Come on. >> Then let me show you something. >> Stop preaching. Get out of the car. >> Get out of the car. Get out of the car. >> What are you doing? Stop. >> No. Okay. >> I didn't do nothing, bro. I didn't do nothing, bro. >> I didn't do nothing. >> But you think I stole him? >> Stop making it worse. We'll figure it out. >> If you didn't steal, we'll figure it out. Where am I? >> Arresting shoplifterss is never limited to the store. Even [music] when they escape or run away, their crimes can follow them until officers show up and they face the consequences. Here are the times when shoplifterss get arrested outside Walmart. >> Starting with the shoplifter who already had an active warrant. >> Why is that, sir? >> I just barely walked in. Oh, cuz they believe that you're shopping. >> No, sir. You can check me. >> Okay. Well, I think I have a warrant, but >> On the 5th of January, 2025, police [snorts] were dispatched to a Walgreens after receiving a report about a suspect connected to a theft that had occurred there. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer quickly tried to gather more details from the store employees. >> Hi. Is it going to be the one? the guy in the red that was across the door. >> And then I think this this girl like right here in front of that guy, the one in the gray, but she has a like a gray tote bag. Probably like a new one. >> Okay. Did you guys see her concealing or >> Oh, she did. Did you? I saw him. Yeah. >> Did you see the girl concealing anything? >> No. >> I think Angel was watching her. >> That's in here. I don't >> You said two. I didn't see I only saw the guy. >> That was one. And then the other girls back there. I think last time I saw her, she was in the first date. >> But are they together though? >> They all came in together. >> Like bundled like how close we are together. >> Oh, >> okay. But the girl in the grave over there is the other one. >> Yes. >> And that's the guy that >> The officer then approached the female suspect. From the way she spoke to her slow reactions, the woman appeared to be affected by something. >> How you doing, ma'am? >> Were you just inside the Walgreens? >> Yeah. They told me I had just walked in and one of the ladies told me I had to leave, but I didn't feel anything. >> You didn't take anything? >> No. [clears throat] >> Okay. >> Do you have an ID on you? >> No, [clears throat] I don't. >> What's your first name? >> Ari. >> Can you spell it for me? You want to stay while we're talking? [clears throat] >> A R I. >> Last name. >> Chavez. >> Chavez. >> Yeah. >> Date of birth. >> Oh. >> Yeah. The reason we're checking out with you right now is cuz they said, "Are you been trespassed before?" >> No. >> You haven't been trespassed? >> No. >> Okay. I guess they were suspecting you. And were you with two other people? Uh, >> no. I walked in alone. Well, according to them, you walked in with two other people and they >> they said one of you guys are shoplifting. >> That guy that they caught stealing walked in with two completely other different people. >> Okay. Well, the reason I'm out with you cuz they pointed you out specifically. >> Uhhuh. >> Okay. So, um they might want you trespass. So, I'll let I'm letting you know in advance. You probably can be trespass from here. >> Okay. Well, I think I have a warrant, but um I'm so sad. >> The woman then admitted that she had an active warrant, making the situation more serious and prompting the officer to move forward with her arrest. >> A couple years ago. >> Couple years ago. Okay. Well, you do have warrants, so if you could just stand up for me. You leave your bag down. >> Okay. Well, can I um am I going to jail? >> Yeah, you're going to jail. >> Okay. >> Do you have anything in your pockets? Slider. You have anyone you want to leave your bag with or? >> Um, my friend, she's in there. So, yeah, I'll probably But can I take my phone? >> Yeah, we can do that. Just go ahead. Turn around real quick. >> Okay. Make sure there's nothing in here. >> You're good. Um, is there any way? There you go. What's up? >> Is there any way I can um please call my mom? >> Call your mom? >> Yeah, >> we can give you a phone call. Yeah, >> on my phone. >> Yep, you can do that. Let's go this way. Okay, if you want to just come over here. >> Meanwhile, another woman was still inside the store and was reportedly with the suspect who had been arrested earlier. Due to her connection to the incident, the officer asked her to leave the store at the request of the staff. >> Walgreens inside. >> Why is that, sir? I just barely walked in. >> Cuz they believe that you're shopping. So, >> no, sir. You can check me >> with all your respect. Yeah, I like to be checked and I like to speak to a supervisor because I come in here frequently. >> Yeah, go ahead. >> Okay. Yeah, I like to speak to supervisor. I come in here every night. I don't know what the hell's going on. >> Yes. >> For what? >> Because I am not a peep. I am not chocolate. We're not going to call a supervisor. >> Okay. Well, I'm not a shopkeeper. I'm not >> Okay. Well, they have the right to refuse anybody. >> Okay. Well, they didn't even speak to me. So, that's just it. They didn't even approach me. >> Does it matter? They can call anybody. >> They can trespass. >> Why are you speaking to me like that? I >> Because you're I'm very upset. I'm hurt. I'm disappointed. I shop here all the time. >> And I'm I'm trying to make you understand that they can trespass anybody. It's private property. >> But they didn't even speak to me. That's just it. >> Okay. But they just don't have nice to be a post and said, "Excuse me, ma'am. I you can see that the lady with the short hair I always come in here. >> Well, they don't want you here anymore. >> Well, I didn't even know that. If I would have known that, then I would have >> that. Well, that's why we're making >> Okay. Well, if I would have known that, sir, we would have avoided all this. We're letting you know. >> Okay. And your name is >> Loya. >> Loya. >> Mhm. >> Okay. And I need a name of supervis. To be sure, the officer also checked the items she was carrying. But she still appeared upset about what was happening even after being trespassed from the store. >> So, I'm going have to change my pharmacy now. Is that the way it goes? >> Probably will at least not this morning. You can always try the other way. >> This is embarrassing. I've been trespassing. All right. We'll we'll talk here in a minute. See exactly what they want. Cool. >> Okay. Who wants down? >> Where? >> Did you the the names in here? How they want them? >> They're the ones who are in charge of property records. I don't see. >> Yes, sir. >> If you have issues, you can always get in touch with their corporate. >> It's just it's just sad and embarrassing to trespass. I have a story that I shop at all the time. I'm sorry. >> Okay, >> that'll be okay. >> I know. I know. Sam just having a bad anxiety. >> Both women were arrested and taken to the police station for processing. The woman was charged with forgery, trespassing, and shoplifting. A situation can become much more serious when additional offenses or an active warrant come into play. Staying calm and cooperating with officers can help prevent things from escalating further. Next, this woman thought that fleeing back home could help her escape the consequences of her theft. >> Please, I'm feeling very pressured. Just give me two seconds. I don't know why where I'm standing makes me so uncomfortable. Can anyone else come, please? >> Can the back? On the 26th of August 2026, officers received a call from a liquor store reporting that a woman had left with $300 worth of merchandise without paying. Through their investigation, officers located the suspect's home. Let's see how she reacted to this. >> Where exactly? Hello, Taylor. >> Hi, I'm Also March with Crystal Lake. Just let you know where to body camera. >> Go, go, go. >> So, obviously we talked on the phone. >> Yeah, I'm trying to put my daughter down and she's >> had a rough day. She's been sick. >> Okay. Well, what happened at Vinny's today? You were kind of telling me on the phone. >> Yeah, I lost one of my bridesmaids. I lost a photographer. I'm getting married next weekend and everything is kind of going crazy right now. >> I feel like I was in the middle of trying to deal with this and a million things when you called me. >> Um, and I asked you to hold and she's screaming at me and then I'm keep getting call call. So, it seems a little aggressive and it's kind of sent me into like a panic kind of state. So that's why I'm a little bit freaking out and scared that my dogs >> are barking about pounding down on my door. >> Well, you knew I was trying to get a hold of you, so I just figured you were ghosting me. >> I I was trying to take care of my daughter who is going through an extreme sleep aggression and very >> I get and I get that. Trust me, I have a four-year-old and I had to deal with that. But what happened at Benny's with those unpaid bottles? >> I He pointed out the bottle and I said, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I have I explained to him right then and there. I have a million things going on. I just lost the bridesmaid and then he I put it on the counter and I paid for it. Like I paid for like what it was like four or five bottles all at the same time. >> You paid for two plus the one that was under your stroller. You have three more that you didn't pay for under your stroller. So why did you pay for those? >> Why didn't I or why don't I? >> Why didn't you? It's all on camera. >> Her story seemed to raise more questions for the officer, but what stood out was how calm she remained. That changed when the officer pointed out details she could no longer deny. >> Listen, hang on. Listen, the Taylor on video that you got two bottles from the lock shelf that they brought over. Clear as day on video. And then they also saw the one that was in the stroller that you did pay for that obviously that was the guy had to mention that to you. There's also three other bottles that you left intentionally underneath the stroller. That is a Don Julio and Njo. >> It was not intentional. Don't do something. It's John and Haley and two bottles of whistle paint. It was an accident. >> And I don't believe you one bit. I'm going