Hi, my name is Detective Jeff Herpinger [music] with the Mesa Police Department. I'm a community action officer assigned to the central division. We were recently [music] contacted about an opportunity to meet with Carter, a 10-year-old on the spectrum who had questions about being a police officer. This is a great chance to engage with our youth in our community and to hear his perspective. I'm really looking forward to it. >> What [music] kind of training do police officers have? >> Police officers have to do a lot of different type of training. They go to the police academy where they learn defensive tactics, uh, laws and policies and procedures of the police department. Uh, they also do defensive tactics, firearms training. So many different areas that we have to do [music] and learn. And then we go to a field training officer out on the street. So we ride with another officer that trains those officers on the street to be solo officers. >> What do police officers wear? >> I carry a radio and I'll say, "Carter, Carter, come in. Carter, are you there? >> Okay. [laughter] >> And I carry a pepper spray, flashlight, our taser, and here's our [music] camera. All right. And I carry handcuffs. >> Handcuffs. >> And I carry my firearm, which is very, very dangerous. Right. Only for trained people that can use it. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And then this is my police uniform. Do you know what that says right there? >> Police in Arizona. >> Yeah. Mesa, Arizona. So, I work for the Mesa Police Department. What is your favorite of your part [music] of your job? >> My favorite part is every day is different. I never know what's going to happen each day. That's the exciting part. >> Why did you choose to be a police officer? >> Because I always wanted to help people all the time. That's what I wanted to do. >> How long have you been a police officer? >> 22 long years. I got something for you. Is that okay? Can I give you something special? >> Yes. >> Okay. One, let me get it one second. Because you came all the way down here and you did a special interview of being a of a police officer, I wanted to give you something in return. Do you think you would like something like this? >> A cup. >> I think you need one of those. Here is a special coin from my chief to you. >> It's a chief's coin. >> Chief's coin. >> Yeah. That's for you because you came all the way down here and did a great job. >> Yeah. All right. Thanks for meeting with me today. >> Two radio go police station. We'll be right there. >> I'm going to [music] hang this up in my office. Can I do that? Bam. And you do this. Yeah. You do the fire, the bomb like boom. >> All right. [music] That way, too. Good job. Well, that was a fun time.
