And we have preliminary results of what the toxin could be and a decrease was detected in his system. >> I feel like I ought to be behind bars and I'm scared. >> You are not You are not >> I'm scared. I've done nothing wrong. >> This is elementary school teacher 64-year-old Judy Church. Her boyfriend has just ended up on a hospital bed after being fatally poisoned. As Judy remains unaware that police know she is behind it all. >> So you're telling me you did not poison him? >> I did not poison him. >> Because after months of turning to the occult, keeping secret voodoo [music] dolls and laughing as Leroy Crawford took his final breaths, they are now faced with an insane homicide plot. >> This is fun. Wakey Leroy. >> And an even crazier grandma at the center of it all. >> Why would Leroy be telling his family that you're poisoning him? >> Because he's a little piss ant liar is what he is. >> In the early morning hours of November 11th, 2022, 911 was called to a local residence in Massachusetts following a report of a man who seemed to have ingested something. When EMTs arrived, they discovered Leroy Fowler stumbling to sit up, speak, or function. He was rushed to a nearby hospital while his long-term girlfriend Judy Church explained that she believed he was suffering from an overdose of some kind. >> For hours, medical professionals scrambled to try and find out what was wrong with Leroy, unaware that the woman who held the answers was at home portraying herself as his devastated partner. >> Are you telling me he's dying? >> No, I'm not saying that, but I'm just saying >> They would have to >> But I'm saying We're trying to figure out what put like what How did he get there? >> Cuz when you said that >> When the drugs involved like the doctor just said he's in critical condition, right? So obviously that's just something where when we hear critical as state police Unfortunately, just that >> I mean I heard last week they were going to do dialysis. >> Yes. Yeah, they're going to do that. Yes. >> No, they are going to do that cuz their all his numbers were coming down. >> So that's why we just in these situations the police department reach out to us, we come out and obviously I've had plenty of times like last week I was at a shooting in Lawrence. The guy gets shot. I can't >> I don't I don't care about him anybody else, all right? >> I'm just saying we preemptively will do things and then people >> It doesn't result in death though. Like this unfortunately this is just my line of work and it's it's very uncomfortable. I understand that. Um so by no means am I trying to add stress to you. Um it's just with the District Attorney's office it's just what has to be done. Um at least that into this. >> I have known him to do some recreational drugs. >> Okay. And um that's what type >> Part of what we're trying to figure out. >> Yeah, figure out how we want to do it. Okay. >> [clears throat] >> Did he do uh in the morning? >> I have no idea. >> Okay. Cuz he when he was up at 4:00 >> Mhm. >> Um but then you were kind of up around 4:00. You didn't see him at least to your knowledge. You didn't see him. Do you know if So and when he um I'm assuming when he would he would snort it. >> What? >> Is that accurate? >> I guess so. I guess >> Okay. And then have you ever seen him take Does he snort them? Does he ingest them orally? Um and you don't know? Okay. Cuz I heard that you thought he might have ingested something. >> I was because this guy had seen this before. >> Yeah. >> Like right happen. Uh it was like 48 hours of hell for me. >> Oh wow. >> Because um you know Like I said he was out and um I he had left before and then came back. You know, and he's got his you know, little secrets and um >> And what do you mean by secrets? >> Um >> We're not here to you know, get you in trouble. >> I'm sorry. I'm not >> I'm not trying to interject. It's just part of my job. >> need to know everything. >> I'm not trying to interject into like your personal life. >> Um >> I know your son's here. >> You you know, you can anything on the street, anything. People sell it all and he knows them. So, that's all I'm going to say. >> Okay, I know what you mean. >> But at the hospital, doctors found no drugs. They found something worse, traces of antifreeze in his system. Unfortunately, the hospital was unable to save him. After several days, Leroy took his final breath, leaving behind a son he