How'd you get the blood on your shirt? Do you know? >> Might have like accidentally gotten it on my shirt when I was looking at her. [music] I don't know. She >> like on the ground, though. >> Uhhuh. >> This is the exact moment cops realize that something is very wrong here. Very soon, the cops are about to discover Nathaniel's biggest, most horrifying secret ever. >> A piece of [ __ ] A complete and psychopath. And then to blame it on your dad. You're sick. You're a sick and you can't even no one up to. You can't even look at me in the [ __ ] eyes staring at the ground like a little [ __ ] cuz you can't [ __ ] me what you did. >> On July 23rd, 2017, 22-year-old Nathaniel Shiml called 911 reporting that his mother had been stabbed outside their home. County 911. What's the location of your emergency? >> 47 Wood Hollow Lane. >> 47. And tell me the street name one more time. >> 47 Wood Hollow Lane. >> Wood Hollow. Okay. And what's going on there? >> I think they hurt my I think he hurt my mom. >> Who's he? >> I don't know. He was wearing one of those robber masks. >> Okay. And this happened at 47 Wood Hollow. That's where your mom is? >> Yes. >> Okay. And how long ago was this? Just now I heard screaming, then I came out and she was on the ground. I don't think she's okay. >> Okay, we'll send an ambulance. Is she learn conscious? >> I don't know. I got her there as soon as I could. I don't know if he saw me. >> Okay. Are you with your mom right now? >> No, I I I got away. >> Okay. So, you left your mom at 47 Wood Hollow? >> Yes. When police arrive at 47 Wood Hollow Lane, they find 60-year-old Michelle Shiml lying face down suffering from multiple stab wounds concentrated around her throat. >> Traffic's presence is clear. They say it's clear. >> Is this secure for men to come in? >> Where are the kids? >> Weren't there kids here? >> 210 flag. >> Did you say something about kids? Who called this in? >> I believe it's going to be the the victim's son. We still have him land. He's at the house down the street. >> All right, 104. Tell him to stay there. Get a house number. We'll make contact with him as soon as we can. Go ahead and notify ISD supervisor Patrick. >> I was reading some notes. The suspect might have been >> I just got here laying out. 23. >> That's where the kids at. >> Well, >> are you injured anywhere? >> Lift your shirt also. Make sure. >> Okay. >> Oh, you got some right here under your shirt. >> Really? >> Yeah. Go and put your spot. Did you go like this? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Let me see your hands real quick. I I got some of it off in the sink. >> Okay, you washed some of it off already. >> What stands out immediately is Nathaniel's response or lack of it. He didn't check on his mother, didn't try to get help, and didn't attempt to move her to safety. Instead, he left the scene and went to a friend's house. >> Okay. When you came outside, you said you saw this person just he was running and getting back to me and he went that way. >> How far in front of you was he? kind of a little ways past her. >> Okay. And then how far was he from you? >> To that truck, I think. >> Okay. >> Did you get in a vehicle or you leave on foot? >> I don't know. >> No, >> I got out as soon as I could. >> You came in the vehicle that you haven't seen before. >> And you immediately got in your car and you left. Did you kneel down by your mom or anything or did you just get out of there? >> I looked to see if she was okay, but >> that's it. Did she say anything or >> No. >> Okay. >> Were you wearing shoes? >> No. >> He claims he kneel down to check on her, but during the 911 call, he repeatedly asks if she's okay, which is strange considering the condition she was found in. As if the answer wasn't already obvious from what he had seen. If this case has you hooked so far, you might want to subscribe. There are a lot more stories like this one on the channel. And with that, let's continue. >> All right. What's your name again? >> Nathan. What's >> N A? >> T H A N. >> What's your middle name? >> R. Ryder. >> Your middle name is Ryder. R Y >> D E R. >> D E R. What's your last name? >> Shim. >> Spell for me. S H I M M E L. >> Which date of birth, Nathan? >> June 9th, 1995. >> What is that? 69. >> Uhhuh. >> 95. So, how old are you? >> 22. >> 22. And that's your address over there? Is that 47 Well Haven? >> Wood Hollow. >> Wood Hollow. Is that Lane or Drive? >> Lane. >> Okay. >> How'd you get the blood on your shirt? Do you know? might have like accidentally gotten it on my shirt when I was looking at her. I don't know. >> She was on the ground though. >> Uhhuh. >> Okay. >> Did she say anything to you when uh you were talking to her? >> Uh-huh. >> Were you trying to talk to her? >> Uh-huh. >> Okay. She didn't answer any questions? No. And my sister's at work. >> Your sister wasn't How old is your sister? >> She's 19. >> Okay. Does she live there, too? >> Uhhuh. >> All right. When does she get off work and she's due home? >> Work now? >> Is it? >> It's about eight. >> Yeah. That's your mom or your stepmom? Just to make sure. That's your mom. Okay. >> How's you guys' relationship? Pretty good. >> We get five. