interview of a man who was forced to watch as his childhood friend was murdered Peter tornay had been friends with Hoyt Burge since they were young boys they continued to hang out together throughout adulthood and when Burge asked tornay to go with him to Paige vowell's home to buy prescription drugs he didn't think anything of it when they arrived they were ambushed by Paige Briggs Patrick Bahrain David Howard and Stanley West Paige Briggs was also known to sell meth and marijuana out of the same house tornay submitted immediately while Burge fought back as he was pummeled and then shot during the fight Annex set in and there was a scramble to clean the scene and figure out what to do with Burgess body and tornee of whom the four men are charged with kidnapping and carjacking after Burge was shot his body was wrapped in plastic and put in the trunk of tornay's Mother's car which was found parked at the u-club apartment complex on Woodward Avenue rain and another suspect drove the Toyota Camry to several locations taking tornay to his mother's house where they told him to get money and come back it was then tornay ran inside and alerted the Leon County Sheriff's Office to the shooting hours later detectives found the car under a cover which bahraine said he'd purchased after Burge was killed they noticed blood on the rear bumper of the car and forced the trunk open the one that was the one that um boy doesn't have a bar so I know who was in it Jimmy Jimmy is because that's what they kept telling calling him Jimmy hey Jimmy hey Jimmy you know Jimmy was driving or where Jimmy was sitting Jimmy was driving you know do you know Jimmy's last name I have no idea do you know where he lives I mean I've never seen him does he water block he's white how old did he look Ed about my age I'm saying how old are you 33 you down there he's always my age too we're singing or something so does Jimmy and Hoy anyone else with them no one else just them two yeah okay so he said to me and Jimmy and Hoyt ornay doesn't know all of the people involved very well for many of them drugs are their only connection and they don't interact often or at all outside of that experience pulled up was just me and Dee and Hoy pulls up he was like Jimmy and the black guy he was a black guy I don't know I never seen him okay no he's on the Jimmy James because I kept like I said I kept hearing saying Jimmy we're getting you know Jimmy what what were they saying I don't know if I remember exactly what they were saying I just remember them you know Jimmy I don't know what we're gonna do you know or something I just I don't I just remember them saying Jimmy you know and he was responding so what happened I felt all you guys got there what wanted to go and go inside and I was like well can my can my friend D come you know I just you know I'm in an unfamiliar area that I'm not usually a good child I'm out of my zone because I don't usually just I don't do things but Soy you know I'm done for a long time um I don't think no nothing okay so who did you go inside the house yeah who went inside me and uh what were the only ones that went inside what about Jimmy and the black guy Jimmy the black guy never went inside do they stay outside do they ever get out of the car the Explorer I want to say if they did not when I see them I mean okay because I mean they ended up they ended up leaving like the the house because I remember they were there I got there and then I came yeah they said they were they weren't they weren't even there okay so when you and Hoyt went inside what did you see when you first walked inside I first walked in and seen a female striped it like a bluish like a blouse type shirt Stripes was like blue like dark blue was she water black she was white do you know who she was as they were talking I was like I had to be Josh or no Pages girlfriend was anyone else with her there's another girl in there too I just don't remember I've never seen her before was she water black she's a white girl what did she look like because he was just like you know like it was like she just look out of place like you know she was just like oh I'm girlfriend telling the other girl like man you got you know poop on your on your shoe or on your foot or something because she had sandals and there was no socks or anything I guess someone stepped in some poop or something and you can see like it was water and then you just gonna smell a little bit so yeah what else you guys talk about if they didn't have any conversation with just how long were you in there the actual in the hole in the house from the tower step to end to the time is that your house well what happened what what ended up happening with the girls or what happened after you got inside the house when I walked into the house I walked in girl you know Jimmy and like they weren't they weren't hearing me inside a nurse it was just I walked in I mean I think I was already in my life she said it's behind and uh I but I seen I didn't recognize as a female um I was a female was just thinking of the striped blue as a female and uh and after that I don't think nothing of it hello okay um let's let's build a bunch of you guys rushed out of the back room the officer still doesn't seem to understand that this wasn't a typical social event Small Talk was not a requirement it might not have happened at all and if it did could very easily be forgotten once everyone was sober tornay wasn't there to get to