loved dearly and a family he was incredibly close with. The devastation was palpable and even before learning about the antifreeze, his family was already pointing the finger at his girlfriend, claiming that she had been poisoning him. Immediately after, police brought her in for questioning. And when police met her in the lobby, they discovered Judy on her phone, visibly deleting messages and videos. What was she deleting exactly? Some of the final moments of Leroy's life as she looked on, taunting him. Here are just a few snippets. >> That's the way to the bathroom. He hasn't gotten far. Maybe 6 ft. I tried to help him and he pushed me right into the door jamb, so he's not taking me out with him. >> The footage gets even worse, which is exactly why Judy was so desperate to hide her phone. But as the interrogation begins, she seems to think she's going to get away with the horrific video she's recorded, videos of her laughing at the supposed love of her life's last moments alive. >> Oh, okay. >> She's not having any deleting messages. >> Okay. All right. >> Uh just so you know, same as yesterday, body cams still recording. >> Okay. >> Um I'll probably end up just propping it here. It's easier than wearing it. It can get in the way. >> Okay. >> Uh >> I'm scared. >> Nothing to be scared about. Like you said it >> I'm not under >> No, you're absolutely not under arrest, okay? Yeah, yeah, sorry. I wasn't trying to snap you, but I just The lady >> things and I I just don't want you to want to open them. They just can. >> Um, we'll wait till he comes back before we talk. But how are you doing since >> I'm awful. >> Yeah, obviously. >> I'm I'm confused. I'm as confused as his family because you know, I I got reports that things were looking good. >> Yeah. Now, when we're talking to you, it seemed like it was >> No, when I was in the hospital, but I don't know how it all changed from there. >> Yeah. So, all right, so you're probably wondering why you're you're here. Like I said, we need to talk about the death, go back go back over the facts now that we know it's an actual death and then move on from there. Um, before I start, um Do you need to just read you your rights? >> I didn't do anything wrong. >> Yeah, I just I like I'm I'm required to read Miranda warning yeah, I have to read it. I know, I know. >> Police read her her rights, though clearly she's not happy about it. Evidently, she only likes to laugh when someone else has their life on the line. >> So, I can say no, I'm not going to talk to you? >> You can say whatever you want, yeah, yep, 100%. It's up to you. Like I said, >> Can I refuse to sign this? So, what does all this mean? I don't understand it. I I I feel like I'm going to be behind bars and I'm scared. >> Just so you know. >> I'm I'm not I'm not I'm scared. >> You're not under arrest. >> I have told everybody >> I'll turn you duty. I I don't want to get you worked up. I I don't want to get you You are not You are not under arrest. You You are not like in custody. You're going to walk out this door after we talk to you. I understand that this is very intimidating thing and it's just when you read it to people, the reaction that we're getting right now that I can't say that's not uncommon. Um I'm guaranteeing you that you are walking out this door. Like you are not under arrest. Like you're not in handcuffs. We came to your house. We asked you to come here of your own entirely. Um I'm not lying either about that. So >> And if we had your son in here, if we had your son in here, if we had little Leroy in here, if we had anyone else in here that we were asking we would do the same exact thing. Okay? >> Mhm. >> Finally, she dries her crocodile tears and signs, agreeing to speak to the police. After going through her routine for the week, they get to Friday, the day that Leroy was brought to the hospital. >> He woke up at 4:30 Friday, right? He didn't stay up all night till 4:30? >> Um he was up when I checked on him at midnight. >> Okay. What was Okay. >> Cuz it was his birthday. >> Okay. Yep. >> So you went in his room at night? >> I went in say happy birthday to him. Asked him if he wanted to open his presents. He said, "No, I'm good. I'll do it later." I said, "Everything okay?" >> Mhm. >> [snorts] >> Uh >> Did you then go to bed or did he go to bed? >> He went out in the back room, like I said. >> When you say the back room, is that that room you walk