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Nothing too big. All right. Cool deal. >> What's that? >> Very early on, Nathaniel points the blame at his father, Martin. According to him, Martin is responsible. And naturally, officers now need to hear Martin's reaction. Well, really, I would like to talk to you. Um, and I realize I'm talking to you right now. Um, but if you don't mind if we can bring you down to the station to talk to you down there. >> Be fine. >> Is that okay? Um, >> can I see my wife first? >> Sir, we're not allowed to let anybody in there right now. >> Please. She can't. Sir, she's only going to tell you the same thing I've been telling you for. And that's not to be a jerk cuz she's just going to tell you the truth. >> I'm really not. I'm not. And to be honest with you, I haven't even gone up there yet because they only let certain people with certain reasons. And >> listen, I'm not exactly uninformed about the procedures involved in situations like this. Okay. But this is the woman [clears throat] >> we understand. >> With whom I thought I would spend the rest of my life. Okay. We already spent a third of our lives together. >> How long were you married? >> 20 years. >> 20 years. She threw him out of the house a couple weeks ago. >> Uhhuh. >> Has he made threats or anything or >> I don't know. >> No, >> I haven't really talked to him. >> Would your mom have told you? >> I don't know. >> No. You know, what did your dad drive? >> Gray truck. >> A gray truck. Do you know what kind? You know, if it's a Ford or a Chevy or >> a Nissan? >> Smells like wax. >> This truck smells like wax. >> Yeah. system. >> Say again. >> Okay. But you don't know what kind of car it is, but it is a truck. Okay. What's your dad's name? >> Martin. Gilbert. Martin. >> Gilbert's his first name, correct? Martin's his second name, middle name. >> That's what we call him. >> Okay. And what's his last name? >> Sure. >> Same as yours. S H I M M E L. Just so I'm clear, his middle name is Martin, correct? But you can ask when he goes by. He doesn't go by Gilbert. All right. Gotcha. You know his date of birth? >> October something. Okay. >> 25th. You know what year he was born? >> No. Who does he live with? >> I think he lives by himself. >> Okay. Does he have an apartment? >> I think he rents the place. >> Okay. Did you get along well with your dad or did you get along better with your mom? >> My mom. >> Your mom. >> Okay. >> I don't think my dad might. >> Why not? Just a feeling. You would know your dad better than you know I would. So >> he used to get our blood when he was drunk. He did put me up in my throat when I was a kid. >> Oh, okay. Okay. And when did they get divorced? Your mom and and Martin? >> A couple years ago. >> Okay. Have they been able to communicate since then or was it one of those divorces where they just stopped talking? >> They've been communicating. For some reason, she keeps trying to get back together or something. >> Okay. So, he was staying with you and your mom and your sister, right? Okay. >> I kept wanting to go out because I didn't I didn't trust them. Okay. >> So, a couple weeks ago, she threw him out or he left on his own? >> She kicked him out. >> Throughout this interaction, Nathaniel seems more focused on explaining himself and placing blame than showing concern for his mother. And despite everything he's saying, none of it is actually helping officers understand what happened. So, the officers need a different perspective. Perhaps one of the neighbors who might have heard or seen something. >> So, you didn't Nobody heard nothing over here? >> No. Something wrong over there? >> Um, we had a situation. Um, can't really talk about it right now. >> Okay. I figured since I didn't come over. >> Yeah. Do you know the people next door or across the street? >> Martin and Michelle. >> Is it just a female and a male? >> And then they have two They have two children. >> Two children. Okay. Did you see them there today? >> I really didn't notice. I was working in the backyard. >> Okay. >> So, I didn't notice whose cars were there. >> Do they usually argue at all or? >> Not that I know of. >> Okay. >> They're a nice couple. Is it uh her and her is it a uh her and her son or is it >> I think they're they are two children. >> They're okay. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's there. I I don't know for sure. I've only been here like eight months. >> Okay. Do you know how old they are? Maybe. >> Um the girl works, so she's probably about 18. The son's probably about 26. >> Okay. >> All right. And then them two have kids together. Is that what it is? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> When officers speak to the neighbors, they told that everything seemed normal. But as the investigation unfolds, that normal won't quite hold up. Thus, the officers need to ask Nathaniel even more questions to find more pieces to this puzzle. >> He was really tall. I'm I'm right about 6 foot. Is he taller than me? About the same? Maybe a little bit taller. 61, 62, maybe? Yes. How much you think he >> weigh? Okay. What was he uh what was he wearing? How many arms are >> I wasn't really paying attention. >> Is he wearing gloves? >> I don't know. >> Okay. So, all you can really remember is he's about maybe 61, 6'2ish. He's thin. >> I don't know. He was tall and strong looking. >> Okay. What did he uh What was he driving? >> I I don't I don't know. >> Okay. >> Did he say anything? >> Were you and your mom both inside the house? She was inside and I was on the back porch. >> Okay. >> I heard I heard screaming and I came out and she was on the ground >> in the front yard. