today i am in a metro atlanta town called monroe georgia i have briefly been through here before uh this is where they filmed american pie the reunion i didn't spend a whole lot of time here in town but there is one unique story that i have come back to monroe to tell today and it's a wild one you see back in 2016 two men were both arrested and charged for the murder of a decades-old cold case that happened back in 1988 the then unsolved case was labeled the most gruesome murder in this area's history it took him 28 years to find out what happened before they finally made those arrests back in 2016. so today i'm going to be talking about the most gruesome murder in monroe georgia's history this is the murder of willie jo beasley on thursday august the 18th of 1988 willie joe beasley had missed a few days of work and his co-workers had become concerned about it so the boss at his place of employment he sent a few of willie's co-workers right here to this plot of land this is where lily's home was at the time it was like a duplex home that had been split up as you can see now it's gone this is a vacant property it's been completely torn down and there's nothing left but this is the exact spot where that that house once stood and this is the exact spot where those employees come looking for willie and they found willie joe beasley murder in his own home these men call the police department who come out to investigate and what they find is a crime scene like they have never seen before it was obvious that willie had been tortured and he was left in a unique position that would most certainly be embarrassing for him once someone had found him and on top of that anything that really owned that was valuable was gone it had been stolen like tvs vcrs those type things law enforcement quickly began investigating they talked to all of willie's neighbors and his friends and one name kept popping up throughout their investigation perry brown because perry brown's name kept appearing no matter who they talk to they set him down for an interview perry told law enforcement that he had briefly spoken with willie the day that he died but that was it he told him that he briefly talked to him but he had had no other interactions with them that day and because they didn't have any evidence after that interview perry was let go and he just kind of stayed at the top of their suspect list weeks later based on a tip from a neighbor who said that they saw perry brown walking near willie's house the night of the murder carrying the tv down the street perry brown was brought back in for a second interview and he caused investigators eyebrows to raise when he told them the exact same story that he had said weeks prior that he had only talked to willie briefly that day but this time he added something new this time he told him that the day of willie's murder he had gone to willie's house to help him install some new electronic equipment that he had purchased this was completely new information compared to anything that perry brown had said to them before plus they had this neighbor who told him they saw perry near willie's house carrying a tv a big piece of electronic equipment so law enforcement kind of pressed perry brown a little bit harder during this interview letting him know that he was their main suspect right now once they told perry that perry kind of got erratic and he told him he said if that's what you believe then lock me up and he like stuck his hands out like you know making the motion or signaling for them to handcuff him but they weren't quite ready to charge him just yet at this particular moment when the second interview occurred perry brown was in jail for a different crime and law enforcement knew he wasn't going anywhere for a while so they could wait and see if they got any more evidence first and then come back to him but perry brown he became increasingly concerned that they were gonna track him to willie's murder so he went back to his jail cell and he begins to talk to his cellmate about all of this and then of course after he talks to his cellmate his cellmate runs and tells authorities hoping to get a better deal for himself so once perry gets back to a sale his cellmate mark treadwell asked him you know what was that about and perry tells him that he had been involved in a murder and that they were trying to connect it to him brown told him that he had been there and that he did not have an alibi to give law enforcement so he felt like they were quickly going dependent on him perry brown then proceeds to tell his cellmate details of the murders that were never released to the public the day that willie joe beasley was found i said that it was clear to law enforcement he had been tortured and when they found him he was in his bedroom and he was standing up his wrists were tied up with a piece of wire that was also wrapped around his neck so he couldn't move his hands he couldn't move his neck and then that metal wire was tied to the door frame to the top of the door frame going into his bedroom meaning he couldn't move either hand he couldn't move his head and he was just like forced to stand there in the middle of a doorway which also meant there was no wall in front of him or behind him it was just like open space the day the actual murder happened was two days prior to them actually finding his body it was an off day for willie so he was just lounging around and he was in his own home he was sitting on the couch watching cartoons wearing nothing but his underwear and a t-shirt so whenever whatever happened to him happened and he was killed that's how that's what he was wearing and when law enforcement came in his home and found him his underwear had been pulled down to around his ankles and willie had had some kind of foreign object forcibly inserted into his rear end to the point where the coroner noted in his report that willie's anus had been so severely torn that it was worse than anything he had ever seen before and that he suspected it happened to willie while he was alive which would have caused him to be in an unimaginable amount of pain after that the killer shoved a wash rag in willy's mouth restricting his airflow and then they put a plastic bag over his head and they held it tight until willy died the