[Music] [Applause] [Music] I wanted to work for a large agency just because I feel like you get a little bit of everything working not just the same area, the same six, seven square miles. Uh Mesa is pretty large. We touch several cities. So we border AJ, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler. We get a little bit of everything. Um, and there's a variety of everything. So you can go to one end of the city and it be, you know, multi-million dollar homes and you can go to one where it's, you know, lower income communities, but you get to interact with so many different people. Um, me personally, what I like about doing this job is finding real criminals. Um, they're there. They hide pretty well, but you can find them. Uh, just depends on the effort that you put in to finding those people. >> So, we've got this vehicle in front of us. As we drove by, we noticed the driver was >> uh either holding her cell phone or talking on her cell phone. Um, both of which are civil violations. So, we're going to conduct a traffic stop on this vehicle. We'll approach this as kind of an educational stop. Um and and see see if the driver is even aware that this law is in place. Hello, miss. How are you? >> Good. How are you? >> Hey. So, the reason I'm stopping you is you were on your cell phone while you were driving. Okay. So, it's super simple. More just an educational thing. What was going on with that? >> Um, I was just moving it over to the cup holder and then I moved it back cuz I realized it was >> Okay. >> flop around. >> All right. So, do you have your driver's license on you? >> Yes, I do. >> Any weapons in the car? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. You're fine. >> Would you like me to pull it out for you? >> Weapons? >> Yes. >> What do you have? >> I have a gun. where at without reaching for it. Nope, you don't need to touch it. You're fine. Can you roll that? Oh, it is down. All right. She's got a She got a 422 in the center console. [Music] Thank you. Do you have updated registration and insurance? Where is it at before you go reach for it? >> My insurance, my registration is in here and my insurance is on my phone. >> Okay. Any other weapons in the car besides the glove box or the center console? I might have a knife, but I'm not sure. >> Okay. As long as you don't grab anything you're not supposed to, we're fine with that. As soon as I asked her if she had any weapons in the car, she disclosed immediately. She said that she had weapons in the car and she'd be willing to remove them. Obviously, we don't want people grabbing any weapons during a traffic stop, whether it's knives, guns, whatever it may be. Um, Arizona is a proarmmed state, right? So, if somebody has a gun in their car, that's fine. Uh, just disclose it to an officer. Oh, that's awesome. Well, thank you. >> All right, Jordan. >> There's that back for you. Okay. >> Just a ver warning, okay? Especially cuz we have rush hour traffic right now. There's a lot of people out on the road. Let's It's handsree. >> Sounds good. >> Okay. >> All right. Have a good rest of your day. >> All right. Thank you so much. >> All right. Have a good day. >> I asked the lady if there was any weapons in the vehicle, and she informed me that there is a handgun in the center console, which is not an abnormal thing, uh, especially in the state that we live in. It's how they handle it, right? If I ask someone if they have weapons, they're required to disclose whether or not they have weapons in the vehicle. If they fail to do so, it's a criminal offense. So, the call came in as a shoplifting. Um, but it sounds like staff here at the Home Depot recognized a male who had stolen items before and he was back in the store attempting to return the items. >> What's he wearing? >> Uh, so it looks like he's wearing a light blue gray flannel and jean shorts >> right in front of us. And that is the LP, I think. Yeah. And so >> we'll go talk to him and figure out what's going on. >> Excuse me. Thank you. >> He has been previously trespassed. >> Walking away from us. >> You just do something right there. You just do something right there. >> Hey, take your hands out of your pockets. >> I don't know. Something over there. >> Put your hands on top of your head. Put your hands on top of your head. >> This is not just detain. >> No. No. Don't throw nothing. >> K21 detain. >> You go with I'm turning your hands. >> Yeah. It's not meant to be comfortable. Tutor. >> Yeah. >> Um, those are all chained. Do you happen to have an employee that maybe can >> unchain those and see? It's a There's an orange straw. What did you come here with the intention of doing? Um, returning a default set that was mine. >> Uh, returning a what? >> A default set. >> Was not yours. >> No, it wasn't mine. He came in and returned with his ID. You know what I mean? >> With his ID? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So, >> you have somebody else's ID on you. >> No. No. >> You just said you used a friend's ID to return property. >> My friend came in to help him, you know, bring >> Okay. You're stepping all over yourself right now, right? Here's the deal. Listen, just just just listen for one second, okay? I'm a pretty reasonable officer and a person. When you start lying to me and playing games, my willingness to work with you goes out the window and we you will go to jail for something like trespassing right now. Or you could be honest. We can start again right now. And if you give me another lie, we're done with it. We'll just do it how how it needs to be done. You >> didn't come here to >> I'm not talking about stealing. You were trying to return something that was that did not belong to you. >> You just said it. You just said you were returning something that did not belong to you. >> I said that >> there's a orange straw which was right where he was looking when we came up. And so these cut straws with the powder inside, that's what we see when people are abusing fentanyl. He had given Home Depot a false name when he was trespassed before. >> So he knew he was trespassed, but then he said he didn't know he was trespassed. We got his accurate name. He said first he was in here to return some oil um that a friend had brought in. Then he started talking to officer Horn about a DeWalt tool set. Now he's known from Home Depot side to steal things um and then come back later and return them. Right when me and Lof came up um RP had just said that he saw him throw something. I walked over and I immediately saw this straw underneath the the workbenches. confirmed with RP that he saw him toss something of similar color in between those workbenches. So, we had to pull all I'm sorry, not the the toolboxes. So, we had to pull all these tool boxes. This is the same straw that I saw was sitting right in the gap where the RP said that he had tossed it and it had just rolled under one of the tool boxes. Um, and there's a little bit of white residue inside of it. So, we came out here for that uh possible shoplift. Um, when we contacted the suspect, he immediately tossed uh what looked like an item of drug paraphernalia in between a couple tool boxes. Um, then we come to find out through our investigation that he was previously trespassed uh by the staff here by loss prevention. Um, they have video of the incident. They have his photograph and the signed log where he provided a fake name. So, um, what it looks like right now is that we have, uh, definitely arrest on trespass. Still looking at the shoplift fraudulent return aspect of it. There's a lot of video to comb through. Um, but this looks like there was three people involved in what is essentially a fraud scheme where one person will go in, select the merchandise off the shelf, they'll take it somewhere else in the store and have someone else return it while a third person's as a lookout or a getaway driver. So, this car was driving without it lights on. So, we're going to do a traffic stop and see what's up with it. Looks like eight king zero. Whoa, that's also weird. Landed 83rd place. Hello. >> Hello. >> How are you, man? >> Good. What did I do wrong? >> So, when you pulled out onto Broadway, you didn't have your headlights on. So, you crossed east and westbound traffic without your headlights on. >> I I know. like it. I I just noticed that when I when I got to the >> He just put a brand new battery in it and got from the auto parts store. He's been having issues with it. >> Okay. All right. Uh any weapons in the car, gentlemen? >> No. >> Okay. Are you able to roll that passenger window down for me? >> Thank you. Hello. What's going on? >> Uh just battery issues. It's messing with my lights and stuff. >> Oh, is that why your lights turned off? >> Yeah. Doesn't seem like it'd be safe to drive on the road if you knew it had battery issues then. Right. >> We just bought a brand new battery. Just got it from AutoZone. >> You just got it? >> Yeah. Just put it in. >> Did Did that happen before? After your light shut off when you were leaving the parking lot. >> You didn't turn him on as he was pulling out until he got out the road and then he pulled him. >> Right. Which is a violation, but >> Right. I'll be Can you give me a minute? >> No. >> You need to give me a minute. Just got pulled up. cars lights weren't on when it pulled out into the major intersection, which obviously is a hazard. He's kind of slow to respond, looking down, doesn't want to look up at me. Um, just some kind of indicators that there may be some impairment. Uh, especially driving and not realizing