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And he was like the left of her back to me and I I went right and I got in my car and I drive drove away. >> Which car is yours? >> This one here. >> So you were outside and just heard the screaming. >> I was I was out in the back porch and I scream and I came out. >> Okay. And then when you came out to the front, you just saw this person running away. >> She was Yeah. >> And getting into a car? >> I don't I don't know. >> Okay. Did she Who did she live with? >> Me? My My sister. She kicked my dad out. We were divorced. >> When did she do that? >> We've been divorced for a while, but she recently kicked him out like a couple weeks ago. >> Couple weeks ago. Okay. >> This is her your dad or your stepdad? >> My dad. is your dad. >> Okay. He's he's he's an alcoholic. He says he's not drinking anymore. But >> where'd he be with that? >> I understand. I don't I don't know that you were here before. >> Like gone past. >> Okay. What's What's his name? >> Martin. Gilbert. >> Gilbert. What's the last? >> Okay. All right. I'm let them take a look at you real quick just because you got some blood on your shoes. I got to make sure that you're not hurt or anything like that. Okay. What's up, baby? >> At this point, Nathaniel's narrative becomes very clear. He is placing the blame entirely on his father, effectively framing him as the one responsible for his mother's murder. >> How you know these people? >> He's my friend. >> He's your friend. >> We'll just hang out and go from there. Okay. >> Where's the chair? >> I'm good. Thank you. Do you have one that's easy to take out? >> Yeah. >> You want to sit down in a chair? Would that be more comfortable? >> Thank you. >> Where did the uh >> Nathan, >> have a seat. >> So, you guys were over there? >> H >> What's that? >> You guys were over there? >> I I came right over here. Nathaniel seems to have already decided what his story is going to be, but the reasoning he gives for why his father would do this oddly applies just as much to him. >> Had to be my dad. >> Had to be my dad or something. They've been arguing before she kicked him out. At this point, Nathaniel begins laying out a detailed account of what he says took place inside the house. You >> smoke? >> No. Okay. You're on the back patio. >> Correct. >> Was a screen. Is it screened in or is it a glass sliding glass door or is it a door? >> Sliding glass door. >> Is there a screen attached with it also? >> Uhuh. >> So, it's just a sliding glass door without a screen. Okay. Was that screen door open or shut? >> It was open >> all the way. Okay. So, was you were in the back? Um, what was your mom was inside the house? Was she cleaning or just [clears throat] watch TV? >> I was on my computer. >> Okay. Was she >> Was she arguing with anybody that you know of or just quiet? >> I had my headphones on. >> You had your headphones on. Okay. So, listen to music. >> Well, I was watching the show. Yeah. >> You have a TV on your back patio or No. Okay. So, you're watching a show. You had your headphones on. Okay. Was it loud or is it just medium? Kind of loud. All right. So, you're out in the back and you hear your mom screaming. Was she screaming from inside the house or outside the house? >> Um, she was inside. You heard her scream. What was she saying? Do you remember? >> I don't know. I just screaming and I took off my headphones. I don't see what was going on. >> Okay. Was she yelling no or stop or anything or >> maybe? >> Okay. All right. Um, >> she was in the front yard, correct? >> Did you see her inside or did you see her on the front? On the front. >> And then um So, basically, long story short, you heard her screaming. You took your headphones off. You came from the back uh patio inside the house through the back. You saw the front door open. >> You went out through the front and you saw her laying on the ground. >> Wait, what? >> The front? >> I was I was on the back porch on my computer and I heard her scream and the door the door was open and I went out. >> Okay. What about the front door? Was that open or shut? >> Yeah. >> Okay. When you came inside, she wasn't inside though, was she? No, she was out in the front. Okay. And that's when you came out and you saw who you think might be your dad >> leaving. Okay. Was he Was he running or walking? >> Running. >> Okay. If you come out, if this is your house, if you come out of your house, which way did he go? He went to the left. Okay. >> I went that way. And you how did you get from there to over here? You went the short way. >> I went to one hollow thing. That's when I came out right this tree. >> Okay. All right. Um, did you immediately leave and come over here? Did you stop next to your mom or anything? >> Before I got the car. >> Oh, did you try to talk to her? What did you say? >> She's okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What'd she say to you? >> She didn't say anything. >> She didn't say anything. Okay. All right. >> What he doesn't realize yet is that while he's talking, the focus of the