You all right? >> You're all right, Donovan. Hey, >> you're all right. Talk to us, buddy. >> Hey, Donovan. No, >> nothing in the back. >> You're all right, Donovan. You got a medic coming for you. >> Hey. Hey. >> Come on, bud. >> Hey, come on. >> Hey, S43. Where's that medic? >> This is 20-year-old Donovan Lewis, struggling to stay alive after being shot. This is the moment when everything that could go wrong has already gone wrong. >> COME ON OUT. COME OUT NOW. >> That dog's going to bite you if you don't come out. >> And from this moment on, there is no version of this night that ends well. And one choice made in less than a second will change multiple lives forever. >> Yeah, probably a >> little bit higher or is he good there? And this is the last moment where things could still go differently. But what's about to happen removes that possibility entirely. >> August black. >> Kill your cameras. Kill the cameras. >> It is August 30th, 2022, and a team of Columbus Division of Police officers are about to enter Donovan Lewis's apartment to serve a warrant. >> Dash cam. You can see Deputy Dion Williams initiate this February traffic stop. >> Can you copy case info? >> It's good. Let's go. >> Yep. Go ahead. >> Don't turn your camera on for two minutes >> so they don't get my thunder. >> Two more minutes. >> Oh, I already turned mine on. >> And [laughter] the address on >> Okay, I guess we'll try both of them then. Thank you. They have B. They have H. >> H. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Second floor. >> Yeah, it's right up the step. >> Yeah, but the car There's no car here today. >> The officers appear relaxed, even light-hearted as the officers divide into two teams. One checking escape routes behind the building and the other heading straight for Donovan's door. None of them realize what is about to happen here in just about 29 minutes. >> Yeah, it's right above the steps. This one right here. >> We need anybody out back in case he jumps out. >> Yeah, >> I'll I'll go out back. >> I'll go. >> I'll go. >> Hello, Thunder. >> I don't know. Donovan. >> There's only one window there. >> This is probably her car. Bunch of baby stuff there. There's no window. Do you have another radio battery? >> Oh, you suck. >> While others focus on canvasing the back of the apartment. Officer Dorsy climbs the stairs. He is looking through this window into the apartment, trying to determine whether anyone is inside before locking into position. >> Forgot this dude's name. Huh? Chance. What's his name? >> Donovan Lewis. >> He said he don't remember. >> I think it's Donovan Lewis. Go back and look at my car. I got it pulled up. I really don't remember. Can't see anything through here. And I can't see anything through there. >> Oh boy. Don't. You're going to walk in front of Dole. Can you see him there? >> 5 minutes pass with repeated knocking and announcements and still no response. At this point, officers have to consider the possibility that Donovan Lewis may not even be inside the apartment. Quick pause for a second. If you're enjoying my videos, consider subscribing. We're incredibly close to 1 million subscribers. Hitting subscribe really helps us get there. Your support means more than you know. >> Sh. Can you see anything right here? I would go watch that one window just in case. I said I would watch [snorts] that one window back side. What happened to you? Thought you always did the round hard. >> Not until I know they're inside. >> Y I heard something. >> Hey yo D. Based on what they're seeing and hearing, officers are increasingly confident that someone is inside the apartment and actively choosing not to respond. Apartment H, come to the door. It's Columbus Police. Police Department, come to the door. Apartment H. Come to the door. You see him? Can you see him? >> I just heard a voice. >> I literally just heard a male's voice. Hey, come to the door. >> Yeah, go do that. Officer Jack Randall begins looking through any visible gaps or cracks they can find, trying to spot movement inside. Meanwhile, Officer Dorsy calls the woman whose complaint started this entire chain of events. Donovan Lewis currently has three outstanding warrants, all tied to minor or procedural issues. One stemming from a misdemeanor accusation on August 10th, 2022 that involved domestic violence against his pregnant girlfriend. Another issued two days later as a part of a probation review related to a separate minor offense from 2 years earlier. The third warrant exists because Donovan misses a court date after the notice is sent to the wrong address, a clerical failure that still places him on the list of wanted individuals. This is officer Joseph with Columbus Police. Are you inside your apartment? Hey, can you come to the front door? We need to talk to you. You don't live at apartment H anymore? Is that where Donovan's at? Where do you live now? We