At the same time, members of the hostage negotiation team attempted to establish contact with the suspect by phone in hopes of bringing the standoff to a peaceful end. Despite repeated efforts, the suspect refused to respond. With no signs of cooperation and concerns growing over the threat he posed, SWAT operators ultimately made the decision to force entry into the apartment. Once inside, they discovered the suspect dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Meanwhile, officers focused on saving the life of the woman who had been shot earlier in the incident. After managing to escape into the courtyard of the apartment complex, the wounded victim collapsed directly into the arms of responding officers. They immediately dragged her to safety and began providing emergency medical aid while remaining under the threat of further gunfire. Personnel from the Seattle Fire Department soon arrived and stabilized the victim who had suffered a serious gunshot wound to the lower back and abdomen. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition. Doctors later confirmed that she survived her injuries. As required by department policy, the Seattle Police Department identified the officer who fired his weapon during the confrontation as Officer Leonardo Bosi Rodriguez. In accordance with standard procedures for officer involved shootings, he was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The King County Medical Examiner's Office later determined that the suspect had not died from police gunfire. Instead, investigators concluded that he had taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, officially ruling the death a suicide. Although the suspect's cause of death has been determined, the force investigation team continues to review the circumstances surrounding the officer's use of force to ensure that all actions taken during the incident were lawful and consistent with department policy.
