it's a very cool day here in Alabama which is a shame and it's fixing to be April mother nature come on what are you doing warmup so today I have a treat and right now it's a treat for me I'm gonna say I don't know if you guys will enjoy it or not but it's my favorite topics if you've know me if you've watched this channel for quite a while now you know that I have a love for science space NASA that type of stuff today is going to be right up my alley [Music] today I'm at the US Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville Alabama you can see right here is the Space Shuttle and way over here it's a Saturn 5 rocket with an Apollo capsule on the top of it it's gonna be a fun day an interesting thing as you walk in they have the solar system in scale as it would be in the universe throughout their parking lot we just saw your anus here's Saturn the next one way up there is Jupiter and you're the rest of them Mars Earth Venus mercury and the Sun perfect opportunity for a photo op directly out front of the Space and Rocket Center they have this amazing aircraft this is a blackbird this is an 812 oxcart article 127 blackbird this was used in flight there's a lot of people here today I guess because it's spring break here in North Alabama the very first room is a room with some artifacts in it these are all inventions that were made in space or by NASA flexible LED lighting removable hard drop static is a smart medicine bottle a gas tank of liquefied gas tanks for outer space knee braces surgical tools fiber-optic guided missile space blanket as a whole to the patent for the slingshot the flying car the ballistic missiles the rocket-propelled missile that's a b2 Wernher von Braun here's the bust of Wernher von Braun and if you're unaware Wernher von Braun was actually a Nazi in Germany he was a Nazi scientist who developed the v2 rocket which was a first of its kind and it's the rocket that they used to fly into London and when the war was over he came to America and pretty much any of the multistage rockets that NASA's used in the history of the space program it was his idea this is a mock-up of Wernher von Braun's office including all the models of the rockets that he was directly involved in building including the Apollo Saturn 5 there in the corner this is actually Wernher von Braun's drawings as he was dreaming of getting a man into space here is a replica of the James Webb Space Telescope I know it's dark and it's hard to see but right above us is the Hubble Space Telescope this is the future of space travel this is a future space habitat this will fly along with the isolette so Ryan's spacecraft which will take people to Mars and even beyond Mars it's 1/3 scale but it would hold up to six people or do they even have a doll there you can see and showing you as of a human compared to all this they could live in it for years as they travel to Mars or beyond and this is their space camp area this is where Space Camp comes and they have a mock shuttle back there where the kids can see what it's like living in the shuttle they also you can see these nodes there those are mock notes made up exactly like the International Space Station so they can learn what how astronauts live in space there's a giant picture of the space station here these are actually space used mmm use or this one is developed by Lockheed Martin the astronaut which strap is selfie on right here and use these controls to fly around space without being tethered to the space shuttle or the International Space Station here's an astronaut's glove that was worn in space also a computer monitor from the space shuttle Atlantis another cool thing here is they actually have their own neutral buoyancy tank for astronauts to practice going into space where they go down in the water and it simulates the environment of space and right inside of this window you can see inside of their neutral buoyancy Tweety [Music] there is no astronaut training today apparently nothing floats so when you go down here is just you're weightless it's just like being in space and they have different tasks that you can perform the underwater neutral buoyancy tanks that are in Houston are is way bigger and actually has a full-size of the International Space Station in it this is an amazing piece of history here this is a neutral buoyancy spacesuit that belonged to Wernher von Braun I'm kind of hungry but I'm gonna walk outside and do the outside section first which is coincidentally my favorite part and the reason it's my favorite part is because this is where all the rockets or what's like this one directly here in front of us this is a Saturn 1b the smaller version of the saturn v which is located off to our right this one did not have the capabilities of going to the moon but if they needed supplies or to send an astronaut to outer space they use this one [Music] you see as we're standing underneath the Saturn 1b Alex that it's already pretty tall in itself you can actually physically walk underneath it and seeing the engine compartment these giant mechanisms that hold it in place we're actually the ones they would use to hold it in place on launch day as well before weren't Wernher von Braun created the v2 his first iteration of it was the v1 and they have one on display right here behind me and go back to any World War two footage and they talk about these jet engine powered Rockets flying into London and causing all that mayhem this is a US Army PGM 19 Jupiter missiles this rocket here is the u.s. army NASA Juno this is the PGM 11 redstone rocket for the US army this is the Redstone Jupiter Juno 1 which was used to launch satellites in the faith into space the Explorer 1 satellite this funny-looking thing here is the NASA mobile geological laboratory it was being designed as a lunar rover when NASA decided that it wasn't practical it was just way too heavy to fit on to the Saturn 5 rocket [Music] if you haven't noticed yet this is why I love the outside part of the park this is the Lunar Lander this entire section is a mock-up of the surface of the Moon what is interesting is they have modeled this landscape here with the craters and where the Lunar Lander is sitting this is the exact amount of the Apollo 15 landing site craters in the exact same places rocks in the exact same places the lander in the exact same place and the flag over here they have a Chinook here you can look at thee this is what the inside of a Chinook helicopter looks like the troop transports or they can do cargo crates right up the middle any have you ever heard of Skylab but after NASA walked on the moon after the funding got cut and we were no longer sending astronauts to the moon they had spare parts a lot of spare parts sitting around this section behind