Nobody call police. >> Denise is out of the house and in handcuffs, but officers still don't know what they're about to find inside. >> Call police. >> Sir, is somebody hurt in here? >> Let me get the shield. >> Ready? I'm going to I'm going to plug. Let's go. When officers step inside, much of what they see is redacted from public footage. But what isn't hidden tells you enough. Rohan has been shot multiple times. >> You want to cancel the barric. We're making announcements at the door. We have units to the back floor. told you making a trip. >> Traffic, >> huh? >> Look, we're just detaining me for right now. I'll catch you and figure out what's going on. While Denise sits in the back of a patrol car, officers inside the house are making a discovery that will become a permanent scar in the memories of the two 14-year-old boys who witnessed it unfold. At the moment their son dialed 911, Rohan was still breathing. He was hurt, holding his shoulder, possibly struck there. But there was one final act that erased any hope of recovery. >> Subject down in a bedroom. Stay inside. Inside bedrooms and advice inside. There's two other units coming inside. >> I have the I have the somebody detained. >> We cleared the house. We're doing a secondary now. >> Got it. nail down looks like to the head. >> Outside, neighbors begin stepping out of their homes. It's human nature. When you see a street filled with flashing lights, you look. But what they will learn wasn't something anyone would want to know. >> Hey guys, do me a favor. Get inside for right now. Find. >> Yeah. >> Hey my man, go inside your house. Go inside the house. >> Go inside the house. >> 24 units. We're all backed out of the house at this point to be a crime scene. No one else can be making scene. I don't have a task. Let's starting. >> Brother, do you have crime scene tape? >> Is that >> okay? You have crime scene tape? >> Yeah, I guess. >> I would take it out, but I have I have the female detain in the car right now. Can you see babe? Appreciate it. >> Inside the scene is chaotic. Officers quickly realize they're going to need more units for what's ahead. >> Cancel rescue res. >> We didn't she didn't she didn't want to speak to us. So, >> do we have 14 for her or no? >> No, we didn't. She didn't want to speak to us. >> The cops come and see what Sergeant wants to do. >> Okay. Um, >> can you help him out with the the tape for now? >> Delta 24. We have any units in the back still. >> 948. >> The back. Proceed security. >> Hey, can one of you guys help her out with the tape? >> Got a couple Yankee units back here. >> Careful. We're going to replace you guys with patrol. Also, any patrolman on this channel, please bring crime tape up front here to the house. Any unit that can clear copy road 94 38 46 on >> all units that made entry to this residence stay on scene. Everybody else that does not have a test. >> Did you want to move it to traffic? >> Move to traffic. Have all units uh that are going to remain on scene. Come over to traffic. >> All units remaining on scene on the 33. Switch over to traffic. >> I'll be 109. >> All right. Hey, just just make sure you keep an eye on her. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> She moving around and stuff like that. >> She's calm. >> Just just keep an eye on her. You're uh Yep. Keep an eye on her. You can check on her. say, "Hey, you know, are you okay?" And then that's it. Just make sure she's she's good back there. >> The only thing she asked was about the kids. >> Tell her. You can tell her that the kids are with us. They're safe. >> Yeah. >> Nothing else. >> Pretty take off. >> Huh? >> Take off. You won't know who lives here. If we try to call, but it looks like it might be her at home. >> I just got her name. >> Ma'am, do you have a license on it? >> Yeah. Set my phone um in the room. Phone in the room. >> Yeah, it's in my What's your name? >> D E >> D E N I. >> N I >> S E >> S E. Do you have a middle name? >> Nicole. >> In the meantime, Denise is taken to the police station to know what exactly happened in that house. Is your last name Malcolm? >> Okay. Denise, right? >> Yes. >> Would you prefer I call you Miss Malcolm or Denise? >> Denise. >> Just waiting for my partner. We're going to get started. >> You know where they >> um they are going to Well, that's a good question. I'll ask you when he gets in here. I don't want to start without him here. But yeah, basically uh um you have a sister nearby. I heard >> your brother. >> Your brother. >> Okay. What's your brother's name? >> Clifford. >> Clifford. Brother Clifford. What? >> What? >> Lake. >> Lake. >> L A K E. >> Mhm. >> Okay. What's his phone number? >> I don't know. >> You don't know. Is it in a phone? Huh? >> Is it in your phone? >> Yes. >> Where's your phone now? >> At home. >> Okay. Where did they live? >> It's on my license. I don't know. >> You used to live with them. >> But you use their But you [clears throat] use their address. Okay. All right. We'll figure it out. Um, yeah, they're probably going to go hang out with your uh your brother for the time being. Um, but my sergeant and uh, another detective are on scene right now handling that. >> So, what we're here to do is talk to you about what happened tonight. Right. You ever watch those TV shows? >> Adult crime and stuff like that. Obviously, the other day I have to read this