This is Sheriff Rick Staly with an update on Hurricane Ian clean-up and resources available. I had the opportunity to go to Charlotte County and join our Emergency Response Team, which have been deployed to help the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Charlotte County, which is in southwest Florida and includes Punta Gorda, took a major hit from Hurricane Ian. In fact, the Sheriff’s personal home was destroyed. Our brothers and sisters at the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office are tired and many have homes destroyed or damaged. There resources are strained so it’s our honor to assist them as they know they would be here for us if the need was reversed. Even though Flagler County was spared the worst of Ian’s rampage, many of you have damage, flooding or need other help to recover. Residential damage in Flagler County is estimated at over $10,000,000. If you are one of these residents, know that there are resources available to help you. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has upgraded its disaster declaration to include individual assistance for Flagler County to assist residents with expenses related to Hurricane Ian. Individuals and households in Flagler County can apply for temporary housing assistance, basic home repairs and certain other uninsured disaster-related needs. You can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, or call 1-800-621-3362, or use the FEMA mobile app. FEMA also has workers walking door-to-door documenting needs and providing information. If you are not sure if the FEMA worker is legitimate, ask for their official FEMA identification, which includes a photo of the person. In addition, the Small Business Administration has added Flagler to the list of counties eligible for business and home disaster loans in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Those who wish to apply have until November 28th to complete the application by going to: DisasterLoanAssistance.SBA.gov/ELA or call 1-800-659-2955. Our recovery from Hurricane Ian is underway, and while it will be a long road for some of us, please know that we are here to help you. May God bless Flagler County and Florida.
