The following is a detailed account of a deadly use of force incident involving a member of the Portland Police Bureau. Viewer discretion is advised. We understand the public's desire for information as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency. The Portland Police Bureau is releasing this initial bodywn camera footage related to a recent police use of deadly force incident. The investigation is not yet complete. As with every police use of deadly force, this incident will undergo multiple layers of review, including criminal, internal, and training analyses. On Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, at 1:55 p.m., two officers assigned to the Central Precinct Neighborhood Response Team were conducting follow-up investigation into an unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, and criminal mischief case. They did not know the suspect's name, but they spotted him on Northwest 16th Avenue near Northwest Overton Street. >> Police stop. >> They told the suspect he was under arrest, but he ran from them. >> You're under arrest. The officers reported that they saw the suspect had a knife in one hand described as a largeblade hunting knife. Numerous officers responded to assist and worked to help contain the armed suspect. However, the suspect ran for several blocks in an attempt to evade the police and avoid being taken into custody. Officers saw the suspect with the knife running towards members of the public, including a mother and her child. During the chase, the suspect ran toward a tire repair shop in the 12,200 block of Northwest 19th Avenue, still armed with the knife. Portland Police Lieutenant Brent Maxi, who was in the area following a nearby meeting, struck the suspect with his police vehicle at low speed in the tire shop parking lot. Lieutenant Maxi was not in uniform and did not have a bodywn camera activated. No other officers captured the event on their cameras. However, in this footage, Lieutenant Maxi can be seen entering the parking lot just before the use of force. Okay, he's at the left swap. He's still running north on 19. A ppb traffic crash reconstruction team revealed that the police vehicle struck the suspect at a closure speed of between 3 to 5 mph. The impact caused the suspect to fall down briefly, but he immediately jumped up and kept running away. He did not appear to be injured. The suspect broke into a nearby business and barricaded himself into the basement storage area. Officers surrounded the area and evacuated the business. He refused to surrender and during the incident destroyed a police drone and damaged a police robot. The incident was not resolved for several hours until an officer used pepper spray and a canine was used. >> Is he close? >> The suspect hit the police canine multiple times with a metal pipe. Dog on him. Push the door open. PUSH THE DOG. POCKET. POCKET. POCKET. >> THE K9 was able to re-engage and apprehend the suspect so officers could take him into custody. >> Don't resist again. Don't fight or else force. >> Your dog. Okay. >> Oh, he's fine. >> Okay. >> The suspect identified as 33-year-old Joshua R. Curus was arrested, treated for injuries, and booked into jail. A knife was recovered and seized as evidence. According to Portland Police Bureau policy, using a vehicle to strike a suspect is a category 1 use of force because a motor vehicle used in that manner is capable of causing death or serious physical injury. Therefore, the Portland Police Detective Division and Internal Affairs Division are investigating the event as a use of deadly force. This concludes the summary of the August 12th, 2026 deadly force incident. Here is the unedited footage from officer's cameras. Police stop.