We're We're concerned for your well-being. I'm just I'm I'm I'm checking on you. >> What's a lot? >> Okay. So, you where do where do you stay at now? >> In Dublin. So, who's in your apartment? >> So, do you should anybody be in your apartment? >> Whether someone was supposed to be inside or not no longer matters. Someone is inside the apartment and whoever it is appears to believe the officers will eventually leave. Apartment H, open the door. I can hear you inside. Come to the door. Hurry up. I'd like to tell Dorsy to turn her car off cuz I can't hear. >> Hey, Dorsy, will you kill the engine on that cruiser? >> Kill the engine. >> Huh? >> Turn the car off. Even as officers prepare for what may come next, Officer Dorsey is still on the call with the original complainant, gathering information as the situation escalates upstairs. >> Okay. So, you're not in your apartment right now? >> Okay. We know we think there's somebody in there and we're concerned and we want to make sure everybody's okay. Well, we're yelling trying to get somebody to open the door cuz >> Okay. Where are you at in Dublin? >> At a hotel. >> Okay. Which hotel? >> Look, we're really If if you're inside your Is Donovan inside the apartment with you? 104 to 901. >> Okay. So, >> okay. So, >> you know, we're concerned that there might be someone that's in your apartment. So, is there any way that you can meet us here to open the door so that we can go in and make sure that your stuff isn't get your apartment's not getting burglarized? [snorts] Whoever is inside this apartment is not here to burglarize anything. The door is locked. There's no movement toward leaving and nothing about this behavior suggests someone planning an escape. >> Apartment H, come to the door. Columbus police 104 to 9101. >> Donovan Lewis, we know you're inside. Come to the door. >> Apartment H, come to the door. Columbus police. We're not leaving. >> Windows. >> We know you're inside. Will it go up? >> Huh? >> Will it go up? >> Probably. >> Yank curtain down. Wait. Maybe wait till Dorsy gets up here. Just wait till he gets up here. At this point, officers identify an unlocked window, which is the perfect opportunity to look inside without forcing entry, but they can't act on it yet. They need backup, proper cover, and officer Dorsy is still coordinating with Donovan's girlfriend. >> Okay, I'll do that. Thank you. Try to make some calls. She's full of She's like, I'm in a hotel, but I don't want to tell you which one. She's like, "I'm not at home." Let me go tell Chance. I don't know it. Which one is Do you hear movement? She's like, "Let me get out of the way." She's like, "I'm at hotel in Dublin." I'm like, "Which one?" She's like, "I don't want to tell you. I don't live there anymore." I'm like, "Well, can you come here before?" I was like, "Can you come here and make sure that your apartment stops are broken in?" I don't have a key. >> Once Dorsy is back upstairs, the team has enough coverage to carefully attempt access through the window. >> We know you're inside. We're not leaving. >> Once he gets back up here, cuz she said she doesn't live here anymore. >> I know. It's only 10 days old. Careful. Careful cuz it's got those goggles on it. >> I can see through this a little bit. It's just I call [ __ ] I think it's locked. Uh I think it's locked still. It just looks like it's unlocked. >> Come to THE DOOR AND TALK TO ME. DO IT NOW. >> COME TO THE DOOR. HANDS UP. >> Now there's noise coming from inside the apartment. That changes things. If Donovan Lewis is in there, he's either lost control of the situation or he understands the waiting game is over and escape is no longer an option. She's like, "I haven't seen him in like a week." But she was being super evasive. She's like, "I hear screaming." I'm like, "Yeah, it's us. Are you in the apartment?" She's like, "No, I'm in a hotel in Dublin." >> Well, somebody's in here. The dead bolts locked. I'm not walking away from this. >> I agree. Donovan, if you don't come to the door, I'm going to kick it in. >> Come back to me. >> If I have to come in there and get you, you're going to get tased. >> Come to the door and talk to me. Do it now. [snorts] >> Not here. >> Come to the door. I'm going to boot the door out. >> Open the door. >> He said hands up. You cover >> what? >> Cover the door. Come to the door. Open it up. >> Hey Ricky, can you come down to please >> Columbus Police Department H? Come to the door. >> Yep. Radio 3295. >> Okay, open the door. At this moment, it appears Donovan may be preparing to surrender. For the first time, it looks like this might end without further escalation. By now, everyone is in position. Officer Dorsy is covering from above. Additional units are alerted and a K-9 team has been requested. This is Ricky Anderson. He's 59 years old with three decades on the force. And until now, this midnight shift has been no