This is Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly with another update on Hurricane Ian. The latest update shows Ian is moving further to the east, which puts Flagler County in greater danger of having strong tropical storm winds or even hurricane-force winds within the next 24 to 36 hours. Ian is also a slow-moving and a very wet storm, meaning that it could impact Flagler County in the way Hurricane Irma did in 2017 with significant flooding. Remember, Ian can still change course. Flagler County’s courts and all public schools will be closed for the remainder of this week. Flagler County Emergency Management is expected to open two shelters tomorrow at 1:00 PM. Rymfire Elementary school will be a special needs shelter for residents that have special medical needs or assistance and will be staffed by the Flagler County Health Department. Bunnell Elementary will be a general population shelter also opening at 1:00 PM tomorrow. Sheriff’s deputies will staff both shelters for your security. Evacuation orders are likely to be issued soon by Flagler County Emergency Management. This is likely to occur on the coastal barrier areas, areas prone to flooding and for modular homes and RV’s. If evacuations are ordered the County is likely to also order curfews. This would be done to make sure criminals do not try to take advantage of Hurricane Ian and steal from you or your business. We will have more information for you on this tomorrow. Remember, if you are in an evacuation area, we urge you to leave. If you stay, realize that first responders may not be able to get to you quickly in case of an emergency due to the weather conditions. Anyone who wants to put shutters up should get that done by Wednesday night at the latest. Today was the last day sandbags will be made available to Flagler County residents. Expected weather conditions moving forward will not allow for the sandbag sites to remain operational. Trash collection has been canceled throughout the county. Flagler County has opened an Ian hotline to answer questions. The phone number is 386-313-4200. Tomorrow, this phone number will operate 24 hours a day. Starting tomorrow evening all deputies will be working 12-hour shifts with days off cancelled so that we can handle anything Hurricane Ian throws or, should I say, dumps on our community. Our high water rescue vehicles and boats are ready and the men and women of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office are prepared and ready for Hurricane Ian. Please make sure you are, too. Please continue to follow us on social media for further updates.