investigation is already shifting and it's shifting toward him. Now on my Patreon, watch the interrogation of a father accused of killing his baby. The detective snaps and starts hitting him on camera. See the full video at patreon.com/strangerstories plus you stand up for me just to I tried wiping them off. I think I stepped in some. >> Okay. Can you wiggle your toes? Okay. Let me see if they here. What about the bottoms of your feet? Wipe them. >> Okay. Let me see your hands again. >> Yeah, you wash your hands. Pretty good. Good. Good. >> All right. Hold on. Just I get a look at the shirt. And All right. Can you turn around for me? >> I just want to make sure that you don't have any, you know, see if you don't have any on your back. No, you do not. >> No. Just a little bit up front and a little [music] bit on your pants right there. Okay. All right. Well, I'm going to have somebody come and and [music] talk to you a little bit um a little bit um more in depth than me just to find out exactly um what had happened. I'm just trying to figure out um did you see did you see your dad's car? >> So, when you came out your mom's house, this is your mom's house. So, this is your house right where you live. When you came out, you went this way, correct? >> No, I went that way. You went that way. >> Okay. So, he went this way. >> Did he see a car? >> No. Okay. You just saw something about 61, 6'2 wearing a black ski mask? >> Yeah. >> Okay. What about a clothing description? >> No idea. Okay. Did you hear him say anything? I'm trying to I'm trying What I'm trying to do is I'm asking all these questions. trying to see if I can eliminate, you know, like if you saw um if he had an accident, it would might eliminate this and if he was, you know, this tall, then it might eliminate, you know, certain certain things, certain people, you know what I mean? That's why I'm asking all these questions like clothing and driving and and and things like that. you know, by asking them maybe we can eliminate and we just get down to like maybe three or four people and that kind of gives us a hand underneath. So, um, all you know is that your mom threw your dad out about two weeks ago, >> I think. So, >> but they've been divorced for a couple years for >> during that time. They were divorced. Was he staying there? >> She kicked him out. He was gone for like >> Okay. And he had come back. She'd kick him out again. Okay. Was she in the process of letting him come back, do you think, or no? >> She was done this time, >> so >> Okay. And that was that was two weeks ago, right? I think so. >> Okay. All right. All right. I'll be right back. Okay. Thanks for uh talking to me. >> Nathaniel lived in this house with his mother and his 19year-old sister. And now that sister is about to realize something is very wrong. >> Now, you weren't over there, were you? No. Okay. >> What's your Can you get your sister's name? That way when she comes home, it's they can have somebody meet her before she goes home. >> Can you spell it for me? >> I L A N A. >> I L. [music] >> I L A N A. Same last name. >> Yeah. >> Shiml. Oh, I may miss a call. >> Okay. And what's her date of birth? >> November 14th, 1997. >> Is she 20? >> No. 19. >> 19. Okay. And she lives here, too. Does she have a phone number? >> Uh, yeah. >> What's her number? Do you know? >> Who's that? >> His sister. >> His sister. >> Yeah. >> All right. Why don't you just hang on a minute for that? I'd call her back later. >> All right, Christian. >> I'm like her mother. Mom. >> Okay. I'm Detective Danny Conro. Okay. Be sticking by kind of probably tonight quite a bit. Um, do you know what's going on? >> No idea. I was told that she was stabbed. That's all I know. >> Who does she with? >> My brother. >> Okay. And your full name? >> Nicole. >> Nicole. Your mom's full name. >> Michelle. >> And your brother is older. I'm just meeting everybody. I just got here probably about 30 minutes ago. So bear with me. I'm trying to I'm trying to find out just as much also. Okay. Um unfortunately she's not. >> So I really need your help. Um I need to do everything in my power for you guys to get answers. I need to figure out what happened and I really need to get >> What do you need to know? >> I mean, is there anything bad been going on with this house lately? >> Well, I just be brutally honest with me. I don't care anything else if somebody's doing something illegal. That is so Just like Nathaniel had already decided who was responsible, Elana has a name in mind, too. And her version of events doesn't point in the same direction. >> My brother, he's 22. He's basically mildly autistic. ADD, lots of things. He's very difficult to live with. Never been. I mean, And I woke up this morning. I don't have to be worked on. I was getting ready. My brother left for this one Christian for the day. My uncle Greg came over. Um he was helping us and he was still there when I left for work. I've been gone since then. >> Okay. What time did you leave? 