different from countless others. But what he's about to do in the next five minutes will define the rest of his career. >> Which said >> I look at it this way. The longer I stay, the more money I'm getting and I'm getting closer. You know, I would have made more money staying. So I was I was on the fence on the fence, but it just pissed me off when >> Oh, absolutely. >> You know, I did my job >> and I got because I was doing my job because the allegation against me for the EO. Now they said Shimberg said inappropriate you know he basically you know he said change on search warrant we have to have chief well chief wasn't certified so they had Becker's name on certif >> and apparently she said well Shimbert had said change the B to a P for pecker and she said well did anybody else make these she well my lieutenant with six months earlier I had yelled well she says I yelled at her I chastised her she was constantly showing 3 hours. She come in 3 hours with no sense of urgency on her part showing up on homicide. And when she get there, like the one they told her to call, told her to call police three. >> Okay, I'm on the way. >> With a K9 unit on the way, officers at the scene are making another attempt to bring Donovan out, but they're about to encounter an unexpected turn. I just released another extremely intense case on my Patreon when a suspect shoots a cop in a police station shows a man driven [music] to desperation from concern for his friend and decides he will use force to get his answers. What happens next is shocking. You can watch that and many more at patreon.com/strangerstories plus >> he said he's not Donna >> that opened the door. No, you got the best spot. You got to duck down. Ain't nothing going through that concrete. >> Huh? >> Just duck down if you have to. Jack, just don't >> show me your hands. Hands up. Face away from me. Face away from me. Hands up. Walk backwards to me. Who else is in here? >> Oh shoot. >> Huh? >> Oh shoot. Okay, turn around. Turn around. Got another person sitting there uh on the bed. >> Don't move. Don't move. >> Well, stop moving. >> Stop moving. >> Okay. >> You're just being detained real quick. Okay. >> Who else is in here? How many people >> you want to come up here? >> Sleep. >> Okay. Relax. Stop pulling away from me. Where's he at? >> Another guy on the couch to the left >> looking for Donovan. Where's he at? >> Whose apartment is this? >> Who's your homie? >> Blue. >> Who? >> Blue. >> How old are you, man? >> My team. >> Okay. >> Who else is in the way? >> Have a seat real quick. >> I got you. Have a seat. Where's the knife? >> Huh? >> I got knives. I got knives on me. It's right there. But it's protection. >> Have a seat. Have a seat. [clears throat] >> No. >> Yeah, we'll have him hold that. >> Officers were here expecting to find Donovan Lewis. Instead, they encounter two men, neither of whom is Donovan. This unexpected discovery leaves officers with no choice, apparently. To locate Donovan, they now need the canine unit inside the apartment. >> Okay. >> Is there anybody else in the apartment? We're going to send the dog in here in a second. So, if he doesn't come out, >> so there's someone else in the apartment. >> We don't know if somebody's >> You know who's in the apartment that you're in? He's going to get bit by a dog. >> So, if he's in there, tell >> Columbus police, if you're inside, make yourself known and do it now. >> Not know who's in the apartment that you're in. >> We're going to send a K9 in in a second. >> That's ridiculous to see you know in your apartment. It's not going to bite you. [snorts] >> It might bite whoever's in the apartment that don't want to come out. >> It's not going to bite you. >> Offine unit, YOU'RE INSIDE. I'LL SEND OUT HIS DOG. This is the moment where everything changes for the worse for everybody involved. >> Come on out. Come out now. >> Hands. Hands. I heard him. >> Yeah, there's somebody back there. >> That dog's going to bite you if you don't come out. >> I'll move up. >> Okay, I'm with you. I'm with you. >> Somebody [laughter] got t >> He's got gun. >> Door shot. door shut. >> It is 2:38 a.m. right now and the situation has escalated into something high- risk. The officer who was positioned at the rear has been alerted as well. So, right now, four police officers are inside this small apartment along with a canine. All in search of a man accused of a misdemeanor and a missed court date. You want to watch that? I'm just I'm worried that the back window get out that glass. >> There's There's two windows. There's the one with an AC unit and then the glass one. >> That dog. >> This is the moment where everything is about to change. But just before it does, Officer Dorsy breaks away to recheck the escape routes outside the apartment. And then he hears something that no officer wants to hear during such escalations. >> You guys good? The that