But I got to record while I'm in here. I mean, like I said, I've been doing this for 20 years and it's just like that means nothing to me. So, um, our policy is that you we ask that you not That means nothing to me. Okay. My policy outside. My policy is that I do. Oh, shoot. Yeah, it is still on. It is. Yeah. My bad. I went to the public defender's office to do an open records request to find out how many of their cases end in plea deals. Hi. Hi. Hey, how are you? How may I help you? Uh, I want to do an open records request. Okay. Are you filming us? What's that? Are you Are you filming us right now? Um, just uh just doing a digital. Okay. The sign says no cameras filming allowed. Oh, really? Yeah. There's a sign on both doors. Yeah. And then are you're looking to open get files opened? Um, I need to do an open records request. a cororo request for um I'm looking for uh the dispositions on all of the cases from 2023. Okay, let me I'm going to grab my supervisor. Okay, thank you. And your camera is off. H your camera is off now. It doesn't um we specifically see no camera. Hold on. Let me see. I think it's off. Can you check it for me? No, I'm not gonna check it. You specifically say no. Oh, I'm not going to come out there and check it for you. I think it's off, but I'm not sure. Okay, let me She's on her office or something. Okay. Thank you. Do you guys have just a a Kora request form? No. Okay. I'll just write it then on a piece of paper. Okay. Okay. Okay. Thank you. Okay. Okay. She's on her way, but she said all requests like that are are through the state office. Um I can't just leave it here then and have you forward it to the state office. You'd have to just reach out to state office. I mean, but you can look at their address and everything. And this is you guys are the county public defender. We're state. Okay. State. Um. Okay. So that's why it goes through the state offices. I see. I might have even been Isn't there a county public pretend or defender? I'm I'm sorry. I I didn't mean to that. I've been calling it that since I was 16 years old. Not that I know of. I'll have it style. No, not that I know. Okay. I'm new to Colorado. I was in Arizona before. So, it's a little different over there. Hi, how are you? I just told this to the state office. Okay. Yeah. Okay. I'm going to uh public defenders office. I'm going to I'm I'm just writing it up right now. Public defenders office. And then um I'm just going to make a phone call real quick cuz I was told that I could just drop it off here and that you guys would forward it. One of my attorneys. No, it it it has to strictly go through the state. You have to I mean I can give you the address, the phone number. Okay. Yeah, sure. I'll do that. Sure. Yes. Oh shoot. Yeah, it is still on. It is. Yeah. My bad. Step away. I'm sorry. I thought it was off. Awesome. Man, that's going to be a long drive. How far away is this? About an hour, a little less. Okay. I'm just going to finish writing this up and then I'm just If you don't mind, I'm just going to make a phone call real quick to make sure. Fine. Do you mind turning off your camera? Uh, I'll just go over there with it. Wait, but it does say no no filming or anything in here. We've got two signs on the front door and this door. Uhoh. Do you mind turning it off? Why is that? Uh, just that's our policy. I've uh I mean I've been doing stuff like this for like that's fine. 20 years and I've been recording for 20 years while I do this. But our policy is to not have any recordings in here. Is that Do you mind stepping outside making your phone call? I mean sure I can step outside to make the phone call, but I got to record while I'm in here. I mean, like I said, I've been doing this for 20 years and it's just like that means nothing to me. So um our policy is that you we ask that you not that means nothing to me. Okay. My polic My policy is that I do. Okay. So, do you mind stepping outside making your phone call? Uh, yeah. I'll just go ahead and make it right over here. Thank you. Okay. Outside the outside of this room, please. I'm sorry. It's just it's my policy to record. I hope you understand. just my policies. And did you want I can get you in touch with my supervisor before I go? You want me to do that? Here, let me let me give you my supervisor's number. We don't need it. Are you sure? Okay. Are you just Are you quitting? Are you resigning? Okay. Do I really have to go all the way up to to submit a public records request or are they supposed to take it at this office? They're doing that because they want to just give you the runaround because they don't want to have to take it. But yeah, you can give it to them and if they don't accept them there, they can forward it to the proper channels. Okay. Yeah. In New Mexico, the statute specifically says that they're required by law to forward it to whoever the holder of the