His behavior shifts between cooperation, anger, and confusion. So, detectives now need to separate what he claims from what the evidence shows. Do you think the officers handled this stage appropriately? Share your view in the comments as the formal interview begins. >> She wasn't real. >> She wasn't real. I don't know what to tell you. I had to deal with a psychologist giving me a a psychological exam last week on August 1st. And I had to tell her, well, she asked me if I uh hear or see anything. And I told her that I I was in bed and I heard a knock on the door at like 8:30 in the morning. And I'm like, what the hell was that? I thought I was going to be arrested. So, I I immediately get out of bed and I look out the window, the front door, and there's nobody there. And there's nobody around. Like, nobody could have ran away that fast. They would have had to like run immediately as fast as they can run around to the left side of my house so I couldn't see him. >> What do you think you were going to do? >> It doesn't matter because you're arresting me for no reason. And so, and that doesn't matter cuz the knock on the door I I there's nobody there. I'm like, "What the fuck?" So, I go downstairs. My mom's sitting there and she says I say, "What's going on with this knock that at the door?" And she was like, "I didn't hear a knock." So, that's it. All right. So, and then she I hear her walking upstairs in the bathroom and I'm like, "Okay, she's upstairs doing something in the bathroom and she was being loud and I turn the corner and I hear the stuff upstairs and I turn the corner and she's right there in the bathroom downstairs and I was like I was Like there's I was like there's just two of her. I don't know. Why does any of this matter? Why do you want to talk to me, man? >> Cuz we're just trying to figure out >> why >> why things happened the way they did. >> I just told you I have spent too many times in a hospital and that was it. I could not go back to the hospital that night. I had to drink vodka at all costs. And if that meant stabbing her to death, that's what happened. So what? That's it. That's what you're asking me. I'm telling you that's it. >> Did you know it was wrong to stay your mother to death? >> I don't want to talk about that. I don't care. I don't want to talk about that. Do you love your mom? >> I just told you. I have a feeling you guys are just going to start getting so weird on me. I I just could not stand her. I really had a connection with her until she started to act like she was going to kill herself. And that was it. She acted like she was going to kill herself uh last April or May and then that was it. >> And that didn't happen when you were younger. >> Her acting like she was going to kill herself. >> Like is your mom dealt with mental health issues while you were growing up? >> She was so crazy. I don't know what she was doing when I was growing up. I just remember that she washed my mouth out with soap a couple times and my dad threatened to beat me with a belt a couple times for like no reason, but it didn't happen. I don't know why they were threatening me. I don't know. >> But otherwise, a normal childhood. >> Uh, I mean, no, it wasn't really all that normal. I don't know why you want to talk about my best friend blew his brains out in sixth grade. So, >> where'd you go? What what school did you guys go to? >> He switched schools. He went somewhere else in the sixth grade. I don't remember the name of it. >> Where did you go to school? Where you met? >> I I don't want to talk about it. >> Where'd you go to high school? >> Doesn't matter. >> How about your dad? Sorry. >> Did you get along with your dad growing up? >> No, he was an idiot. He was a terror. >> How so? >> He's a [ __ ] [ __ ] Uh, the only thing I had to do was deal with him taking me to soccer stuff and wrestling stuff. That's the only thing he did. Let's see. I don't know why you want to know. I don't know why it matters. These are pieces to the puzzle that we're trying to put together. >> I mean, it just doesn't matter. >> So, that you you like vodka. I'm a fan. Any other drugs or any other marijuana? I smoked some weed yesterday. >> Well, it's legal now. >> Yeah. >> Cocaine, crack, anything like that. Hard stuff. >> Just weed. >> Okay. Are you on any prescribed medications for uh for anything? >> No. >> No. Are you supposed to be >> What supposed to be? What? What was I supposed to >> Have you been prescribed medications that you don't take? >> I don't know what you're talking about. >> Okay. We're just asking. We're trying We're trying to get a full picture because, you know, we know what happened. We're trying to figure out how we got there. >> Okay. Well, >> and you're you're giving us some quick answers and you're, you know, you're being cooperative, but it's for us there's we think there could be more to it and we're just trying to figure out what that more part is. >> Oh my god. >> It's our job to ask questions. Okay. >> He did it. They just did it to himself. They weren't real. He was coming up the steps one day and I was looking at his face and he had all these deep lines on his face and just the way his whole face looked. Like I was just seeing these deep lines and then he comes in the house. He literally comes in the house, grabs something out of like the refrigerator or something, sits on the chair, sits on the couch, and I look at him, and he looks his face is completely different. It's like looking at two different people. And I was like, I told him, I said, I said, "You look totally different than you just did on the porch." I was like, "You have these deep lines on your face." And he just started cracking up laughing. He was like just started cracking up laughing. Just left for a while. >> Oh no. I don't want What do you want me to tell you? >> We We just want to >> You just You're going to say it again. I told you why. I have been hospitalized like five times >> and that was it. That was the last straw. I was not going back to the hospital and she told me that I could not stay there the the night. She told me to go find a park bench and that was it. >> Okay. >> So, when she said that, did you we obviously you got mad. Did you start screaming and yelling? >> No, I just told her to shut up. She said, "You're not staying here tonight." And I said, "Shut up. Just shut up." >> And did you say it that way or did you >> Yeah, I just I just said I I just said it like that. I just said I was like she was like you're not staying here tonight. And I was like just shut up. And she was like I'm serious. You're not staying here tonight. I said I said I said it again. I said just shut up. And she said you need to go find a park bench tonight. You're not staying here. I told her to shut up again. And then I think that's when my dad suggested to call the police and my mom said they're not going to do anything. Just call the crisis unit. And that was it. I just grabbed a knife and that's it. >> Do you remember after you grabbed the knife, did you do you re recall exactly what happened? >> Yeah, I stabbed him right I either stabbed him in the head or I stabbed him in his abdomen and that was it. I don't want to talk about anymore. >> And then mom got up off the couch, went outside. Did you stab her on the front porch? >> I don't want to talk about anymore. I don't want to talk about it. We're already talking about it. Okay. >> All right, Ken. We're just trying to put it all together so we can understand. >> All right. It's hard. It's hard looking from the outside in. I understand. You know, you've been dealing with with this for a long time. >> So, it it's built up for you. Um, we're we've been dealing with, you know, this for a few hours, meaning, you know, we don't know you from anybody else. You're the only one here that we can get these answers from right now. That's why we're trying to do this. Okay. Do you understand me? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, but is is there anything else that you think you can say to us to help us understand? >> No, that's it. I don't want to talk about anymore. >> Okay. The interview and booking footage show Kenneth admitting the attack, describing the crisis unit call as the immediate trigger and later questioning whether an officer was real. The recording documents his statements, but it cannot by itself answer every question about his condition or intent. Thomas survived his injuries. Kenneth later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder, kidnapping, and felonious assault, and was sentenced to at least 45 years in prison.
