On August 29th, 2025, around 7:45 p.m., a following police officers were dispatched to a resident in the 600 block of West Madison Street after reports of a disturbance involving a man armed with a knife. When officers arrived on scene, they immediately encountered a chaotic situation. Two individuals were seen fleeing the home, both covered in blood, reporting that they had just been attacked. Outside the residence, officers located the suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Matthew Blank, who was still armed with a knife. Officers gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon. He refused. As the suspect began advancing, officers attempt to deescalate while maintaining distance, but the situation continued to escalate within seconds. One officer ultimately discharges his firearm, striking the suspect. Officers immediately moved in and began rendering emergency aid while waiting for medical personnel to arrive despite life-saving efforts at the scene. The suspect was pronounced dead. Get him in custody. All right, go ahead and send him straight to the scene. We got a female. Looks like she's got some sort of stab wound to the arm. Male's down. Multiple gunshots. Two individuals who had fled the home were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening stab wounds. Illinois State Police later took over an investigation, reviewing both bodywn camera and dash camera footage from responding officers. After review, the case was presented to St. Clair County State Attorney's Office, which ultimately declined to file charges against the officer involved. on the line on scene everybody get further out.
