A steering wheel and a bottle. A combination that never ends well. Today on Body Cam Pulse, we look at a tragedy that didn't just break the law, but broke a lifelong bond. 26-year-old Dylan Vansich thought he was just being stupid for a night. He didn't realize that in one split second he would lose his vehicle, his freedom, and his best friend. This is the heavy price of one wrong decision. Before we continue, I want to say thank you to the 33 people who have joined this channel so far. We are small, but we are dedicated to sharing these stories to prevent future tragedies. May 17th, 2024, Trumbull County, Ohio. Witnesses heard an engine revving, then a deafening crash. Dylan's Pontiac G8 had slammed into a utility pole with so much force that the passenger side was completely crushed. Dylan survived, but his best friend, 41-year-old Nicholas Thompson, was trapped inside. First responders tried everything, but the damage was already done. Nicholas was gone. How you doing? witnesses now on it brought up on here. Those are actually witnesses. They were the first to come out. I don't know to answer just cuz I've never been in something like this. And I don't think it could have been any worse. I was intoxicated. That's That's about all I'm willing to answer. >> Okay. Well, >> couldn't be the worst question. >> Unfortunately, I I'm going to be straight up with you. I'm not going to I'm not going to sugar coat. I'm not going to >> I'm not going to um >> hide anything. But yet, your passenger, unfortunately, he didn't make it. >> Okay. Was that your friend or >> my best friend? >> Okay. >> Do you remember what happened? Do you know how you lost control? >> Yeah, being stupid. I'll give you that. >> That's all I'm willing to say is I was being stupid. >> Yeah, I know alcohol's involved. That's why we're going to pressure you you from the stop. >> Should you give me the cup of ice just behind you? >> Sure. >> Thank you very much. All right. >> Do you know any information on your your uh passenger, his phone number or anything? >> I'm just really good friends with his sister. >> Okay. >> I work with them. >> And he he works there as well. Okay. >> So, you don't have any questions whatsoever for me? All right. I'll probably be back here shortly. >> I appreciate it. Thank you. No. In the hospital, the reality starts to set in. Dylan admits to the officer that he was intoxicated, but he doesn't know the full extent of the tragedy yet. When the officer finally tells him that his best friend didn't make it, the silence is deafening. Being stupid. That was Dylan's only explanation. His blood alcohol level was.21, more than double the legal limit. A mistake that can never be taken back. Months later, Dylan stood before a judge. He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide. Tears streamed down his face as he begged for forgiveness from Nicholas's family. The judge sentenced him to 3 to 4.5 years in prison and a lifetime driving suspension. But the real prison isn't the one with bars. It's the memory of that night that will haunt him forever. Steel can bend and airbags can deploy, but no safety feature can save you from a lack of judgment. Please, if you've been drinking, call a ride. Don't let your best friend's face be the last thing you remember from a night of being stupid. What is your take on this sentence? Was it enough? Let's talk in the comments. I read them all.