into? That's the back room. >> Yes. Yes. >> So he went into the back room and then you went into your bedroom. >> Mhm. And it was around 6:30, 6:35-ish. I he comes into the bedroom. Um I'm a light sleeper and he woke me and he said, "My legs won't work. I just fell three times and you know, walking through the kitchen area to the bedroom." He had to go to the had to go to the bathroom. And I said, "Well, let me help you." And clearly he was legless. >> Mhm. >> Um [clears throat] and he's a big guy. I did my best. I got him to the bathroom. He took kept telling him hold on to the wall so you don't fall. And he did and he he peed, I guess. He >> Oh, he wasn't complaining of his legs? >> Oh, he told me he had fallen two times, but he he had the body to bed that I already helped him pee and then he got into bed. >> Mhm. >> So, um After that, he said to me, "I'm going to die. You know that, don't you?" And I told him stop. Yeah. That's what he usually says to me, "Stop." >> Mhm. >> If I ask questions about what he was doing, "Stop." >> Mhm. >> And so, he's not so used to back at him. And then, >> Why do you think he said that? >> I think he knew. I think he knew things were wrong. >> Mhm. And that's the first time he's ever mentioned something like that? >> No, he has actually He has actually said those words to me before. >> Um so, that's 6:30. Um I know the uh phone call was made at about 8:00 in the morning. Um what was after in that hour and a half window up until the phone call? >> Well, I guess it's like 7:00, 7:15. >> Okay. >> And uh he um "Where's my dog?" I think he said, "Where's my dog?" Or if did he have to go to the bathroom again? I I don't I don't recall. >> to, Salt? >> Salt, yes. He loves his dog. And I think he went to reach for him and he fell out of it. So he wrapped head wrapped himself up in the blankets and slid right off the bed to the floor. And now my bed is up you know, that high. >> Yeah. >> And uh >> Did you hear a thump? >> Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I got up. I put a pillow under his head. >> Where were you when that happened? >> In bed. >> Oh, so you were in bed next to him? >> Yeah. >> Oh, okay. Got it. Okay. Wait, okay. Sorry. >> And um I put a pillow under his head thinking, you know, he'll just you know, whatever it is sleep it off on the floor. But he just continued to um try to get up and try to get up and try to get up. And I tried to help him. You know, and I I get him to a point and he you know, he'd fall and push me against the wall. You know, the doors in in the closet and I'm like this is you know, Larry, you just going to settle. I said, you know, just stay where you are and I'll make you comfortable. He was just um try struggling and struggling and even when he got to the hospital struggling to get out of that bed. I I don't know what it was in his head that he needed to you know, there was this something driving him. >> That can happen. Look at him also mental state man. >> Yes. Yes. >> Yeah. When he told you he fell a couple of times, what was your reaction? Were you surprised by that? >> Yeah, I was actually. >> Did you ask him? >> I asked him I asked him if he was okay. You know, that's really you know, he made it to the bedroom. >> When he said I fell, what do you picture in your head like just standing up and like you know, like >> Stumbling stumbling. >> Like kind of like unsteady? >> I didn't hear it so it couldn't have been >> Like >> Like the >> Like a big Yeah. >> Like the noise he created when he was around the room, you know. >> Helping is a really big lie here because the footage she took shows her doing the exact opposite. For our team, this was hard to watch and we don't even know this man personally. Yet, she was able to sit there recording him with a smile on her face. Let us know if this looks like helping him to you. >> This is fine. >> In total, there were 13 different clips that she took that morning ranging from 7:29 a.m. to 7:59 a.m. 30 agonizing minutes in which she recorded the supposed love of her life in pain. >> But, I did ask him, "Do I need to call an ambulance?" because as he was kind of flying around the the bedroom, um I just kept hoping, you know, putting my hand or, you know, guiding or pushing things away so he wouldn't hurt himself. >> Yeah. >> Uh you [clears throat] know, with the sharp corners of the bed and things like that. >> Mhm. >> And uh he I would ask