know people so it makes sense that he wouldn't know people how they were all connected or how everyone interacted around him do you know how many how many is a few one there's one line and one two one two lesson five more than two less than five I just I'm shock of seeing it I think there's no way this is better than what you want what do they when they rushed out what happened oh wait the entire point do they say anything to you there was a pages and everything to me to you or let's back up so Paige is one of the guys that rushed out is that correct yeah yeah you had to because no one came to the front and the hotel came from the bedroom there okay so did you recognize anyone else that came from the back that rushed out I personally didn't recognize anybody so like after a while I didn't recognize they got what other guys that was there his name was his name was Patrick Patrick I don't know his last name but I know that we his name was Patrick because when we uh uh uh um bridge and um we were on the same dorms the same pod together what pod was that me Patrick and uh can you remember what pod you guys were in pee it was the kitchen pod kitchen a kitchen trusty we're all kitchen trustees we all stuff in the same section okay when we when were you in jail this is um piece of power in there yeah the kitchen probably I want to say it's po no I'm saying when when were you there what were you what were you in jail for when you were when you were there you remember what you got arrested for I know I'm in the prison for it you want a prison for it yeah so this isn't something like 2017 arrests this is Maybe a couple years ago 15 2015. you want to see I was a life in 2008 October to uh until April all right so you page and Patrick were in jail from about November 2014 to April 2015. and that's you guys have been together at some point all right did you recognize anyone else that rushed out besides Paige and Patrick don't know anybody else did anybody say anything when they rushed out remember hearing any any statements being made not really it's all jeopardizing me then I mean man but you know what's going on dude I was still and when you said since you don't remember what Paige said to you yeah the only thing he was saying to me was get the [ __ ] down get the [ __ ] down stay on the [ __ ] ground if you [ __ ] move I'll [ __ ] shoot you did you get down on the ground yeah kill that [ __ ] is Big it's a big that's a big there's a big deal for big guns I'm scared did anybody attack you yeah I mean after they basically got white but how did they attack boys [Music] um no Page hit me in the head because he was the one that with the gun over me you got it 20 Pages you with you see you didn't you you need an ambulance come check you out I told him I was okay all right you don't want to get checked up I could feel it Russian dog you feel the blood like when he said he just did one quick what kind of gun was it that is long barrels there's a long barrel Gun there's a shotgun I'm saying I don't know I'm not really familiar with guns I don't mess with guns man that's just scary okay so how did this all end what happened oh my last breath I don't know those type of people a lot of the why did they stop attacking you think he hit me a few times because I I my best bet was to earn their trust and get on their side that was my best bet oh you're going to die because I was the only one there besides really so what happened to Holy no okay I told the officers same thing happened walked in I was like dang white man you got me way out here man I said what are you doing and boom I mean within a few seconds to rushed out of the bag and they're just attacking my knees and sock too he said what the [ __ ] but I mean has everybody talked out there you know even afterwards I mean the whole reason the neighbors even standing during the reason those dudes came is who it was supposed to Rob them so this is what they were talking about yes where were you when you were talking when they were talking about it you're in the living room you were sitting I was kidding I mean I was there in the living room and they were talking enough is that when you were on the did you already get hit at this point yes okay well where was point when they were talking about this talking about uh when they were talking about boy trying to rob and where was Hoyt every time I be used already previous on the floor it was on the floor uh within 30 seconds of him being in there 20 seconds of him being intervening and also um is when they attacked him and you need all you can hear is him screaming as they chase him around the living room okay it was quite still screaming when they were talking about boy trying to rob him went ahead so while they're talking what happened there wasn't really no talking I mean it's simple I mean we he came in and I said wait man you got me out of here I said man I told you I'd be sorry then boom it's when they came out the back and then okay and I was so what ended up happening and that basically they were there for you um and all I'm thinking is he's just gonna kill me he's gonna kill me too you know and I seen who I think basically got onto the ground I was like I told the officers I was sitting there and uh this is me basically the whole time once he got me down this whole time so this is all I can see and I was like this the whole time I just and I was like please just gonna pull drag up hanging out this is all I can