to you. You want to read it while I'm talking? Both read it together. >> There's a moment when she lets out a small laugh. It's brief, almost misplaced. Whatever unfolded inside that house hasn't fully caught up to her yet. The reality of what this means for her and especially for her children seems delayed, but that delay won't last. >> And your son twins. >> And your is it your ex-husband? >> No, my husband, >> but you're separating. Is that correct? You were getting a divorce. Your son told me you were getting a divorce. You hadn't gotten it yet, though. Okay. Just wanted to clarify. You got a good kid, by the way. I didn't He's a great kid. He really is. He told me a little bit about the history with you guys. Look at me. Huh? He told me a little bit about the history, and I'm sorry you had to go through that. Okay. Honestly, honestly, nobody should have to deal with somebody betraying them on a constant basis. He also told me that you guys were living separately in the house. How long has that been going on? >> Separately year and a half. >> So, you've been living in two different rooms for a year and a half. Not before that. >> No, no, before that. >> Okay. Cuz he wasn't sure anyway. Yeah. He didn't even know you had a gun. H. >> He didn't even know you own guns. He was like, "I've never seen him shoot before." I was taking my kid out at like 10, so I guess it was weird like that. Um, did you just buy that? >> No. >> No. >> Maybe a year ago. >> Oh, you had that long? Just kept it from the kids for their safety? >> Yes. >> Okay. Thanks. Talk to me. Look at me. You want to talk to him? talk to him. >> I'm James, by the way. >> I should have introduced myself to meet it and not >> like I know he's a good-look guy. >> Just got this new kick where I'm growing my hair out like your son. So, it's like [laughter] >> you can tell it's to my disdain. >> I'm the young one. >> I'm the old one. >> What were you born? >> Huh? >> What year were you born? >> 79. >> Oh god, I'm still older than everybody. I'll give you [laughter] >> I'll take it. >> Um, your watch. [clears throat] >> Is that a smartwatch? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Can you do me a favor and give that to him for me? We We have to take it from you. >> Is that connected to your phone? >> No. >> No. >> Does it have its own phone number? >> No. >> Okay. >> Never seen that one. >> Can you shut those off? >> I don't know. >> Yeah. Don't just leave it then. >> Um Oh, you probably have to open it up to shut off, don't you? >> Okay. some >> um so did he your son didn't tell me if he uh your husband was abusive. I'm just going to go out and say it. I'm trying to be as as as cordial as possible, but >> No, he wasn't physically abusive. Okay. So, you bought the gun a year and a half ago not to protect yourself from him? >> No. >> Okay. >> I don't think a year and a half ago. Maybe a year ago. >> Who'd you get it from? >> What kind of gun was it again? >> A 30 380 or 38. >> Okay. And uh it was I saw it for a half a second. It's semi-automatic. Right. So it was a what do you remember what kind it was? Cuz a burrito. >> I'm sorry. >> A burrito. Bur >> burma. >> Bur >> something like that. >> I think it's a 38. Have you ever shot before that you got that gun or is this the first time you owned one? >> The first time I own one. I've been to the range a couple times. >> Yeah. >> She struggles to pronounce the name of the firearm. The same firearm she possessed. The same firearm she used. If you're finding this case interesting so far, subscribing helps support the channel and it makes sure you don't miss future stories. Now, let's pick it back up. So, why don't you tell me what happened tonight? I mean, we all pretty much know, but you know, I want to hear your side of the story. I want to get it from you because you have a right to tell me what's going on. >> I just I just slept. I just I couldn't do it anymore. >> What What made you upset? >> We've been going back and forth. Um I was going to move out. He kept saying, "I'm going to take the kids away from him. It's better we stay together." But I don't want to live like that. >> So, what happened tonight that made you, as you put it, snap? >> It's just the lies. the the constant lies, the constant. You don't want me to move out. You don't want me to leave. You keep saying you want your family, but you don't because you keep doing what you're doing. So, we're going to do a um we're going to have a little family thing tomorrow because it's Labor Day. So, we went to Sam's. We got meat. We got stuff. And we're going to >> like a cookout barbecue. >> Barbecue. >> Okay. >> When did you do that? Today. >> Yeah. He came back and all of a sudden he's telling me his um friends need him to come and go somewhere and he's going to go um go with his friend Chris. Then I see a bag. Chris, why do you need a bag? So the lies just keep coming again and again and again. >> What bag? >> Need a It's almost like a overnight bag. Like a backpack? >> No. Like >> a duffel bag? >> Almost like a carryon but a tiny one. Like you went on a business trip and you have the >> Yeah. Did it have an extended handle on that? >> That type of one. >> Gotcha. Okay. So you confront him with that. What happens now? >> We just started arguing. >> And where were you when this happened? >> The arguing part. >> Which room? room. >> I'm