to be I'm being honest with you. I just don't believe >> doing this. >> I do not have any prior >> You have two prior That's why I don't believe you. I'm just being honest with you. You're being honest with me and I'm being honest with you. >> Well, I don't believe that I have any priors because I have >> You have two prior incidents at Benny's that they never reported to us, but they have two prior internal incidents with you. Okay. >> Okay. >> So, I'm just being honest with you. >> Okay. Well, I'm being honest that I don't believe that because this is not who I am. This is not what I do. >> That's fine. You could be honest and I like that. Thank you. >> No, it's not. I paid for that. They scanned it. They went behind the counter. >> This one you did not pay for. It's on the sheet. >> I did pay for that. >> But the other No, there's You had um six total bottles that you paid for and then three are unaccounted. This Don Julio and they don't like two bottles of Whistle Pig. >> They're the ones who handed that one. Although the woman still refused to accept the facts, the officers had to inform her of their decision, which caused her to begin panicking. >> Okay. So, um, here's what I'm going to do. I am, uh, you're not free to leave. You're being detained, obviously, for an investigation here. So, you're, um, not going to go anywhere right now, okay? Um, you're either going to come with me to the police station or you're going to spend the night in county jail or you're going to get released and be brought back, okay? or just get released from our police stations. You're going to get charged with retail theft. >> Okay, just being honest with you again. It's over $300, which is a felony amount. I have to call the state attorney's office and get approval to get a felony charge against you. So, I'm going to do all that right now. So, just to get that all taken care of. Okay, sound good. >> As I told you, I wasn't intentionally. And I'm going to tell that I have a lot going on with my being aggressive. I'm going to tell that all to the state's office that makes the decision whether to charge you with the felony or not. I can't make that decision. They have to make that decision. Okay? The fact that there's two prior incidents for the for the same for the same mo is why this is happening right now. Okay? You made a mistake today and you're going to deal with those consequences in court. Okay? As simple as to it. All right? And >> there's no option for I mean like I don't even have the receipt. I don't like to touch receipts. So there's not even an option. just take >> no past all that. Okay. So, you're going to have to step out here and you're going to hang out with this officer until I make a call. >> I don't want to put you in handcuffs right now. I could do that and just take you straight to the police station. I could do that if you want and you there's a good chance that you could just be processed and released back today. >> I have to make a call. I don't get her to >> I need some water. >> Take a breath. Okay. There's a good airflow right there. Come over here. >> We had a female officer that was here. >> She had to leave. She come on her way back. >> Suddenly, the woman's panic began to make things more difficult as her behavior appeared to delay the investigation from moving forward. >> Some good air flow. I'll help you breathe. Trust me, there's some airflow right where the officer standing. >> Hold on, please. I'm feeling very pressured. Just give me two seconds. I don't know why where I'm standing makes that please. Just Okay. Can I have you leave? >> Unfortunately, I can't. >> No, >> unfortunately. Okay, then I would like you to know that you are going to leave my premise once I'm also out of it. I'm feeling so cornered right now. >> But we can't let you back. We can't let you back in the garage without >> sit on the front scoop. I'll sit around in the front. >> You want to lean against your car? >> Match cars in the front. You want to take those or >> I want I'm going to take them to >> Okay. I don't know. Please just go do your thing and I will figure it out with my unit right here. Okay. Because I feel like this is the aggressive part of the situation. So, >> let's go over to that front door. >> Is that where you're going to go? >> Yeah, if you can just go in. >> I'm going to go in front. Thanks. >> You guys want to hang out? >> Stop screaming. >> Okay. >> The bond court is at like 1:30 in the afternoon, so you'll get phone calls from the county jail. >> No, please. >> So, Taylor, what I need you to do, though, >> I didn't do it. I mean, >> Taylor, listen. >> I didn't do it. >> Taylor, listen. I did. [laughter] >> Take a breath. Take the time recording. >> Can I have you please step back? >> I feel uncomfortable. He makes me feel uncomfortable. >> Okay, Taylor. We're taking this one step at a time. Okay, we got to get through this. We're going to get through this. We're going to get to your wedding this weekend. So, the first thing that we need to do is we're going to stand up and we're going to walk to his car and we're going to take this one step at a time. >> Suddenly, the offender became the one seeking comfort. But continuing like this only prolonged the process and prevented the arrest from moving forward. Even getting her into the police car became another struggle. >> So, I'm sorry we got off on the wrong foot. I don't feel good today. So, maybe that's why my demeanor is a little off and I'm very hot and uncomfortable, but I'm not going to hurt you. Okay? So, I I don't want you to get that feeling that I'm going to make. >> Okay. And and that's fine, but I'm trying to explain to you. Okay. >> You've been sympathetic. It seems like you've been trying to >> I'm trying to explain I just I'm trying to explain situation >> and I like I told you I'm not feeling good today and I'm hot. cranky and I and apologies for how I reacted, but I'm just trying to get to the point here. I've been on this too long. These officer have something going on, okay? Because we have a process we have to get through. So, you're going to sit in the back seat here. There's a case between me and you. There's cameras on. It's recording audio. It's recording video, okay? And we're going to have a female and officer, me at the PD, cuz I always have two officers with me. It's one's going to be a female. Okay? I'm just letting you know that I did what I had to do because I did my job and the state already made the decision, not me. I couldn't make that decision without the state's attorney. So, I'm letting you know that I reviewed video. I reviewed all the facts and that's just what it is right now. Right now, we're going to put you in handcuffs. You're going to go in the back of my car. Okay. >> I have to have the handcuffs. They're running away anyway. >> You have to go in handcuffy. We have the same policy. >> Yeah. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about that cuz I have a job and I want to keep my job. Okay. >> You do it then. >> You might have to turn around. >> Oh, I have to turn around. >> Yes. Okay. >> See, I mean, you >> the handcuffs have to go behind your back. >> This is I can't I can't make that call. Okay. >> I know, but I can put them on you. So, here, let's honestly, the faster we get >> so uncomfortable. He's trying to make it as comfortable as possible. >> No, I put we put everyone hands behind their back. >> In the end, the woman was charged with felony retail theft, two misdemeanor retail theft counts, [music] and driving with a suspended license. She later pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor retail theft count while the remaining charges were dropped. Once officers have reviewed the evidence, delaying the process with excuses or repeated objections will not change what the evidence shows. Staying calm and cooperating does not erase the consequences, but escalating the situation can make an already difficult encounter even more complicated. Next, the situation became even worse when not one but two suspects were involved. Oh my god. >> Theft and a warrant. What is theft? >> On the 23rd of January 2024, police received a report of a theft at Walmart. The suspect was reportedly a man who tried to swap his shoes inside the store while concealing other merchandise. But he was not alone. Another man was reportedly acting as a lookout outside. The officer then approached him. What's going on him? >> I know it ain't me. All right. >> All right. Don't Don't Don't move. >> I just showed him. >> Show what? >> I got what I got in my pocket. >> All right. Let's uh let's turn the music off real quick. >> All right. >> What do you got in your pocket? >> Money, sir. My money. >> All right, bro. >> Give me a favor. Have a seat. >> All right. >> Oh, my mama. I don't need to steal, bro. All right. I swear to God, this [ __ ] piss me off. Where's your friend at? >> What? >> Where's your Where's your homeboy at? >> I just came up by my >> All right. Where's Where's your homeboy at? >> I don't know who you talking about. >> The one with the neon green shirt. >> I think he's still shopping. >> All right. You know they got you know they got cameras in here, right? So it's not I'm not asking I'm not asking you questions that I don't know the answer to. >> Bro, you seen what I got on me, bro. I don't need to steal. >> Sorry. I got background. >> Like look at this [ __ ] bro. Like bro, my mama. I don't need to steal nothing, bro. Like bro, this is paid for. You can't get this at Walmart. >> Talk about Except for >> this [ __ ] pissed me off, fam. >> You still inside the store? >> What? >> Your homeboy still inside the store? >> Yeah. >> All right, stand up. >> For what, bro? >> Stand up. >> For what? I didn't do nothing. >> Stand up. I'm telling you to stand up. >> For what? I didn't do nothing. >> I'm telling you to stand up, >> bro. I didn't do nothing, bro. I'm not standing. >> He became irritated when the officer approached and grew highly defensive, raising questions about what else he might have been hiding. Soon, the situation became even more tense. >> I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing, bro. I didn't do nothing, bro. >> I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing. I DIDN'T DO NOTHING. I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing, BRO. >> I