Well, Chief Michael Chitwood has made quite a name for himself after taking the reins of the Daytona Beach Police Department. >> [applause] >> I welcome Mr. Michael Chitwood as our new police chief of Daytona Beach, Florida. Mr. Chitwood I have to tell you that I am ecstatic to be here. This is a police department and a city like none other in America. >> [music] >> detectives probably identify He's the only one I'll call. And [music] I think vice versa. Same thing. I mean, I call him three and four times a day. The guy hasn't been cleaned in over a thousand years. It's skanky, it's filthy. If I was a roach, I wouldn't live inside. >> on his nose and urinate all over the criminal justice system. Junior has grabbed headlines in Central [music] Florida for his hands-on, always-out-there, colorful character. Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Not [music] in my town tonight. I would like to think that he watched me [music] and he saw how when you want to bring an issue to the front, sometimes [music] you got to be in your face. >> The father-and-son policing style has led to a lot of media attention for the chiefs. In their respective cities, both have been referred to as Media Mike, [music] and they make no apologies for it. Your biggest critics are the ones that never get off the bench. They can't find a French fry in a Happy Meal, but yet they're [music] the first people to complain about something or complain about the way you're doing it. He creates the same controversy [music] I that I do. This is absolute bull This is nothing more than their way of stopping the will of the people. That's not a bad Not a bad thing. Does it >> [music] >> anger people? Does it piss people off? Yeah. But do you get results? [music] Absolutely. Street talk, the chiefs say, because they're street cops who think you have to mix it up to make a difference. Dream [music] jobs, working together. Of course I want to be the commissioner. You have to be like the deputy. Can you imagine [music] that press conference be crashing into one another getting down to get the press conference? That would be kind of epic. You know, Thomas town attorney. No! All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. Let's go. I may be a little late to the pool party, but I'm hoping to jump into this race [music] and make a big splash. To the aftermath of last night's primary election, among the big winners, Daytona Beach's police chief. He is now Volusia County's new sheriff. No height record. They won't They won't do it. Signal four spotter out. Done. Overpass. We have plain people clear the area. Pin. Pin. Pin. >> [music] >> So, this [ __ ] [ __ ] ends now. >> [music] >> Sheriff's office, search warrant, open the door. If you don't sell [ __ ] dope, then you don't have to [ __ ] worry [music] about us being in your [ __ ] living room, right? >> [music and cheering] >> For me, damn that old [ __ ] >> [music] >> Hello. Hey, how you doing? Oh, no. No. No. No. No, I retired. I retired. You know, call Channel 2. They have a reporter in my place, but I'm done. You couldn't pay me to start reporting again. Oh, I'm sorry. I hope you understand. All right, good luck. Bye. Hello. Claire, what are you doing? Brian, how are you old buddy? Hey, listen. I need a favor. Um, all those times I gave you that little bit of information and uh you had those great breaking stories. Eh, need a favor. Going to need you to do a little reporting. You got to come out of retirement for me. What? Yeah, Sheriff Chitwood is actually celebrating his 20th year Oh. in Volusia County law enforcement. >> 20 years? Has it really been 20 years? Oh, yeah. That's a story. That is definitely a news story. Oh, Brian. I'm on it. Okay. I'm completely and utterly on it. See you soon. Bye. Okay, see you. Hi everybody. I'm [music] Claire Metz with CMN News. Back from retirement for one reason and one reason only. Because Sheriff Mike Chitwood is celebrating 20 years in Volusia County and I was there for all of them. Interesting 20 years to say the least. We just went to the hospital to be treated for that very deep cut to his finger after a suspect bit him and a broken hand plus he also took a few stitches to his head but check out the teddy bear he got from his compatriots. Even the tuft of gray hair on the top there. First of all, we learned a new vocabulary. Scumbag came into our vocabulary. For the scumbags of this community. Scumbag, dirtball, crumb bum, you know, I could go on with a list of a hundred names. Not for nothing. Oh, he said that all the time. Shocks the conscience. We were shocked regularly when we'd see Sheriff Mike Chitwood. As a police chief, as sheriff, he really changed how we all approached TV news stories because he was such a part of it so often. Just bear down and stick it out as best we can. Here he comes. Look at the guy, doesn't even wear a raincoat. What is the matter with you? Where's your raincoat? Uh Uh, listen to him. He's live We're live on television chief right now. He was out there in order to resolve problems. So more often than not if there was a big scene he would try and talk someone down. The man saved my life. The way that the chief handled it as far as what he was saying to me and you know being compassionate by what that that I can't repay and I know it. He would respond with his fellow deputies with the community because he felt it was necessary because he wanted to be part of all of that action and he wanted to show everyone that he was as part of the community as they were. I think it's important that these people who you screwed over you look them in the eyes. Always visual always insisted that if there was something happening we knew what was going on as quickly as the law allowed. If you don't believe in God things like this make you believe in God. >> [applause] >> Does it smell like a new car to you? I got your mic wood. Thank you for your 20 years. This is a good reason to get back [music] into TV news to celebrate you.