sorry. >> The room. >> Which room? >> The middle room, >> which is his room or your room? >> Yeah, his room. >> Okay, that's pretty much it. >> Well, did you bring the gun in with you or did you have to go get it? >> You went and got it? Where was it? >> There your bedroom. Did you keep it locked away somewhere? >> I have a little um came in a little case and then I keep it in the in the closet. >> What kind of case? Like a black little black case. They usually come in like plastic black cases. >> Yeah. >> I usually hide it in I have a lot of stuff packed up in my closet. So I usually just hide it behind the stuff cuz nobody goes in my closet. >> Like a shelf up high. So that's where it was when you went to go get it. >> I tossed the case in the dirt basket. >> The laundry basket. >> Laundry basket. >> If these things escalated to the point of buying a gun, then yes, the relationship must have been deeply broken. But broken does not equal fatal. Was it loaded already? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> You loaded it. Like that's how you put it away. You have it loaded. What? Does that mean like full magazine and one in the chamber? >> Like did you have to rack it? >> Yeah, I have to rack it. >> So when you took it out of the box, open the case and you had to rack it. >> Yes. >> Or was it already ready to go? >> No, we'll keep it ready just in case the kids find it. We're happy they wouldn't have found it, but I didn't keep it with one in the chambers. >> Okay. >> You mind telling me what made you go get it? I just hope it's right cuz last night we were talking happy and the whole family thing. And he always does that. They always make it seem like we're working on our relationship and then you just sideswipe it with some BS. How long has this been going on? almost three years. >> So, you uh did I mean do you specify anything today that like you said he was going to go with his friends and like at what point did you get mad >> before everything happened? I said we were just planning the barbecue and everything and then obviously he had this planned it out all all along. So the whole barbecue was a lie. He just made it seem like his friends just call and they're planning some road trip out of town and he's just going to go for a day or two. What are you talking about? Why you got to sleep while it's done? That was about an hour before you got your gun. >> Well, that's when he mentioned the trip that he's going to go. >> So, he just started arguing from then, but it didn't get heated until like a hour later when I realized he was serious. Thought he just But it was serious. He was going. >> So, were you in his room when you found out he was serious when he realized it? Anyway, >> the whole the whole conversation was in his room. In the kitchen, in my room, his room. >> But once you realized he was serious, >> we were in his room. And that's when you walked out and went to your bedroom and got the gun. >> So tell me what happens when you walked back in. >> Nothing. >> What? >> I just pull the trigger. >> How many times? >> I don't know. [clears throat] Felt like a lot. >> More than two. >> Yes. Long painful relationships can drain everything from you. Anyone who has stayed too long in a broken relationship understands how heavy that feels. Even their kids knew the marriage was strained. That says a lot. When you've invested years, children, identity, walking away feels impossible, but it is still possible. When the cops showed up and started giving you commands, they heard one more pop, one more loud bang. What was that, Denise? I know what it is. I just need you to get it off your chest. Look at me. Don't let it eat you out. Get it off your chest. You'll sleep better. You'll live better. Talk to me. Look at me. Thanks. Hey, look at me. I'm right here. Hey, tell me. >> Shouldn't have lied. She just let us divorce. >> But why the last shot was you? Did he say something to you that really pissed you off at the last time? Where'd you shoot him? It's okay. You can tell us. Where' she? Was it in the back of the head? I'm sorry I couldn't hear you. >> I guess so. >> Well, you were there. I wasn't. >> Doesn't matter. I did it. As I said in the beginning, I know I I just I want the specifics. I don't want anything, you know, because your kids were trying to kind of stick up for you and not say stuff to us. Good kids. I get it. But I don't want them to get wrangled into this. So, I'd rather hear every specific from you. >> They were in there. They're in the living room. >> I get you. Look at me. I got one that one question I need answered. I need you to answer that one question. The police are there and your son's left. >> I was supposed to shot myself. >> That was your plan. >> I was supposed to shoot myself. [snorts] >> What would you do instead? >> I heard him yelling. I just froze. >> Even if there was domestic conflict, even if there was cheating, none of that requires a death sentence. Separation exists. Divorce exists. distance exists. Violence is not the only exit. If she can live with the knowledge that she ended his life, she could have lived with the knowledge that he was simply out of her life, especially with two children watching and learning from every choice made. In cases of toxic relationships, things can spiral. But in this case, there's no indication that he was threatening