see like this because I couldn't because every time I moved or make a little sound you know his gun he's a [ __ ] changes you [ __ ] say anything and I'm just trying to do whatever I can to stay alive so what happened Ahoy he attacked him we're basically running around you know trying to do whatever you can stream hard and they're hitting them wait did it falling down on the ground I'm already down then I can look because as I'm paying attention this way I'm facing I can even hoist a few feet away I can see it I mean I can see every you know them hitting them and um awesome it's kind of dippy milk they wait I mean I couldn't see because my head wasn't like this the whole time as I'm laying down so I wasn't like that you know to be honest with you I wouldn't want to I want to see as little as possible and uh like what I grabbed a gun for the Patrick what kind of going to Patrick and it wasn't big or small it was it wasn't a handheld I didn't really see it to be honest but it was a gun so you grew up Patrick's going Patrick's gun and it went off boom that's all hers everything and you know and everybody heard that they were just boo you know kind of spooked and like I thought I heard someone say I mean it on my shows when tourney describes what happened he admits that even if he had been able to watch he wouldn't have done so and tried to avoid seeing as much as he did watching your friend being murdered is traumatic and most people would have done the same so there it is I want to say it was a boy all right he's like and just kind of like and that was that was the last I heard of him it's the last that last voice I heard from White okay what happened after the gun went off what does everyone do just start cussing amongst each other I'm still on the ground with with Paige he's got the rifle over my head he's hitting me he's got a Preston like this hard as he can um they're just in shock they didn't know it just because then of course there's like we didn't they didn't plan on we didn't plan to repeat you came in the wrong place at the wrong [ __ ] time that's what they told you yeah I told you that Paige page you said that I mean they said you know as they went on throughout the rest of you know tonight that's their you know clean doing whatever they're doing trying to wash away whatever evidence or whatever they're trying to do yeah I just was like I was just like this like the wrong place so what were they cleaning up here cleaning I seen the girl um they were they were Pages girlfriend I've seen I've seen her clean the blood off the wall I don't know if she had anything part of it but to be honest I mean I would think that she would be a Lord but why not because Hoyt always had a weakness for women he loves his girls you know yeah where did they were in point and I think that was like debate or something like you know I was just you know in his advice Center type like okay we'll just use him we'll Place one time the word was the question so Paige's girlfriend's cleaning blood off the wall what did they do with Hoyt body stage there for a while for a little bit until they were and they just put like all kinds of things wrapped up and like either towels you know rugs like a little white clear tarp just whatever they can find really he said it for a while as they discuss you know what they're gonna do and they kept asking me Peter I don't [ __ ] say anything are you a picture of him say anything are you you know what I'm saying yeah I didn't think it didn't matter anything I was gonna make it I didn't think I was gonna [ __ ] live I said this is it man this is [ __ ] I'm done and they're like so do you know what happened I was like um you know that's the key survival you know whatever you can do to survive do it and that's what I did so did anybody leave or did anyone else come after Hoyt was shot I believe I can remember not anybody leaving all right so they wrapped the body up what do they do when did they move to move the body or is the body still in there I think no maybe the body from where he was shot at and where he died at you know if that was his last breath or not where did they move them to the back to the backyard and I'll say the back door why don't they move into the backyard I have no idea I have no idea he sat there for a while you know what was what did they do when he was out back they didn't seemed like they were like the plan was off like they didn't know what were they talking about they were saying we didn't I didn't mean they said I know that they've said comments like we didn't mean to shoot him it wasn't like that and Pete is not you know we didn't come here to do that it wasn't our job and I'm what what are they doing once he's outside um they're just talking amongst each other and kind of going back and forth do they ask you to do anything were you helping them do anything they they made but I heard him say the recording I'm pretty sure 20 isn't absolutely sure about a few of the details which is consistent with everything that was going on at the time and the main focus of his attention being on Survival 100 he I want to say he left he had a leader because I didn't see his face the corn yeah the guy that stayed that had a mask around stage during the whole time my mask for like a big dinner just something that covered his face where you couldn't see his face where did he go I don't know where he went but I know that I didn't see him for a good amount of time he just