me being an Apollo capsule so they took those spare parts and converted them into America's first space station for example this section here is where the astronauts lived while they lived in space this was made out of the outside hull of a Saturn 5 rocket they good at the inside of it so it was no longer a rocket and made it into a livable habitat we are done with about half of the space & Rocket Center so now we're gonna move back towards the cafeteria we'll get us something to eat and then we'll check out the Space Shuttle we'll also check out the Saturn 5 and there's a whole nother bit Museum for us to check out fun fact that was walking towards the cafeteria and looking at my phone on Facebook and four years ago today exactly I was here four years ago today I was standing and looking at the Space Shuttle that's a pretty interesting coincidence this cheeseburger and a grilled chicken salad topped off with a coca-cola and a souvenir Cup and they have a menu that you can pretty much order whatever you want that's just what I chose lunch is over now so we're gonna head back outside and head over towards the Space Shuttle exhibit here we are walking up the wind's blowing pretty hard right now walking up under this space shuttle this space shuttle that's here behind me is the Space Shuttle Pathfinder the Space Shuttle Pathfinder has never flown in space and that's because it's designed as that wind is designed as a prototype it weighs the exact same amount as a space shuttle does but it's made out of wood and metals that can't be used to fly in the space so unfortunately while this is absolutely beautiful this one never flew into space even without ever being launched into space it's still an amazing piece of machinery it is the exact same size as the other space shuttles the exact same weight everything is the exact same about it but the exception it was it was not made to fly into space the piece of machinery here actually flew in space it flew inside of the cargo bay of the space shuttle and this is imp s the mission PEC your equipment support structure they could attach satellites or tool bags anything that astronauts needed to work on in zero-g environment with bay doors open wonder I always wondered why the orange fuel cone has those inventions in the side of and I never knew why just as equally impressive it's not more impressive to me my favorite era of space travel is right here this is the saturn v apollo this is the rocket that sent me in to the moon it's to date the saturn v rocket is still the most powerful rocket ever built by anybody in the world and we're gonna make our way up here but if you look inside quite possibly you can see those giant engines in there and that's because that is a Saturn 5 that flew inside of Saturn Hall hanging from the dome ceiling here as one of the first airplane the rocket will free man from his remaining change the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet who will open to him the gates of heaven dr. Wernher von Braun now we are entering Saturn Hall with this mass of Saturn five rocket this is the Project Mercury procedure simulator John Glenn at one point in time sit right inside of that and touch those knobs here and then we arrive to the project Gemini the difference in mercury and Gemini mercury held one person Jim and I held to this is absolutely amazing I've never seen this before it's not been here on jiminy for astronaut ed white did America's first spacewalk where he went out in space he was tethered to the spacecraft the door is open he came out they have all of the gear right here there's a famous video clip of him floating around outside of his capsule there's it why it's helmet his boots that he had on line and his gloves right there next to them this is the tethering unit just kept him securely fastened to the Gemini capsule and here's the maneuvering unit absolutely amazing I can't believe that they have those here this tag here says it says it's on loan from the National Air and Space Museum the Smith's don't the Smithsonian Institution and DC the absolute ridiculous size of this f1 engine it's amazing most of you probably know Apollo 1 the first test mission of Apollo 1 was scheduled to fly into space it wouldn't go into the moon it was just going to travel around the earth and but they had a problem a fire ignited under the seat and it wound up killing astronauts Gus Grissom astronaut ed white which I talked about earlier he was the he did he was the first person to do a spacewalk and new astronaut Roger Chaffee they all three died inside of the Apollo 1 capsule and it was caused by a fire underneath of Gus Grissom seat and then they also had a problem with the hatch when they needed to get out that they couldn't get the hatch open to let them out these suits were the backup suits for all three of those men to the left Gus Grissom in the middle ed white and to the right Roger Chaffee that fire and result they couldn't get the latch open it caused NASA to develop this piece of machinery which is an easy latch and unlatch for the Apollo doors so they could get in and out of the spacecraft faster in the case of an emergency this is a swing arm when the astronauts would go up in an elevator that would get to the very very top and they would walk this exact platform during the Apollo missions to get on to the Apollo rocket the Neil Armstrong Jim Lovell Buzz Aldrin all of the astronauts that we know and love from the Apollo era they walked this path that I'm walking right now I'm walking in their exact footsteps when they would walk across that platform that we just walked across of which is right here they would get right here into this little room this was called a white room this is that white room right here this white room service almost all the Apollo missions it's amazing to think all these years later you can still walk the same exact footsteps that they walked and now we are at the and this is a real working lunar rover it did not go to space because obviously they can't bring them back but it was a test vehicle for here on earth and directly behind it is the lunar module obviously the lunar module can't come back to earth either but that was a test lunar module used for testing and simulation during the Apollo missions it could fold up actually that pretty small and I didn't even realize that it folded up like that obviously it had to strap to one side or the other of the lunar module oh here it is it's trapped right up to the side of it and they were able to unfold it and lower it out I always wonder how they got it there how they did this I always wondered how very interesting the technology that was invented during the Apollo program is amazing here's an engine off the bottom this would have been