recently we went inside the star with the special operations and environmental lands units for a vehicle training session 7 days a week the environmental lands unit patrols the 19 Aquatic and Upland preserves that span almost 14,000 Acres within penis County they utilize various allterrain vehicles or ATVs to navigate the rough terrain at a lesser impact to the environment and to cross areas through which typical Patrol vehicles wouldn't fit we spoke to environmental land Sergeant Brett moat about the skills trainees must master and the Maneuvers they must complete during the training each exercise teaches the deputy how the ATVs and mpvs handle these exercises are very important since these vehicles handle uh much differently than a standard police car we start with the basic nomenclature and the very basic operation of an ATV or MPV then we move on to basic operation skills such as how to properly accelerate break turn and stop the ATV each exercise builds upon the previous lessons and in the end the deputies apply all these skills they have learned the sheriff's office has six High Mobility multi-purpose wiel Vehicles commonly known as Humvees after the humies are stripped of their military equipment deputies can utilize them during high-risk circumstances that require larger Vehicles like hostage situations or during severe flooding as they can fed up to 4T of water what whether environmental Lance unit deputies are trailing Through The Preserves on an ATV during a daily Patrol shift or deputies throughout the agency are piled into the Humvee responding to calls after a natural disaster within its borders or a neighboring County the penis County Sheriff's Office is grateful to have these vital resources at its disposal this was brought to you by inside the star your window into the pellis County Sheriff's Office
