so last night after we left the Statue of Liberty we went to get some dinner we stopped to eat dinner at a restaurant here in this little area with some shops and restaurants it's pretty neat they have valet parking over here you could even go over there and sit by a fire while we were at dinner we decided to stay and view another place today today is day two of our trip to Birmingham Alabama [Music] [Music] [Music] now we're gonna check out the Sloss furnace factory Sloss furnace factory was a steel factory and it was open from 1882 to 1970 the Vulcan was placed there because of the iron and steel industry that was built here in Birmingham well this is one of those factories and they've taken this back three that's really old and turned it into a museum here's a giant wheel I think I remember this thing from transformers didn't it turn into the big thing that's up to all the stuff up Hitchcock would be proud did this guy from Jurassic Park these buckets here that were filled with : Rock would travel up this slope would travel up to the top where it would enter the machine to crush him the way they've taken this old factory and turned it from a scrap place to just sit and decay off the side of the interstate into a monument to the steel and coal industry is simply amazing enter in the factory we were here to your right are all pipes that would feed in liquids that they needed these areas here they're lined up as a matter of fact there's 16 of them on this side 20 altogether in the factory or the fire pits these are the boilers they use to run this entire factory it took 20 of these large boilers because she just stacks the way up high to 20 of them to run this factory they brought the coal in right where I'm walking if you look on either side of the path here and here is strange rise they would roll the carts of coal coal in to throw in the boilers [Music] this wall of decay here you can see it's just been molded over time by steam and fire rock water going deep down into the factory this is an old control room each year at Halloween they do the Schloss fright factory a haunted house they have nestled down in all of this this is a generator room I'm here on a platform in the first layer underneath you see the control panel here that runs the lifts put it in those buckets carry it to the top where it dumps it on the other side you can also hear the water running underneath this here's another control panel this place is awesome [Music] this card is on tracks they would use rod open down through this tunnel at the bottom of the live [Music] this was absolutely the coolest tunnel I've ever been through in my life and I don't know if you can see it here but these are c-clamps there's one there that's what's holding those stairs together and here behind me used to be another way to get down but obviously they didn't want anybody get hurt so they have filled it full of rocks there's a train coming behind me so it's kind of hard to hear right now here it comes there it is set off on the back side of the building is an old bucket crane they would use to scoop up the rock in the cold it's a field where the buckets that scoop up all that go to die [Music] inside of this bucket crane right now look at this everything was left exactly the way it was when it was working it's just been sitting here so long now I doubt it works anymore but the engineer the engineer is personally driving it was stand right here and he had his control control down here to use levers here he would use all of these controls to control the crane scooping up the coal and moving it to another location [Music] here's a big tank I have no clue what it does have a stage feel here so for the Halloween show in those kind of events they can have a band or something to that nature going on us out of there all the ladle car this is their water tower let's add all the water for the factory are called hot blast stoves you can see they have all these mechanical doors and such everywhere and all these hot blast those they heated all the air before it went to the furnace [Music] as soon as you walk through this doorway into this turbine room cold air hits you in the face it's pretty chilly in here you're in the flywheel room to monitor that oil and air pressures and such this is the biggest branch I've ever seen in my life I've never seen a ridge this big before way leads up to these decks that control all of these gigantic fly wheels and in its heyday when this factory was working all these wheels would have been spinning all at one time somebody would have been here controlling them well these wheels turned you can see that the wheels are old and falling off their tracks now but people we get into this factory the darker it gets obviously but the colder it gets this structure is among one of the top haunted places in the state of Alabama as well these old generators have probably been sitting there since the Titanic song old old generator there's a neat little archway they have he ripped it in here with a bunch of saw blades pitchforks I don't know if that was here when the factory was in its heyday or if that was constructed afterwards maybe for the haunted attraction here every Halloween I'm sure but I think this is their Jail sale these are some neat looking boilers here it would burn to create the steam to run the plant but look at the intricate design of the bricks around the outside of it it's pretty neat Schloss factory is a pretty neat location if you ever get around Birmingham I definitely suggest you come and check it out [Music] we just made it back home to Montgomery it's been a long day I really enjoyed the Sloss furnace factory today but I do apologize for this episode of being a little bit longer but there was a lot to see so I'm gonna go ahead and end it now thank you all for watching I will see you tomorrow [Music]
