Sir. >> Yes, sir. >> Not right now, sir. >> It's okay. Okay. Please tell me >> if she's okay. >> Is your wife one of the people that's in here? >> My wife, my mom, dad. >> Everybody inside's deceased. >> What is that? >> Dead. >> This is Guprit Singh. And right now he believes he's answered enough questions, shown enough sadness, and played the role well enough to go home. >> This is called a This is called a gun gunshot residue. >> Yeah. >> Evidence collection kit. Okay. >> We swap your hands and it'll tell us if if you've had any recent firearms. >> But this right here is the final stretch of time where he believes he is still getting away with it. >> You all right? I I want to go home. I want to go home. Bianca, >> look. You You He told me now that my family was shot. >> I thought it was an accident. >> You thought it was an accident? >> Four people died and he thought >> Yes. I I wasn't told anything. >> Sir, please under arrest me or let me go. On April 28th, 2019, a 911 call comes in that will open a case with so many layers, contradictions, and questions that even years later, it barely makes sense. >> 911. Where's your emergency? >> Hello. 91 911. >> Yes. >> Where are you at? Where are you at? Do you have an address? >> Yes. Can you see me? >> 4562 drive. >> Is there an apartment? >> Yes, ma'am. Please. >> 154. >> Yes. My wife. >> What's going on? >> My wife. This is Guprit Singh, also known as Gary, an Indian origin man who will quickly become the central figure of this entire investigation. >> I'm sorry for >> what's going on. >> You say your wife. >> Sorry. >> I can't understand you. What's going on? I will send help, but I need to know what's going on. Can you say it again? >> Yes, my wife, my family. >> Your wife and >> your wife and your family are doing what? >> On the grounding. >> Your wife, >> how many people are down? >> My My wife, my dad, >> who? My wife, my dad, my mom, and my aunt. >> They're all down. >> Yes, please. >> What? Okay. What? What happened? What happened? Do you know what happened? Hello? Can you hear me? In many cases, we see dispatchers miss key details or misunderstand callers. But here, that isn't the problem. The dispatcher is really trying while Gary stops responding altogether. Instead of staying put and listening to the dispatcher, he starts knocking on neighbors doors while still on the line. Most people call 911 because they don't know what to do. Gary calls 911 and then starts doing everything except listening. >> Supposed to be at 45624. He only said his family was on the ground bleeding wasn't giving us a lot of information. There is a language barrier. >> And every neighbor whose door he knocks on makes a call of their own. >> Watch out for police and fire. >> Hi. There there was someone um banging on the door saying telling us to call the police. We live at um 4562 Winry Drive, apartment 155. They're just banging on a bunch of doors like screaming, "Please call the police. Please call the police. Please help me." >> Do you have any idea what's going on? >> No, we have no idea. We're He's like running around and like banging on doors and stuff. I don't know. We're just really freaked out except me and my friend and we don't really know what's going on, but he's just screaming to call the police. Okay, we've got everybody in route. >> 911. What's the address of your emergency? >> Uh, yes. Um, I live at Lakefront at Westchester Apartment. Uh, >> this >> and some guy is running around banging all all the doors saying >> Okay. Is it 4562? >> Yes. >> We've got everybody in route. Do you know what's going on? >> I don't. He just doesn't sound right. All right, got everybody in route. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. Bye-bye. >> By now, it's obvious this isn't a routine call. The uncertainty, the panic, the behavior, and the urgency in the caller's voice point to something far more serious. With too many unknowns and too much at stake, multiple units are dispatched immediately. 320. Have the caller meet us out front and wave us down if they can. >> What? >> What's the address again? >> What was the address again? This one. >> Saying someone's banging the doors. >> Okay. All right. Stay back here for me. Okay. >> All right. Officers approach cautiously because at this point anything could be happening inside. Meanwhile, Gary is still on the phone with the dispatcher, talking but not really making sense. >> Hello, please. Sir, >> can you tell me how, >> sir? Sir, >> no one's talking. No one's talking. >> Sir, how many people are down? How many people are down? >> Four. Four. Four. >> Are you say they're bleeding? >> Yes, they are. >> Okay. Is have Have they been shot? Have they been stabbed? >> I don't know. I love bleeding. They're bleeding so bad. >> Okay. But is does it look like they're bleeding from like a gunshot? Did somebody come in and shoot them? Why are they bleeding? >> They're bleeding, ma'am. >> Why are they bleeding? >> I don't know what it looks like. Somebody I don't know anybody. >> Can you go check to see if they're breathing? >> You say you killed them? >> No, they don't. >> Sir, did you do something to them? >> No, I just got home. Okay, >> Gary is well a lot. He talks in circles, ignores direction, and is probably wasting precious time here. And then somewhere in the noise, he lets something slip that will matter later. We got contact with an individual. >> Right now, officers don't know if Gary is the person asking for help or the person who caused it. With no clarity on roles, officers have to prepare for the worst. >> Sir, can you come out front? My officers are pulling up. Come out front. >> Go out front and meet the officer. Do you have any weapons? >> You don't have any weapons in your hand. >> Okay. All right. Go out and meet my officer. They're out front. Honey, go meet my officer out front, please. Okay. >> Walk out the front door and meet with my officer. Okay. >> Walk to the door. Tell me when you're with the officer. >> There's also a clear language barrier at play. Whether it's natural or being leaned into isn't something anyone can determine yet. >> 62 straight ahead. Let me see your hands. Let me see your hands. >> No, >> this guy in the car. >> LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. HANDS. ALL RIGHT. HANDS. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. >> HANDS. DOWN ON THE GROUND. DOWN on the ground. Down on the ground. >> Lay on your belly. your hand. >> Let me see your hand. >> Three Paul 20. We got >> contact with an individual outside of 4562. >> Down on the ground. Down on the ground. >> Lay on your belly. >> I'm going to step around him. >> My life. Please. My life. >> What happened? >> I don't know. Everybody bleeding. >> Is there anybody else in there except for your family? >> No. Hey Joe, >> come up high. >> Some officers move inside. The others stay out, securing Gary. What these officers don't know yet is the fact that this man is the caller, the survivor, maybe something far worse. >> Leave my life, please. >> I got cover. You handcuff Maronei. >> Handcuff him. >> Everybody's bleeding. >> Handcuff him. >> Is there anybody else in there except for your family? >> No. My everybody. You got coverage on him. Come up here and get lethal coverage on him. Thank you. >> My wife, my family, my family. >> Inside, officers are met with a horror scene beyond comprehension. Four bodies lie bleeding throughout the apartment. The four victims are 39year-old Shelinder Jet Kaw. Her parents 62-year-old Parmjet Kaw and 59year-old Hekat Singh Panang along with Gary's wife aunt 58-year-old Amijar Kh 20 got smoke coming from inside where we make an entry. >> Three ball 20. We have two uh individuals down. It's a significant amount of blood uh in the front living room and smoke smoke alarm going off. We're going to be going in. >> Each room reveals something worse. Celinder Jeet Carr is found in the kitchen shot three times in the hand. Her upper arm appears to be raised over her head which is an unmistakable defensive posture. Parmitkar had four gunshot wounds to the head with additional injuries to her finger and forearm. Amarjitkar was shot twice in the head and Hakat Singh Panang suffered the most gunshot wounds. He had been shot eight times. The violence was so severe that his eyes were blown out of the sockets. As officers take in the devastation inside, there's only one person outside who can explain how this happened. My wife is everywhere. >> You got coverage on him. Come up here. Leave your coverage on him. Thank you. >> My wife got smoke coming from inside. We making >> nobody making 31. Did you have traffic? >> How are you so bloody? >> How are you so bloody? >> I thought you were a letter. We have two uh individuals down blood in the front. >> How are you covered so much blood? I have my lap. She need to be the water. Clear. >> Okay, stay there. >> Yes. >> Gary's speech is slurred. It's hard to tell whether this is shock, confusion, or something else entirely. >> I'm not going. Please help them. >> We got you. We got you. >> Please help them. Please help them. >> Please help them, sir. Please. Please help them. >> Anybody here? >> Nobody there. I Nobody there. Please. >> You got any weapons on you? >> No, sir. I know. >> I don't I don't Please don't worry about me. Have my wife. I'm good. Have my wife. >> Please help my wife. >> You good here? >> Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. >> Does this blood from other people? >> Yeah, I had my wife on my my mom on my lap. I was trying to give them water. No one drink. >> Did you come home and you found them like this? >> Hey, please have that. >> You guys see anything or hear anything? >> Okay. >> Okay. >> If you guys want to clear out the upstairs, go ahead. Yeah, just just get down the get get down the street. Yeah. I don't know if there seems smoke coming out of there. >> I'm sorry. >> You cannot right now. Okay. >> Was there anybody else in the house? >> No, sir. >> How long you been home? >> I just got home. >> My wife was not breathing. >> Nobody breathing. >> What you're hearing is the smoke alarm inside. A pan filled with tea was left on the stove which burned dry, filling the apartment with smoke. We really tried but the alarm sound can't be removed from the footage. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I was trying to >> was your was your door open when you came? So you think someone forced in? >> Okay. >> My door open. I see my wife, my mom on the ground. I I look at >> Please help them. Please take another ambulance. >> Just let my wife >> my wife. Okay. >> Clear my camera. saw my wife. Please go check. >> I I don't know, man. >> Can I see you? >> Do you have ID on you? >> Please. >> Where's your ID at? >> In my pocket. >> Right here. >> Yeah. >> Just relax. Okay. Roll over on your back. >> See if we got a nearby. >> Lay back over on your side. >> Roll back over to your side. >> See my Sorry, this is very tight. >> I can't feel my arm. 20 have every offset available from down here. >> 51 free 61. Copy. >> Did you want to copy? >> Once you're finished there, respond to Winry. >> It's unusual to see the caller in handcuffs, isn't it? Gary is already restrained. Medics are requested still because at this point officers don't know yet if anyone inside can be saved. What's happening inside won't be changed by an ambulance. This isn't a rescue scene. It is very clearly a massacre. >> For now, when they come down, >> this is husband. He's covered in blood, but it's not his. He's fine. So, you got a fire in there. So, hold on. Hold on. Sir, please can I go? >> Let let the medics do what they're going to do. Okay. >> Is your >> I don't know. I haven't been inside your house. >> Can I sit down, please? Please sit me down. >> Yeah. Yeah. Want to sit up. Bring your knees up to your chest. Now roll over. Put your get your feet under you. Ready? He's fine. >> Yeah. >> You got more in the back. >> They're all inside the apartment there. >> Sorry. My my bike, my mom, my >> So, you just got home from work, right? >> Did you find the front door open? >> You did. Okay. And when you walked inside, what what did you what happened? What were was the first thing you saw? >> My My mom, >> my wife, >> my aunt. >> Were they all laying down? >> All on the ground. >> Laying on the floor? >> Yes. >> All bleeding. >> Were they Were they responding at all to you? >> I tried. >> They weren't breathing. >> No one speak. >> And then you called us right away. >> I called you. >> Okay. >> I call you. >> Did you kneel down and get blood on you? >> Okay. >> I took my wife. >> I took Give us a minute. Okay, >> let's bring a car up and get him in there. We'll get him out of >> backup keeps arriving. Whatever they've seen inside has changed the temperature of his call completely. With the house secured, attention shifts to the one person still breathing who might have answers. Gary is finally placed in the back of a patrol car. >> I can give >> I guess I could do that. What do you >> what name do you do your friends call you? >> Mr. Sing they call me Gary. >> Gary >> Gary, how long how long have you lived? >> Six years. >> Six years. Okay. What's your phone number, Gary? >> Where's my phone? >> Can I call my brother? >> What's your brother? Gary, call your brother. >> Brother's here. >> What are you doing? >> Uh, he's up there talking to another. >> Just stay here for a second. Hold on. We'll get him to you in a minute. Okay. >> Basically, I got to get information out of you