What Portland means to me is home. I was born and raised here. My family's here. My kids are here. I never expected to become [music] a police officer. The turning point was the Portland Police Cadet program. When I was in high school, a Portland Police [music] Cadet advisor came to my social studies class and was talking about the program. I decided to apply and I was accepted. >> I grew up in Southern California, but when I visited [music] Portland, I felt that this was the place that I could thrive and put [music] my roots down. Everything that the city had to offer in terms of nature, public transportation, [music] I really fell in love with the city. >> I applied [music] twice with Portland Police and I was denied twice, but I really wanted to work for that agency. Really just motivated me more to, you know, achieve my goal. [music] I reapplied one more time for the third time and I ended up getting hired. >> I had this preconceived idea that >> [music] >> law enforcement was going to be all about being physical, but what the surprise me was just how much human interactions that [music] I need to have with people. >> Getting in the face-to-face contact is extremely important. It builds [music] that trust. It builds that communication and that's that's how you start relationships. We contact so many [music] people in the community, but we build so many great relationships with our co-workers. >> This job, you need to be part of a team. You need to be able to depend on your co-workers and your sergeants. >> It's important to trust your co-workers because we go into very dangerous situations every day >> [music] >> and it's good to know that they have your back. >> What this job is about for me is helping people when they really need [music] it. We see people on the worst days of their life. >> As a detective, our responsibility is the investigation. [music] We are there to gather facts and build the story. >> Giving someone a voice [music] and letting them know that we care is something that really speaks to me. >> I stayed because I believe [music] I can make the city better. >> To serve Portland, you have to be the best of Portland. And I believe Portland Police Bureau [music] is the best.
