Just across the Rio Grand lies Matamoros, Mexico. The two cities are bound together by three main bridges, the Gateway, the B and M, and the Veterans, each funneling thousands of people and vehicles every day. But outside those official lanes, this area is part of the Rio Grand Valley sector, one of the busiest for illegal crossings in the entire country. Here, a few hundred yards of river separate two nations, rafts slip across at night, smugglers guide groups into neighborhoods, and stash houses hide in plain sight. Today, a Brownsville native is featured where a suspect was pulled over by Texas DPS and refused to stop. He then shot at the officer and crashed his vehicle, taking off on foot. Fort Brown Border Patrol agents were contacted to assist in apprehension of the suspect. This is captured footage of that incident. This is still an ongoing investigation. Drop the gun. The suspect was spotted in the backyard of a property and immediately tried to retreat into a home. In most situations with law enforcement, the unknown of the inside is too risky and the suspect still had a gun in his hands. Action was taken to avoid an escalation. >> Drop the gun. Call to me. For the next 5 to 8 minutes, first responders continue to administer aid, which ultimately led to the suspect being able to survive and get much needed advanced medical care at Valley Baptist Hospital. Valley Central News publicly identified the suspect, Alberto Pinto Jr., as the 25-year-old suspect who is accused of the crimes in this video. Brownsville PD later posted his mugsh shot, announcing two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant of the first degree, evading arrest with a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