kind of pops up did anybody else I was trying to make those sort of movements um not that I know of I was just kind of after a while they're like she goes does it what the sit goes like he was looking at me shaking his head they're like I think he wants to live I think you I think this is a man right here fight for his life basically doing anything he he can't just for survival and that was my thought process because I've seen you know I watched investigations here I've read and all that and I like them shows and I've just you know seen it where they they gotta act like they're their friend and you know and first opportunity I got though that was away from everybody I mean let it be known like this this did happen though you know it doesn't deserve this so while he's outside what else is going on what's everyone doing my who's outside they're just back and forth simply going in and out of the house so we're going in and out the side the entrance of the gate um I don't really know that sometimes they kind of Mumble things and maybe they want me to know everything or something I don't know okay so is Hoyt in the backyard right now no okay how did he move from the backyard and moved his body from about eventually after so long um what's his name um said help and I've said a little body it seems like uh his name how do you know say this the first time he said it's his name because they're gonna use it because they asked me a question they're like what's in your trunk and I was like yes and you know empty Gap brand new gas can and they're like and he goes so there's room I said yes sorry for using the [ __ ] Trump they're kind of piecing things together you always seem like do they take the loner out he says he did that's what Paige said he did he got two flying on him from when I went do you know where it went when you put the body in the trunk did you see the liner in there it was just blank like it was like you know there's still like stuff from the you know the car like the Steelers team they go mining without everything like he gives you a it goes like this he you get your spare it's just empty okay so you did you see the rug anywhere at the house could be in the backyard because they ended up moving my car from the way I pulled in to backing it up um where they back it up like to the gate let's say they decide the gate where you can I guess you can probably access a little easier on what side of the house is that on it would be their house says they say I'm facing their house pages on this is on his right side this is other townhouse it'd be on this side like that side of the house it was on their side though so once the body's in the trunk would happen um The Killers asked tornay if he was going to tell him giving him false hope that they were going to let him live this is also even if they are unaware of it a way of justifying their choice to kill him since he would be leaving them no other choice they're talking uh I mean basically they're they're just talking amongst themselves I don't really know what they're saying they're just they're surprised that it seems like they're thinking of what to do right what do we do next like the trunk where you guys go where'd the camera go we uh my age had his head black dots Dodge truck the four-door or whatever I think it was a four-door you get it back Dodge truck he was with the other guy Corey he didn't really see much so we're the Dodge truck left the potassium was there it was back into the like driveway next to the dumpster the opposite side the closest to the neighborhood oh God um so the Paige Paige and Corey stayed at the house yeah yeah what is the camera still at the house no here he's gone so I got I got off the camera by Maya who got who got my Camry uh me Patrick and said Rose he goes it says I'll drive he's a passenger okay so when you guys left in the Camry Pages Blackstrap was still in the driveway or no when we left with the camera yeah um because I knew they were sitting in the car like Corey and made her sitting in the truck you know of course Corey in the driver's seat and pay his girlfriend was in the passenger seat the worst Paige Paige is kind of walking around delegating you know kind of like it seemed like he was the boss of the whole thing telling people you know what to do where to go because I mean okay did you ever see that truck leave while you were there yes I did okay who left with it I mean it was everybody besides me Patrick said the person was the girlfriend Paige and the dude Corey of course so they all left with the truck what did the truck look like this is a black truck it was parked against that tree right there there's a two-door four-door I want to say it was four-door it had a bunch of stuff on the back like you know maybe the tools and stuff like that like a little bit older and nowhere okay I couldn't really see maybe in between well I wasn't too real wasn't super new um all right we'll get back to that Dodge but when you guys left it was driving what did you guys drive to um we drove to uh thank you yes we went to first before we went to the Alpine and said since Sid had like a family Roanoke as a family member or not but it was another black guy you know because he took us over to uh he drove over there I'm thinking right now um [Music] it wasn't too far from the place within a one knows that whatever they are seeing is going to be important later people very rarely keep exact tabs on the movements of