your headlights are on in the dark. >> Oh, look at him. Okay. >> All right, Raymond, you said you're going to be good to do some of these tests real quick. Just make sure you're okay to be driving. >> Yeah. >> All right, let's walk on over here to the sidewalk where it's a little bit more flat. Short steps through the turn, keeping your lead foot planted, and then take nine back down. One, two, three, all the way to nine. Got it? >> All right. >> All right. Let's give it a shot whenever you're ready. Three. >> 4 5 7 8 9 >> left. >> Hey, do me a favor real quick. Just um stand put your feet together, arms down at your side. Okay. All right. So, you can just I'm going to have the light. I have probable cause to arrest Raymond here for driving um driving while impaired. >> So once my partner's done doing his thing over there, I'm going to walk over there. We will uh detain Raymond and then he'll get transported and processed for DUI. So um Raymond, you go ahead and relax for me. All right. So here's the deal. You're going to be placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. Okay? >> As long as you don't do anything crazy, you should be released tonight. Okay? So, somebody either one of us or somebody can come pick you up from home. All right. But what is going to happen is you're going to get processed for a DUI and your car is going to get towed. Okay. All right. Here's what's going to happen. This car is going to get towed because he's being arrested for DUI. Um, he wants his phone. Where's his phone at? >> Phone is right here. >> Okay. I'll take that. So, here's what's going to happen. Um, he's going to get processed. He is probably going to call you to come and pick him up for a ride. He's not going to go to jail as long as nothing crazy happens. Okay. >> Yeah. He's not that kind of He's not a lash out kind of guy. So, >> totally fair. So, uh, he'll probably give you a call to come and pick him up if that's all right. If you guys want if you want to start figuring that out. >> Okay. >> It'll probably be about an hour, hour and a half. >> Okay. >> All right. We'll have you hop out and you're good to go. >> All right. Thank you. >> Yep. If you want to hang out across the street and call for a ride, that's fine. >> Actually, I'm I'm only going to um 80. >> Okay. >> So, that's it. All right. He's got my number in the phone. >> Okay. Yep. You guys have a good night. Be safe. >> Thanks, man. >> Have a good night, Michael. >> Michael. Damn it, Michael. >> One second. >> Hold on. >> Can you actually just come back over here and help me with something? >> Help you with something? >> Yeah, just come hang out by the car. >> You told me I was free to go. >> Michael, don't be stupid. You told me I was free to go. >> Okay, you're not free to go anymore. Okay, you're going to hang out >> and do what I tell you to do. >> Okay, >> walk over to the car. Put down the lighter in your hands or hand it to me. >> There you go. >> Thank you. [Music] >> Michael, you have any weapons on you? >> No. >> Without reaching for anything, pocket knives or anything? >> Um, >> without reaching for it? >> No, I don't have any pocket knives. >> Okay, walk back over here to the back of the car. Can I call you right back, please? >> Here, come here. Lean up against the back of the car here. You can just face me, but just lean up against the back. >> Can you uh hang out with him? >> Sure. >> So, this is why I asked about passenger stuff. Um, this this looks to me like a white crystal-like substance. Uh, through my training and experience, I'm gonna say that this is probably a little bit of leftover methamphetamine. Um, we'll get it tested though with a true NAR device. But now that there's a little bit of that, um, in here, we have a probable cause search of the vehicle. So, I'm going to search the entirety of the vehicle. Uh, make sure that there's no further drugs or drug paraphernia. >> Michael, there's drugs where you were sitting. >> Where I was sitting? >> Mhm. >> I don't know what to tell you. >> Don't play games with me, Michael. >> I'm not playing games with anyone. I'm just I don't know what to tell you. If anything's in that car, it was in that car before I got in it. >> Okay. You met up with him, you said what, two and a half hours ago? >> Two hours ago. Yeah, we drove from my mother's house to the auto zone to here. >> Okay. So, you've been riding around in this car for a couple hours. >> Um, I've been riding around this car as long as it takes from to get to from AJ to the auto zone over here. >> Okay. >> And then to right now. So, yes. >> Okay. And you've been in that front passenger seat? >> Uh, yes, I was. >> Okay. Just some marijuana pipes. Um, they're in the center console. Kind of consistent with our driver telling us that he smokes