noise >> me he come out like this 24. >> What you're seeing now is the aftermath. To understand it, we have to rewind and examine how this situation escalated. >> Send that dog in. >> 911. Hands. >> HANDS. GOT SOME IN HIS HAND. SOME IN HIS HANDS. HANDS. HANDS. HANDS. HANDS. [laughter] HANDS. HANDS. HANDS. >> LET ME SEE [laughter] YOUR RIGHT HAND. >> CRAWL OUT HERE. CRAWL OUT. CRAWL [screaming] OUT. CRAWL OUT HERE. Get your hands up. All right. Cover me. I'm going to go in. I got >> Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. >> [ __ ] come up like this. >> But I mean, >> I need cuffs. I'm out of cuffs. >> HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. DO IT NOW. >> HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> This is Donovan Lewis. moments after being shot. He is clearly wounded and is asked to crawl out of the room. From here on, the video is difficult to watch and viewer discretion is strongly advised. >> Call for a 24. Hands >> 43. >> Get your hand. Stop resisting. He's pulling away. >> 104. >> Stomach. Okay. You want to go near that? >> Yeah. >> What you need a medic for? >> S43. We need a medic in here. Officer involved. >> All right. Glove up. Start rendering aid. >> Don't move, bud. >> I have gloves. I don't know where they went. >> There's two bars that are here. We have people that need to pay. >> We need gloves. That's my thing. I'll take the scene. Just worry about everybody else. >> Pat him down. Pat him down. Make sure he's good. >> It may follow procedure, but it is hard to ignore how bleak this moment is. Donovan has been shot. He's in visible pain and he's placed in handcuffs before medical aid is applied. No officer is applying pressure to the wound. And because his hands are restrained, he can't even try to slow the bleeding himself. At the same time, reality has set in. An officer has just fired a weapon and every other officer on the scene is now operating on high alert. >> First two cars that are here. >> We have two people that are detained. I'll get the You got a first a kit? >> First two cars that are here. We have some people that need detained. Let's get them out here. 912. >> I don't care. >> Hold on. >> Hold on, bud. >> All right, let's get >> All right, let's get him out to the medic. >> You want to carry him out? >> Yep. >> Jack, >> grab his feet. >> You're all right, buddy. >> You're all right. Where you guys at? >> We're coming out. >> COMING OUT. COMING OUT. >> COMING OUT WITH THEM. We need those guys detained in there in a car. >> I got >> two up here. Sorry. >> Slow down. Slow down. Slow down. This isn't how most people expect these situations to end. When they were inside, Donovan and his friends would have probably expected a taser deployment or a canine bite. Instead, these two men have just watched their friend get shot. >> Slow down. Slow down. Slow down. I can't I can't keep up. >> I have no grip. >> I got you. >> I got 104 and I believe it's 150 are about to be pulling up where we need it. Come [snorts] up to the front door. We got two witnesses we need detain. How many officers? >> Three. At least three. >> As the scene fills with responding officers, the focus momentarily shifts away from Donovan and toward the man who pulled the trigger. On its own, this could look like a moment that went too far too fast. But files, reports, and years of records point toward a larger pattern. According to Columbus Police Internal Affairs Bureau, Ricky Anderson had at least 58 internal investigations into his conduct between 2001 and 2020. 10 of those investigations were classified as citizen complaints or internal affairs cases. 48, which is definitely an overwhelming majority, were classified as use of force or chain of command investigations. In fact, Ricky's conduct issues had increased in recent years with six of the eight most recent use of force investigations occurring after 2018. >> Hold on. Hold on. I can come up like this. >> But I mean, >> I need cuffs. I'm out of cuffs. me. He'd come out like this. >> Here, hop up. Hop up. We have two people that are hit that are here. >> He freak. >> While he stays where he is, the scene continues to grow. More officers arrive, more vehicles pull in, and the weight of what just happened begins to settle in. >> I think him and Jimmy are all the same class. It must have been the CL and they're the class right before class right. >> So um >> all right I gotta go there. >> Yeah. Stay here until the detectives get here. They're in their way. >> I got him. Who's rendering aid? 19 add to the room that officers are rendering aid. >> If what has already happened isn't unsettling enough, what unfolds next raises even more serious questions. >> How many officers support you? >> Just I just want I can't I can't >> When they get him down, >> I cannot just get under his arm. Let's get under his arm. >> When they get him down, go secure