the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office operates one of the largest county jails in the state of Florida the average daily population topping 3,000 inmates the jail is also over largest component in the Sheriff's Office operation there was a whole new ballgame for me I never experienced the correction field so it was definitely eyes wide open but I love my job I love you know coming to work and you know I think at end of the day I think it's rewarding as far as going home and feel like you in some way help or accomplish something the majority of Pinellas County Jail inmates are awaiting trial and so their security custody and care are managed by hundreds of Detention deputies on a daily basis it is a career it's not just a job you come to work every day and it's something different there's always new challenges you're always learning I wouldn't change it for anything the career the agency have provided me so many opportunities and once again I think it somewhat molded me as the man that I am today to become certified by the state detention deputies attend a 12-week academy and then receive another 12 weeks of training in the jail after that they're assigned to a shift one of the many inmate housing areas it's definitely exciting it's something that I think I never really knew a lot about before I was hired with the Sheriff's Office but when the opportunity presented itself I just kind of ran with it and I've enjoyed it ever since and I started at the jail it's been awesome experience this job is great opportunity here to branch out even if you want it to go to the road you can do a crossover cat at me and go to the road if you look if you wish a lot of opportunity and agency to do many things the agency is so widespread I've been involved in so many entities and so many teams with the agency starting from the honor guard and then I became a member of the corrections response team currently a trainer in Pinellas County Sheriff office training division and at this point with this agency is probably where I in my career if I have anything to do with it you know I'm not just stuck in one area within the agency there's so much room for growth and to gain experience a detention deputy's primary responsibility is the safety and security of other staff members and inmates as well deputies work with civilian medical staff from inmate health care and civilian staff members who have a role in jail operations on a daily basis the the care that they have to give people who haven't sought care in years why do people come here and have them into the doctor so they encounter a lot of medical issues from the small to the major and the jail really saves a lot of people lies when it comes to the care that they provide I like to feel like I'm helping people and in this position I absolutely feel like I do I feel I have a rapport with the inmates they will come to me with personal issues that I help resolve and it makes me feel like a better person I love my job I love my job I mean this is his second undone in my book I mean I've never met a group of people like I met since I've been working here I can't picture myself doing anything else than this writer and I love knowing that when I go to work now I'm gonna go home the same way I came in every day hello I'm sheriff Boggs all teary we will continue to provide our detention deputies with the training and tools they need to ensure their safety and the safety of the inmates in the Pinellas County Jail thanks to our dedicated and professional staff our jail consistently earns high marks and Industry inspections and is nationally accredited in operations management and inmate health care the detention of Correction staff are making a positive contribution to the criminal justice process here in Pinellas County which is just another example of how we are leading the way for a safer Pinellas learn more about the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office by visiting our website and following us on social media