11:15. >> He said he's never been there. >> No, nobody has ever been here. My dad has been living here. He got sober. He's so been sober for like 11 months now, but mom didn't really know if she wanted to be with him right now. So, she she wanted him to leave. So, about a week ago, he went up to St. >> Yeah. My dad's upset really wants to where should >> So, where does he live in St. Augustine? >> I honestly don't believe something. >> Does he own it or >> No, I think he's just renting it. [snorts] >> Do you have his You have his phone stuff. We need to get in touch with him right now. >> Oh, he is. Okay. >> Does your mom have a cell phone that she carries around often or? >> Uh, yeah, all the time. >> Okay. And does your brother have a cell phone? >> Um, I don't know what the deal is right now. took home Thursday morning. >> Nobody's seen an area with like a >> check area. No contact. >> He didn't call me. His friend called him off his >> We'll be having a unit come at 216 in a little bit. Once he comes today, go ahead and have him run. He said that they must ship out and over there with them. >> So this was after >> Yeah. >> Has anybody else been in this house? Anybody else that has problems with you? Your brother, your mom. >> Where does your mom work? >> Medical place next to She's a medical assistant. She works one of the doctors next to the hospital in that building. >> Okay. Just regular hours kind of 9 to5 hours. So, she's been Have you talked to her today? >> Did you like a lot today? I text her when I >> I'm going to give you your daughter, but hold on a minute. >> What's your name? >> Cheryl. Cheryl. >> Her dad is on his way. >> Okay. He just wants >> Should we all just meet up at the at the office a little bit better or no? >> Yeah. I don't know if he's in any condition to give him directions to our office. Maybe we get him here and then we'll >> Okay, here you go, sir. Here's your daughter. >> Detectives move in to take over. And from this point forward, everything is going to be looked at more closely. Hello. Hello guys. Um, I don't know who everybody is. I'm Detective Annie Conrad with the sheriff's office. I'm sorry. This is all going on. So, >> hello. >> Yeah. >> Oh, yeah. No. Yeah. Hard to see. I can't see. How are you? >> All right. That room we were staying got married. >> It's okay. We It's okay. Um we're actually trying to round everybody up in one central location instead of having two different houses and stuff. Um so we're kind of trying to all meet back at the um at our office because there's couch, there's food, there's coffee, stuff like that. So um rather than trying to keep everybody outside. So is that something that you would be okay with? And I think eventually your your family and stuff will be there, too. So I think that would be better for you. Would you be okay with that? Okay. Did I don't know the um dynamic your friend best friend? What's your first name? >> Christian. >> Christian. Okay. And your full name again? I'm sorry. >> Nathaniel Ryder. >> That's right. I wanted to call you Ryder. What do you go by? Nathaniel. >> Nathan. >> Nathan. Okay. Um are you do you have anything here or are you ready to go? Is it okay? Do you want to go anybody to go with you? >> You want to go with them? Yeah. >> Is he Is this insurance? >> Brother, son, grandson. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Brother, son. Thanks. >> Sorry. Paying paying it forward for what I got today. [laughter] Um, so you don't mind? You don't mind him going? >> No, I don't. >> What time you going to be at work? >> Uh, 11. >> Oh, that's wonderful. >> Do you mind if I go grab? >> Uh, detective time. Do you mind if I He's got any injuries for the rest. >> This one? >> No, >> actually. Um, Nathan, can you come stand in front of the door kind of where we can see in the light? >> Do you have any injuries on you? >> Um, are you're not injured to begin with, though, right? No injuries. >> Here's what we're up against, guys. I'll be honest with you. Um, as far as getting in the housing and doing everything, you always want to wait until >> um realizing you guys have been 110% cooperative. You've allowed us access to your home. We still have the document stuff. The fact that he had left the crime scene here, we still have the photograph document way. We just and it stinks, but I think we need you guys. >> We're moving as fast as we can, but we got to prioritize getting him talk to I I need to go talk to him. That's our priority. We're trying to get people in route to photograph for us. >> Okay. >> At a bare minimum, if it gets too crazy, >> you know, we can just do a video or somebody. >> Is it take the special metal batteries. >> Um, usually we have one end of the >> draw by himself. >> He's just him. He, you know, entered, if will um >> he went straight to Christian's room first and then they collectively went to the phone and then he went into Christian's room. >> My phone, >> the house phone. >> Okay. And then what was the one? >> Christian only used his cell phone. >> Did he? >> Well, we can check. It's fine. Well, I guess and I only have so much information, but anyways, he did take the phone call that was placed to the cops in his bedroom that I do know for >> um but other than that, that's pretty much where he was the whole time because I was in the living room. >> Okay. >> The primary focus was going to be >> Yeah. cuz with that, you know, God forbid if if he, you know, says 30 minutes from now, oh, well, I put this here or put that there and then we have to release this house and we're safe. