As the first Shawwood police officer arrived at the scene in his patrol car, Griffin immediately opened fire through the windshield of the squad car. The officer was struck in the chest, but his ballistic vest saved his life. 9:24. I was hitting the chest, upper right shoulder, upper right shoulder. The suspect somewhere on the 1700 block of wood. Tragically, 34year-old Victoria Truss, a security guard and mother of one, was found lying on the lawn outside the residence. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her hands, chest, and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene. The discovery of the murder victim prompted authorities to issue a neighborhoodwide shelter in place order. Officers from 27 different law enforcement agencies along with FBI agents flooded the area in an effort to locate the suspect. Investigators quickly learned about Victoria's long history of domestic violence involving her ex-boyfriend Michael Griffin, whom she had recently separated from. The landlord identified Griffin's vehicle as a black Mercedes-Benz, which was eventually detected by flock license plate cameras. [music] Griffin then fled the area in a black MercedesBenz high-speed pursuit through Milwaukee morning hours. After several hours of searching, license plate readers located Griffin's vehicle in Glendale. A dangerous chase followed, reaching speeds of nearly 100 mph, 160 kmh through suburban areas and the city of Milwaukee. Even while driving, Griffin continued firing at pursuing officers. At one point, one officer was forced to return fire through his own windshield while still behind the wheel. Final gun battle and death police eventually used a pit maneuver to spin Griffin's Mercedes in Milwaukee's Brewers Hill neighborhood. He had been in a long-term relationship with Victoria Truss, and the two had moved back in together about a month before the tragedy. According to Victoria's family and friends, Griffin had a history of violence. Victoria had previously contacted police regarding domestic abuse. Toxicology reports later revealed that Griffin had methamphetamine in his system during the events, the double shooting in Shawwood around 3:00 a.m. In the early morning hours, Michael Griffin went to Victoria Truss's apartment building in Shawwood. He first encountered the building's owner and opened fire, striking him in the torso and hand. Despite his injuries, the owner survived. Griffin then went upstairs to Victoria's apartment and shot her. Although seriously wounded, Victoria managed to escape outside the building. When officers ultimately stopped the vehicle, Michael Griffin was found dead inside. According to Fox 6 Milwaukee, a Glendale police officer, a Milwaukee police sergeant, and an FBI special agent had fired their weapons during the exchange. Investigators recovered 35 spent shell casings from the officer's firearms, while Griffin had sustained 11 gunshot wounds. Authorities later discovered nine spent shell casings inside Griffin's vehicle, confirming that he had fired from within the car. Toxicology reports revealed that methamphetamine was present in his system. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office later ruled that the officers were justified in their use of deadly force and cleared them of any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, the Shawwood officer, who had been shot, survived thanks to his ballistic vest and was released from the hospital shortly afterward. Victoria's landlord also recovered from his injuries. Michael Griffin's criminal history court records showed that Michael Griffin had a lengthy history of violence and domestic abuse. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to battery and possession of a dangerous weapon while under the age of 18. He received a suspended six-month jail sentence and was placed on probation for one year. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Griffin was arrested by Milwaukee police in 2013 on allegations of domestic abuse, but prosecutors declined to file charges. He was also arrested in 2020 and again in 2021 in separate cases involving felony firstderee recklessly endangering safety. However, neither case resulted in prosecution. Just two months before her murder, Victoria Truss had called police to report that her boyfriend possessed a gun and refused to leave her home. According to Victoria's cousin, she had finally managed to force Michael out of the house just one day before he returned and killed her. >> She was a strong young lady, hard worker, like she always had a job, always had good jobs, and she always made sure her and her son never had to struggle. Soon I found out that it was her, my heart just dropped. I've been in the world 53 years. I've been here long enough. I just wish I could try places with my daughter just so she could be here with her son. And I'm going to miss that my baby. [laughter] I'm never going to hear her voice again.
