[Music] Lt. Norman Staples: Tonight we are doing a stolen car mission. The purpose is to find stolen cars that are out rolling around. These are cars that are being actively used for other crimes. It's evidence-based policing and statistical analysis of the data that we collect, and that is focused how we look for stolen cars. So we don't do random stops. There's specific things that we look for at cars or cars' behavior, which indicate that the car could be stolen. And we use those factors to determine whether or not we're actually going to stop a car and then find out if it's stolen or not. Okay. Let me check that really quick. This started back in November of '21 when we noticed that stolen cars were increasing in quantity in Portland. So we wanted to find a way to address stolen cars. And our thought was that if we can capture the occupants of stolen cars, who may have been the ones committing the thefts in the first place and sending them to jail, that it could lower the amount of stolen cars that we're seeing out here Dispatch: Coming up to [inaudible] right now. Look like you might have got a good spike on it. Lt. Norman Staples: This program has been very successful, and we've done 14 missions. We've recovered 100 stolen cars. We've made 157 arrests. We've recovered 23 guns. We've arrested people that were just involved in shootings, meaning they committed a shooting two hours beforehand, and then we found them in a stolen car and arrested them. We've had quite a few high level captures with people that are prevalent in stolen cars, homicide suspects, robbery suspects. So right now, with how we're doing it's been working out very well.
