Dispatch: [inaudible] stationed here for a while. Robb Wolfson: So, it started in the summer of 2019, and I've been doing it for about three years now. Public Safety support specialists, we tend to handle non-emergency calls, cold calls, and that typically covers things like stolen vehicles, vandalism, theft of property, accidents in some cases, and found property. So, we're going to head to the recovery of a stolen vehicle. This is a really good job in terms of being able to feel like you're helping people in the community. So, I'll look up the license plate. The key for us is really the VIN number, so it's got both plates. Yep, that's a good sign. Yep. 5-0. So, we got a stolen car here that we're going to recover. Yeah, I'd say one of the best parts of this job is definitely getting a stolen vehicle back to someone. Obviously, a vehicle means a great deal to someone, especially if it's their only vehicle. Usually, they're pretty excited to get it back and even if it's not in good shape, at least to have the closure of knowing where it is or if they had left items inside. So that's definitely one of the better parts of this job, I would say. But we can see if it's got a battery, stuff like that. Me personally, I like to be a problem solver, so a lot of times what we're doing is we're trying to put them in a better position at least, even though they've endured a crime at that point. I always talk to folks about how it got stolen before. I actually do enjoy the aspect of talking to the public, particularly about ways to avoid future crime too. One thing you may want to consider doing to avoid in the future is to get a really good kill switch installed because nothing's foolproof, but the more you do to present obstacles to them, especially with the older cars, the better I would say. I mean, at least for me, I think the best jobs, assuming everything is going smoothly and I'm having a good day, is just a day where you're pretty busy. So, we are headed to a stolen vehicle call. This person said they saw their vehicle take off but couldn't really give us directions or an identity who did it. So, I'm going to go ahead and take this call. A lot of us come from different backgrounds, so a lot of folks are retired officers, not only from Portland, but other jurisdictions. My background has more to do with community engagement and planning, and I think that's actually a real strength of this program because we bring in different skills that way and backgrounds that aren't necessary law enforcement. So that kind of course colors the way we can do our job and just what we're bringing into the bureau that way. I understand. Yeah, no, I mean it's a crime regardless, but there's a lot you can do on your own to try and limit what we're seeing happen, especially around property crime. Usually when they made a police call, people are feeling pretty vulnerable and are really need in need of help. So this job gives you the opportunity to be able to help those people who really need some support at that point and try and better their life at that point.