the witnesses for me, please. >> I got it. I got it. >> Get him over here in the grass. Can Can we get him up in the grass? All right, this is good. Where's he hit? >> Chest seal. While this officer runs to get a chest seal, the other officer is heading upstairs to secure the witnesses. >> 4310, just be advised. You can send the medic in as soon as I get here. >> There's two witnesses. [laughter] >> Yep. >> Pat, make sure you pat him down. >> Stand up. Ready? One, two, three. Take him. >> Pat him down. He had one knife on him. >> All right. >> Meanwhile, [snorts] Ricky Anderson still remains nearby. as the situation evolves around him. Now, as Ricky said, Donovan came like this. The question arises, why didn't the other officers who had the same view as him react to that supposed threat at all? In fact, the sequence happens fast, almost too fast to register. Ricky begins to draw his weapon before the light reaches Donovan. In under one second, the decision is made and the shot is fired. Where? You all right? You all right? >> Okay. Stand by my cruiser. >> All right, this is good. Where's he hit? >> In the stomach. >> Chest seal. >> Do we have a through and through at all? >> I don't know. >> Who's involved? >> Rick. Ricky. >> Ricky. Okay. Everybody else is a witness. >> Sir, Ben, no. >> There's no exit. >> He was laying like this, so it probably went up. >> You're all right. >> We got a medic coming for you, Donovan. >> Keep breathing, buddy. Keep breathing. >> Right here. Right here. We got a medic coming for you. For you. >> Hey, I need I need your officer support. Get Ricky. >> Get him out of here. Get Ricky out of here with him. >> As Ricky is about to be escorted away, you may be able to notice these subtle cues pass between these officers before the body cameras begin to shut off. >> In this moment, the system moves quickly to save one of its own. But they're quickly losing Donovan. >> Anywhere else? >> No, just one. >> One shot. Okay, just one shot. Nothing through and through, right? >> Nope. >> All right. >> You're all right. You all right, Donovan? You're all right, bud. >> You're all right. >> Thanks. S43. Where's our medic? [clears throat] >> [ __ ] They're right there. >> Come on, bud. >> Come on, buddy. >> Hey. Come on, buddy. >> Come on. >> Got another. >> Come on, buddy. [snorts] >> Despite the response, the waiting, and the escalation around him, Donovan's heart gives out. At this point, it's worth asking what made it so urgent to arrest Donovan in the middle of the night for a misdemeanor offense. Come on. >> Come on. I'm going to hold on to this. Make sure we don't get anything coming out. >> You can send the medic in as soon as they get here. >> Yes. >> If anybody's not doing anything, let's shut down Sullivan. >> One block this way. One block this way. And then comes an unexpected turn. He's still fighting. You can hear him breathing, struggling, trying to stay alive. It's an agonizing moment to witness and the next 20 seconds may be deeply distressing. >> Atkins in the parking lot. >> Donovan, come on, buddy. >> Come on, Donovan. >> We have a stop for a sec. >> Come on, buddy. Yeah, he's still breathing. Ble up. >> All right. You're doing good, buddy. Come on. You're doing good. >> Come on, Donovan. >> That's 15. Let's get some tape off. >> Be prepared to get those cuffs off of them if they need it. So, >> one shot in the abdomen. >> Sorry. You want this red? >> He's breathing up. He was laying down. >> That's good. >> Come on, Donovan. We got you, buddy. >> Keep fighting. >> Yeah, that's what I'm saying. >> You're doing good, buddy. >> So, you got Freddy Pulse still? Yeah, Freddy P. He's doing this burrito. >> Got a seal on him. >> Okay. All right. I think we get the cuffs off here. Okay, >> let's roll. >> All right. Do we have the witnesses in car? >> Yeah. One's born in 82 and I think the other one's getting put in. >> If you have a witness, mark with them. >> Come on, Don. >> Shut down for it. >> Come on, buddy. >> Come on, Donovan. We got you. >> Come on. >> Hey. Come on, buddy. Come on, Donovan. >> Medic's here. >> Sorry. How wide do you want it? >> What's that? >> The whole street down in the parking lot. >> Okay. So, you got the roll or you got the >> Grab your gurnie. [screaming] Grab your gurnie. Get the cop. >> Hustle up, please. Good. Come on. Doing good. Come on, Donovan. >> One shot in the abdomen. >> You want this red? >> He was leaning a little bit so it might have went up. >> Yeah, that's what I'm saying. >> So, you got Freddy P still. He's doing on him. Okay. All right. We get the cuffs off. >> Yep. >> The medic immediately orders the handcuffs off. And that's exactly what should have happened. The question is why they were ever put on a wounded, bleeding man to begin with. >> Smith, what car are you? >> We got you, Donovan. The medics are here, bud. >> Come on, buddy. >> Medics are