December 19th, 2025, Canton, Ohio police responded to Walmart Shopping Center on Atlantic Boulevard at about 2:00 in the afternoon for a suspected shoplifting call related to stolen merchandise. Officers arrived and took a suspect, 21-year-old Shane Newman, and a companion, 23-year-old Katrina Jeffrey, into the store's loss prevention office to conduct further questioning. Come here, guys. That's the way it is. Have a seat. You got anything on you I need to know about? Why your hand in your pockets? >> It's not falling. >> Okay, you done real quick. I do have this uh >> piece of [ __ ] I stole in here >> bag and [ __ ] >> What's in there? >> They only car? >> Yeah. >> Drive and see for me. Anything else in there I should know about my man? >> Body cam footage shows a tense but controlled environment as the officer and asset protection associates began questioning Newman. Karina, >> right? >> What's your name? >> What's up? >> What's your name? >> Xavier. >> Xavier what? >> Because my man, if you don't cooperate, I'll put you in handcuffs. >> Xavier was I I'll give you I'll give you my resource. I figured that was not right. Thank you for [music] that. I was going to get you know something crazy happened. >> You did it too. So on her we watched you walk over and put a item in the bag off the shelf. >> 5550. [music] HEY, HEY. >> NO, NO, NO, NO. Use your hand now. Newman produced a handgun and attempted to fire it at the officer inside the room. The weapon failed to fire on the first attempt, preventing what could have been a fatal outcome. As Newman attempted to re-engage the firearm, the Walmart asset protection associate intervened and immediately tackled him, pinning the weapon and preventing further attempt. No officers or associates were reported injured during the struggle and no shots were fired by the police. Court records filed after the incident show Newman was charged with attempted murder, felonous assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession, and having a weapon under a disability, likely linked to a previous felony conviction that barred him from possessing firearms.
