Westbound Huntington. >> April 24th, 2024 started as a routine search warrant for federal agents in Portland, Oregon, but it quickly turned into a multi- agency nightmare. Travis Griggler, a registered sex offender under investigation for child pornography, did the unthinkable. He carjacked a federal agent's vehicle and fled north. Today, we break down the intense pursuit and the series of failures that allowed a dangerous predator to escape in a police interceptor. The situation began during an interview. Griggla was in the passenger seat of a federal agent's vehicle. In a split-second lapse, when the agent stepped out, Griggla climbed over and hit the gas. He wasn't just driving away in a car. He was driving a government vehicle equipped with a firearm, a computer, and emergency lights. This blunder sparked a chase that spanned two states and involved dozens of officers. >> One day set up at 36. Heat. Heat. wondering if there's any suspicion for >> Well, their observations are the same as I 112 and he's driving all over the shoulder. Flame three. >> Here he comes. >> As Griggla sped north on I5, Cowitz County deputies and state troopers worked frantically to stop him. The suspect was driving with total disregard for life, passing cars on the shoulder and reaching speeds of triple digits. Officers deployed multiple sets of spike strips. Watch as they risk their lives standing on the highway to end this threat. Finally, at mile 30, they get a clip on the tire, but Griggla isn't stopping. >> 30 might have got a clip on that. I don't know if they got him or not. Negative one is lane one back over now. There are some DOT workers on the shoulder. 48 northbound 37 northbound about a MILE with the front driver side tire shredding to pieces. The interceptor finally slowed down. Griggler was forced off the road and a high-risk takedown began. Officers, knowing there was a firearm inside the car, approached with extreme caution. "I need hands," they shouted. After a brief standoff, the man who thought he could outrun the feds was back in handcuffs. Miraculously, no innocent bystanders were hurt during the chaos. center over one tire. Clear. Clear. Going to try and shut the door off. Sorry, man. I thought it was ours. >> Well, I was holding way back so that way if they got him on I5, I could stop traffic and then of course everybody goes there and I'm like, we don't want cars coming through here. [laughter] >> No, >> it's always funny like there's a job. There's always a job other than being >> Yeah. >> As much as I want to BE THAT PERSON. GOT THE CONTROLLER, but stop. >> Hey, man. Do you want to be checked out by us, >> please? >> Okay. >> Any neck pain, back pain? >> I mean, I have five herniated discs, so always back pain. >> No. >> Gotcha. >> Just shoulder pain. >> Well, seems understandable. >> Yeah. >> How fast was the vehicle going when you actually rolled? >> Not very. The tire had already been blown, so maybe 40, 50, >> if that. >> Travis, what do you want to do? Um, >> regardless if you come with us to the hospital, you're still going to go to jail, right? Like, you're not getting out of that. So, we can take you or they can take you. What do you want to do? >> Let's go hospital. >> What do you need from me? >> Nothing. I'm going to go book him. I just need to get uh hospital. >> He wants to go with us. like it's not going to change, you know, where he goes today. >> Does he does he need to be in an ambulance based on what you guys are observing? No, then we can take him to the hospital. >> He's done this already. We're not doing this again. >> Yeah, >> Travis, you're going to go to the hospital, but you're going in a cop car. You're not going in an ambulance. All right. Okay. >> And then you're going to go get booked in jail. this way. >> Okay, >> we can do it. >> Huh? >> Do you want me to clear? >> Uh, yeah. I'll stick around. >> All right, Travis, hop out. I'm going to search you real quick and then you're going to then [laughter] we're going to get right back in there. We're going to go to the hospital. Okay. Put your hands up for me if you can. How you doing? >> Nothing in your shoes. All right. Go ahead and hop back in there. Okay. >> You twist that or something. I'm sorry. Go ahead and just take this. You got any ID or anything on you? >> In my wallet. Whatever my wallet is. >> Wallet's in there. >> Wallet might be in the car. >> All right. There you go. Hop in there. They don't make these for tall guys. I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to do that. >> What's that? >> You don't have to buckle. I'm not going nowhere. I promise. >> Oh, that's that >> I I >> I don't I don't really have a choice. I got to buckle you up, man. >> Okay. I gave I gave my best shot. I'm not going nowhere else. >> Hey, just so you know, everything back here is audio video recorded. Okay, >> that's fine. So, are you guys okay with going to Long View the hospital or do you want to go further south? >> I don't care. It's honestly it's he broke a bunch of Washington laws. He's on the on the federal side. Um, so we we got him for a lot of stuff. We'll let him work through the system. Uh, I think the the immediate concern is just getting into a hospital. That's what I'm at. >> Yeah. Yeah. Anywhere. No. No. Yeah. Whatever's convenient. I'm transporting. So, I don't know. Somebody following me or what's it? Who do you want to go with? >> I'll I'll stick with uh these guys uh and stay on and be there. And then the tow truck company. >> It's going to be Carl's towing from along with you. They should be here pretty quick. So, so we have somebody going with you. >> Uh one of these HSI guys are going to go with me. I'm transporting them. Chief, do you want me to sit with him until they're clear? Till he's cleared from the hospital or when we get there, they take custody of it. Just go. >> Stay with him. We're going to book them. >> Okay. We're going to book him. >> Yeah, we're going to stay with him. >> Tried to escape today. So, >> yeah. I got a Marshall and a HSI going that they they were saying that they're going to take custody of him at the hospital. So, um I don't know. I don't know. I just wanted to >> Well, I'll get that sorted out, but yeah, just go there in the meantime. >> Yeah, just just let just let me know. I'll stay I'll stay there until I hear otherwise from you or the federal charges are not >> state charges. >> You've got plenty of state charges in Washington. >> So I'm just trying to get the right operation here. So uh we hit his roommate 20 days ago. >> He was so mad about that siren. He didn't realize it was from this carbody. >> I'm trying to tell him I'm like it's coming from that. >> I feel bad about his car. kind of a move. >> The capture was just the beginning. Inside the crashed vehicle and among Griggler's belongings, agents found phones filled with hundreds of child pornography images. Travis Griggler was already a convicted offender, and this escape attempt added felony elilluding carjacking and theft of government property to his wrap sheet. In the end, his attempt to flee only sealed his fate. In 2025, Grigga was sentenced to nearly 22 years in federal prison. He'll be under supervision for the rest of his life. This case highlights both the bravery of the officers in the field and the critical mistakes that can happen during an investigation. What do you think about the initial slip up?
