a three o'clock this afternoon to brave Milwaukee police officers were gunned down as they were questioning a suspect this is a totally unprovoked attack and our two officers never had a chance to even draw their weapons I've just come from the hospital and all indications are that both officers are going to recover but both are recovering from serious wounds the name of these brave officers are Brian Norberg brian is 21 years old and has been serving this community on the streets for the past six months he's in satisfactory condition the officer that was with him as Graham kunis grandma's 26 and has been with us for 15 months these two brave officers around here actively protecting the community when this incident occurred the suspects name is Julius see Burton he's 18 years old he has an arrest record with his police department including burglary and possession of a fake pistol will make a very important point first we thank God but these officers are going to be alright our prayers are with them and with their families and the families of all police officers who every day send their loved ones off to work not knowing if they're going to come home the second point I want to make is this neighborhood came through today at every key moment of this investigation someone from the community stepped forward a taxicab driver came to the assistance of the officers as they were bleeding in the street a UPS driver tried to follow the footsteps of the suspect as he fled by the scene finally an individual homeowner identified for us where he thought the suspect might be hiding and on top of that our officers despite all the stress and emotion you might be in attendance in such a situation extracted that suspect without incident and without injury now I want to make a very important point to everyone here covering this story do not stigmatize this neighborhood this is a low crime neighborhood bad things happen to good people bad things happen in good neighborhoods this is a safe neighborhood with cooperative citizens hard-working businesses and proud Milwaukee ins and I urge all of you to cover it so we now like to turn the microphone over to Mayor Barrett Thank You chief at first I want to say that the prayers and thoughts are with the two officers and their families right now from all Milwaukee ins these two men really really really deserve our support they have been hurt badly they are going to survive but they were doing the job that most Milwaukee ins would not want to do and that is guarding our safety they were out here in the middle of the day guarding our safety and were accosted by an individual who gave them as the chief said absolutely no chance they had no chance whatsoever fortunately they are going to survive but again there their injuries are serious i also have to commend all the other police officers and the firefighters who were here it was because of their work that we were able to apprehend the suspect so quickly they of course as the chief just pointed out could not have done this if it was not for the incredible assistance of citizens of the city Milwaukee and I want to thank all the citizens who step forward very very quickly at every step of this investigation to help the police officers that's what we need in this community we need the people in this community to work closely with our Police Department and they did that today in a tremendous tremendous way so I want to thank them as well finally I think we all have to recognize it by having these crazy guns on the street it's nothing but trouble it is nothing but trouble here we've got a 18 year old who's got this gun and he's shooting him right at police officers this has gotta stop this has got to stop in this neighborhood in every neighborhood as the chief said this is a great neighborhood this is an entertainment district which is a safe neighborhood captain gaglione is going to talk about the statistics for this neighborhood to let the citizens of this neighborhood know this is a place where you can feel safe notwithstanding what we saw happen this afternoon captain thank you very thank you chief this is a very safe neighborhood as the chiefest it's a great entertainment district in the crime for entertainment district of the walkers point area is down eighteen percent so far this year compared to the same period last year that in itself shows that where it's headed in the right direction it was great business owner sira great citizens that live here who are all all interact with us on a regular basis and work with us a reduced crime in this neighborhood we have to remember that that's what this says it's a great neighborhood an isolated incident that shouldn't cast a shadow or cloud over this great neighbor and all the hard work that goes into this neighborhood by to business owners and the citizens that live in this area we can answer a few questions but obviously as you all understand we're still doing case preparation and you're still concerned for the officers it was an investigatory stop we urge our officers to be proactive and to confront individuals who give indications of suspicious behavior and the way understanding is this was a field observation based on what they saw news conference in progress can you once again repeat the names the the years of service of the officers who have been treated in addition can you give us your reaction when you found out the officers names are Brian Norberg Brian's 21 years old and has been on the streets protecting us for six months he is wounded and he's in satisfactory condition his partner was Graham kunis grams 26 and has been with us for 15 months and he's in critical condition but both are expected to survive their wounds I had a chance to speak to both families and i gave them obviously our support and our prayers i spoke with them you know parent the parent as a parent of a police officer I know how they feel and I'm proud of them for sharing their son with us thank you