him, "What's my name? What's your name?" And he wasn't responding. He didn't didn't talk to me. Talk to me. And then uh I guess a little after he he said, "Call the ambulance." And I did. >> Mhm. Okay. >> Leroy begged for an ambulance, but it took some convincing before she actually called one. >> What? What? What is it? >> [clears throat] >> Tell me what. >> Leroy, call an ambulance. >> Yeah? >> [sighs] >> Okay. What did you take? >> She began filming at 7:29 and 911 wasn't called until 8:03 a.m. But, don't worry. She has a theory for police on what happened. >> How would you describe like his behavior? Like, did he seem like he was like high or drunk or >> Yeah, he was out of it. >> Having like a >> He was out of it. He was like a lifeless drunk, yeah. >> Okay. All right. So, you called 911. Um I don't actually have any masses. You two are the only ones in the second floor, right, the whole time? There's nobody else lives there. All right. I kind of figured that, but um you called 911. Um did you notify your son or anyone? Did he ever come up to like help Leroy? >> Well, Douglas had texted me, you know, "Are you okay?" [clears throat] He did know what was going on, but the floor you know, it's he's Yeah, something on the floor. >> Yep. Yep. >> Uh-huh. >> So, he texted to see if you were okay. >> Mhm. >> Um and then I'm assuming first responders came. And then what? Can you just walk me through what that was? >> Um you know, they would they said, "Did he take anything?" And I said, you know, "I've seen this before." And um um I know it was wintertime of the 2019. >> Mhm. >> You know, when everybody's kind of really locked up tight in their house. >> Yeah. >> And uh but very similar. I had to follow him around you know, and that all you know, he did had another story going on in his head and I >> Mhm. >> and he spoke gibberish and um I you know, truthfully, I didn't know what to do. He um >> [snorts] >> s- s- had legs, you know, I mean, but he was stumbling. >> Mhm. >> And um I didn't know what to do. >> Yeah. Now, it's 2019. How did he recover from that? >> He slept. >> He slept. Slept it off. So, you didn't call an ambulance he >> I didn't. >> But you said 2019, although it was similar, was it as bad as what just happened? >> Yeah. >> Oh, it was? >> Mhm. >> And okay. >> Mhm. >> So, maybe you just got lucky. >> Cuz I'd be asking him, "What did you take? What did you take?" No, I I couldn't even figure >> What do you think was going on? >> Huh? >> What did you feel like was going on with him? >> He was uh drugged. >> Okay, after all that. >> Obviously. >> So, you thought it was like maybe like a medical something like that. >> Mhm. I know. >> Oh, that >> I I don't know. I don't know what that is. I mean >> I interpret drug this as >> I look at cuz um you know, you're out. >> Mhm. >> And he really wasn't out. >> Okay, so he's still like moving around and >> Mobile. >> Yeah, cuz you overdose usually like they're nodding off and like they're >> Mhm. >> They're out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree. >> She didn't ask what he took. Instead, she taunted him. Once she finally did call 911, after close to 2 hours of this struggle, according to her own words in the footage, he was brought to the hospital, where initially they believed he would make it through. >> I don't know. It just seems [music] like cuz even when I was talking to you, you were like, "Why are you talking to me? He's going to be fine." >> Yeah. >> Yeah, I got that vibe. >> I mean, wouldn't you have heard that as good news? >> I don't know. Yeah. >> Things are going as they should, not that your organs are shutting down. >> Mhm. Yeah, I wonder if um cuz obviously that day when we talked to the hospital, we I you know, at least I got the vibe that it could take a turn for the worse. I I don't know. I don't want to speak on the hospital's behalf. I wonder if that's your family. Nobody wants to go to someone and say, you know, especially cuz what if they're wrong and he pulls through and they're like, "Well, why did we say all this to her?" You know, so I don't want to speak on their behalf. I'm making a assumption, but you know. Um okay, so that's Saturday. And then, um, who notified you that he passed away? >> His son. >> That's the one. Okay, so Leroy has still talked to you. He hasn't been >> Yes. Yes. >> jamming you. >> And I And I gave him the whole story. I I texted him the whole thing, you