here. >> Where's between the back. No exits. >> Come on. >> Sullivan's going to be shut down between Silvin and Athens. >> Grant, >> what else do you need? >> I don't know. We should probably put somebody on the the step like Two things go. >> Yeah. Get a get a monitor. >> Straight up. Straight >> up. Probably >> a little bit higher or is he good there? >> Just a little bit. All right. >> Come on, Don. Somebody follow. >> You guys going to Grant? >> Yeah. >> After critical delays and frantic movement, Donovan is finally taken to the hospital. >> It's only one shot. No exit wounds. >> Hey, any info on him? All right. >> Grant. >> All right. The officers are going to have her information at the hospital. They're going to be right behind you. >> 20 years old, he said. >> Yeah. 20 years old. >> All right. We're taking off. >> Yep. Ready, Max? Chaos now surrounds the scene, and it's clear the officers understand the gravity of what they're facing. This wasn't a split-second decision forced by chaos. Ricky had multiple chances to slow this down. He could have waited for daylight. He could have contained the apartment and called Donovan out. He could have paused and brought in negotiators or a specialized team. He could have knocked, announced, and waited before entering his room. He could have used his taser. He could have deployed the canine. None of that happened. Instead, the fastest and most final option was chosen. >> What do you want? >> Is there a two officer car here that can hop in with a medic and follow him down? Hey, I'm getting ready to pull out. >> How do you How do you want to handle everybody that was in the >> We're just going to stay here and say nothing until >> Yeah, I'm just saying officer support. >> Who do you Who do you want to have officer support? >> Uh probably me, Ricky, and who were you in there >> right now? Coming up behind >> we were the four in the middle. >> Probably four. >> Hey, who's who are the other witnesses? I think the medic officer wise me Jack >> chance >> kill the cameras kill the cameras >> first a man is almost probably killed and then the cameras are killed what's left is a crime scene that they still need to process >> Joe's Joe will be here in a few minutes Okay, he's on the phone with the chief. >> Okay, >> let's just change the complexion of the whole thing. >> What else do you think that we need? I pretty much got everything all good. >> No, >> obvious black biracial. >> I made it a point that officers were rendering >> [laughter] >> So he read he read that off the run to me. He's like, "Well, we learn it. We learn from that one." >> Don't know. We don't >> sound like he had a knife. From what I could gather. >> At this moment, the officers are informed that someone has arrived at the scene. >> Hey, it's probably family. Indeed, it's family. Donovan's mother, Rebecca Duran, has arrived, already overwhelmed by what she's walking into. Quick heads up, there's a full collection of true crime inspired merch available now at strangerabel.com. Now, let's get back to the case. >> Where did they take him? >> What's that? >> Where did they take him? >> I'm not sure which hospital he's at, MA'AM. >> I did not know you were there. >> Oh my god. >> I was not here when it happened. >> Yeah, but you guys have police radios. >> Hey, ma'am. >> Oh my god. My god. What is your nickname? >> My name is Rebecca Durant. I'm his mom. Oh my god. How did they call his girlfriend and not me? >> Oh my god. >> Durant. >> Duran. >> Okay. No te. >> Oh my god. >> Um, what is your son's name? [snorts] >> Donovan Lewis. [snorts] He's mentally ill. Oh my god. Do do you do you have just to be clear, we're still trying to identify the people involved. >> Oh, I know it's him. They police called her. >> What is Donovan's phone number or at date of birth? >> She has a valid question. Why was the woman who filed the complaint notified before his own mother? She had been searching for her son, calling, asking, trying to find him before she ever arrived here. >> Thank you for holding, ma'am. What is your name? >> My name is Tatiana Crowder. >> Tatiana. All right, talk down. What I can do is take down your name and phone number and have them give you a call back. It might be coming from a blocked call. So, just make sure that you answer that phone. Okay. What is your phone number? >> 380. >> All right. Talk. I'll have them give you a call as soon as they can. Okay. >> Thank you. >> Thanks. Bye-bye. >> Police 100. >> Hi. Um, I was trying to see if my brother was okay and um, the police called and they haven't called back. >> Do you have an address or >> Yeah, I do. Um, it's uh, 3295 Solomon Avenue. >> Just give me one second. All right. >> Call Miss Police Tech 96. Um, I needed to try and figure out the police called my son's girlfriend that he may have been shot by the police and he I don't know if he's dead or not. Um, was there a