DIDN'T DO NOTHING. I DIDN'T DO NOTHING. >> I didn't do nothing. NO. GET OUT OF my >> Stop. Stop. Oh my god. What the [ __ ] >> Oh my. >> Hand behind your back. >> You can't put your hand behind your back. >> Can I call my phone? >> Well, how you going to give me nothing? >> Let go of the phone. Hold the phone. >> I didn't take [ __ ] >> You got cuffs on you. >> We'll figure it out. Okay. >> YOU GOING TO FIGURE OUT IF I DO? >> We'll figure it out. You need to stop. This isn't helping anything. >> You got my hands. >> This isn't helping anything. >> Do you understand? Just put your hands behind your back and we'll figure it out. >> You all right? >> Not really, sir. >> All right. We'll get Let's get the cuffs on you and we'll adjust you. Okay. >> Can I get my phone? >> We'll get it for you. We'll get it for you. >> My people cuz this [ __ ] is crazy. >> Sit up. The question is, if he had done nothing wrong, why was he so resistant instead of cooperating? The situation became serious enough that backup officers had to be called in a minute. All right, but for now, you need to calm down. >> Oh my gosh, f. >> COME ON, BRO. WHAT are you doing? >> I SAW MY FATHER BEHIND MY BACK, MAN. >> LOOK, why are you using so much for relax? >> I'm not doing nothing. >> You're tensing up. LOOKING AT YOU. >> You're tensing up right now. >> But I'm looking at you though. >> That's fine. But you need to stop. >> But I ain't doing too much for nothing. Like, bro, I hate St. Cloud police, bro. Y'all don't want to do for nothing. >> Yeah. Keep going. >> I can't even brea. >> We got more units coming. >> You can breathe. If you're talking, you're breathing. >> If you're stop physically resisting his pockets, not yet. >> Hey, what's your name, man? >> I can't even breathe. >> What's your name? I can't breathe. >> What's your name, man? >> What you doing? GET OUT MY POCKET. >> GET OUT MY GET OUT MY POCKET. >> Oh my god. >> Police found no stolen items on him, but they did find a suspiciously large amount of cash in his bag. Meanwhile, the friend who was with him began to appear, bringing more details about what had happened. >> On the ground. >> On the ground. >> On the ground. >> Down. >> On the ground. on the ground. I got your back. I got your back. Hey, how you doing? How you doing? >> What happened? >> You know what happened? >> We're going to What happened? >> You know what happened? What do >> you mean, sir? >> What do you mean? >> Do you have anything on you that doesn't belong to you? >> What do you mean by that? Do you have anything on you that does not belong to you? >> Uh, no sir. I have my phone. Um, I was going to get my wallet and come back and pay for the food. So, you Okay, >> that's fine. >> Yeah. >> Huh? >> You got anything? >> What's your name? >> Sarnelius. >> Yes, sir. >> Just stay right. You got anything cocky in your socks? >> Got socks that belong to the store on you. Three pairs of >> said you got like three pairs of socks that belong to the store on you. >> Say it again, sir. >> I said that you have like three pairs of socks that belong to the store on you. >> Oh, three pairs of socks. >> Three, four. There's There's a couple pairs of socks that belong to the store. >> Yes, sir. >> On you, but you didn't pay for them. >> Oh, I I was paying for them. She said I can go to the car, grab my wallet, and come back and pay for >> I was watching you on camera, dog. You didn't do nothing. That's Darnelius. >> Darnelius? What? You know me from >> Yeah. >> No, I know exactly who this is. >> You got a warrant, huh? What? You >> stealing from your aunt? [screaming] >> Yeah. >> Your dad got picked up on it. >> Theft and a warrant. >> What is theft? >> Theft. You're stealing. >> What does that mean? >> That means you're stealing. Taking things don't belong to you. >> Oh, no. No, sir. I No, sir. I wasn't doing that. Are you taking I didn't I didn't take >> Okay. The signs pointed to a possible theft for illegal resale. At this point, the suspects began shifting the blame onto each other, but their stories were full of contradictions. >> He gave you the box, told you he had to pay for it. So, pretty cool. >> Okay. All right. >> Look at me. Look at >> all that money. He They can take a couple hundred. I'll take that. >> Okay. >> Well, do you know at which which one he paid for that? >> What happened, sir? >> Do you know at which register he paid for that? Okay. >> No. Okay. Well, why did why did he leave you? Why after he he paid for it, did you guys stay around? >> I'm so sorry. >> Okay. But look, did he steal anything? >> You want me to find out? >> Yes, ma'am. Cuz >> I believe that they did find stolen property on him. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> They found stolen property >> or property that's on >> the store. >> Okay. They pull him outside the store though, man. >> Mhm. Because the registers are pretty far back, right? I could sit and wait for you at the door, right? You know, the little holding area, right? Because then technically you still passed all points of sale at that point, right? I'm not saying you're a bad person. I think that it's a sillier error because you thought that as long as you weren't the one actively stealing, right? You don't get in trouble for it. >> Ma'am, I wasn't stealing though. >> No, I I'm hearing you. >> So, why am I being detained though? >> Why Why was I detained if I was 16? Well, >> because you're stealing. >> I was I received the show. >> You have a receipt? Yes, sir. >> Where? >> I have a good part for that. >> Remember that first half we talked about? >> Yeah. I'm bruised. My money's gone. >> Uh-huh. >> I'm about to go to jail for the dumbest charge I ever seen in my life and get burned right out. Like that's a waste of my money and waste of my damn time. >> I agree. >> I agree. But that's unfortunately where we're at at the moment. >> The officer found none of the socks the store was looking for among his belongings. It turned out he had been wearing them the whole time. >> No socks on yours, right? Put them on. >> Yes, sir. >> Right. So, take them off. >> I'm going to take socks off, sir. with with handcuffs on. How do I take out how am I going to take my socks off with handcuffs on, sir? >> Give me your foot. Give me a foot. Give me a foot. This one. >> All three of them. >> Yeah, I believe. >> So, I'm going to jail, >> I believe. So, yeah. >> For what? What's the charge for? >> Um, I believe it's still going to be under retail theft because you guys work together as a team. >> Ma'am. Ma'am, I didn't steal. Ma'am, please. Ma'am, I didn't steal nothing. They don't got no proof of me stealing no item. >> Jamar, first of all, remember one thing I asked. >> Just don't yell at me. >> I know, bro. It's just >> But and Jamar, didn't we just >> It aggravates me though. >> But didn't we just talk about how if you're the lookout? >> I wasn't no [ __ ] lookout. How the am I looking though? How am I looking out though? >> How am I looking out though? >> So when I watch the video, it's not going to be >> Let me Let me watch the video cuz I'm not looking out. I go to the bathroom. told me that yes, that's what it would look like. You already said >> that don't mean I'm looking out for him though. Like why would I be looking out for somebody stealing though? Like that's stupid as hell. And I'm going >> In the end, the 24year-old was adjudicated guilty of battery on a law enforcement officer and spent 196 days in county jail. >> [music] >> The 23-year-old shoplifter was adjudicated guilty of petty theft of $100 or more, but [music] less than $750 and spent $25 days in county jail. Trying to deny wrongdoing while resisting officers can turn a [music] theft investigation into even more serious consequences. Cooperating and telling the truth is always safer than making the situation worse. [music] Next, the woman would make her situation far worse with her own actions. >> Ma'am, you're being detained. >> I'm working. >> Look, look. What do you see? Look at my car. >> Come on. >> Sir, I'm sorry. I got stuck. Let Let me show you something. >> On the 23rd of February 2025, police received a report of a theft at Walmart. The suspect was reportedly fleeing the scene, but officers quickly located her and the situation immediately began to escalate. >> What happened? The lady with the rash recipe was not >> Come on. Come over HERE WITH ME. >> OKAY, BUT WAIT. Can I put the mail in? >> Yeah. Put it on top of the car. Just don't go in the car, man. I just got a >> Ma'am, you're ma'am. Can you look at me? >> I'll take away. >> Stand up. >> Sir, give me a second. Look, man. >> I had surgery. >> I had surgery. >> Her actions had already led to a resisting arrest charge, something she seemed unaware of. Still convinced she was innocent, she denied every accusation despite the officer repeatedly trying to explain the situation. >> We don't want you. >> I understand that. I asked you to stop. I asked you to get out of the vehicle. >> And you attempted to get in the vehicle and take off for me. >> No, I did not. I said to get in the vehicle. >> You're going to tell me. >> No worries. It's okay. >> Can I show you? >> I tried. I tried to tell you. >> I tried to show you something. >> Told you. Very nice. >> Can I show you something? >> Hotel Alpha. last name. Can you walk me through the car? Cuz you're all free. Just walk me. Just stay here. >> Does she have anything on her person? >> Complete a search and do one thing at a time. >> At this [snorts] point, the officer returned to the original reason for the stop. She continued denying the allegations, but her explanations were becoming increasingly hard to believe. >> You don't have to. >> You don't have to. >> You don't need your medication. My ex-wife is dead. Her name is Ernestine Evans. Is this her? >> Yes. She passed away. >> You can do Walmart. Figure out what she took. Okay. So, ma'am, >> listen. First of all, >> you're accused of shoplifting from Walmart. Okay. >> Did you take anything without paying for it? >> No, sir. >> Okay. >> No, sir. Change the clock. >> Listen, you have the right to be silent. Anything you say you do can be held against you in court. You have a right to an attorney. If you can't afford any attorney, what can be presented to you by the court? Do you understand your right side? >> All