How many times does an officer have to shout, "Drop the gun. >> Put the gun down. Put theing gun down." >> before a suspect complies. In the world of law enforcement, there is no magic number, only a ticking clock where hesitation turns into lethal risk. Today on Body Cam Pulse, we break down a terrifying Sunday afternoon standoff. A man armed with a loaded firearm refuses every single command. actively draws his weapon and tests the absolute limits of police restraint. This is a masterclass in deescalation under extreme pressure. It started with a 911 call reporting an armed man. When officers located the 48-year-old suspect, Lotus, he was wiping mace off his face and already had his hand resting on a holstered firearm. Officers immediately drew their weapons, ordering him to raise his hands. Instead of complying, Lotus did the unthinkable. He unholstered his gun and began pacing back and forth, completely ignoring the guns pointed at him. Officers even attempted to use a taser, but it failed to connect properly, allowing the suspect to jump back into his vehicle and drive away. >> Push your hands up. I got a call of a man with a gun, so that's why I'm here. Okay, put your hands up. I need to make sure firearms on you. >> Push your hands up. Push your hands up. Come here. Come here. Come here. There's no answer the first couple times. 56. Are you still looking, >> dude? Metro looking for. >> All right, at this point we're not going to pursue him. All right. >> What happened? >> What do we got here? He starts walking around. He has a pistol in his uh in his waistband and a holster. So, we draw draw a gun on him and he starts walking around here. >> He takes out of the holster and walks around like this and we're having him at gunpoint and eventually gets back into his car and leaves. >> We have no complainant. The complainant called saying somebody was here with a gun. We tried to tase him, didn't work, and he just left. So, I mean, >> did the taser hit him? >> Yeah, one probe did. >> No [ __ ] What kind of car was he in? >> He was in a gray Kia. No front bumper. I mean, all all we really have at this point, I guess. I guess UW because he pulled his gun out, but we got our guns out at him, too. But that's about it. We have no complaining for the initial thing and obstructing, obviously. >> Still got eyes on him. We're approaching Rockway on 159. What do we want to do about this? >> I mean, there's no point in chasing him, right? Are your lights on? Fit. So you try to stop him. Not too long. report by county. Because the initial caller hadn't stuck around to file a formal complaint, officers didn't immediately initiate a high-speed pursuit. Instead, they followed him until they could execute a safe tactical stop. Now pinned down for the second time, Lotus still refused to drop the weapon. The primary officer on scene completely changes the game here. Using a calm, steady voice, he actively tries to build rapport, even offering him a cigarette just to deescalate the tension and prevent a shootout. >> Can you step out of the vehicle without the gun? >> I I'm allowed to carry a gun. I don't know if you can >> grab a lot. >> Hold on. Talk to me. Don't worry about them. Okay. >> Now, I'm in the first place. >> I showed up in the first place because somebody said you had a gun. And we were they were they were right. >> What are the chances you had a gun? wiping mace off of my face >> and we're trying to figure out why that's it. What What happened? I'm trying to figure out why you left. >> We didn't tear you until you had that gun out, sir. That's all on camera, too. All right. Good boy. Good boy. Come on. Come on. Lotus finally stepped out of the car, but quickly began spouting sovereign citizen rhetoric, claiming he didn't like being controlled or forced to accept the mark of the beast. When he aggressively stepped toward the sergeant and refused to put his hands behind his back, the talk was officially over. A second taser was deployed and this time it worked perfectly, dropping him to the ground instantly so officers could finally secure the scene. Lotus was hit with heavy charges, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault, and seven counts of resisting a peace officer. Fortunately, his dog was safely rescued from the vehicle and taken to animal control without injury. According to FBI statistics, a massive percentage of officers killed in the line of duty are shot from extremely close range, making this level of patience by the officers nothing short of incredible. What do you think? Did police wait too long to deploy the taser? Drop your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for watching Body Cam Pulse.