marijuana. Um, problem is when you start stopping cars and they take a while to stop and then they start taking things, shoving them under seats in between things and you never know what you're going to find. Nothing really in this pocket left. Oh, it's going to be another bag with white dust. So, so far we have >> the driver on DUI, correct? >> Suspected possibly cannabis or something else. Some mixture of >> correct. >> And then we're looking at potential on the passenger now. >> Yep. >> Just another marijuana thing. Um, I think that's going to be pretty much it as far as this bag goes. We still have the rest of the car, so keep going. So, what is this? >> I have no idea what that is. I honestly have no idea. >> Ask him whose bag that is. >> So, we're going to play the silly game. >> No, we're not playing this game cuz I don't know, dude. >> Cuz here's the thing, right? If I run your criminal history, you've never been arrested for drugs before. >> Yes, I have. >> You have? What kind of drugs? >> Speed, >> which is >> meth. >> Meth. So, you're telling me you don't know what that is? Looking at that. >> Looking at >> Having been a meth user, it looks like meth. >> Yes, it does. Right. But it's not that bag is not mine. >> Okay? >> That's on everything I I love and stand for. That bag is not mine. It's his bag. It was in there when I got in the car. >> Okay? >> If you want to ask him, ask him. I'm not trying to play any games with you or or or bull you in any way. >> Okay. Well, let me ask you a question now. Do you have anything on you that doesn't belong? >> Um, let's let's start here. If you lie to me, my willingness to work with you kind of goes away. >> Okay. I'm a pretty reasonable guy. If you're honest with me, there's room for work, right? I'm very reasonable when it comes to being nice people and cutting them brakes. >> I think I have a pipe in my bucket. >> Okay. >> But that bag of >> What kind of pipe? >> A speed pipe. >> Okay. All right. >> Because I it was in a cigarette pack and I grabbed that when I was getting out of the vehicle cuz I didn't want anybody to get arrested for it. I didn't know that was in there. >> Okay. >> That my head of God that this bag is not mine. >> Just leave it. You mind if I grab it out of your pocket cuz I don't want anything crazy happen. Just face the car. >> All right. Put your hands on the hood. >> It's in the cigarette pack. >> Yeah. Give me just a second. And I got to grab my flashlight. Anything pointing in your pocket going to poke, stick, or stab me? >> Nope. >> You said it's in the cigarette box. >> It's in the cigarette pack. >> Cuz that was that was sitting there by the console and I grabbed this and I put that in my pocket. Well, you see me pick it up. >> Okay. Do you have anything else in your pockets? >> No. >> Mind if I check? >> Go ahead. >> All right. >> Go ahead. Put your hands behind your back. >> Yeah. >> I don't have any more cuffs. You have a cuff? I'm not a I'm not a runner. >> Are you a good man? >> If you were going to run, your best opportunity was earlier. >> Yeah. I'm not I'm not a runner. >> Hey, so what happened with the passenger on this one? >> So, when I pulled him out of the car to initially release him, right? When we release people from a DUI and we go to tow a car, um prior to towing the car, you have to inventory the car, make sure there's something nothing in there that doesn't belong, right? Nothing that can't be towed in a tow truck um or to a tow facility. So upon going through the the backpack and the front passenger seat, uh there was this little bit of white crystal like substance which, you know, I recognize as methamphetamine. Um we'll get a true narrative to test at the uh at the jail. Um when I went and reconted the passenger, um this was found on his side of the car. So I asked him about it, right? Uh I talked to him up front and he was pretty honest. He said initially that he had a meth pipe, which is what this is in his front pocket. Okay. um in the cigarette container, which is where I found it. Uh he then also gave me consent to go and search the rest of his pockets, make sure there wasn't anything else. And then when I searched the rest of his pockets, there's about a gram of what he also identified as methamphetamine. So more of that white crystalike substance. >> And this was the same passenger that when we asked him if he had anything, he said, "Absolutely not. I'm sober." Okay. >> Correct. >> So >> So now the front the front passenger is going to get booked for possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. the uh driver is going to go get processed for a DUI and that's pretty much the end of this drive. So, >> and all this started from headlights being off [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