right. >> Yes, I do. Did she obstruct your >> I did. >> Okay, listen. At this point, >> I wasn't trying to I was trying to show I was trying to lean back to show you my surgery. >> I got staples and stuff all the way around the car, right? And then you tried to run to get into the car. >> No, I tried to run to open the door because it wasn't opening. So, I wouldn't have did that. I wouldn't have did that. I swear to you, I wouldn't get out of the car. >> You can look in the car, sir. And then you had to pull you out, right? >> No. In the front seat. Yes. >> Okay. So, you said that you took a large shopping cart full of stuff from the store without paying. >> I never even left the store. Where? Can you please check the trunk? >> I hope you left the store cuz otherwise you still be in there. So, you definitely left the store somewhere. >> Oh, yeah. But with nothing. Look in the trunk. >> Okay. >> I don't have anything. >> The shopping cart full of items. Did you leave that outside in the parking lot? >> No. >> Okay. Where did you leave that? right there at the door because I had to come back cuz the girl Michelle Teller, which is my coworker, she she was coming in. The dog was in the car. You can't leave an animal. I can't believe they take a deep breath. Take a deep breath. >> What happened? Did they tell you did they tell you to stop and leave the items? >> No, I left items when I was walking out the, you know, the double doors. >> And she said, >> "Wait, you stole that stuff?" I said, "How?" I never even left the store. I said, "The receipt that they have is from Garfield." >> To deny her resistance, she began offering reasons that seemed more like excuses made up on the spot. The more she explained, the clearer her defiant attitude became >> um >> I'm looking for my if you can look and >> your driver's license. >> Look in that wallet. >> Just stay here. Stay on the car for me. Okay. >> Okay. Yeah. I'm not going to move. It's a uh It should be a phone in there. >> So, sorry. A phone. Claudia. >> All right. One word. >> One word. >> All right. >> And your date of birth? >> According [snorts] to the report, the woman had not actually left the store with any merchandise, but she did pass the final point of sale without paying for anything. That violated the store's policy. Yet, that was not what concerned her most at this moment. This is what February. >> Go ahead. >> And who bought the car? >> Who bought the car? >> I did. I sent somebody because I couldn't drive because I had my um I had to >> I had to send >> I had to send um my paperwork in for a new registration. So, and it was snowing. I can't drive in the snow. >> Those plates came with my car? >> Yes. Yes, they did. >> Okay. >> And they came with the car. They You listen. 60 days. >> Say that again. >> They gave me 60 days. >> Who did? >> The people that own that p that we bought the car from. >> Okay. >> Yeah. They gave me 60 days to return. >> Okay. >> All right. So, listen. Um, we're going to have either animal control or the Humane Animal Society uh take custody of the dog right now. >> Can Can do that. I'm Can I >> No, it's not going to be doesn't mean that we're keeping the dog from you or anything like that. It just means the dog is going to be held safely in one of those two. So, it's it's your personal effect. >> Cancer. >> What started as a simple theft investigation was becoming much more complicated. Yet, the woman still showed no sense of guilt. Instead, she began innocently asking questions that seemed to lead nowhere. >> You're under arrest for shopping. >> But, are they keeping me? They sending me to jail when when I'm on under arrest, right? >> What What happens? >> We'll we'll we'll take you back, ma'am. We're going to take you back to headquarters or our headquarters and we'll get that sorted out. Okay. >> What? I go to jail, prison. >> Uh, well, as of right now, we're not doing any of that. >> So, we just got to go back to headquarters. We got to take care of you, get you processed. Okay. >> All right. Cuz I didn't God knows I didn't do nothing. >> Well, we have you on camera, so >> Okay. Okay. >> Okay. But I didn't leave out no store with anything. In the end, Tanisha Travis Sims was charged with shoplifting, obstructing the administration of law, resisting arrest, and possession of stolen credit cards. Denying the facts does not make the consequences disappear. When officers are trying to explain the situation, resisting or refusing to cooperate can turn a simple investigation into much more serious charges. Next, meet a woman who took deception to another level. >> I don't have any money on my card. Like, I don't know what you guys are talking about. I have 60 cents. so much. I'm literally putting my hands behind. Where's my phone at? >> On the 22nd of March 2023, police received a report from an airport about a woman who had used a bar services without paying. Officers quickly arrived and an employee gave them an account of what had happened. >> So, I'm not 100% on that, but they said she did. >> Yeah, cuz we I think they checked the cameras over by 18 and they said probably >> probably. Go. >> This is the restroom. She said she went to look for her card for in first and she had a Duncan coffee. So I said, "Dun's that way. Check the bathroom over there and she had hidden her behind the wall and tried to pull the old okie do and still ran this way anyway." So she wasn't ever looking for a card when she was >> she was drinking what she had on there. To my knowledge, she was still pretty sober walking in. asked the bartend, you know, >> she understood the world to say that she was looking for her and this is where she looked for it >> and obviously it wasn't there. >> She said she was looking for a card. >> Uh said she lost her card in transit and her family thought she left it in the restroom, but what she had done actually was try to flirt with the man in the car. I think he was going to pay that tab for her and he was having no part. But if Steve see Steve hair tan, you can probably try to talk to her. But uh I believe that is her and changed clothes right there. That's the blue bag. That's her. >> Ma'am. >> The woman was suspected of going into the bathroom to change clothes and alter her appearance. It seemed that was exactly what she intended as she began denying the officer's suspicions. >> Were you at this restaurant over here? >> No. >> Bathroom. >> Okay. Well, let me >> Did you change pair of clothes from that? >> No. >> So, you weren't at this restaurant over here? >> No. >> No. >> So, you weren't at this restaurant over here? I just came out of the bathroom. >> Okay. Okay. 15 minutes ago you weren't at the restaurant. 20 minutes ago >> I literally manager over there specifically pointed at you saying >> that looks like curly [ __ ] hair. shoes match the blue bag that is nothing that looks like4 Let's see. It's blue. >> I don't I don't know where the station >> the restaurant 20 minutes ago. >> I literally just got here. >> The manager over there specifically pointed at you saying >> that looks like curly [ __ ] hair. She was also believed to have changed her hairstyle, but the more questions the officers asked, the more frustrated she became, and her attitude grew increasingly tense. >> So, you changed your hair? >> I literally just got here. >> Did you? >> Yes. >> Okay. You're being detained right now. >> By who? >> By the police. >> You understand? >> Y'all look like security to me. Oh, >> really? >> I don't know, Tyler. Okay. >> These mother >> is this her? >> Positive ID. Absolutely. Change clothes in the bathroom. That is absolutely. >> Okay. >> I don't know who this is. >> So, how much you had to drink today? >> Drink alcohol. >> I've had I've drank today. I drank before I got here. >> How much? >> That doesn't matter to you, does it? Cuz I'm not driving. >> Has nothing to do with the circumstance right now. >> Asking me how much I drink. Did you know these babe? These guys are literally trying to [ __ ] you with me. >> Well, there's good reason for it. Okay, you walked out on your tab at the bar over there and it's called theft of service right now. >> Okay. So, you not said I heard something say let it go. >> Okay. You want to pay your bill? What are you talking about, Mr. Thomas? So, >> what do you want her to do? What's your You want to press charges or do you want to pay her bill? >> If she's can pay her bill, we're good. We're settled. If she's going to refuse to pay her bill even after the attitude, I would still let that go. >> You would still let it go. >> I'd let it go. >> So, I just heard someone say, "Let it go." >> Okay. You want to pay your bill? What are you talking about, Mr. Thomas? It's >> Psych. >> Well, I hear I see Thomas or something. >> I don't think so. >> The bar gave her a chance to pay and have the matter dropped, but unfortunately, she couldn't afford it either, which she admitted shortly after. >> Another people at the restaurant. >> Look, I don't have any money on my card. Like, I don't know what you guys are talking about. I have 60 cents. Literally 60. They're different shoes, right? Why are you guys bothering me? >> Do you have a driver's license? >> I do. >> Okay. I would like to see it, please. >> They can't take They're not police. They security. >> We are police. >> Police on my army. You see police? Police. You >> see how look cool? I have no idea what you guys are talking about. That >> jacket looks familiar. >> That jacket? >> No, that this little white sweater looks exactly like the one we just showed the picture of you. >> It was a tank top and shorts. >> Okay, >> cuz you can't tell women's clothes cuz [ __ ] can't tell women's clothes. >> You can't tell, [ __ ] Shut the up here, >> Tyler. I don't have any. I don't know what the they want from me. >> The driver's license is what we asked for. >> So, anyways, I'm just going to go to my plane. >> We're detained right now. We're not walk away. >> I'm nothere. >> At this [snorts] point, although she still claimed she had never been to the bar, the woman still walked straight there without hesitation to try to pay. Even so, things didn't go smoothly. >> Can you put a number in? You love Apple Pay. >> No, it's his card. It's my husband's card that's on the phone right now. >> Can you Can you show me your card number? What