denim day started in the early 1990s there was an 18 year old driver's ed student who was sexually assaulted by her instructor and his conviction was overturned it was overturned because they decided that because she was wearing jeans and her jeans were so tight that she had to help remove her own jeans for the sexual assualt to occur thereby giving consent for the sex act to take place when women heard about this there was a protest a women wore jeans and they protested the movement and so that's how it came to tape to be what we're doing as arts and crafts this year with : 19 it's a little bit tricky so what we did with the sensitive Crimes Division is we made grab bags to go we have canvassing that they can paint or draw we've also cut up many pairs of jeans so that they can do some type of artwork to bring awareness for for sexual assault and sexual violence all of the necessary supplies are in these kits so our community partner can pick the kids up take it home and decorate it at their leisure my favorite part about denim day is the value of collaboration with community partners there is a sense of empowerment when we do these events if there's the educational component so it's just about bringing awareness and bringing awareness to the community that I really enjoy [Music]