to be able to help everybody involved. Okay. So, that's you're very, very important to me right now. Okay. And I'm not trying to be rude or anything like that, but the more info I get, the better I can do my job. Okay. So, do you know your phone number, Gary? >> Yes. >> Okay. What's your phone number, sir? >> He appears disconnected, slow, and unfocused. Whether it's adrenaline, intoxication, or performance is unclear. What it isn't, however, is shock or grief. >> Okay. >> What time did you leave today? >> Cuz it's my understanding you left and then came back. my left. >> Take your time. You don't remember? All right. All right. Was it daylight out or was it dark out? >> Daylight. Okay. Do you remember where you went? My truck. I go to my truck. Where's your truck at? Um, Mhouser. >> Okay. Are you a truck driver? Like a semi-truck driver? Yes. >> Okay. >> So, you went to your truck down on Mhouser. >> Where's it at on Mullhouser? Sugar Creek. Sugar Creek packaging. Gotcha. Gota. >> There are small mannerisms worth noticing here, like the delayed responses, the excessive hand movements, and the careful pauses before each sentence. >> What did you do down at your truck? >> Like about how long were you there? I don't know if anybody's okay. Like I said, I just got here. Okay. Who Who all lives with you, Gary? >> Who all lives in the building? >> My My father. >> Your father? What's What's father's name? >> He spells his first name. >> He repeatedly refers to them as my dad and my mom. But that isn't accurate. These are his wife's parents, and that distinction matters more than he wants it to. >> Okay. Who else lives here? >> My mom. >> Okay. And what's mom's name? >> My aunt. >> Okay. >> Sir. >> Yes, sir. >> Not right now, sir. It's okay. >> Okay. Please tell me if she's okay. >> Is your wife one of the people that's in here? >> My wife. >> My mom. Dad. >> Everybody inside's deceased. >> What is that? >> Dead. >> This is the moment he apparently realizes they're all dead for the first time. Except earlier on the call, he already acknowledged exactly that. It's the first clear contradiction in his story. >> That's why it's very, very important for you to hold together and help me out so we can figure out what happened tonight. Okay, Gary, need you to be strong for me. Gary. Okay. So, father, mom, aunt, and wife live here. >> Gary, what's your aunt's name? My aunt. Okay. >> Was your aunt in there? >> I I see her. >> She bleed. >> Yeah, she's she passed. She's deceased. >> She what? >> Deceased. Dead. >> What's her name? Gary. >> My Okay. All right. Hey Gary, just hang tight. Okay, we're going to take a break for a minute. We're going to get you back to our police department where it's more comfortable and get some info there. Okay. >> Your brother just showed up. >> You said my brother here, right? >> Mhm. >> Sir, please. He's going to be coming back. >> We're going to bring your brother. >> We're going to bring him back to the police department, too. >> Okay. Just hang tight for us. Just sit tight. >> Stay right here. >> It's an appropriate reaction, just not an authentic one. There's a difference between being stunned and trying to appear stunned. This leans towards the latter. With too many questions and no answers still, Gary is transported to the police station. Quick note, if you're enjoying how this case is being covered, consider subscribing. It helps support the channel and keeps more stories like this coming. Now, let's get back to what happens next. >> A drink, sir? Want some water? Anything? glass water. >> Yes, please. >> Sorry, guys. Please talk to my brother. >> Uh, not right now. I don't know where he is. Okay. So, detective will be able to tell you that here in a minute. So, you just want to have a seat and relax. We'll get you some water. >> Phones don't work right now. Okay. Can I call my kids? Not the moment. All right. Sir, can you call my kids and see if they're okay? >> Mhm. >> Please. Okay. >> Who has them right now? >> My >> your sister. >> Yes. >> Okay. What's your sister's name? >> Uh Harmon. >> Hardman. >> Yes. >> Okay. And what's your phone number? >> And my phone. Can I Can I get >> I don't have your phone. I don't remember her number. >> You know where she lives? >> Yeah. Remember that circle? >> Mhm. >> I told you she live over there by a circle, sir. >> Is her last name seen or something different? >> Um, car. >> Please spell that. >> K A U R. You need anything else? Let me know, sir. >> Sir, I can I please talk to my guys, please. >> We can't right now. They're taking the stop right now. Once you get ready, you guys stop. Gary and his wife have three children and none of them are home when the attack happens. That detail matters. When you look at who was inside the house and who was deliberately kept away, it becomes clear that some people were meant to be protected and others were not. Police confirm this through phone data. Gary's wife was making multiple calls trying to bring the children home from a relative who has no connection to the crime. Yet despite those efforts, the kids never returned. Investigators are left with a troubling question. What or who was keeping them away? >> Hello. How are you, >> sir? I'm >> How are you, >> sir? I am okay. >> I understand. >> I'm I'm totally okay. You please help my family. >> Yeah, we're helping. >> I know you've been through a lot, man. >> We're going to we're going to take our time. Okay. Just deep breaths. Just relax. >> Did you take them to the hospital for one minute? Maybe you save them. >> Okay. >> I I gave my blood my blood. >> I understand. What's your first name? What's your name? Sorry. I want >> Sorry, I gave my my name maybe four. >> Sure. But we're going to have a conversation. I'm Randy. This is This is Andrew. My name is God. >> Okay. >> You do you go by Gary? Somebody told me to go by Gary. I'm going to call you Gary. Is that okay? >> Yeah. My my company, my load of people go by Gary. >> Okay. You are you a truck driver? Yes. From what I've been told. >> Yes. >> Who do you drive for? >> I have my own 30. >> Oh, owner owner operator. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um when's the last time you were out on the road? >> Uh last week. >> Last week. I go every week. >> Every week? Yeah. You go across the road? >> No, I Yes, I go New Jersey. >> Okay. And where do you park your truck? >> Uh, Sugar Creek. >> Which which factor they have? I think they have three or four. >> The uh the one on Mhouser. >> The one right there by Bobcat down at the bottom. Okay. >> Okay. Well, >> sir, can you please call my kids? >> Call who? >> My kids. My babies, >> your kids. >> Yeah. >> I don't have I'm not We We're just going to hear. Okay. We Here's the thing. You call 911. Something Something bad happened. Okay. >> Yeah. They all bleeding. >> I understand. We need to know what happened. >> My my mom, my wife, all on the the ground bleeding. >> I understand. Let's Let's calm down for a minute, okay? And let's let's let's go back way before that. Okay. You with me? Sometimes it's easier when we talk about it if we start farther back in the day. Okay. >> Are you with me? >> Yes. >> You understand, Gary? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Tell me, where did you wake up this morning? >> There's a lot of nervous energy here. It could be adrenaline. It could be panic. In fairness, there are innocent explanations for this kind of behavior. At least in theory. >> Home. Home. It's easier if we start in small chunks. >> Okay. In the in the same apartment. >> Yes. Okay. Okay. And what time did you wake up, Gary? >> I know it's hard. We have We have We have plenty of time. Okay. >> I don't remember. >> You don't remember? I I >> I don't remember. >> You don't remember what time you go? >> Like maybe maybe 9:00. I sleep late. >> Okay. You sleep late? Do you Okay. So when on a normal day like today, was today a normal day? Okay. When you woke up at 9:00, what what did you do next? I I I I was home. Do nothing. >> Okay. >> He says, "I did nothing." Which is interesting because nothing seems to involve a lot of movement, a lot of decisions, and a whole lot of planning. Unfortunately for him, nothing leaves fewer fingerprints than this. >> Who else was hanging out at that was hanging out at that time? Uh, >> everybody. I uh my mom and my aunt. Yes. They they go to work. >> They went to work. >> Yeah. >> Where do they work at, Gary? >> Uh some some factory where they uh fold uh the towels. >> Okay. So, they went to work to fold towels, right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. And you hung out. Who Who else was there? Uh uh me, my wife, my kids. Uh my dad. No, my uh my dad. Uh [sighs] yeah, he my dad was home but not home. See, he come and go. Yeah, my dad come and go a couple times. >> Yeah. Is he just running errands kind of kind of thing or is he working? >> Uh Sunday my uh yesterday. >> Okay. >> Gary's accent is thick at times, especially when clarity would be inconvenient. What's noticeable is how much clearer his speech becomes when he wants to be understood. What's noticeable is how much clearer he sounds now compared to the 911 call. And this trend is going to continue. But the accent isn't the real focus here. The real question is still the same. Where were the kids and why? >> Um, okay. I Oh, my kids go with my sister. Uh, yes. My Yes. When I my kids go to go with my sister uh for uh Indian food for Indian restaurant. >> Oh, so your your sister picked them up. >> Yeah, she Yes. >> to take him to an Indian restaurant. >> Yes. >> Okay. And what time? >> Uh that because on the weekend uh my kids uh they say uh no home cook, no home food, uh restaurant food. Okay. So, and I uh I go to truck uh fix my truck. >> Okay. So, so your So, is it your sister that picks up your kids? Is it their aunt? >> No, my sister. >> Your sister. Okay. Your sister picks up the kids and takes them to a restaurant. Yeah, she she she she is my uh Yeah, she pick up my kids take to the she she do that all the time. >> Okay. >> Because my my kids like my kids like her. >> Okay. >> Yeah. And she she she do that. Uh and uh uh I go to truck and I uh my truck and um I come back I go take your time. Take your time. Take your time. >> All right. Come back. >> He's communicating more through hand movements than actual sentences. It's expressive. Maybe too expressive. >> Well, we we have to figure out what took place when you call 911. It's very important to us to help us out. I I >> I come back. I see my mom. Yes. I see my mom and I see my wife and I see my aunt. I see the they the bleed and they they're on the ground. And I am just running to try to shake them, try to see. And I go inside my dad. I stick them. He bleeds and no one talk. And then I I call I I call and I call and I try to I try to give them water. I call and uh you come. No. No. One officer come. Uh yeah. One officer come and he [sighs] [panting] Yeah. He asked me uh he he Yeah. He asked me if uh no he no the the officer come. I tell them come. Did you call 911? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah, I called 911. But sir, can you can you please tell me what happened and why all this? Well, I I don't know what happened. That's what we're trying to we're trying to find out from you. What you saw, what you did today, where people were. Just trying to get an idea. Yeah sir, I I have the back problem, >> right? >> My uh I don't know maybe bad muscle p or something but >> Are you taking any medication or anything for that? >> No, >> no, only cuz if I take my medication uh I get a really bad diarrhea. >> Oh, okay. Oh, >> sir, can I talk to him, please? >> Well, right now we need to talk to you. It's very >> I just need to ask him if my kids are okay. That's all. >> We can find out if if if people have checked on your kids. Can you please go ahead and check I'll check on right, >> please. >> Okay, Gary. And I know you've been through a lot, man. I understand. It's to It's >> Please help me. >> I'm trying. >> Please help my family. I'll try it. >> He asks what happened again and again and again despite already being told the answer. This is one of those moments where overacting earns negative points. >> Uh when I when I go inside uh my when I go inside my my mom uh my wife and my uh aunt Uh, and I go call them like, "Mommy, mommy, masi, masi, bolo, uh, I they they're all bleeding." >> Okay. And uh I thought uh maybe first when I see my mom uh I uh I thought she fell on the ground and hit the hit the head. >> So you saw your mom first? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And uh then I see my wife. Uh when I walk, I see my wife and uh I see my aunt right here >> in the same room. >> Yes. My wife right here uh and uh by the kitchen. >> And and what did you see on your on your wife? >> All bleeding. >> Okay. >> All bleeding. Then I uh then I go uh I I go everybody. Yeah, go everybody. And I see my dad. He's in the bed. And uh yeah, he's bleeding too. >> Okay. >> And I call 911. And I call 911. And uh uh then I'm going to everyone. Maybe somebody talking. Maybe someone tell me what happened. No one talking. What you may not fully understand yet is that this story doesn't begin tonight. There's a financial thread running through this case and it leads straight to an affair. Gary was having an affair with a woman named Navikrron Cower. In March of 2019, Shander Lejit opened a bank statement, found a $20,000 check made out to her. This wasn't a stranger. Shander Lejit knew exactly who Navacron was. Naviran was living in Indiana, coming out of an abusive marriage and an ugly divorce. Her ex-husband had sold their house to a cousin for a single dollar, leaving her without a home. She needed money to buy it back. And at some point, Gary decided that it was his problem to solve. >> How long do you think you were gone from? >> What time do you think you left the apartment to go fix your uh Was it still light outside? >> Yes. Yes. Blinds were closed. Yes. >> Okay. So, when you get to the front door, door is wide open. >> Yes. I >> Is it >> Do you remember? >> I >> There's anything odd about it? >> I don't because as soon as I see the door, I see my mom. Okay. >> And I go right. I was like, "Mom, what's wrong?" And um then I step inside uh and then I see my wife over there and then I see my aunt and then like I told you sir uh I just I don't remember a whole lot after that. I just like when I see them bleeding and on the ground I my brain stop working. >> Okay. All right. Um, do you need anything right now? >> No, I'm good. >> Um, I'm drinking water. >> I'm going to step out for a second. Okay. >> Yes. >> You need anything? You let us know. We'll get it for you. Okay. Okay. >> We're just trying to put things together. >> Can I please talk to uh kind of my my kids, please? And my sister. >> Yes. >> Right now, we're just trying to figure out what I understand that. >> Okay. My kids are very little. I know. And I don't want to traumatize them any more than than we have to right now. Okay. I need your mind focused for me. All right. It's very very important. Do you understand, >> sir? I do whatever you tell me. >> I understand. And I just need you to stay with me, man. Okay. Your kids are okay. We checked on them. I just I don't want to cloud your mind, okay? Cuz I need you. All right. You're very important to me. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Cuz we want to find out what happened. >> Yes, sir. Please hide. We do bad. >> I >> And you're the only guy we have right now that can tell me anything. So, we want to keep picking your brain a little bit. Okay. >> And I know you It's hard when you've seen a lot of stuff like you've seen. Okay. I can't I can't even imagine. Okay. So, just take some time, drink some water, and I'll be back with All right. The detectives step out of the interrogation room to verify what he's telling them. And what they find is unsettling. Cell phone records and GPS data from Gary's car place him at the apartment at exactly 9:11 p.m. He stays there for 30 minutes, and only then does he call 911. >> Okay, here's what we're going to do. Okay, >> please find out what happened. >> Yeah, I I'll tell you what happened. >> What happened? >> Okay. You're Somebody Somebody killed your family. >> Yes, but why? >> I don't know. That's why I need your help, >> sir. I >> who who would who would want to kill your family? >> I don't I [sighs] I don't think anybody. I I don't know why. >> I know you but somebody did. >> So we need we need me and you we need to figure out who who it could have been. >> That's what I'm trying to understand. Sir, I since the day I come in US, I work no drugs, no nothing. only work but uh I work in factory gas station I drive truck nothing wrong nothing never maybe one or two speeding tickets that's it I don't know >> okay >> I don't know >> well who who has a does anybody have any any problems with your your mom or your dad or your aunt or your wife. Is there any kind of >> No, we we uh No, we we live here. I remember we live here in a apartment 2012. Never talked to anybody even in a uh in a high voice. No, never. And uh never no fight, no uh no argument, nothing. This wasn't about rage or a sudden loss of control. This was about an affair, financial gain, and a cold calculation. Gary believed that once his in-laws were gone, the money would follow. His parents-in-law were expecting close to a million dollars from selling land in India. So apparently this wasn't a crime of passion. It was the crime of accounting. >> Okay. So, so is does your family >> My family What happened to them? >> It looks like somebody killed him. >> But why why I I don't know. That's why I need your help. That's why I'm walking through you this timeline with me so we can figure out where you were, who maybe who maybe has a problem with you or or your or your dad or your mom or your aunt or, you know, business partners to somebody to church. No, >> ex-boyfriend. Help me. >> But we don't have any business. Only truck. My dad work in factory. My mom work in a factory. My wife home with kids all the time. No business, no nothing. >> Once again, he asks the same question. Gary asks to speak to his children 36 times throughout the interrogation. At that point, it stops sounding like concern and starts sounding like a script he can't move past. >> Hey, Gary, did you have shoes? >> My um my shoes at home. >> Okay. Where where did you take your shoes off at? >> My uh my shoe came off when I was uh when I was going. Your shoes came off when you were going. >> I I do only really loose shoes. I don't >> Okay. What What kind of shoes were you wearing? >> Uh my truck shoes. >> Okay. Describe your truck shoes that you were wearing. >> Uh they are uh uh leather. I only wear them. I only have one pair trucks I wear all time. >> Okay. >> And I have other one, the red ones for my Baliwa. That's it. >> Okay. So, your truck your leather truck shoes, are they boots? Uh uh. What? What do you mean boots? >> Do they have high tops? Like I have boots on right now. These are boots. >> Uh not this high. >> No. Are there So are they shoes? >> Yeah, maybe this high. >> Maybe this high. >> Do they have laces like my shoes? >> Yes, they do. >> Okay. >> And you have them tied? >> No, I never do. I just uh have them always have so I can just pull them off and just slide them in. >> Okay. And you're saying that sometime when you were running around with your family members, they fell off. >> Yeah, they came off. >> There's another detail that doesn't fit. Gary isn't wearing his shoes, but the investigators could see bloody shoe prints inside the house. >> Did you see anything laying? Okay. >> No one will come out. >> You know, was there a knife? Was there a gun laying there? Was there any bullets? Or was there any shell casings? Did you see anything like that? >> Uh, no. I don't see anything. I I wasn't I was blind deaf. >> Okay. >> Nothing worked in my head. >> Okay, Gary. And I understand who would do this, Gary. >> Sir, I I don't help me. >> I as soon as I know any clue, you will be the first person to know cuz I'm so mad. >> Okay. How was your relationship with your folks? >> With your mom? >> Just fine. >> Good. >> Yes. We lived together since I got here in USA and nothing