January 2024, he reportedly remained in custody at the Scadget County Jail while awaiting trial. The most unusual part of the confrontation was the involvement of the neighbors who returned fire and helped move the wounded deputies into cover while the threat remained active. The street was ultimately secured. The deputies survived their injuries and the suspect was taken. Sir, you have the right to remain silent.
