[Music] I just live in fear is he my mind every day okay Willis today the days he gonna kill me today is he gonna rape me today and it just doesn't seem like people understand [Music] [Music] it's pretty hard um she's you know how to be on a lot of medication she's had to let go a lot of friends her and I have pretty much become best friends you know which is that to me you know I I want her to have a life but she is she's afraid anywhere we go a dating him when I was 14 and we dated from July to probably October [Music] I just said like I don't like you like that anymore like I just want to be a friend strictly and he started calling me all these names and it started to grading me in all types of forum so I was like okay well we're not gonna be friends he finds her through social media and makes these fake accounts because he knows she's not gonna accept him we got him served the first year and we went through the whole juvenile court system through that because he was sitting outside of my house like waiting for me to come outside he repeatedly called he FaceTime me a couple times the thing that scares me is that if he does everything that he's asked to do which is counseling pays fines not contact her he could potentially get it reversed within a year and so that to me is a little just you know disturbing because of the past history you know once he's cleared of anything he just starts all over again right now according to the American Psychological Association 41 percent of young women and 37 percent of young men okay these are adolescents report being victims in one way or another in an abusive dating relationship we have got to take these situations seriously and work with our kids help them understand what's next how can they break this cycle of violence how can they stop this and they do have the power to stop it we just have to encourage them to do that [Music] in December of 2007 all right Katie had started dating Daniel this young man that she was going to school about three or four months into the relationship we started seeing where Daniel was becoming very jealous and possessive of her [Music] okay well you have a really great day and I love you and she said I love you too mom little did I know that was the last time I'd hear those words from her because later that day he took her life right in front of our house school and our lives have never been the same since [Music] after the fog lifted about three weeks later we made a couple of family decisions and one of them wants to get Katie's we started we wanted to honor Katie all right and you know honoring Katie meant that we were going to help others and help other young people like herself not have to do with this or kind of understand you know that you know see see what an unhealthy relationship looks like so they can avoid it or or or get the early warning signs or understand it so that they can get out sooner a lot of people don't understand that abuse is not just physical okay there's the verbal emotional psychological digital aspects to it none of those are tangible okay but nonetheless there is abuse in every one of those forms I encourage anybody that's in an abusive relationship please reach out there are places out there that can help okay Katie's way is one of them all right you have the Mesa Family Advocacy Center in Mesa all right you have saved the family as well and talked to an advocate to help them do that safety planning help them understand the necessity of each thing that they need to do I would say definitely be in tune with your kids you know and listen to what they're saying and be aware don't be afraid to tell your parents because I know I was in the beginning because I thought you think it's your fault and it's really not your fault it's like a yo-yo with the victim okay they leave they go back they leave they go back they leave they go back they leave they go back and they do this several times over but then sure enough the abuser gets upset about something and it starts over again I do want to like be able to share my story and be able to speak out against teen violence because I know how it is [Music]