killer then raided the home of willie jo beasley of all electronics money jewelry anything that had a value and police say that they believe the killers actually stayed in willie's home for several hours after they murdered him there was evidence left behind that they had smoked almost an entire carton of cigarettes that belonged to willie he had just bought it with his paycheck they smoked almost that whole carton before they left law enforcement never made the information about the forced sodomy public they also kept it a secret that they recovered a fingerprint off of the plastic bag that was used to smother willie so when perry brown's roommate comes to law enforcement and tells them that he had said this they knew at that moment this was the guy they were looking for no one else would have known that information but the killer so armed with this new information law enforcement obtains search warrants to collect dna samples and fingerprints from perry brown they collect him from his jail cell and they're escorting him to a private area to collect those samples perry fears that you know his dna is going to match up so he unsuccessfully tries to assault the officers and escape from them they quickly got him under control and stopped his escape attempt and then they continued with the collection of the evidence in a major blow to law enforcement the evidence came back as inconclusive essentially the test coming back inconclusive it did not mean that he was not the person responsible but it also didn't mean that he was the person responsible either and i don't know if it was a court order issue or something but in my head i'm like well then just do the test again but for whatever reason they didn't do that they just became deflated and they seemingly gave up after that after that point detectives really got no new information on this case on willie jo beasley's murder so his murder went cold and it stayed a cold case all the way up until 2016. back in 2016 detectives who were attempting to close a few of these walton county cold cases they stumbled across the file of an unsolved investigation from 1988 which was the murderer joe beasley these detectives opened the file and read through it horrified at the pictures and the descriptions of not only the crime scene but also the crime itself like what actually happened to willie with the way that he was tied up and the sodomy and all that the sheer brutality of the crime brought the detectives to tears and it encouraged them all of who were looking at this for like the first time it energized them to uncover a solution and finally get willie joe beasley some justice the investigators tracked down several of the people that law enforcement had talked to back in 1988 like a neighbor across the street and a few of willy's friends they also had a few suspects listed in those caves snows but yet again just as it was in 1988 no matter who they talked to and no matter what they read in those case notes they kept coming back to perry brown it was here that these new detectives got the break that they had been needing for nearly the last three decades they spoke to a neighbor who told them that they saw with their own eyes the night of willie beasley's murder they saw perry brown standing right outside of willie beasley's front door for hours and hours smoking cigarettes now law enforcement were able to corroborate this statement based on the fact like i told you earlier because of the crime scene they knew that the killers had hung out in willie's home for hours after his murder and they had smoked nearly an entire carton of cigarettes that belonged to willie well this was the uh this was another item that law enforcement never released to the public and the fact that this neighbor now mentioned this confirmed to the investigators that they're barking up the right tree detectives went on to ask this neighbor why didn't you say anything about this before why didn't you tell the 1988 investigators this information and this neighbor proceeds to tell them the story of how she had seen them outside of willie's home all day and at about 5 30 pm that evening she leaves to go get dinner and when she returns home they're still standing there but she hasn't seen willie so she decides that she's going to go over there and make sure everything is okay and as she approaches the front door she sees willie inside laying on the floor very quickly perry brown cuts her off jumps in front of her and tells her that if she tells anyone about what she just saw he's going to come kill her with his bare hands and he's also going to kill her family she tells detectives that the guilt that she has over this has completely eaten her up inside for all these years and that she's old enough now she's lived a full life and if perry brown comes after her for for talking about it at least willie can finally have some rest after all that this neighbor was not done yet dropping bombs and she tells the police that at about 10 30 p.m perry brown comes to her house which is like right across the street from willy's and he asked her if she knows where he can sell a tv at and he's holding willie's tv in his hands based on all of this new information law enforcement receives another search warrant from a judge to collect dna and fingerprints from perry brown at this time perry brown was almost 30 years older and he didn't have much fight in him at all in fact he showed up to this interview in a wheelchair but they were able to give these tests without any issues it only took a few days for those tests to come back and they 100 percent confirm that the fingerprint that was on that plastic bag that was used to suffocate willy beasley was an exact match to perry brown on july the 29th of 2016 28 years after willie joe beasley's death perry brown was finally arrested and charged with his murder and almost a year to the day after their arrest perry brown was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole the amount of relief that went through this community here when they finally made the arrest on this horrific case it took monroe georgia by storm people were so happy that these sick individuals were no longer getting to live free out here on the streets after what they did to willie joe beasley like i said in the