do you have on your card? >> Send me your card number. >> Her actions did nothing to resolve the situation and only dragged things out, leaving the officers with little choice but to end it with an arrest. >> I'm not imposter. You haven't taken my >> Tyler. They're arresting me. >> Can I Tyler? >> Stop. I'm not doing anything. I'm not doing anything. No, I'm not. I'm literally putting my hands behind. >> Where's my phone at? >> I'm literally not doing anything. >> I didn't pay tab. We read alcohol. >> I drank. I literally admitted that I'm 24. I can drink. Where's my phone at? >> It's over here. We're going to have to take everything with us. >> How long is this going to take? >> Huh? >> Minimum of 4 hours. >> See, sir, I can I can pay whatever you guys need. I'm trying to get it figured out. >> Sir, I haven't given you guys any trouble. Please. No, I can't. Hold on. Can I I said I I drank alcohol. Can I please get it paid? >> Please. >> I can pay. >> You didn't have any money in the car. >> The woman was charged with theft of service. When given a chance to resolve a situation, making excuses and delaying the process can only make things worse. Cooperation could have prevented a Sim. Next, this woman only made things worse with her own actions. >> No. Hey, >> stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. >> Or people forcing you out. >> You said that I could go. He was letting you out. >> On the 20th of June, 2023, officers were dispatched after receiving a report of a shoplifting suspect who had fled the scene. The search began immediately, but she had hidden in an unexpected place. Hey there, Mount Vernon. Police, stop right there. Stop. She's right here. Hey, what are you doing? Stop. No. Okay. Stop. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Hey. Hey. Stop. >> Stop listening. Who are you? Who are you? >> I'm an officer of the Mount Alberta Police Department. >> You scared me. I thought you were a stranger. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Work your casket. I'm struggling with her behind the door. Stop and relax. Relax. Are you down? Just remain calm. >> Stop. >> That's not remaining calm. Stop it. >> Stop. >> I was just being more comfortable >> right now. You're going to be under arrest for resisting if you don't stop. >> I don't have any. >> I told you you're being detained. Okay. >> For what? >> Can you grab hold of her arm? >> I got cups. I don't have part. >> As if she thought she could stay hidden, the woman still tried to crawl away after being spotted, but she had no idea the officer already knew her. >> That girl that refused to ID herself from us >> uh last summer. Remember her? >> No, >> she was on uh Coulson. >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. >> We never IDed her. >> Yeah. >> Hey, just stay still. Okay. >> Stop reaching. I got a blob up here to go quick. I'll help you out. >> I don't feel steal any weapons yet. >> It sounds like they got PC for theft in there. >> No, we have PC for theft, too. >> Okay. >> What do you think? I don't have >> What's your name? >> What? >> I can't hear you. >> All right, go ahead and stand up. You're under arrest. A full park Chad. >> I'll follow up with the store here one. >> This car is closest. >> Uh maybe mine right over here. >> Okay. >> You don't want to go through the jungle. That's what I just did. >> Yeah, that's why I'm all wet. >> I'm so uh walk with her. I'm going to check it. >> I checked. I didn't see anything. But >> thank you. Okay, have a seat there for me real quick. Where >> was this found? That was honored. >> Oh, perfect. >> After arresting the woman, the officers explained why she was being taken into custody, but judging by her attitude, she still didn't seem to care. >> They have really good cameras over there. Is it going to show them or is it going to show you putting a hat underneath your shirt? >> No. Okay. What were you doing over there? >> I was looking for scissors. They said they didn't have any, and I was looking for extra clothes cuz it was getting kind of cold, >> but I already had what they had, so I didn't need any. >> Do you have any method of payment? >> Um, yeah, I have money. >> Where? >> It is in my left pocket of my jacket. >> This jacket? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Left pocket. So, can you face that way? >> Do you have ID on you at all? >> Um, no. I have no ID on you. >> No ID on you. Okay. And your name was what again? >> Hannah. >> Anna Hiller. >> Is that what you said? >> Yeah. >> H I L L E R. >> Yeah. >> And Hannah. >> Hannah. >> Hannah. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What exactly were you going to buy with a dollar? >> A dollar? >> That's all that's in here is $1. >> Oh, I should have had more money stuff. was I asked somebody for a cigarette at the store. >> What's your date of birth? >> It is December 27th, 1991. >> 122791. >> Okay. >> She cooperated by providing her information, but things quickly became suspicious when her answers started to contradict each other. >> I am 20 289. >> And what year were you born in? >> 1991. >> Okay. So, if you were born in 1991, you'd be at least 31 years old. >> 1991? No, I wouldn't. >> Yes, you would. It's currently 2023. You'd be at least 31 years old. >> Oh, well, I've been telling the guys I was younger, so I don't even know. >> All right, listen to me. If you give me a fake name and a fake date of birth again, >> I'm going to charge you with a felony for criminal impersonation. >> I didn't give you a fake name. >> Okay, so your your date of birth is 1227 1991. >> Yes. And how do you spell your first name? >> A N A. >> A N A. And your middle initial? >> O. >> O. >> Yeah. >> O. Like octopus. >> No. L. >> L. So Anna L. How do you spell your last name? >> Um. H I L L E R. >> Okay. Stand. Just stay here for a second. The officers still couldn't find her information in the system, leaving them unsure whether she genuinely couldn't remember or was hiding something. They gave her another chance to provide the truth. >> Eer pillar. Anna. How you spell Anna? >> A N A. >> What's your middle initial? >> L. >> L. What's your date of birth? >> It is December 27th, 1992. >> December 27th. You sure about that? Cuz even if I ran that, I would get a mere kid. Have you ever been arrested before? >> Um, it could. I think it's 1991. >> You think it's 91? >> Yeah. >> Have you ever been arrested before? >> I've never been arrested. >> Have you ever been contacted by law enforcement before? >> Never. >> You've never been contacted by law enforcement? >> Never. >> What state are you from? >> Washington. >> You've always lived in Washington? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Have you ever got any sort of government assistance in any way? >> Um, no. It's DSHS. A little >> DSHS stuff. Okay. >> Do you know your social security number? Um, yeah, but I don't know if I won't see for a while. >> So, you don't know. Do you see the problem where we're at? Like, if you just got some chippy warrant or something. >> I don't have a warrant. >> Okay. I mean, at this point, since we can't identify you, you're going to go to jail. >> Well, they should be able to identify me. 1991 is when I was born, but I didn't know if it was '92. I didn't know if I forgotten that long or not. It's been a long time since I've had to tell anybody my age. They all just think I'm 18 cuz I'm so cute and small cuz I'm tiny. >> The woman was then taken to the police station where she made things difficult for the officers once again. She refused to get out of the car, seemingly unable to accept the outcome. >> Step out of the car. >> Drop me off for trespassing. >> No, you're under arrest. You're getting booked into the jail. Step out of the car. >> That doesn't make sense to me cuz you told me it's just trespassing and it should be just released. No, I gave you a trespass admonishment for the place you just stole from. And I told you you were under arrest for theft, obstruction, and resisting. >> You didn't tell me I was being arrested for theft. And I'm not arrested for that. >> Well, I've told you several times during this conversation then. So, get out of the car. >> You haven't told me that. >> Here's the deal. If you don't get out of the car, we're going to have to force you out of the car. >> Why can't you just drop me off and give me >> I'm not doing that. >> But you already said that. >> We can't identify you. You keep lying about who you are and your date of birth and your age. I told you >> when we can't identify you >> and you're under arrest, you go to jail. >> You can identify You did identify me. >> I have not been able to positively identify you. >> I just told you. What? Wait. >> I don't believe what you're telling me because none of it's coming back to an actual person. >> It did come back as an actual person. You found it in your computer. >> No, I did not. >> Yes, you did. >> I promise you. >> Listen. >> You did. You found me in the computer because you said >> you're going to have to get out of my car one way or the other. Do you want to do it under your own power? >> There is an S. >> Listen to me. You're going to have to get out of my car one way or the other. >> You said no. There isn't it. Stop. That's why. >> Stop. Stop. >> Do you want to get out of the car under your own power or do you want people to force you out of the car? >> I don't want to get out of the car. I want >> Well, you don't have a choice. >> Wait, you just said I could go. >> In the end, the woman was charged with theft, obstruction, and resisting. The suspect was actually one of the store's own employees who allegedly took advantage of his position to take multiple items out of the store. But when officers arrived, he confidently insisted he was innocent and confronted the very officers investigating him. >> Okay. >> They I told him I wasn't even going nowhere until I figured out what was going on. So I'm still here. So I'm making sure nothing wrong. So I didn't >> what what exactly is going is >> they said >> going on >> he said there's multiple incidents that it was like on the cash res up stuff and stuff not getting mug up and stuff being stole stuff like that pretty much that's what he said. So I told him with me being here I'm not leaving until I get the full understanding because I don't feel