today we've traveled a few miles north of my home there's a place up here in the top top of one of the ridges of the impact crater called Jasmine hill and gordon's we're at Jasmine healing gardens today and just to explain to you what that is Jasmine Hill it was conceived in the early 1930s by a couple named Benjamin and Mary Fitzpatrick and it's grown into this very large outdoor museum that features real and reproductions of famous Greek and Roman works of art the fitzpatricks have a long backstory but they came here and they wanted to build a garden to pay tribute to Greece they made over 220 trips to Greece to purchase the art and the artifacts that are here in these gardens if after Benjamin and Mary Fitzpatrick passed away a new couple took over Jim and Elmore Ensco well in 95 with the Olympics looming in 1996 here and you know down close to this area they were in Atlanta they built a new building at the front of the property called the Olympians center the front facade was designed as a recreation of the temple of Harrah which the ruins from the temple of Harrah are actually here on this property in 1996 as the Olympics are getting ready to start the Olympic flame the torch that was carried that gets carried around before each of the Olympics start it started at the location where the temple of Harrah set in Greece and it ended here at the temple of Harrah ruins here and Jazmyn Hill before we go outside there's a few statues here from ancient Roman Greece here's the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles charioteer of DM wearer now we're gonna go outside into the gardens even though this is only a few miles from my home I have never been here so we are getting to see this together at the same time for the first time immediately when you come out of the door the first thing you see is this pathway here there's a statue look at these old know which would call them cauldrons or buckets or something here statue the some dogs here and this that you hear behind me this one right here this is Socrates this statue is an exact replication of the one that is in Rome can you see it even has the Roman inscriptions in it go up a little bit to this nice fountain here looks like a little child I talk this way they have flowers planted all the way down look at this marble whale this is also from Rome with the inscription of all these little children carved out of the marble now we come into a section here with some more statues this is the combatant Venus de Melo so this one's missing a head but it was Venus of Cyrene the girl playing knucklebones knucklebones was a game that they would play back then where they would actually use bones they would also use die and of course I I don't know how the game worked but I know they they used real bones from animal and they would use die and they would gamble for coins a dying goal and in the time of ancient Rome depending on where you were raised where you were born and raised that is what you were called if you were born near Thrace you were called a Thracian of course if you were born in Rome you were a Roman and it worked like that so the dying goal that's because that's where he hailed from he was a goal there's another statue here surrounded by the shrubbery and the pond this place was originally owned by a couple named Benjamin and Mary Fitzpatrick back in the 30s is when they started this project this was their home they lived here on the property as they turned it into a modern day work of ancient Roman art you probably already know that I am fascinated with world war ii and history but ancient Rome also fascinates me because of the lifestyle that they lived back then you know of course they they did a lot of things wrong but they also did a lot of things right there was a TV show that came on Starz several years ago now called Spartacus and it was a pretty good portrayal of life in ancient Rome I actually thoroughly enjoyed the series and I hated to see it be taken off the air if you haven't seen it in ancient Rome interests you it's definitely something you should watch check out this statue here behind me [Music] she was on the street much like a shopping center today they would just have vendors outside and a marketplace and there's another gardenscape area here it is beautiful with this [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] of course they had pools in ancient Rome but that's how they had to fill them up they they would fill them up either by purchasing jugs of water which would just take entirely too long so generally they build up a pool by using rain water even though some of the things they did were questionable but they knew how to build stuff the main attraction here at this park is right here behind me this area here is the ruins of the temple [Music] this building would have been absolutely breathtaking surrounded by these columns now the ruins here in the middle have filled up with rainwater now we are out in front of the Olympian Center this building here is the only complete recreation of the temple of Harrah in the world the ruins are here the spot where it was once located in Greece is in Greece but this is the only reproduction of it and this is what the ruins and this is what it looks like during the first Olympics in 70 and 1776 BC that would actually not be building that would be open [Music] a trip to Rome to see the the ruins of ancient Colosseum and those type of things that's up there on my list of places that I want to go this is a Roman gladiator judges I can't believe they actually have the ruins from the temple of Harrah here on the property and we got to see it and walk on and it was amazing but that's the last thing here Jasmine Hill I'm gonna head back home now and then we have a birthday party to go to later this afternoon and then tomorrow we're leaving again for another adventure it's been a beautiful day it's been over 70 degrees just absolutely wonderful here I think it's supposed to rain and the temperature is gonna go back down again tomorrow that Suns going down tonight so I'm gonna go ahead and in this video everything we saw this morning at Jasmine Hill was was really cool I like old ancient Roman stuff like that and I really enjoyed it so I hope you enjoy watching it too thank you all for watching this episode and I will see you tomorrow have a good night [Music]