her life at that moment. The escalation came from somewhere else. The hardest part isn't just that he's gone. It's that two teenagers now have to live knowing their father died at their mother's hands. >> That pissed you off. >> So that last shot was supposed to be for you, but you pointed at him instead because he was yelling. Tell me. You tell me in your own words. Don't let me guess at this. I don't want to guess. It's okay. But we're almost done. Let's just get this out. Hang in there. Okay. Couple more minutes. Was he on the ground when you shot him the last time? >> He was on the ground. >> Was he on his stomach or on his back? >> Um, he was on his back. >> Okay. And when you shot him that last time, where did you shoot him? I know you're thinking about it. Speak while you talk or excuse me, speak to me while you're thinking about it so I can hear it. [snorts] Please [snorts] Tell me, I want to end this conversation with you. I don't want to break this up again. I don't want to come back to this. I want to get it over with just like you do. So, just tell me, please. Cuz I understand the first three shots or four shots or whatever it was, you don't know how many times you pulled the trigger where you hit him, right? Cuz it just happened kind of fast. But that last one, I know you remember. So tell me that one since you can't tell me the other ones. You do that for me. You ever? >> Well, I just wanted you to tell me first before we go. >> Well, you need to tell me this. You clearly wanted to kill yourself at the end of this. What happened? >> I don't know. >> Talk to me. >> I I don't know. That was the plan. That was the plan. >> But why didn't you do it? There's a reason why. Just I just froze. Just >> You said you heard him yelling. >> Yeah, I heard him yelling. >> I heard him yelling and I just started doing what they said. >> What you said? Mhm. >> Cops weren't there. >> Oh, it wasn't a cop. >> No, I mean they weren't there when that happened. They They were outside, but they weren't in their room. >> No, I wasn't saying they were in the room. >> So, I I need to hear from you, not them. They didn't see it. I just want the truth. The whole truth. Nothing but the truth. As we say, I don't want to guess. I don't want to write something down that might not be true. I don't want to say, well, you know, she just did this instead of this. I'd rather just tell the story as it is and be done. >> You let me do that, please. >> You have the story >> up until that point. Just that last part. It's all I need. >> Doesn't matter. >> It does to me. >> I didn't. >> I know you did, huh? I know. And I know you're distraught about it, but I just want to know, was he on his stomach when you shot him, or was he on his back? >> How did he get it in the back of his head? >> Okay. Did you shoot the last time he was on his back? He shot him in the face. Is that what happened? He must have said something to you to stop you from killing yourself, which really upsets you even more than you were already upset. But it stopped you. Look at me. It stopped you from killing yourself. And it pushed you to shoot him again. What did he say to you? >> I didn't It does matter. Every little bit matters. >> I did it. It's okay. I did it. >> I understand. But it doesn't matter, honey. It does matter. >> I didn't even see anything. >> How do I know that if you don't tell me everything? >> Cuz if if I if I know this much noise, they didn't see anything. >> But if they were in the living room, was right there. >> They didn't see it. >> She avoids going back into the details. Maybe because saying it out loud makes it real. It's one thing to survive a broken marriage. It's another to live knowing you ended the life of someone you once chose to build a family with. >> I wish they weren't dirt. >> I know. Where's the gun at? Where'd you put the gun? Okay. When he told me to come my hand up, I think I put it on the um the the desk in the room. >> Okay. >> And you came out and you were apprehended by the police. >> Yeah. >> Okay. And where were your boys at at that point? Um, I don't know because I locked the door behind me. When I was in the room, the door was locked. So, I'm going to be guessing where they were. >> Okay. Was there anyone else in the house other than the four of you? And you lived there with your two sons and your husband, correct? >> Does your husband ever like leave and stay long periods of time or go out for two days or three days and then come back home? >> No. He'll stay up late sometimes, pretend he has to go to work and fix something at work or his friends call him to do something. >> What does he do for work? >> I see. >> And where do you think he is when he's out when he's supposed to be working? >> Another woman. Do you have any confirmation that that's true or >> I found out about someone which is why we were in separate rooms. I ask him to leave out taking his stuff out of the room cuz that was that was an office >> and that happened two years ago and >> how did you find out about this woman? um similar to what he's doing the he got to go help this person do something, he got to go help that person do something. And did you confront this woman or you just did she call you or >> I didn't call her cuz he said she was just a friend and I was overreacting. >> And how did that conversation go? That first when I the