like I did nothing wrong. >> Okay. >> I never worked as register up here. It's my first time up here. I had plenty of mistakes. Couple people to fix them. But like now he's saying that I walked out with stuff that is stolen and like it was few few ACs that was broken that I that was damaged out and stuff like that. That that's what me and him was just talking about. >> But just like I said, I'm not going to empty him on anything. But just like he said, if it's going to the dumpster, he has nothing to do with it. I kept but it's not it's not stealing. You know what I'm saying? If you figured that was still >> Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Once they go into damage for the system of the store. >> I did that and I did that. >> Right. What? Then they're damaged. So the cords are cut. It's severed. >> See, they never even said that. They never say that. >> But whatever. There's something done to them where it's not going to be. >> Yeah. It wasn't working at all. It was water dripping. >> But you after the dumpster I can't control. >> Right. Right. Right. That's >> Let me grab your information. Explain to me what >> that's why I had >> what they're saying you did and then [clears throat] you tell me what what you did. >> I just did. >> I know. >> I just did. It was He said it was um He said it was people multiple people come to my line and that a lot of stuff wasn't getting rung up or candy bar was getting rung up and like it was miscommunications on certain hands and just like I say I never worked cash register in any other place. So, like it may have been a conversation that I may have got through or something like that, but I don't feel like I was stunning anything. >> He admitted taking the items out of the store, but he did not consider it theft because they were all merchandise that was supposed to be destroyed. And that same confidence remained even when he confronted the store manager. >> What's the policy on that? Are they >> They're not eligible for merch are supposed to be damaged and discarded, destroyed to a point where it can't be taken by anyone. That's our policy. See, and and my understanding what that is, that was never explained to me. When [music] he just said when it's damaged out, take it to the back. That's all my understanding was. I never was told to cut no cords or anything. Just like he explained to you outside, which he said I didn't tell him that the cords wasn't cut. I didn't know that. >> I don't need to speak, but there's an interesting question. They're brand new. They weren't returned. I have cross documents. I'm sure they weren't returned. They were taken directly from a sales pallet up front. Yeah, they were sitting up for sale by somebody called me up front to grab. >> What you're saying is I'm talking about the other air conditioners. >> I'm not going to debate. When he asked me information, I'll give everything just as Did you just ask me about the air conditioners that were supposed to be in return? Right. >> I asked you about the ones that were damaged and broken. >> Those two. Then the ones that was called in for me to carry out for someone. I came up to the front. They told me to grab it and take it out for them. Half the people that came and got them was in wheelchairs. So, I don't know. Y'all never told me to check a receipt or anything like that. If a person called me over the mic and said, "A person need help carrying this out, keep your level." That's that's all I do. That's exactly what I did. So, if if I'm wrong for that, I take responsibility for that. >> But what was even more shocking was that this was not a one-time incident. And even the short time he had been working there made the situation even more serious. >> So, he's been employed here since the 23rd of June. So, he's only been here 4 weeks. So um over the course of 4 weeks I have 23 video incidents where he he takes out either by walking out himself bagging up merchandise himself or having customers come through the line where he would scan a 50 cent candy bar in lie of an air conditioner or a large pillow or something with value charge them $300 or $4 and walk out with $2 $300 of merchandise. The total that we could prove on video was $3,14 over the last 4 weeks. The day in question the air conditioners are brand new. There's one female involved that's typically here every time. He says that he doesn't know who he is. I believe it's his wife. >> Well, either way, this the same lady he bag of merchandise up for, gives her >> walks out with with air conditioners. And this is all happened. The biggest hit was on the I think it was Saturday the 19th. There was almost $1,100 in merchandise that he walked out of the door that he selected from the sales floor, bagged up, and eventually walked out himself in addition to just bagging up for customers. on video it's unclear so I'm not gonna say it but it looks like he was taking cash from customers and that's why they were just bagging up merchandise I said I'm not but that's he was just bagging the merchandise walk out he' actually physically walk out to the cars with them so >> because I'm helping them take they got bags of stuff why would I not help them take a lot >> typically as a cashier you're responsible for scanning merchandise and charging them only two of us working >> so either way it's old people which do make the old people >> is there is there two Is there two people on a cash >> there's only two of Yeah, there's two there's two there's two of us and it's in the afternoon. There's nobody else working. Mike >> 23 incidents in just 4 weeks of working there with $3,000 in losses. Clearly, he must have had a motive from the beginning. And it was very possible that there was an organized operation behind it with other people the officers still needed to investigate. >> I'm going to ask you this. Who is the person in the videos? >> I have no clue. >> Who's the female? >> I have no be honest. I don't have no clue who that is. Now, if I knew, if y'all were to let me go home, I will tell you. I do not know who she >> If I let you go home, you'll tell me. >> I don't know. I said if I knew who she was, I will tell you. >> Look, man. I'm just being honest with you. When this is get when this is going to get transferred over to DB, >> what is DB? >> Detective Bureau. And Detective Bureau is going to look into this. They're going to watch the videos. Okay, >> let me ask you this question. >> And they'll they'll they'll eventually identify the woman. >> I'm going to ask you this question >> cuz they're going to come in here. They're going to interview him. They're going to interview all this. What's up? >> If I find out who she is, can I please go home? My son is in a hospital. >> Not today, man. Do you have any property here you would like to have somebody take? >> No, I have nothing here at the store. >> You've been caught. You've been caught on video doing this. I understand your son's in the hospital. I understand you want to make a call to your wife. I'm allowing you to make a call to your wife right now. >> Can you take me to the restroom, please? The rest. Can you take me Keep walking me to the restroom? I told the restroom. He walk me right here to the restroom. She's still on the phone. I'm not doing nothing funny. She's still on the phone. She cries. I'm not lying. Hello. >> I'm not lying. I'm serious. I'm not doing nothing funny, sir. >> All right. Do you mind if I talk to her? >> She She hysterical right now. >> Okay, I understand that. I'm just telling you. I'm going to ask her if she's the woman in the video. >> She's not the woman in the video. I can tell you that now. She's not the woman in the video. The man was then taken outside for the procedures before being transported to the police station, but he kept stalling, seemingly intending to do something suspicious. >> I'll let you finish your phone call. I don't have nothing, man. I don't have nothing. I absolutely >> Hey, I just got you. >> Well, you're fine. You're fine. I have no problems with that. >> All right, be good. Just turn around for me. >> All right. I apologize. I got to put you in c. Okay. I'm trying to be respectful here. >> I really got to go to jail. Seriously? For what? >> All right, you good? Just turn around for me. >> No, cuz I didn't do anything. >> Turn. Don't stop. >> I'm not doing nothing. I'm standing right here. I just want to talk. >> Okay. >> Can I please talk to him for one more second? >> Just turn around for me and place your hands behind your back as if you were one second. I'm not one second. Just one second. >> I've given you enough. >> Okay. I've been courteous. I've been want to ask him one question. Two seconds. Just come just talk >> after I put you in cuffs and put you in the car. >> I'm being detained for what? All right. >> I didn't do anything. I swear I didn't do nothing. >> So, you're being arrested for felony theft. >> Felony theft. >> Felony theft. Okay. If you could please turn around for me. All right. I'm being respectful. Please turn around for me. Place your place your hands behind. >> He clearly refused to accept the consequences of his own actions. Worse, what he did next was completely unexpected and it would lead to even more charges against him. >> All right. Stop. Stop. I'm not doing that. Stop. Stop. I'mma get up. I'm going get up. I'm going get up. I'm going get up. I'm going get up. I'mma get up. I'mma get up. Stop. I'mma get up. Lay me up. I'mma get up. I will get up. I will get up, sir. Huh? >> I will get up. I promise. I will get up. I will get up here. I will get up. Stop. Tell him to stop. You're dying. >> I got him. I'mma let him do it. >> Nope. >> No, we ain't talking no more, man. >> 101 in the car. >> You're about to go sit in the wagon. >> Go to me and you talk oneonone. >> I get it. >> You put me in the car and talk. You call an Avalanche. >> Yeah, I'm good. You >> call? I got one happening, aren't you? >> Sorry. Avalanche. >> There's one coming, man. You You need a band-aid. I think. >> In the end, the man was charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest, and obstructing justice. The case later confirmed that his main accomplice was also arrested on the same day. The lesson: [snorts] being trusted with a position does not give anyone the right to take advantage of it. Once