know, it's the truth of as I know it and it it can't change. I mean >> Well, facts >> making any facts of facts. >> Yeah, exactly. >> That little saying, "Facts are facts," is going to come back to bite her in the butt because at the hospital, they found a pretty big fact and she's about to find this out for the first time. >> I even told Leroy last night uh, he kept saying there's an unknown toxin in his blood. And he said it wasn't wasn't it wasn't um I don't know, whatever else it could have been. And uh it it's an unknown and I guess everybody wants to know what the unknown is and so do I. And then I said, "Well, he cleaned out the basement and he crawled up under the cottage. There was obviously evidence of uh, critters." >> Mhm. >> And um maybe he cuz I heard, you know, rat poop, you smell it, it it die. >> Mhm. >> I think >> Nasty stuff. Nasty stuff though. >> so I mentioned that, I mean, that could be that could have been it and he got back to me and I said, "No, the doctors This is already He's already gone, you know, it's >> Okay, so I do know So, obviously, we've been doing our invest, you know, well, he's been on it since Friday. I was notified Saturday. Um death investigation's underway. But, um we have been able to talk to the hospital and we have preliminary results of what that toxin could be. >> Mhm. >> Um, and it antifreeze um, was detected in his system. So, how That's what the preliminary results are. We need to wait till the official lab results come back, but we talked to the doctor. That's what is preliminarily determined to be in his blood. Um so, that's why I was asking you about like things like that. Um trying to figure out like how that could have gotten in his blood. >> I don't even know if he had antifreeze at the house. >> Okay. Sometimes cleaners, windshield washer fluid True. Yeah, sorry. I think I interpreted like pre- prelim- like it's a preliminary test result. It's not like the lab result came back and said antifreeze, just preliminary. So, take it with a grain of salt when I say antifreeze, but something like a I guess like maybe like a cleaner or a toxin or >> So, you're Something like that. You're thinking he drank this himself? >> alcohol I'm Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how he could have >> Like moonshine, stuff like something like that. >> Like you said he had um or I mean I don't know. I don't want to It's your your loved one, so I don't want to ever imply anything, but you said you saw him drinking orange soda in the morning. And I'm And I'm just I'm just thinking I have an open mind as a detective. So, I'm just thinking well, he was drinking something in the morning. Um you know, could that have been in there and I'm not implying your loved one was doing that. >> Mhm. >> I'm just trying to That's why I kind of danced around it, but I'm trying to piece together how I'll say at least a liquid toxin, maybe not antifreeze cuz you don't officially know what it is, how that could have gotten in his blood. Like, could you ever see him I guess doing that? Would that even make sense? >> No. >> No. Okay. Does he drink his orange soda? Like, is it something he pop in a can? So, it's not like it could have been he got it. Okay. So, the soda's out >> of the picture. And you didn't drink cuz I'm assuming if that's what it is and it got in his system, you had to have drank it. I'm assuming you don't eat. I mean, unless you drink it directly from like the bottle. So, you're saying you don't even have antifreeze in the house? >> [clears throat] >> Or something of that nature. I'm not like an expert on that. >> I'm not I'm not an expert on toxins, either, but >> Yeah. >> things would be under the sink. >> Yeah. >> And it could be things out in the back. He likes to fix bicycles. >> Yeah. >> Um but I don't I don't >> [clears throat] >> know if there's any toxins in that. >> And you >> kind of >> kind of now me telling you what I know that you don't see him doing that. That makes sense. Okay. >> No. Not ever. He kind of likes himself, you know, he's a >> Okay. >> Yeah, he's [clears throat] a um He's a private man. He's a proud man. >> Yeah. >> Um likes his world to be his own world, you know, and you're not in that fodder for the rumor mill. So, just knowing that about him, it would be just total opposite. >> Of what he would So, he wouldn't do something like that. >> Um okay, cuz you >> But then he said to