so I'm working on a True Crime documentary right now but I learned that I had some of the information wrong in the documentary so I sent off a request to get the correct information from the investigators who were in charge of the case and they told me they are going to send me that instest that information but that it was going to be next week so I scrambled and in the last minute I'm switching it up I'm doing another story today and I'll put that one off until I get the right stuff so next week I'll uh be able to finish that one up the story that I'm telling today isn't about a murder or anything like that it was an accidental death or deaths raer when an Air Force t38 crash landed right here behind me [Music] I had to pause I wasn't expecting that plane there to fly in over my head during my intro so as I said I scrambled to come up with a new story to tell and I've actually uh had this one on the back burner for a little bit but today I'm in Montgomery Alabama uh actually I'm right here at our airport there are actually several facilities here the Air Force has a facility and well you can see the actual Jets out there and then Montgomery Regional Airport is also here and they all use the same runways most was notably this long one here which they call Runway 28 on February the 19th of 2021 pilot instructor first lieutenant Scott Ames Jr and student pilot Captain riny Yaki from the Japan air self-defense Force they took off from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi on a routine train and flight in a t38 supersonic train jet they were part of the 14th flying training wing of the United States Air Force now their flight plan was to leave Columbus and they were going to come here to Montgomery to an attempt a touch and go procedures about halfway and then they would complete the flight by Landing in Tallahassee Florida the two men left Columbus okay with no problems no issues at all it sounds like there's another plane coming in behind me I was saying they left Columbus they had no issues but as they approached Montgomery the pilot in training who was already having language barrier issues he began complaining about the air traffic here around the airport now at 4:40 p.m. that day the t38 was supposed to enter its final turn to line up with the runway the instructor Lieutenant Ames he told the uh trainer to slow down and turn 40° the uh training pilot dropped the landing gear and he began turning but he idled the engines instead of slowing down which meant that they made that turn going way too slow they slowed all the way down to 155 knots and it meant that they undershot the runway when he did that Lieutenant Ames stepped in and attempted to correct those mistakes he fired the afterburners and he pitched the jet up trying to get out of it but it was too late the engines had been set to idle for way too long almost 18 seconds they had been sitting on idle there was no thrust and it caused the aircraft to stall and basically fall out of the sky they continued trying to make it to the runway but they actually struck a set of power lines that were like 70 ft off the ground and you can actually still see them back there they have rebuilt them as well as this uh Tower here this is Runway lights for aircraft entering and exiting they Struck it and then they carved out a path through the trees here as they came to a stop just right here not but 100 yard off the end of the runway there you can see the down trees there and you can look in here and see the path of trees that was carved out you can see all the stumps and uh this is where the plane came to rest right here this happened in 2021 so it's been a couple of years and new trees have started growing but this is where it came to land this is where the aircraft stopped right here [Music] okay my Brack [Music] [Music] [Music] checks sweet okay to this b136 [Music] 165 [Music] 3 okay turning light increasing one two three good right times good yep see Runway there you go just a little bit neither one of the men first lieutenant Scott Ames Jr or captain Reni usaki neither one of them survived the crash the two men died instantly without even trying to eject which meant they probably thought that they were going to pull out of it until it was too late and they couldn't after everything was all said and done the United States Air Force the FAA and the NTSB all helped investigate what happened here which is why we know what happened unbelievably this crash that happened right here in Montgomery Alabama it took place just one one day after another t38 crashed in California even though the t-38s were uh considered to be safe aircraft to fly they didn't really have that many incidents prior to this happen there were two back-to-back days on both sides of the country even though it's been 2 years since this horrible event you can still see caution tape hanging in the tree they had this whole Road here shut down while uh they investigated and everything and currently present day they have erected a monument here right here in this wooded Tree Line This is where the plane crashed and they have erected this Monument here for first lieutenant Scott Rowdy Ames JR says Mafia 57 on it there's not one here for the uh the student pilot from Japan that pretty much it just fell right out of the sky oh there's three US military Choppers coming in over there headed to the base yeah you can even see the broken tree the broken trees there from the impact basically the tree basically the the t38 Talon it just kind of fell out of the sky because it sto and this is where it ended up right here that is going to do it for this uh just short story today as I said I threw something together because I was told it's going to be next week before I can finish up this uh documentary that I've been working on for a while it's a true crime story that not no well no one's really reported on it uh and I was able to get all of the crime scene photos and all kind of stuff for it so I've got a lot of information and it's going to be an exceptional story thank you all so much for watching this episode on the t38 crash here in Montgomery
