I started with the school resource [music] officer unit back when COVID was getting ready to start in August of I believe [music] 2019. When I started, it was more to help my family. [music] I was a new mom of newborns and I needed a schedule that worked best for our family. But I was quickly surprised at [music] how much I fell in love with that job. There's a lot of thought or if [music] you talk to any SRO, they'll tell you that they are the sole officer for their own little community. And if you think of it in that aspect, there's something really special about that. After graduation of last [music] year, I got transferred to a new position with the police department. I'm now part of the media relations unit. Because of the timing, I didn't get to say goodbye to my campus and we have built some major relationships. Working at a school is like having a village of people that you just work hand-in-hand with. So to walk away quietly didn't seem [music] quite right. So right now we're driving to Skyline High School where I'm going to meet with Officer Workman. [music] He is going to be taking over Skyline's campus. The cool thing about today is he doesn't [music] have to go in blind. I'm going to get the chance to introduce him to our admin team, our security [music] team, our counseling team. We're going to get to walk the campus so that he has a really good idea of the layout, where our security concerns are. We have our camera system which has over 190 cameras. >> [music] >> So he'll get a feel for the campus security-wise and our goal is to make sure that he feels as comfortable as possible and not like he's going into a new school blindly. >> [music] >> And I am really excited that I get to go and take the keys and hand them over to the next officer who hopefully will [music] be able to carry on and do amazing work at that school. It is such a special school and I'm excited that I get to say goodbye and pass the torch. >> I'm looking forward to starting a new school [music] year here at Skyline High School. The opportunity to get to know all the students as well as the families in the community. I'm going to be great to build a step in the classroom and [music] build the educate students on real life and um what it's going to be like interacting with cops [music] outside of the campus in the real world. >> I like to tell my students that you have 4 years [music] in high school, 2 years if you're a junior high SRO, where you're going to get a chance to try and make adult decisions for yourself. Now, sometimes those adult [music] decisions have positive outcomes, but sometimes they're going to have consequences. [music] But, the beauty in dealing with those consequences as a police officer in the school is we get a chance to learn from them if we want. [music] There's a really cool balance in that.