records is. That's how they're supposed to do it here, too. But they're they're probably going to tell you um like they told me that I had to go online to do it, but the Americans with Disabilities Act requires local governments to make reasonable accommodations for those with disabilities. So, right, they can't actually make you go online. Right. Right. And you can give them a verbal request, too, and they can just write it down if they want, but that's that's official. And I'm trying to do a Corora request for the disposition of all the cases from 2023. and they're telling me that I can't do that here and that I have to go to an office and to submit my request. Uh, that doesn't make any sense. You should be able to do any any coral request um through each city. You should never have to go to Yeah, it definitely seems absurd, but I wasn't sure uh exactly how the legislation was written here. And when I walked out into the hallway, the staff locked all the doors and started calling the police. The police told them that I can be here conducting business and that I can record my business and refused to respond for them. So, they kept everything locked down. Entrance. No cameras. No cameras. Ma'am, can you just take my request so I can go? Sorry you're dealing with that. That's okay. There's nothing to deal with. Just take the core request so I can be on my way. What is wrong with you people? How it works? Yeah, it is how it works. State law says you take the request and and you fill it. That's it. It's not that hard. What is wrong with you people? Uh public defender's office just absolutely refusing to take an open records request. I mean, one of the most simple things that they're one of the most simple jobs that they have, take the request, give it to the records clerk. And for some reason, they've decided to just be absolutely disgusting to me. They think it's funny. She just said that uh it's going to be the same thing as last time. We're going to call the police. They're never going to come. The police are refusing to even show up now. They've locked they've locked my building. They've locked it down. You work here? Yes. Okay. Are the two ladies at this desk always Usually? I I'm new here. Oh, okay. Are they They don't look new. Do I look new? A little. Newer than me. Are the ladies at this desk always nasty? Well, they have a hard job. Oh, really? What's their job exactly at the front desk there? Well, taking applications, taking phone calls. If you could let them know I'm uh I thought you were the guy that they sent for me actually and just trying to turn in this quoro request. You're not the records guy, are you? No. Okay. Definitely not. All right. They just said they were sending somebody, so I wasn't sure if it was you. All right. No, this doesn't work. You supposed to get in here. It wasn't me. I Let's see. I think they locked them all. There she is. She's letting you in right there. She's coming over to the door for you. Great. Hey, ma'am. Are are you the one I talked to on the Can I just give you my open records request? Okay. Can I just give you my records request, ladies? Ladies. So, I decided to leave for a while. I cruised around town for a while. In a quarter mile, turn left on I found the Ghostbusters. While I was out, I called the number that they gave me for the place that they wanted me to do the open records request at. The people at the place I called were shocked and said, "No, you do your open records request right there in the building where you were at." Then I went back and quickly ran in my door before they could lock me out. Hey there. Hey, I called the number for the place in Ladies. Ladies, I called the number and they said that they're I I need to do something here. Can you help me? I can give you this information. Okay, thank you. you is there like an email address or something that I can I'm going to give you the packet and the form to fill out. Okay. And do you have like the procedure? Thank you so much. So, I can just come back in and turn this in later. Uh, nope. You'll read the procedure. We don't take it. It has to go straight through the state. Okay. up in uh Okay, thank you. Thank you. Is there a reason you're all leaving? Um just we were told to. We're just following orders. I constantly hear that government works for us and is our servant. In the book, The Most Dangerous Superstition by Lark and Rose, he says, "If government works for us, if it's our employee, why does it decide how much we pay it? Why does our employee decide what it will and won't do for us? Why does our quote employee tell us how to live our lives? Why does our quote employee demand our obedience? Like I said, I've been doing this for 20 years and it's just like that means nothing to me. So, um, our policy is that you we ask that you not That means nothing to me. Okay. My policy My policy is that I
