[Music] [Music] hello everybody and welcome back to five minutes with the chief uh this is U one of our ways to try to keep you informed on what's going on at the Mesa Police Department we had some questions uh reference a homicide that happened here in Mesa tragically we had a woman that was killed uh by her son um over a dispute over a cell phone uh when we started giving out information on this uh horrific event that happened in our city we gave out just little pieces of information as we found uh it fit one of the criticisms was why didn't we give out all the information everything we knew in its entirety during the investigation we try to keep that compartmentalized uh we try to protect the Integrity of the investigation not only for later prosecution but to make sure that we don't give out too much information as we're doing interviews and conducting U uh the the interrogation process where we might tell somebody something they wouldn't have known without that so just know that we give out as much information as we can when we can uh in each of these investigations second thing I want to talk about is when you see something say something and let me tell you how that became important uh the Phoenix Police Department had a homicide uh actually Multiple homicide where uh an estranged uh relative uh killed uh all the members of the family I believe at uh two or three different people and one of the people was actually uh burned uh after the crime had been committed um incredibly uh horrific crime scene very hard uh not only on the investigators but the community itself uh some days later uh there was an incident in Mesa where a suspect was talking to some friends and talking about how despondent he was and and how upset he was at the family and basically said that he was going to do the same thing that happened in uh Phoenix uh they were right on Target they called the police they told us everything they knew and that the guy was respond at what he had planned to do and ultimately within just several hours of getting this information we were able to take that person into custody who had already gone and had a gas can uh had the means uh to not only commit the murder but then to actually burn the body as well um if those people would not have been diligent and really realize that this person was capable of what they were doing we too could have suffered that same horrific crime here in Mesa so if something seems suspicious somebody says something that catches your attention please call the police let us help vet out that uh we'd rather you call us and be wrong than not call us and miss something that's uh could be that tragic so again if you see something say something please call the Mesa Police Department uh I want to talk a little bit about hiring uh we are continuing to hire uh police um recruits uh we have an academy class starting in January we just had a class graduate November 21st if you're interested in a career in law enforcement or know somebody that is uh just know that over the next uh couple of years the Mesa Police Department is going to be hiring in the area of 200 to 250 officers uh it's good for the community and it's a it's a great time for growth and uh to build some stability into the department uh the holidays are here uh I want to talk just about that a little bit uh I'm actually filming this particular segment uh the day before Thanksgiving but by the time that you all see it will be creeping into uh the Christmas holidays um in the East Valley uh we have What's called the East Valley DUI task force that encompasses Phoenix Scottdale Tempe Mesa Chandler Gilbert uh there will be DUI enforcement programs going on most nights of the week during the holidays please don't drink and drive uh you're putting yourself and others at risk get a designated driver uh have a cab waiting uh there's even uh apps now that you can get on your phone where you can have a cab pick you up just by sending a text message so uh use the designated driver or use a cab and uh keep away from drinking and driving I think the numbers out of Mesa alone were 600 people were arrested last year for drinking and driving during the holiday task force during your holiday shopping the Mesa Police Department is running an operation which we are calling Fade to Black Friday and we will have undercover officers uh and surveillance team set up at the malls and local retailers uh watch watching those people coming and going from the parking lots uh and trying to ensure the safety of your belongings what we need from you in return is to try to keep things out of sight uh cover up things that are in your car make sure you do lock your car and uh if you can park in an area that's either well lit at night or it's populated during the day thanks for your cooperation and uh try to help us help you keep your items safe again we enjoy an incredible relationship with the citizens of Mesa one of the things that makes us success ful is your trust and with your trust comes our commitment to being transparent and keeping you well informed of what's going on if you have questions please call and ask if you want us to put something specific in this video I'm always willing to answer it uh but we're honored to serve and uh we're proud to be Mesa police officers thanks for your time [Music]