police involved shooting just very very recently on the west side? >> Okay. Um, there's a number of things that are going on over there. I can take your name and phone number and have someone give you a call back. >> Please, because what hospital would they normally take someone? Like, he might be dead and I need to know. >> Yeah, ma'am. I'm sorry. I can't I can't give that out. Um, what But I'll have someone call you real quick, though. What's your name? >> Rebecca Durant. >> Okay. We'll have someone call you as soon as we can. Okay. >> Okay. How can I find out? Like, I need to go away with that. >> Yep. Yep. When they call you, you'll they'll you'll find out. Okay. >> Apartment. I know it's him. >> What apartment does he live in? Do you know? >> I don't know the number. That's my phone. >> Okay. >> It's the corner in the middle. >> Okay. >> Oh my god. >> Okay. And how did you receive the call? His girlfriend. >> His girlfriend called me. >> Who's his girlfriend? >> She's in of all the police reports. >> Same last name. Not married. So she called you? >> The police called her and said that he died and they revived him and then they were still working on him and he was unresponsive. Oh my god. >> I know I don't know more than you. So >> No, no, you do. You we we do. I I just we there's a process. Let me go talk to to the lieutenant to make sure that we can give you certain information and I'll get you where you need to be. I know I know you want to be with your son. My name is all over every police report >> and and I'm I'm very empathetic to that and I want to help you. Just give me a second because there's a process. >> Please just go over there. >> Yeah. Give me one second. Okay. And let me just make sure. Okay. I What we don't want is is [snorts] a whole bunch of >> There's no problems with me and no. What I'm saying like No, no, no. We don't want like a 100 people showing up to the hospital and all that stuff. Okay. Give me one second. Okay. Just be patient with [snorts] me. I promise you I'll get you out of here as quick as you can and get you where you need to be. Okay. At this point, officers are not only withholding which hospital Donovan was taken to, they are withholding something far worse. Despite resuscitation efforts, despite the transport, despite everything that suggested he might survive at 3:19 a.m., Donovan Lewis is pronounced dead. >> Okay. Um, just stay with the body until we give you a holler. All right. >> I'm just going to let her know that somebody will come talk to her whenever they're ready. I don't want to leave her hanging. I mean, it is her son. So, >> law enforcement requires a level of emotional distance. And over time, that desensitization can become necessary. But smiling officers are the last thing anyone wants to see in this situation. >> So, a detective will come out down here and talk to you. They're the ones that have to release the information to you. Okay? Okay. So, I just ask that you be patient. There's a process to all of this. >> I can't even walk over that way. >> No, I can't let you walk over there, honey. >> Is is that >> in his apartment or outside? >> I I can't divulge any of that information there. Again, there's a process and I just we have to do everything right so that there's transparency that there's scene is preserved and everything is done right >> uh for for the best interest of everyone. Okay. Um so, a detective will come talk to you. I just I know it's going to be hard. disaster. [snorts] >> What I just want to know is what hospital is that? Like if you're not he's not here, can I just I I this can wait. >> But again again that it's way above me because it's a detective. Okay. Once the detectives are crawled out, it's your scene. No matter if I'm a sergeant or not, I don't >> He's still alive and I can see him. >> Okay. I again I can't divulge any of that information and that's why I have to have a detective come. They're rolling in. I will get somebody. I promise you I want you to be where you need to be as quickly as possible. Okay? So, I'm just trying to do what I can. I just there's a process to it. >> Try to be as patient as possible. Where are you parked at? >> My car. >> Okay. Um would you While you're waiting, do you want some water or something? Okay, I'll get you some water. >> I got a bottle of water. >> Okay, we'll get you. >> Yeah. Um and again, if you want to hang out here in this lot, it's outside of our scene. You're more than welcome to do that. Uh, just don't roam around so that when I have a detective coming, that's where I'm going to send them. Uh, when they're ready to come talk to you, I'll come right to you so that we're not hunting you down and we're not wasting. >> Do you want one, huh? >> No, I'm sorry. >> Um, so we're not wasting your time and we try to expedite so that you can be where you need to be. Okay. So, um, will you guys get ready? The