I think the beauty of this program, it builds inherent [music] confidence in our officers. Jiu-Jitsu is really, really difficult. And for those [music] who choose to train every single week, they learn a lot about who they are, but they also [music] know that even though they may be uncomfortable, they're not in any real danger. [music] And coming out of things, it allows you to be a lot calmer in real life or on the [music] streets. And when you're calmer, we get better outcomes for the officers and for the members of our community. A few times a week, I trade [music] my uniform for a ghee. As chief of police, I carry great responsibility, but [music] when I step onto these mats, I'm just another one of the guys. The rank fades away. It's about learning, growing, and challenging ourselves together. Training alongside our officers here at the Mesa [music] Police Department is one of the most rewarding parts of my week. I've been practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for years now. I'm a brown belt. But what keeps me coming back isn't just the technique. It's the connection. It builds trust, humility, and respect. I also get [music] to roll with my son, who proudly serves here in Mesa. These moments remind me why training matters. Brazilian jiu-jitsu [music] teaches control, balance, and restraint, the foundation of deescalation. These skills help our officers resolve [music] encounters safely, protecting lives without having to reach for a weapon. Our program has transitioned off of a traditional policing use [music] of force that involves pain in order to gain compliance. Our program now doesn't >> [music] >> utilize pain for compliance. We actually utilize the body's natural mechanics against the person that doesn't want to be taken [music] into custody. and we gain a mechanical advantage to get an individual into custody. We've shared this program with agencies [music] across Arizona and the nation because we've seen firsthand how it can save lives [music] and reduces officer and suspect injuries. For me, it's more than just a workout. It's about discipline, focus, and staying ready mentally and physically [music] to serve our community with honor.