went wrong. No problem whatsoever. >> Okay. >> Yes. >> Do you guys ever argue or fight more than normal? >> Not at all. Not even normal argument. Not at all. They I don't remember every single day of my life but I know there was never anything argue you can get into argument category >> okay >> because if if anything if anything ever even happens or happened I would just walk outside I won't argue with them. >> Okay. >> They're they're my mom and dad. >> Yeah. What about your wife? How's your relationship with her? >> Fine. I we have three kids. >> How long you been married? >> Uh uh 2002. >> 2002. >> Yes. Long time. >> Have you ever separated for any reason? >> No. Never. Never. Always together. I always uh she is a really good mom. She told me uh that she wanted to work. I said, "No, you stay home. I make money. You stay home. You take care of kids and family. You don't go to work. And she had no problem with kids or anybody else. >> Okay. Is anybody including yourself, including yourself, have a drug problem? >> No sir. >> Marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine. >> Sir, I am 37 years old. >> I have never touched alcohol, tobacco. The hardest drink I drink is tea, coffee. >> You don't drink alcohol at all? >> No. >> No alcohol. No marijuana, no nothing. >> Okay. Is there anybody in your family who has an ongoing feud with an exboyfriend or a girlfriend or ex-husband or >> No, been 15 years my life. I mean my my and my my married life uh mom and dad were married for over 40 years more than 40. IPS I know they they are uh I think 1970 something when they were married. No problem at all. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> On the surface Gary and his wife appeared to be a stable family unit. But behind that surface the relationship was deeply strained. The marriage was fractured by infidelity, secrecy and money. Has your and this is but I'm going to Has your wife ever been unfaithful to you? >> Always faithful. No problem. >> Okay. Have you ever been unfaithful to your wife? >> Always faithful. Never problem. >> Has your mom and your dad always been faithful? >> Never problem. It it sir I sorry to interrupt you. It doesn't happen in Punjabi culture. >> Okay. >> Yes. But it if it does then it won't be cheating. It'll be complete separation. It won't be like wife or husband is are cheating but still living together. No, if they're together together otherwise they're gone. >> Okay. >> It's an interesting belief especially coming from the person who lived the exception. >> But who did this? That's what I'm trying to understand. Who would do this? Mhm. And why, you know? Why couldn't why couldn't that person just come and talk to me you know like hey you're doing or your family is doing this wrong to me or us >> stop right I would have said sorry in heartbeat I would have changed the way I Okay. The place I live, the work I do, >> but not this. It's not this is not the right way. >> Right. >> Absolutely. >> This man is lecturing the room while sitting on a mountain of guilt. He looks less like a man in crisis and more like someone waiting for his story to be accepted. >> First off, >> you don't own any guns. I'm not accusing anything, but you don't own any guns, do you? >> Yes, I do. >> You do? What do you want? >> Uh, it's a uh Beretta. >> Beretta? What kind of Beretta? >> Uh, I can uh I can give it to you. >> Where is it? >> At home. >> It's in your house? >> Yes. >> Okay. Where is it at in your house? >> Uh, you you go in a clos uh you go into my bedroom all the way. >> Okay. >> Go to closet. Uh it's in the closet in the in into the corner. >> In the closet in the corner. box or is it just sitting there? >> It's It's in a box. >> Okay. It's in a box. >> It's in a uh It's in a Okay. It's a small bag. Uh and it's in a box and the box is in a bag. >> Okay. Where did you buy the gun from? >> Uh I bought it from uh uh he's a family friend. >> So, how long ago? How long have you had the gun? >> Um couple few years. I would say 3 four years. How often do you shoot it? >> Not often. Not often. A matter of fact, it's been it's been uh >> Yeah, not often. It's It's right there. >> I know. >> Yeah. >> How many How many When's the last time you shot it? >> Uh I I don't remember. >> You don't remember? It's been that long. >> So, it's been Has it been a year? >> I Yes, I would say. And where did you shoot it last? You remember? >> Um that was the uh uh what's it called? Target World. >> Target World? >> Yes. >> That's the last time you shot it was Target World. >> Yeah. And and matter of fact uh it's uh um how you say that? Like uh it's it's in the box and >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> What caliber is it? >> 9 mm. >> 9 millm. is okay. >> He says the gun was at home. That statement ages poorly. In less than 48 hours, police recover the murder weapon from the lake directly behind the apartment with the serial number pried off. >> So, you've only bought one gun in your entire life, and you don't even really need it. That's what you're saying. >> Yeah. >> Okay. That being said, okay, here's what I need to do. Okay. Since you um were in a in a scene where somebody was shot, okay, multiple people were shot and killed. Okay. Um, I need your help. >> Did you say they were shot? >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's what we believe at this point. Okay. Who would do that? >> But no, no one told me. Uh, >> I'm telling you right now, >> they were shot. >> That's what we believe. I don't know that 100%, but that's what we believe at this point. >> Did someone go that bad? >> I don't know. I wasn't there. That's why I'm trying to get you to help me figure out who did this. Okay. >> So, what I'm going to do, okay, is I I'm going to This is called a gunshot residue kit. Okay. Okay. But I can't do >> What is it? >> It's a gunshot residue kit. I'm going to I'm going to fill it out, okay? And I'm going to take some swabs of your hands. Make sure you haven't been shooting guns just to rule you out. Okay. It's just what we do to everybody. >> Okay. >> Okay. But Okay. Someone's shot. Yeah, that's what we think. Yes. Okay. Do you understand? All right. And um again, so Okay. What is this again? >> Okay. Two things. First, I'm going to check you real quick. Okay. Not that I think you got a gun on you, but my bosses are watching. All right. And I'm going to make sure you don't have anything on you. Is that cool with you? >> He checked already. >> I'm gonna do it again. Are you cool with that? Is that okay? >> Okay. I'm not I'm cool with it, but Okay. I mean, he checked me, but you want to check me? >> Yeah, I do. Is that okay? >> That's fine. >> Okay. And then we'll fill this form out and we'll explain it to you. Okay. >> This is the