that trust is abused repeatedly, trying to deny or resist the consequences can only make the situation worse. >> Right now, I didn't do nothing. >> Yeah. Get out. Have >> nothing to do with Don't rush me up. You're the only one. I'm the only one. I know. >> I don't know anything about anything else. >> On the 3rd of June, 2024, police stopped a man and a woman as they were trying to push a TV out of the store that was believed to have not been paid for. However, when they were approached, they already had excuses prepared for themselves. >> No, I need a seat. See, I got a receipt. That's not online receipt. That's That's not online receipt. >> That's online receipt. >> That's not online receipt. That's from gazy. That's supposed to have a serial number on there. Where serial number? >> That's what they That's what my mom said. >> That's not That's not an online receipt. So there two things. We going to pay for it or we going to take this or you guys going to come with us. That's not an online receipt. My receipts don't look like that. >> That's That's what she said to me. That's not an online receipt. I'm telling you. So, unless you want to get in trouble, that's not an online receipt. >> I don't care what they sent you, but that's not receipt. >> It's not online ID. >> You walked out with it. You have an ID. >> Do you have an ID? >> I don't have no ID, >> bro. >> How did you guys drive here? >> No, I just got My aunt dropped me off. Say she going to pick me up TV. So, send me this receipt online. >> Well, first off, you got an online TV. You pick it up from over there. I picked it up. You don't you don't pick it up from back there online. >> While the man tried to deny any wrongdoing, the woman ended up admitting it, but not with her words. [music] Instead, her sudden actions revealed far more than any confession could. Walmart 5 suits the apartment's on the home on the other side of the clear. We're over on this side. >> Oh, right here. Right here. Right here. Right here. >> Like an athlete, she ran as fast as she could, but she never escaped the police. Even more surprisingly, she began playing innocent with a new trick. >> Get out right now. >> I didn't do nothing. >> Yeah. Get out. >> Hey, has nothing to do with this. >> Get out. Don't Don't rush me up. I'll get down. I will get down. >> Put your hand behind your back. I will get down. Do it now. >> I will get down. >> My phone. My phone, man. I bro, I don't got no numbers IN MY PHONE. NO, THEM FOLKS. I DIDN'T HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. >> I just walked in the store with them and they told me to hold the car. >> Stand up. >> I doing all that running >> because I have kids. Well, that's your fault. >> I didn't know they had NONE OF THAT GOING ON. >> I'M GOING TO run her real quick. >> Okay. >> Please, please. >> Hey, you want to put her in her car? >> Yeah, that's fine. >> I'm mad at me. >> Well, now you definitely going to jail. >> No, please. I DIDN'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THAT. >> You want to check her real quick? >> No, please. >> Please. I didn't >> chill out. Bro, I DIDN'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS. >> You sound cuz you was running. >> NO, I JUST BRO, I knew you said I was going to get LOCKED UP. >> YOU SAID that I pushed it out. He homie told me to hold the car. I got scared. Please understand. >> She even tried to change her appearance by taking off some of her clothes and shifted the blame onto the man. None of it worked as the store's loss prevention team clearly established her involvement in the theft. When I was bringing that other TV back in, I saw him coming with another TV cuz he was with them and I said, "Let me see your receipt." He showed me the same picture the other guy trying to see him. >> Oh, they're trying to see him. We got >> All right. Her dumb ass jumped over the [laughter] the low line behind the Oliver. I'm like, "You ain't got nowhere to go." I'm like, "You hear the sirens? You might run for me, but the radio, you ain't going to run the radio." >> I'm real cuz one >> How much was that TV? >> Well, it's two of them, so they 428 a piece. >> Oh, perfect. So they basically working together. >> So but he took off though. >> Yeah, he took off. He he went he pretty much went on foot and went down that way. >> Which one? >> The one he was on foot. >> Hold on. You said which one with the red shorts where he go >> downstairs. I don't know where he got the black. The one him that I stopped. >> Yeah. >> He went out and walked down this way. >> Okay. Sorry. I'll take her. I mean I can only charge her for one TV though cuz she only came out with >> That's fine. Yeah. >> How much is the the single TV? Oh, what was it? 428. >> Back with the female suspect, she showed no concern for her crime or the consequences of running away. What she cared about instead was her own selfishness over being the only one arrested. >> I'm the only one. >> Only one right now. >> Huh? >> Sa Please don't me. >> Just calm down. I know you're upset. I understand that, but just wait a second. Okay, sit back. Why you so Why is your Why are you so wet? Did you fall in the water? >> Just sit back. >> I don't know nothing about you. >> Just sit back. >> Ambulance coming. So, sit back. >> We have an ambulance coming. So, just sit back and relax. >> I'm the only one. >> I'm the only one getting locked down. >> I don't know anything about anything else. Okay. >> But I do know that you need to sit back. >> Okay. I'm just trying to catch some air. >> I got plenty of air coming. You look right there. See that vent? Those vents are coming. >> Put your feet in. We'll close the door. >> The windows stay on your phone. I can hear you. >> During the ride to the police station, officers also discovered that this was not the woman's first offense. >> Yeah. Still misdemeaning us. You said you've been arrested in the past. >> Yes. >> For what? >> Um, >> same thing. Obstruction. >> Obstruction. Like that's running. >> Yeah. When you resist arrest pretty much. >> Yeah. I got um then I got um domestic violence. I know it's been a similar situation like this when I was like a um she's a 16 year old like 14 year old. She was around my age when I was 19. >> Mhm. and she went to Walmart and she start uh stealing in there and I didn't know anything about it and I went out and I walked out with her just by me walking out her head video. >> Are you on probation? >> No, because she's underage. >> Are you on probation? >> No. >> I just I don't understand why you ran. I mean, you you make >> went in there to give me some drugs. >> Okay, but you make you make it worse by running. >> What was even more telling was that the woman showed no real recognition of her wrongdoing. Even after [music] she had calmed down, she continued to arrogantly avoid taking responsibility for her earlier attempt to flee. >> You guys think about it as a when a criminal a criminal is the one that always when the white dude called me, he put me on the ground damn smash my face in the ground. All type of >> Well, if you run I said I'll get on the ground, bro. Don't you don't got to rough me up cuz I really fast out this bro for real. You not going to kill me out this get on the ground myself. Just cuz I ran. You done caught me now. I'm tired. >> No, you can kill me like that. And the officers out here killing people, bro. That's why I get scared. >> Nobody was trying to hear no black person. >> It's like I was I was sitting there pleading my pleading my case. Like I I don't know nothing. I don't know why this. >> Well, you said this was out here killing me, right? What are the reasons? What are the reasons? Cuz people aren't following simple commands. People are running. People are pulling weapons when they're not supposed to. And when you're running, you got to think about it. You just ran from us, right? I don't know if you got a gun or a knife, >> right? >> You know what I'm saying? So that's what you got to look at. I'm going to bring you down to the ground as soon as I can so that I can safely put cuffs on you and make the scene safe for me and you. >> She was charged with theft by shoplifting and obstruction. Running away and refusing to take responsibility often creates even bigger legal problems than the original offense. Accepting accountability early can make a difficult situation far easier to resolve than trying to escape it. >> Through July 11th, approximately 23 times totally a loss of at least $575.94. >> It's going to have to come off anyway and it's not going to be very comfortable with the cost. Okay. On the 17th of July 2024, officers received a report from a public store about a female employee who had performed fraudulent refunds by scanning barcodes on receipts without the actual items. When they arrived at the scene, the store manager gave a statement explaining what had happened for himself and the gift card for >> Okay. So, she's been refunding items from customers or what? Oh, no. Just refunding >> it. Just scanning a receipt. >> Now, you don't even need the item. You can scan this bar code on the receipt. >> Okay. >> All those items refund the gift card. >> Got it. Okay. >> And then keep loading the same gift card over. So, this has been going on now. >> You said 3 weeks for video. Yeah. For like 3 weeks under multiple times. >> We're trying to figure out what statute that would be. I think it's be more of like a fraud thing. So, she I guess she's doing like the the fraudulent refunds where she's taking the the receipts >> and then refunding it and then putting onto a gift card. >> You know, they've made it easier now. You don't even need the items to approve refund. You scan the receipt bar on the receipt, right? >> It'll pop up all the items on the screen. You just swipe them all over the refund and then you scan the gift card. You're done. >> Would that be scra or is that still just that? >> And she's been using the gift card to buy other items on her own. So, we've got her for three weeks. 