I have a feeling it's going to be a little bit more >> go ahead and place your hands behind your back for me. >> Why? Guys are going in handcuffs. >> Why? >> During the struggle to place her in handcuffs, Martinez and the officers went to the ground. Moments later, one officer noticed her leg appeared broken. You can hear on the footage her leg just broke. Paramedics were called and transported Martinez to the hospital >> because stop, >> ma'am. Stop. We're going to take you to the ground next. Do you want to do that? >> Do you want to go to the ground? >> Relax your arms. Relax your arms right now. >> RELAX. OKAY. OKAY. OH MY GOD. >> GO ON YOUR STOMACH. >> GET ON YOUR STOMACH. I'm not good. >> Her leg just broke. >> Her leg just broke. >> Get that, please. >> Hey, get that dog back now. >> Initially, doctors treated the fracture and reports say she was discharged without signs of infection. However, later that month on September 26th, Martinez was readmitted due to infection and doctors performed a leg amputation above the knee. The district attorney later ruled the officer's actions were justified and the force used was reasonable. However, Martinez filed a civil rights lawsuit, claiming the officers violated her Fourth Amendment rights by using excessive force. Even if the fracture occurred during the arrest, that alone doesn't prove the officers acted unlawfully. Courts apply the objective reasonleness test, considering what the officers knew in that moment, not with hindsight. The lawsuit's strength will depend on proving a causal connection between the arrest, the injury, and the eventual amputation, potentially involving expert medical testimony. Meanwhile, the defense will argue that the injury was an unintended consequence during lawful restraint and that later medical complications were outside police