first time I called um [clears throat] she didn't say anything. We spoke another couple months later and I'm like I know something is going on. This is and she said yeah. He still denied even though she said yes. He still denied. >> And that's the only woman that you know about or is there any new? >> I know. So tonight, did he mention did you mention anything about infidelity tonight during your argument? >> Yes. >> And what did he say? >> And you did you believe that? >> Did you what did you say to him? >> And what did he say to you? >> Listen to his story. He didn't say that he was Did he tell you these friends he was going to go hang out with? >> Huh? >> Did he tell you the friends that he was going with? >> Um, he did um his friend had a birthday dinner recently. We were all supposed to go, but I didn't go. I didn't feel like I let him and the boys go. That was Sunday. He was claiming the same friend still celebrated his birthday and was going to go to Port St. Lucy. >> Do you still think the same girl is around or do you think it's someone new? >> I think it's her. >> Have you ever met her in person? >> No. >> Just talk to her on the phone. And does he have like I call it a throw down phone. Does he have a throw down phone? I think he has his personal phone and his work phone. >> And do you believe that he's using his personal phone or his work phone to meet up with this girl? >> His personal phone. >> And when you confronted him tonight again about infidelity, what did [clears throat] he did he deny it? >> He did. >> But you didn't believe him. >> And then you felt betrayed. >> I did. because he told you pretty much told you a story again, another story. >> Have you just know why plan the cookout? Why plan all these things and then come an hour later to tell me your friend is going to Port St. Lucy? That was planned. That didn't just pop up out of nowhere. He had it all planned. So, he had no you had no plans of doing a cookout or barbecue. It was all a lie. >> Yeah. Do you feel stupid? >> I did. >> And you're a little bit upset at him because you >> keep believing every time he comes with this crap. >> Yeah. He's telling you a dream or trying to sell you a dream and you're unfortunately falling back into the trap. And what's your husband's name? Ronnie. >> Ronnie. >> Did Ronnie know you had a gun? >> I can't believe me. I didn't show it to him. >> So, when you walked out of the room the first time and went into your room to get your gun, did you tell him you were going to go get it? >> No. And then when you appeared with it, did you say anything to him? >> I just told him, "I've had enough. I've had enough. >> You've had enough. You're tired." >> Intuition can be powerful. Suspicion can feel real, but suspicion is not proof. And emotion is not justification for violence. Whatever the history of that marriage was, the law only sees one thing, a life taken. Now on my Patreon, watch the interrogation of a father accused of killing his baby. The detective snaps and starts hitting him on camera. See the full video at patreon.com/strangerstories. Plus, >> did he have enough time to say anything to you before you started firing rounds? have his phone. I think he's just call my name. >> And at this point, where were the boys? I think I remember was watching TV was I think maybe in his room. So when you started firing rounds from in the doorway area, right? I think they were frozen cuz I look I look around and um They were just staring at the window to come any closer. >> I thought the door was shut. Did I get that wrong? >> No. >> I just shot it in my [clears throat] I was at the doorway when when I saw that they were in the living room. I went in and closed the door behind me. So when you shot him when you were in the doorway, did he fall on the ground? [sighs] >> He didn't fall. He was more like trying to get away like fall. >> And then once you closed the door, what was he did he say anything to you at that point? >> He was talking >> because now you're mad. >> Just And once the door shut, how many rounds do you think you fired then? >> I wasn't going to find any more except from me. only fired one more. And when you fire that round, did he say anything else? Is that a no? >> No. I don't remember. >> So, you're shaking your head now, but then you're telling me you don't remember. >> I want to say something that he had said earlier that he said at the end, but maybe it wasn't at the end. Maybe it was earlier. >> Let me ask you this, Denise. Did you want Ronnie dead? >> No. Did you want to scare him? >> I should. >> Yeah. >> Oh, I was put on kill myself. Yes. Okay. So when you went in the room and closed the door, he was still alive. Correct. [sighs] Because was he still talking when you closed the door? And then when you fired around again, he stopped. And at that point you heard the police correct. >> Mhm. Like them, like I always say, I have four sisters and my mom raised me. I'm the only boy. So, I know your boys love you till the end. Even though you're in this situation, they are going to love you regardless because they know what you've been through. Detectives mentioned that the boys tried to support their mother. They stood by her, but now they have to stand on their own. And no matter how kind relatives or guardians may be, there's something about home that can't be recreated once it's gone.