6 what stat that would be. I'll call future. >> He's got a dollar. I don't know what >> I think it was like five something. A quick phone call so we know what charge uh one second. Hey charge. Um me and are here at Publix and I I haven't done one of these in a while. So the I guess the manager here at Publix is saying that the their employee I guess over the course of 3 weeks has been basically getting receipts and refunding items on those receipts and then putting it on to a gift card and then using that gift card for herself. Is that scheme to defraud? Okay. All right. >> The officers confirmed that the case would be handled as a scheme to defraud. Meanwhile, the store supervisor provided additional information about how long the fraudulent activity had continued. >> We have an association performing fraudulent transactions from June 14th through July 11th approximately 23 times totaling a loss of at least $575.94. She admitted to performing these fraudulent transactions, issued a statement to that effect. >> That statement was completed today. >> Okay. Um, so between the 14th of June and the 11th of July, she did about 23 uh fraudulent transactions. How is she doing this? >> She's pulling up saved saved refunds, scanning them on the register when no one's around and applying them to her own gift cards. >> And when you say saved refunds, how does that work? >> So they were refunds that were already administered to customers. Okay. So, she was going back into the system and >> recalling it, >> recalling the refunds. Okay. >> Is that like a system that anyone can get access to or >> customer service staff is trained on how to use it? >> Okay. >> Is there an employee code or something she has to punch in that identifies as her? >> Yes. >> Okay. Her name is on her code and name on the bottom. >> What's her code? >> 481. She used the most. >> 481. Employee. It's an employee code. >> Yeah. And she used 881 on the occasion, mostly 481. >> 881. Okay. So, she would recall these refunds out of the system and then what would she do with them exactly? >> She would process the refunds onto her gift cards. >> Okay. >> And then use those gift cards in the store for personal purchases. >> Okay. >> The suspect's entire fraudulent scheme had now been clearly established. [music] Shortly afterward, the store also provided surveillance footage to the responding officer as additional evidence. >> I'll kind of show you a couple She's this one right here. >> Yeah. In the back. >> Okay. >> So, all she does, she'll recall it, >> keeps it in her pocket. >> Mhm. >> Scans it. >> So, the customer will basically come up and return whatever item they have. >> Correct. >> And then she returns it for them and then goes [clears throat] back in. >> She scan. You'll see her scan. It's a white girl. [clears throat] Okay. That's still about for each one. >> She going to do this with the other one. >> That's actually how she finally gets associates saw her >> the [clears throat] screen like that. You know, there's nobody there. >> So, they saw her like act like she was processing return, but nobody was there. >> Yeah. See right here? She's going to recall see like a return that was already in her system. >> Mhm. She's like looking around making sure nobody sees her. >> Yeah. So >> after confirming the facts, the officers approached the suspect. She was clearly overwhelmed by the consequences of her own actions. >> Today we have to take it down to county jail. Okay. Cuz it's considered fraud. Okay. I I I unfortunately I don't have any better news for you. I'm sorry. >> I need to call my husband. Come get me. >> He's not going to be coming get you from here. >> As long as you're cooperative, I'll let you make a phone call from our station. Um it can't be too lengthy. Just let him know, hey, I got arrested at Publix by the police. I'll be going out in county. They'll probably give you like a some kind of bond tonight and then he can just bond you out. So, I don't think they're going to keep you mandatory overnight. Okay. But unfortunately, they they do want to press charges. Okay. >> Um, >> before I ask you any questions, I got to ask you some questions. Okay. But before I do, I just want to read you your rights that you understand. >> By that point, it was clear that any regret came too late. As the officers continued with the arrest process, she became even more emotionally overwhelmed. Um, I'm going to take this watch off. That way it's a little bit more comfortable cuz it's going to have to come off anyway and it's not going to be very comfortable with the cuffs. Okay. [laughter] >> Just put your hand inward like this. All right. Can you grab my backpack? >> Where's your backpack at? >> Right over there. I have a scooter, too. >> Well, your I'll let you call your husband. That way you can come get that stuff. Do you want him to come get your backpack as well, >> or do you want to bring it with you? >> Leave it here. I guess I'm going to go face everybody out there. >> All right, just walk out. Kimberly Elaine Candelario was charged with felony fraud swindle for obtaining property by communication over $300 and lararseny theft. A quick gain through dishonesty can cost far more than it is worth. Integrity is always worth protecting, especially when trust is part of the job. >> I don't want to go back to >> investigation going on right now. Allison, you can't go nowhere right now. >> Investigation what? >> Because she's accusing you of taking her PHONE RIGHT HERE. NO >> 13 now. Get the off of me. Just get off of me. >> On the 25th of September, 2023, police received a report about a dispute that occurred after the victim believed another woman had taken her phone, causing the incident to turn into a robbery. Here's what happened when police arrived at the scene. >> Okay, she come in my store. She want a >> came relax. And uh >> listen, >> excuse me later. I don't have my report. >> Okay. >> I came to her store to see if she help me charges, right? >> I want to go. I'm not going back. >> You can't go. You can't go nowhere right now. I don't want to go back to >> There's an investigation going on right now. Allison, you can't go nowhere right now. >> Investigation what? >> Because she's accusing you of taking her phone right here. Your car over here. >> I had to get my stuff from the pantry right here before they close. >> Okay. But she's saying that her phone is missing. >> I'll be right back. >> No, no, no. No, it ain't about to be right back. Alice, >> your place is right here. >> No, no, no. It ain't about No, it ain't about 10 minutes. >> I need myself. Okay, >> Alice. >> Alice, >> what? I'm right here. >> Where's the phone? >> I don't have no phone. >> Where's the phone? >> Check my stuff. I better check my jacket. Everything is empty. >> Okay. Where's the phone, Alice? >> Everything is empty. >> Where's the phone? >> Everything is empty. >> Alice, where's the phone? Just tell us where the phone is. >> I DON'T KNOW. >> YOU WANT YOUR PHONE BACK? >> YEP. >> You want your phone back? What kind of phone is it? >> Uh, it's Samsung. >> Samsung cell phone. >> Samsung cell phone. Yes, sir. >> Alice, where's the Where's the phone? Alice. >> The woman repeatedly tried to leave and insisted she didn't have the phone, but when officers tried calling the number, things turned out very differently. >> Where's the phone? I can hear it. >> You don't hear nothing. That's his phone that just Where's the phone? I CAN HEAR IT. >> I HAVE IT. >> ALICE, WHERE'S THE PHONE? I CAN HEAR IT. >> I have it, >> right? I can hear I can hear I can hear something on >> I can hear something ringing. You have it on ring or or vibrate >> ringing. >> I don't have no phone though. I can't >> take everything. Yo, >> can you please just >> Can you please just let me go? >> Where's the phone? Alice, >> I don't please just let me go. Just I just want to go right here. >> Alice, stop playing around. Alice, stop playing around. >> Stop talking. >> All right. You can hear on It's like on this side. >> Alice, >> I told >> How much is your phone? >> How much is your phone? >> Yeah. How much is it worth? >> Okay. But how much is it worth? >> $1,000. >> Okay. >> $1,000. >> All right. Alice, >> did you see her take it? >> No. >> SHE CHARGED MY PHONE. PLEASE, I can go. I got >> You can hear it, right? >> I got to get my phone from here. >> I can hear it. >> I got to get my phone from here. >> Listen, if you don't give it a phone, >> please. >> You're You're going to get arrested. Okay. >> I just WANT TO GET MY STUFF from here, please. We have to deal with this. WE HAVE TO NO, I NEVER CAN HANDLE MY BUSINESS. Just walk me to this door right here, please. >> Like last time, right? When you had to go to the hospital and you had to get braces and stuff like that, we took you over there. We said, "Look, take care of her. Make sure she get taken care of. and things like that. >> No, we need to worry about this phone first. Alice, just give us the phone. >> Let's do what we got to do. >> You give her the phone. >> Alice, everything is being recorded right now. >> Well, the camera's hearing everything. >> The door is right there. >> The phone could be heard ringing on her. Yet, she continued to deny having it. But after officers handcuffed and searched her, they finally found what they were looking for. was your first. >> Yes. >> Wow. Just to make a phone call. He >> ra No, he call the police. >> He rather call the police. I said to make a phone call for me. Yo, y'all just stay in my mother business. Hate you guys. >> I swear to God I hate you guys. All you got to do is stay. >> Take it. I don't care about >> nothing. Yo, I can't even get my thing. >> Yo, this crazy >> What started as a simple theft became increasingly tense as the suspect's resistance turned into a prolonged struggle. >> I'M NOT. KILL ME RIGHT NOW. >> NO, WE'RE NOT GOING TO KILL ME. NO, I'M NOT GETTING THAT CAR. NO, I'M NOT. >> I AM NOT. NO, I'M NOT. >> ALICE, >> now I'm car. >> Alice, it's not that serious. Alice. Alice, IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS. >> NO, >> ALICE. ALICE, >> RELAX, ALICE. ALICE, RELAX. [screaming] >> NO. >> 13 now. >> Get off of me. >> Just get off of me. >> Get in the car. How come I was in your face? Yo, you get off me. >> Three phones. Three phones. Get off me. Get off me. >> In the end, Alice was charged with first-degree robbery with a weapons enhancement and resisting arrest. What begins as a simple theft can become far more serious when a suspect chooses deception, force, and continued resistance. Cooperating with officers can prevent a bad situation from becoming even worse.