moment he's going to start freaking out for real. This is the first time he's reacting instead of performing. Okay. My shot. I I don't know. That's why I'm I'm trying to pick your brain. I need you to help me. Who would do this? You know, somebody would have done it. Somebody did it. Okay. Says who made identification as a law enforcement officer of the West Police Department. Constitutional right not to have a search made of the premises or property owned by me and or under my care custody. Okay. [sighs] >> You all right? Oh. I want to go home. I want to go home. Be like, maybe they're in danger. I want to go home right now. >> Hey, have a seat for me. Okay. >> No. No. We're We're going to talk some more. Okay. Listen to me. And the only reason I have to read these to do you understand these rights? >> Yes, I do. >> Do you wish to talk to us without a lawyer present? >> No. >> You want you want a lawyer? >> I I don't want to talk. I want to go to my kids. Someone shot my family. My kids are alone. I am sudden stupid here. [clears throat] >> Okay. I need you to put your name. >> Put your name right here. Just I read it to you. Okay. >> So, this means I I I go to my kids. >> No, you're going to sit here for a minute. >> No, I want to go to my kids. >> You got to sit here for a minute. >> No. >> Okay. >> No, I want to go to my kids. I'll be back. >> I I told you. I said everything. No one told me that they were shot. You telling me now and shooters out there? Oh my god, [sighs] this is wrong. This is wrong. And no one told me that this is happen. Everyone was saying like something happened. Really, man? [sighs] I press I trust police and police tell me this. No, I want I want to go to my kids. Why? >> No, I want my lawyer. I don't want >> Okay, then have a seat. >> I don't want to do anything with you. >> Understand? Then sit down. >> Why? No, I don't want to sit down. >> You have to sit down. >> Why? >> Cuz I asked you to. >> What did I do wrong, >> sir? Please. >> I'm just >> understand. Listen. No. >> Listen to me. >> No. >> Gary, listen to me. You're not free to go. >> You have to have a seat. >> Why not? I am free to go. Why did I I'm getting a search warrant for >> Okay. >> You You're not free to go. >> Why not? You're being sent here by us. >> Why not? >> For questioning still. >> You You were questioning me. You have been asking me questions for last >> I understand. I understand. And and in the moment you said you didn't want to talk to us anymore. Without a lawyer, we can't question you anymore. >> Yes. Don't question me. >> We're not. But we have the right to hold you here to get search warrant for your hands. >> No. >> Yes, we do. >> Okay. I I'm not doing anything. You You get search warrant. >> Have a seat, Gary. Sir, did you leave? >> Someone shot my family. >> Okay, have a seat. I look, I've been doing everything you wanted me to do. >> I know you have and I appreciate it. >> But right now, you have to let me do what I want to do and what I have to do. >> I have been doing what you want to do. You can't leave. >> Why not? >> Because you're being here. >> For what? any other units on station. >> The moment detectives mentioned gunshot residue testing, he suddenly wants to go home. The timing couldn't be more honest if it tried. >> Please understand. >> I am not I am not going you send your officer with me in your car. >> It's not going to happen. Why not? >> We have to get the gunshot res. Okay. And we need you here. We need I'm not doing anything without my >> Okay. Have a seat. >> There's a phone book right there. >> This is wrong. This is very wrong. >> Okay. There's a phone book right there. If you want to call your >> I call in the morning. >> Okay. >> I call in the morning. I don't have any any of my number. >> I don't want to be in here. I don't want to do anything with that. >> All right, sit. >> You know, I I got to use your uh I got to use the bathroom and you're treating me like I am the criminal. >> I don't I'm not treating you like >> I'm a father. >> I understand. >> I am a husband and son. >> I I understand. >> You are you I >> G. What would you do if this happened to you? >> I would sit here and cooperate with Yeah. >> Really? Cooperate with me? >> I would. >> Let me go see my >> You can't leave. >> Why not? Not. >> Cuz we're getting a search warrant. >> What? What did wrong? >> I'm not saying you did anything wrong. >> That's why That's why I'm saying >> you're But you're the first guy to show up where four people have been murdered. >> Is that my fault? >> No. >> That's what I'm saying. >> No, but we have certain evidence we need to get if it exists. I'm not saying it's even there. Look, I don't understand your police language. I just All I want to do is be with my kids. >> I can't ask you any more questions. >> Look, I'm I'm covered in blood. >> I understand. >> You You think this is so easy for me? >> This is my family's blood. >> I think it's horrible. >> But you're not doing anything about it. >> You're You're doing to me like >> We have an We have an entire police department. >> You have to let me see my brother. Send him in. >> We're not going to let you see your brother. >> Why not? >> Because we're not. That's not how police work is is it's not how it works. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, since you don't want to give us consent, which is fine. That's your right. We have to get a search warrant and stay here until we do that. >> Oh, God. >> Okay. >> Okay. Am I under arrest? >> You're being detained. >> Am I under arrest? >> You're being detained. >> What does that mean? >> That means you can't leave until we get a search warrant. >> Why not? What's my fault? >> There's evidence, potential evidence on your hands that I don't know. >> I have been sitting here all day. Get your potential. All right. No. Sit down. >> No. >> Here. You're not leaving. >> Please. >> Don't touch me. >> What did I do wrong? >> Why would I stay here? >> I I understand that, but there's no arguing any about it. You're going to stay here and that's final. That's it. >> Okay. Arrest me. >> We get arrested. >> You're under detain. You're >> No. No. There. No. I don't understand. Detain or whatever. >> Back into the room. >> You arrest me back into the room. You need to get back into this room. >> Look, you you he told me now that my family was shot. I thought it was an accident. >> You thought what was an accident? >> Four people died and you thought >> Yes. I I wasn't told anything. >> Come on, >> sir. Please under arrest me or let me go. >> You're detained. >> You arrest me or let me go. >> You're detained. Come on in. >> I don't I don't know what detain is. That means you're not allowed to leave. >> Five guys are doing this to me. >> See, look. Do