the engine that you see here at the bottom of the limb they would have used it to land softly on the surface of the moon there's a lunar module strut just like the strut off of your car designed so once they land it would absorb the impact of landing so it wouldn't care the lunar module to shreds but then this top section here would have split off from that this lower section stays on the moon so there are all the lunar missions those are scattered throughout the moon and the top section is what took off and he was able to take off because of this engine here it's a one-shot deal it can only be fired once they had to throw the button and it launched them into space and then once they got into space they had to use thrusters to maneuver them to line up with the Apollo capsule so I really can't believe this is behind me right now it's the Apollo 16 capsule this was actually launched into space went to the moon and then traveled back to earth the parachute that dropped it back down to the planet back down to the where it actually landed in the ocean is actually hanging above it as well that is the actual parachute from Apollo 16 absolutely amazing you see these open slots there on the top those were the parachute decks the parachutes were inside of those and then we're exploded out by the machine you see there in the center you can see their hatch there at the top these holes that you see in it it's how they're able to fly it it shoots the jettisons of a air out of compressed air to cause it to flows [Music] but guys when it come up and take a look inside the capsule [Music] it kept afire absolutely amazing though you can even see the heatshield how it's completely burned up from re-entering the atmosphere absolutely amazing here's a moon rock this rock came back from the moon on Apollo 12 the mission right after Neil Armstrong Ron Young actually wore this in space here's a space suit their boots that they had to wear there's a pressure suit that they would wear underneath this suit just as the extra layer to keep them safe there vinyl cooling tube suit in the back that would run ammonia through it to keep them warm or cool in the vacuum of space and this yellow bag is how they went to the bathroom but look at these it's a hand cast of all three Apollo astronauts this is the inside of the lunar module this is what they would fly down at land on the moon it's no bigger than a couple of telephone booths this is the Apollo simulator [Music] all day plastico all their switches they need a window having mock Skylab this is the Skylab this is a training Skylab of course the real one didn't know that come back to earth this was used for training purposes only there's a famous video of the astronaut running that trill around in circles while he was in space amazingly this was made out of a saturn v fuel tank all of this was put together out of a Saturn Bob fuel tank appears the section that was made for Skylab you can see matter of fact they have it sitting right next to the Skylab training and you can you can tell the resemblances just in the trainer and Skylab itself and July 11th 1979 four years earlier than originally expected Skylab re-entered Earth's atmosphere most of the debris fell harmlessly into the Indian Ocean some components of it did crash into Western Australia these panelists here on the wall these are solar arrays these solar arrays or the same exact ones that were attached to Skylab and directly here in front of it is an o2 tank from Skylab you know I just told you that Skylab burned and parts of it landed in the Indian Ocean parts of it landed around Australia well this is one of the parts that landed near Australia you can see as it came through reentry it burned up and it landed and busted it all up but this piece was part of Skylab there were six of these inside of Skylab so the astronauts could breathe this is a suit that astronaut Richard Garriott wore aboard the International Space Station you can see it looks a lot different than our suits that we see now and that's because it's Russian all astronauts now ride it get we get rise to the International Space Station through Russia on their Soyuz rockets because until Orion officially launches and launches astronauts into space we don't have a way to get them there I want to say they pay like a billion dollars to have a seat in a Soyuz rocket but this is his father's dr. Owen Garriott who flew on Skylab 3 in this year will be America's next phase in Space Flight this is the SLS Orion and this is on a one-tenth scale you can already see how tall it is up there and this is a 1/10 scale this will be what launches astronauts to the moon in the future plus to Mars you see here they have this model of the Saturn 5 rocket that they have fixed up so you can see what it looks like on the inside see once this first stage ran out of fuel and it had two tanks one at the bottom from nitrogen and oxygen and that would fall off you can only imagine how much weight that is with the engines and everything and that would call off making this extra light so this section had five more engines ready to burn so as soon as that one would fall off and get just a hair away from it just far enough away so that could fall back without being damaged by the engines igniting the these engines would ignite and it would have oxygen and hydrogen those two tanks as well and this would launch them even further on out then once it ran out of fuel this section would break off these sections will flop out exposing the final stage that would continue launching it deeper and deeper into space off of one solid engine because at this point there's not that much weight left at all we launched it further and further into space and once it finally ended then we were left with Apollo which by that point they would have already jettisoned their tower but so this stage breaks off this section pops up exposing the lunar module then these and this section separates with Apollo as you can see here that astronauts would sit all the way at the very top Apollo would pull out swing around come back it would dock in with the lunar module then would reverse its thrusters to pull the lunar module out of there and then off to the moon it goes I'm ready to launch well that's gonna do it for the US Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville Alabama so now we've got a hit back we've got quite a bit of a drive to get back and get Amy to work on time so with that being said I'm gonna go ahead and in this video now I want to thank you all for watching and I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I do I absolutely love this place it's one of my favorite places in the whole world I hope you all have a good night and I'll see you tomorrow [Music] [Music]