CP's coming. We'll have to let them in. So, >> are they going to put it here? No, [clears throat] they're going to put it over here in this slot over here. >> So, he's not in an ambulance. >> No, no, no, no, no. He's at a hospital. I can I can tell you that. Okay. >> Um, >> just pull just pull forward. Uh, can you guys just step over here for a second, please? >> What's left here is a mother who has just lost her son. There's no language that makes this easier and no frame that makes it fair. Donovan was helping these two guys who had nowhere to stay by offering his apartment when they had no other options. And yes, Ricky Anderson is a veteran officer with awards and recognition. But what he has done cannot be excused. There are some valid questions like why Donovan didn't answer the door, why he stayed silent, why he didn't just talk to the officers right away. Again, the reality is that mental illness and possible drug use cloud judgment. The standard for police exists precisely because civilians in crisis don't act rationally. If police respond by matching this behavior of unstable or panicked individuals, then the purpose of policing itself is worthless. >> It's up to you. I if you just want to put it in the lot right there on the south side, there should be enough room for it. >> Yeah. Yeah. Just pull right there in that parking lot. That'll work. >> That way detectives have enough room to pull in here and park and all that. Um so again, I I will give you as much information as I can, but I'm very limited once the detectives take over. >> He's dead, isn't he? >> I I I don't know yet. Um there's always going to be a delay. Okay. So, if if if information is passed down because officers don't have radio reception in the hospitals a lot of times and it just takes a minute. I don't have an update yet. Okay. Um >> I blew Devon's phone up and he didn't answer. >> I don't think he's on tonight. >> I That's why I thought >> Deon >> my her son, my nephew is a firefighter. >> Okay. Okay. So, again, if if you want to pull your car over here, I would just ask that you put it over here up next to the building that way. >> I don't think anybody's having church at this house. No, ain't nobody's going to bother it over there. >> Only problem around here is it might get everything stole but the >> you go. >> Oh, okay. >> When I'm like, >> like I said, I I I want to be that's your that's your baby. So, I want to be as empathetic as I possibly can and give you whatever you need, but I'm just limited at this point. Okay. >> I know. I know. I know. I'm not mad at you guys. I'm just hanging there. >> I'm just obviously the obvious. >> Yeah. I'm a parent, too. I get it. [snorts] All right. So, >> and I don't care. I mean, I mentally ill. That's I I know that's the story all the time, but it's the truth. >> She speaks about Donovan's mental illness carefully, almost apologetically. She's aware of how often grief and explanation are mistaken for excuses and sometimes genuinely misused. >> Nobody would do a goddamn thing. When he was underage, I begged the freaking prosecutor's office to get him. Not a goddamn thing. >> We look >> There's probably a good chance of it. >> Over here is like crack >> or meth or heroin or fentanyl or you name it. It's all out here. So, >> it's creepy over here. >> Yeah. So, >> I'm going to grab my cigarettes. >> I know. You don't smoke anymore, but I implore you to try one today. >> So, just hold tight and I promise you I'll get somebody to you as quickly as I can. Okay, just hang in there. If you have any questions, just ask any of these officers. They can I'm Sergeant Engles. They'll they'll just air for me and I'll come over to you. >> I'll never remember that. But thank you. >> Just say the sergeant. >> Laugh or cry, girl. I just can't. Oh my god. >> Just say the sergeant and I'll come over. Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Thanks, guys. >> She comes here bracing for the worst. Learning that Donovan is in the hospital gives her a moment of calm, a fragile sense of hope. But what she doesn't know yet is that this relief is temporary and that later tonight she'll have to lose him all over again. Ricky Anderson maintains that he believed Donovan was about to attack. But when officers later searched the apartment, no weapon was found. Donovan was completely unarmed. The only object recovered from the bed was a vape pen roughly the size and shape of a magic marker. In March 2023, Ricky Anderson retired from the Columbus Police Department in bad standing, which means he was not allowed to retain his badge or carry his service weapon. On August 4th, 2023, a Franklin County grand jury issued a two-count indictment charging him with murder and reckless homicide. Ricky Anderson has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he is expected to stand trial sometime this year. Thank you for watching.