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Like I said, don't wait for search for and we need a battery. >> So, you're willing to sign a consent to search um to obviously go in the house. Okay. Well, that saves a lot of time. So, all right. We will get moving really quick. Try to get as much as I'll quickly. You got my cell phone. Um, if you're worried about him >> in the meantime, is there something that we should be not doing or doing? >> Yeah, you guys are fine, right? Um, I I would rather uh I would rather I mean you not be in the pictures that um that >> soon after Nathaniel is taken to the police station for a formal interrogation. >> So let's start early this morning or as early as you can remember. Tell me everything and anything. morning. I guess my mom went to work and around sometime during the day, my um uncle came over and was fixing the floor. >> Okay. So, that was today. What time did mom leave? >> Um probably around like 8 or 8, I think. She usually goes to work. >> Okay. >> I'm just going to try to take notes, but I'm listening. I promise. And then I was out there on the porch the entire day and she left the cats out on the porch and took the dogs outside to go to the bathroom with them. I was just listening to the show and then I heard screaming [snorts] and usually the slider is locked but she must have left it unlocked cuz she put the animals out there. And I opened the slider and I went out there and she was outside on the ground with a knife in her back and the man, you know, call with a rubber mask was going left around. I didn't really get I didn't see him very well. >> What is a robber mask? like I think it's called like a baklava or something. I'm not really a baklava. I don't know. They >> have the holes in the eye. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I know what you're saying. Cotton or >> it was black. I don't know. >> The questioning becomes more focused. Detectives start digging into the details, looking for consistency in his story. Sorry. >> He went over to her to see if she was okay. And my sexual boyfriends didn't say anything. I I went to pull the knife up, but then I didn't I didn't really know what to do. But then I got in my car and got away as soon as I could. >> Okay. You got in your car and you went >> I went I went the other way. I went to my friend's house. >> Where was your car parked? It's in the swell on the right. >> So if I'm facing your house, it's to the left. >> It's If you're facing my house, it's to the left. Yeah. >> Okay. So you went that way. You went the way it was facing. Okay. >> You never left today then. >> You've been home all day. >> Okay. So I I lost a huge chunk. Um we started at 8:00 a.m. Your mom went to work. Um, your uncle came over to fix the floor and then I You were in the What time did she come home? Is that when she opened this lighter or something? >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> Wasn't really paying attention. >> So, you were out back the whole time all day? >> I was Yeah. On the porch all day on the computer just looking at stuff. >> Okay. >> Is that What do you have out on the back porch? Is that set up for your room like? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you have your computer out there? >> Um, yeah. My laptop. It's my friendly lets me use it. Okay. That's Christian's. >> Mhm. >> Okay. And that's when when apparently whenever she came home is when she opened up the slider to let the dogs out. >> No, she let opens the garage, let the dogs out and went back in after they had done their thing and sometime later she let the cats out and they just played out in the porch. >> So, this was a longer period of time that goes by >> here the window. Okay. before you hear any screaming. Okay. All right. Sorry about that. I was I was confused at how much time it was from 8:00 when she left. And you don't know when she came back cuz you did were sleeping or anything or >> No, I was just only confused. >> She usually comes back around like 5, I think. >> Okay. So, usually 5:00 p.m. Did anybody call you today? >> Mm-m. >> Nobody called you today. Did you talk to your uncle when he was there? Mhm. >> Does he have a key? >> Probably. So, you're not sure how he even got in? >> He Well, we also have a spare key up front. >> Does he know that? Yeah, >> obviously. >> Mhm. >> Where's the spare key up front? >> It's up front. It's behind a thermometer. >> Is if I'm facing the door, is it a left or right? >> If you're facing the door, you have to look backwards and on the right, it's a thermometer and behind it is the key. >> Back and on the right is the key. And the thermometer. At this stage, he is no longer just a person of interest. The suspicion surrounding him is obvious. Detectives are clearly treating him as the primary suspect. >> What if I I mean, what are some of my explanations? What if somebody blames you for this? >> I don't know why. Okay. >> Well, we got to be prepared for that. >> Oh, okay. >> Okay. Cuz you guys are, you know, I mean, you you were in the house, so we got to we got to make sure we cover that base, too. >> Mhm. >> Right. Would you have any reason to hurt your mom? >> No. >> Okay. You're not mad at her or anything? >> Okay. >> You're not on any medications. I wouldn't make you act crazy. >> Nothing. >> I don't like >> I got you. I