others and sometimes in an effort to remember can create scenarios that don't know if they told him what happened but I'm sure he had an idea like you know um uh and she said he said this is this is the guy that was with that you know came there at the same time white did different colors um barely there though um I guess Patrick was staying there because girlfriend but we parked next to the place there's some people in the porch I really couldn't see because we didn't park in front we kind of person aside like the next building over how many buildings are there total buildings as in I mean that place is Big it's the news I'm excited do you know where the apartment head injury probably isn't helping either but he has denied treatment multiple times it's not too far we're counted on the outskirts but we did my parents about Italian you know I had told you guys just got you he agreed and the whole thing back in my head I was like I was hoping they'd say I hope they don't say that's because they're going to do the body thing and I was hoping they don't go do this going to be done and um um and uh I just said hey I didn't tell my house even though they have my driver's license and my address because they even told me plus they have without my [ __ ] and my wife is nothing um I said there's my house I could see it because I know my neighborhood I mean I've lived there since we lived there since 86. what's the address 1263 Walden Road okay and as we're getting closer to my house like probably a quarter mile I'm just like you know I can see you know you can you know I can see pretty far I was like hey how's the kids coming up right here you know I home I know that she's home her my dad's switched because my dad went down to Daytona and then my dad's my mom switched and came back you know because my brother just got out of prison he did like thing and uh as I went outside you know eventually after a while they're like you know pace place um you know if you run she tries to run shoot him so they had someone good they waited to get really set she got the dumpster right there in the driveway there's an opening door um you couldn't see him unless you walk out the front door and see but stay right there he's like told his gun like if you like basically like I'm this close to you so if you try to do anything funny we will shoot you basically make sure that he put one on the roof says if you run shoot him shoot him kill him um I finally everything got set up we were worth the courage he's like you got this you you good go outside he had paid attention you know she's like hey you want to go with them you want to go with them you know know um and uh we were walking I couldn't really see because of the glare from this you know the lights from the house and as we got closer he's not in the car and then the Jimmy and the Explorer pulls back up you know I guess he left because it was taking so long whatever you know he pulls up now back to change it but we love to see that D was not in there and about I don't know I was like oh what are we gonna do now I'm thinking this doesn't look good for me because this guy's not here he might have heard something he might have ran he could have just boom and indexing another let's just saying you need to talk to who you want to see him and we're like and my main thing was this for me to stay safe is to make sure everybody else stay safe you know and and yeah he's like let's give it garbage bag and the last place I seen it was outside the back door they put all the white stuff in the basket that is they were gonna burn it like a little stuff and they took all my stuff out of the car and they're like Clint basically clean my car out it seemed like they took all my stuff out of the car like to plug in like the outlets to plug your charger your phone charger it's a three-way thing I had a little Bluetooth speaker had two chords that run into the thing those ones in three-way my battery was a two-way regular one and it had two chords going to charge your phone they brought all that inside and was left on the couch I'm like God damn let's see like they set me up like you notice or something and uh that was that's the last place I saw myself that's the last place to put Hoyts all the belongings during that big trash bag you're trying to play cleaning things up and they were all kind of like weird you can tell like everybody was like I'm sure of everybody it seemed well why don't you you want me just to give it to you he's talking to me and his girlfriend female and she's like yeah and so she takes it and then brings it inside and then so just tell him to call me man tell her then he talked to him over the course of the interview the words have begun to flow more easily for tornado he's still very much affected but there is also a sense of relief at being DNA to rule out because we know what your involvement was so if we find a piece of evidence and your DNA is on it we can explain why your DNA is on it if we didn't have it and we you know we found DNA trial each of the accused said that there had been no plan for Burge to be murdered and that the shooting was an accident Paige vowell was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison all four men were found guilty of two counts of false imprisonment Howard and Moraine were found guilty of theft while Briggs was found guilty of assault the fifth defendant Vicki Strickland was found not guilty of accessory after the fact