you want to sit with your hands free, which I would prefer? >> I will come back, sir. >> Thank you. I don't >> I got to see my Let me go. >> Come on. Let's have a seat. >> Please let No. >> No. You Why don't you just arrest me then? >> Just have a seat. >> Why not? Why not? Let me go. >> Sir, sir, you're in full uniform. Everything. Please take me in your car. Then I come back with you. >> What kind of What kind of law is it? I mean, Look how you guys are getting in a position like I am some threat to you, right? >> No, but you can't leave. You're not allowed to leave. >> Why? >> Because we're getting a search warrant for evidence that is on you. >> Okay. Search. Do what you got to do. >> It takes time. A judge has to sign it. >> Okay. Get signed and call back. >> You're not leaving. You can't leave. >> Why not? >> Because we have to maintain the integrity of any potential evidence that could be on you. >> Okay. I'm not giving you anything unless I have my lawyer. That is that clear? >> Understand? FC. >> That's it. >> FC. >> Yes. >> What he did was so violent that at the funeral, the bodies of the four people he killed were barely recognizable. >> Arrest me or either let me go. PD department Paul's department. Westchester. for And Daddy please. Manuel Mahav foreign. Oh shoot. Gary had been at the police station from about 10:00 p.m. until nearly 6 a.m. the next morning. On paper, that sounds like a long night. But compared to the scene waiting back at his apartment, time almost becomes irrelevant. Inside that home was a massacre. Four people all shot in the head. 16 bullets recovered from their bodies. Whatever happened there was clearly deliberate, repetitive, and devastating. >> Okay. What am I supposed to do now? We're just letting you know we're going to we're going to do this, >> but the judge authorizes us to do it. >> Don't I call my uh lawyer first? >> You've had call your lawyer. >> Yeah, he's on his way. >> We're still going to serve the search warrant. >> Okay, that's fine. But I I got to wait for him, right? >> You can. >> No, he's not going to wait for this. We're going to do this now. All right, >> do it. >> Do it. Okay. So, what does it say? Half of it. You can help him out with that. >> What's that, sir? >> What does it say? I don't understand half of it. >> So, this is a search warrant. Okay. It authorizes us to search for and collect the items that are listed here, okay? which are >> DNA obtained through cheek swab, which we're going to do a little later, gunshot residue testing, which we're doing now, >> your clothing, which we're in the process of getting you some replacement clothing. Okay. Um, your phone or any other communication devices. We're going to visually inspect and photograph your skin and the blood that's on you, as well as swab that as well. Okay. And we're also going to check you um for defensive wounds and potentially swab underneath your fingernails. Okay. And or collect fingernails at clippings if we need to. >> So that's all you're going to get from me >> at this time. That's all that's authorized in this warrant. >> That's like that. All those things you're going to get from me? >> Yes. In this warrant, that's what this authorizes. >> Okay. So I don't I don't get to uh get my lawyer or anything. >> So >> understand that some of the stuff is timesensitive. >> I I understand but please understand me too. I see where it's going. Right. I see I am being treated as a if I have done it right. while whoever has done it is out there getting away from you guys. >> You know what I mean? >> Okay. Well, >> so the where is my right or anything? >> Probably nowhere, right? You guys are doing what you >> That's not the case. You definitely obviously have rights and that's why we got to search for it. We asked for consent first. She didn't want to do that, which is absolutely your right and that was not anything that factored into probable cause to issue the warrant because exerting your rights is not something that we would take in consideration. However, as we progress through this, this is time-sensitive evidence that needs to be collected. We're going to do that. That's why we obtain the search warrant. Okay. >> What do you mean by at this point? I don't understand >> the information I to my knowledge right now. We're going to serve this search warrant. >> Okay. >> Okay. That's what I have. After that, I have to talk to to my bosses. Okay. >> Mhm. >> All right. >> Now, I got to use your bathroom real quick. >> Well, we got we have to do this first. Yeah. Can't do that. >> See, I just wanted to just want to do this how you react cuz you're thinking that I'm just going to wash my hands away, right? I need your right hand. >> [clears throat] >> Finally, when the gunshot residue test comes back positive, it confirms his contact with a recently fired weapon. The defense, however, offers an alternative explanation that he was moving the victims, shaking them, trying to help. It's an argument. Whether it's a convincing one IS ANOTHER MATTER. >> COME, COME [screaming] IN. >> On July 2nd, 2019, Gaprit is finally arrested. Not hiding, not fleeing the country, but shopping at a Walmart in Bradford, Connecticut, where he had traveled to attend a family wedding. The contrast is jarring. He spends a month in a New Haven jail before being extradited back to Ohio where he was held at the Butler County Jail. But even after his arrest, the story doesn't settle. During trial, Gary introduces alternative suspects, suggesting members of a so-called land mafia in India, claiming they're wanted by the FBI and Interpol. It's a sweeping allegation and a convenient one. But the defense advances an even more dramatic version. Three masked men armed with baseball bats break into the apartment. Gary runs out. When he returns, everyone is dead because four adults were killed in separate rooms with two exits. They argue this must have been the work of multiple attackers. Ultimately, the charges are straightforward. Four counts of aggravated murder, one for each victim. In 2022, his first trial ends in a hung jury. In 2024, Gary waves his right to a jury. Instead, he places his fate in the hands of a three judge panel in Butler County common please court. All three judges unanimously find him guilty on all counts. The sentence is as severe as Ohio law allows. Gaprit Singh is sentenced to death on all four counts of aggravated murder. His execution date was set for November 27th, 2024. He then filed a motion with the Ohio Supreme Court seeking a stay of execution while his appeal is considered. That motion and others put the sentence on pause. And even beyond the appeals, Ohio has effectively halted executions since 2020 due to ongoing problems obtaining lethal injection drugs.