don't either. And you're You have no problems? If you haven't had any problems lately, you're looking for a job. Normal kid, guy, adult, sorry, not as old as me. Um, okay. I am going to get this information to them. Can you think of any other colors? Anything? Um, anything. Okay. I think somebody's getting you food. Are you hungry? No. You going to try to eat anyway? just to get some. When's the last time you ate? >> I don't know. I had some like snacks. She put out some rice crackers and an apple and some water. That >> she brought it out to you today. >> She left it out when I woke up. It was already there. >> This morning? >> Mhm. >> It's nice. So, she does care. >> Mhm. >> Even though she put you on the porch. Okay. >> You didn't want to admit that, did you? Well, everybody's got reasonings. >> Um, all right. I'm going to just try to sneak out really quick to give him this information and then, um, see if George, cuz you've met George, right? The other detective that was there. >> Um, I know he had a short chance to talk to you. Um, see if he's cuz I think he talked to Christian. Is that Christian's stepdad and >> stepdad and his biological sister? >> Okay. I wasn't sure the dynamics there either and I didn't want to guess anymore cuz I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. Um let me see if he's got anything else. Um but I really need you to just I think the more you relax you may remember a little more. Um >> I'm tired. I feel emotions. >> Yeah, I know. I'm starting to feel it too. I think it's just when you get exhausted and you're obviously your adrenaline is dumping. >> And just so I understand, I don't ever try to figure out how people would react in stressful situations cuz I've learned through the years that it's very different. >> Okay, I can sit here and say how I think I would react. Um, but I do have to explain things for you, so to say, because um, I'm doing the investigation. But one of the reasons that you did not call 911 from your cell phone. >> Mhm. >> To get your mom help was what again? >> I just tried to get out. I wanted to make sure I was safe before I >> That's right. Cuz you didn't know if the guy had 11. >> Okay. I I caught it for my cell phone when I was over at my friend's house. Okay. >> And I noticed you had blood on your chest, but you had a shirt on there, right? >> Yeah. I might have wiped it. I don't know. >> Okay. And your shirt is stretched. Is that just the way your shirt is? >> Yeah. >> The neckline. >> Oh, it's a V-neck. >> Oh, it is. Yeah. Okay. It just looks stretched. >> Okay. Do you have any questions for me at the moment? All right, I'm going to take two seconds. Give me two seconds and I'll be right back in. Okay. Um, let me make sure George doesn't have anything else that he can think of that I need from you. Um, before I bring Christian in cuz we have to talk to everybody. So, I appreciate it again just hanging in there. Um, and I may think of something when I get out there and chat with him. So, I'm just going to leave that and I'll be right back. Let me just get this out as quickly as possible. >> Before continuing, officers document everything. Photographs are taken and his DNA is collected. These are routine steps, but in context, they say a lot. He's now fully part of the investigation. Before we continue, just know there's a lineup of original true crime themed gear over at strangerlabel.com. It's all made with a distinct look that fits the tone of the cases we dive into. You can see everything right now at strangerlabel.com. And now back to the case. >> All right. Can I see the scratches on your arm? >> Oh, you mean this? One of those lay against the cones. Police car laying against the cones in the police car. >> I think >> those are scratches. >> Are they? Mhm. >> Weird. You know what I think is uh is kind of a strange thing is that we've been dealing with you for how many hours now? Do you know how many hours it's been? Okay. Do you know how many times you've asked any of us how your mom's doing? No. Are you going to ask? No. >> Huh? >> I don't want to know. >> You don't want to know? >> Why? She might not be okay. Tell me what you mean by that. >> I don't want to know if she's okay, but she might not be. >> What makes you sad? >> I saw her. She didn't look okay. describe that she didn't a lot of blood. >> Okay, so a lot of blood. I mean, what does that mean? >> There's a lot of blood. >> Where was the blood? >> All like all around her. >> Uh-huh. And you only touched the knife? >> I bent down and I touched her to see if she was okay. She didn't say anything. >> Uh-huh. So rather than call 911, you got in your car. >> Yeah. >> And you drove how many miles? >> Like half a mile. Not that far. >> And then they had to tell you to call 911 because I've been I've been sitting here and listening to to to your excuses and whatever you're saying. And it's it's gotten a little bit aggravating, especially when you haven't asked once how she's doing, which I think is strange. I mean, you're 23 years old, 22 years old. >> Your mother raised you and you don't want to know how she's doing. I think you know how she's doing. I think that's the problem. I think you know how she's doing. >> Is she okay? >> Why don't you tell me? >> I don't know. Why would I know? You don't know. You don't want to know. >> No, I don't. >> So then why'd you ask me? >> Because you said. >> Okay. Your mom's dead. >> What stands out here is the lack of response. He remains composed, almost detached. Despite everything, there's still no clear emotional reaction. And that's about to change. >> You already knew that, though. That's why you don't ask. Do you know how many times everybody else asked me? Everybody else asked me except for you. You got nothing to say. I'm not even done telling you the crazy [ __ ] So [ __ ] brace yourself. What do you know what high velocity blood spatter is? You don't. You have high velocity blood spatter on your shirt. >> Yeah, you do it. He was already far away. You have no reason to not call the police. But yet, you told us on a sworn statement. On a sworn statement, you tell us that you went to your friend's house because you're scared of the masked mystery man. >> Yeah, >> right. I'm sure the neighbor surveillance cameras got a glimpse of this mask mystery man too, right? >> Mhm. >> Yeah. >> You sure about that? >> Mhm. >> Yeah. Which neighbor? >> I don't know. Where is the surveillance camera? >> Okay. So, you weren't scared anymore. But then, but then what happened? So you walk up to the knife, you grab it, right? How do you get high velocity blood spatter on your shirt? >> I don't know. >> How? Just give me something, man. Don't just give me I don't know. >> I don't know. So >> you can't tell me how some of this blood splattered all over your shirt. You do this and you hit, right? The blood spatters. Okay, that's how it works. Do you know what [ __ ] physics is? >> That's how it works. If you're standing on the back porch and somebody else stabs your mother, that blood doesn't end up on your shirt. So, explain to me why your mother's blood is splattered at a high velocity. >> Why are you crying? >> No. >> Why are you crying? >> Oh, she's not dead. >> Yeah, she is dead. Oh, >> she is dead. She's dead. That's the [ __ ] that you did. That's what you did to her. [clears throat] She raised you and you killed her. >> Yeah, that's exactly what happened. You grabbed the kitchen knife and you stabbed your own mother in the [ __ ] back. What kind of person [ __ ] stabs their own mother in the [ __ ] back? >> Huh? >> Nathaniel begins to cry, struggling to accept that his mother is dead, even though he had already said so earlier. Detectives pick up on this contradiction immediately, and the pressure is just going to increase. >> A piece of [ __ ] a complete [ __ ] psychopath. And then to blame it on your [ __ ] dad. You're [ __ ] sick. You're a sick [ __ ] And you can't even [ __ ] own up to You can't even look at me in the [ __ ] eyes staring at the ground like a little [ __ ] [ __ ] cuz you can't [ __ ] tell me what you did. Which hand did you stab her with? Tell me what happened. What happened? [snorts] What happened? Hey, what happened? What happening? [snorts] What happened? All you can do, man, is ask ask God for forgiveness, man. Yeah. Tell me what happened. It's okay. Put it on, man. [snorts] It was an accident. >> It was an accident. >> I didn't mean to. >> You didn't mean to? >> No. >> How did it happen? >> It's okay. >> You panic because she was going to kick you out. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What do you think? >> Okay. >> And you guys are standing in the kitchen. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, she told you [snorts] she was going to kick you out >> and you panicked. >> Yeah. >> And And did I mean, did she do something to make it worse? I mean, what what happened? >> She was just yelling at me and she grabbed me and I just I panicked. >> Did she grab [snorts] I mean, did she grab you? >> She just grabbed my arm like just out of like just tried to talk to me. >> I panicked. >> Okay. >> And then what? >> It just happened. Where did Where did you Where did you cut it? >> In the neck, I think. >> Okay. >> And And how did the knife end up in her back? >> I put it there. So, if I can do it, [snorts] I need to I don't hate her. >> You don't hate her? Okay. She didn't deserve it. >> I'm sorry you got to go through this, man. >> What just happened? And I mean after it happened, I mean obviously you panicked again. >> I just kept stabbing. >> You just kept stabbing. >> Yeah. >> Was that in the house? >> Yeah. [snorts] >> She tried she tried to get away so I grabbed her. >> She tried to get out of the house. >> Yeah. But I was scared and I knew I was going to go to jail now. So, >> hey, listen, man. This is this is about making it. You can't make it right. >> Me, too. >> I know. I know. I know. So, all of the stabbing happened inside that. >> Yes. Okay. >> And then how did she get to where she was? >> She got outside. >> And then [snorts] just let out just watch her die. [snorts] >> Eventually, Nathaniel admits to his role in his mother's death. He acknowledges what happened yet struggles to accept that he was the one who did it. What follows are reactions that resemble something close to remorse. >> No. No. I'm so sorry. I wish I can make things right. I didn't do this. >> [panting] >> Oh god. Why? Why did I do it? Why? Nathaniel Shiml was charged with firstdegree murder. He later pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Thanks again for watching.