me, "I'm going to die." >> Mhm. >> Which is fun which is odd, I actually like I said. >> You've also been told that we were in the past has thought that he's been being poisoned by somebody and he doesn't feel good and it's been an issue. So, this is what we're trying to piece together how he feels that way and then he has what they determined to be antifreeze in his system. >> Okay. Um I don't know how this antifreeze is in his system. >> Okay. >> I make him coffee frappes. And yeah, he's a bad boy, you know, he's a cheater on me and stuff. And um one day I brought him his broth and uh he says, "You're not trying to poison me, are you?" Yeah, I laughed, took a sip of it myself. >> Yeah. >> You know, but it was kind of an ongoing joke between us. >> Mhm. >> And >> When was that? >> I don't know, a year or two years ago. >> Oh, so he's been going with this joke for a while then. >> Yeah, I mean, just just us fooling around that >> Yeah. >> you know. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> Police have motive for the poisoning because, [music] did we mention, Leroy was also seeing someone else? Judy has no idea that she's handing police her motive on a silver platter. She's too busy taking the opportunity to talk crap about the other woman. >> I would say that's my you know, that's that's just how much I love that man. >> Dynamic's been going on where Barbara's been in the picture as well as you. So, I understand that would be challenging to say the least. Has it been like like a year or >> No, longer. Since 2016. >> Okay, so okay, so like six years. That's been going on. But, prior cuz how long were you with Leroy for? You know, in like a dating relationship. >> 2012. >> I'm just trying to piece it together. If the toxicology results do come back that it is antifreeze, is there any enemies of Leroy? Is there anyone that you could see doing this? Anyone [clears throat] that would have the ability to do it? >> [snorts] >> No. It's [snorts] Barbara. crazy. >> Okay. Would she have like the motive or drive to do that? Like you think? >> Yeah, cuz he leaves, you know, he comes back to me. He always comes home to me. I don't talk to her. I don't I don't want to see her. and all do is bump into her. She's just evil incarnate. >> Evil in what? >> Incarnate. >> Oh, incarnate. Okay. >> She's just presents. She's Yeah, she has all her little minions that do things for her. I'm like, "Why don't anybody have their own brain? You know, can't they think for themselves?" I don't not just saying that because I hate her. >> Hate is a bit of an understatement here because behind the scenes, Judy wasn't just complaining about Barbara and calling her names. She made a voodoo doll with her name on it and choke written around the neck just in case it wasn't clear enough what she wanted to do to her. >> Let's put it this way. At his At her house, I'm probably And at my house, she's a snake. >> Does he try not to bring her up around you? >> Yeah, he will every once in a while. Mostly, it's because she's you know, as dumb as a bag of rocks. You know, thinks she knows everything. Thinks she's knows Leroy's father and Leroy's father issues and you know, these people are past dead before he even met this woman. And how do you know How do you know these things? And But she was very manipulative and she'd do anything to have him back. >> So, you could see her being capable of >> I'd be the one being poisoned. You know what I'm saying? >> [laughter] >> So, you could see her not see her being capable of doing something to this to to Leroy. I know you said maybe you, but could you see her doing that to Leroy? >> [music] >> Yep. Yep. >> Okay. >> Yep. >> At trial, however, Barbara had something very different to say. >> How many times would you and Mr. Fowler be over and then get back together? >> Numerous. >> So, when you would tell him it was over, was it ever really over? >> No. >> When Mr. Fowler would tell you it was over, was it ever really over? >> Who would always be the one to come back? >> Him. >> During the course of your relationship with Mr. Fowler, did he ever propose to you? >> Yes. >> How many times? >> Twice. >> Um did you say yes? >> I did the first time. The second time I must have said yes, but I don't really remember. >> And then is it fair to say that after you said yes, the relationship went off again? >> Probably after obviously, yeah, after that. >> You told the police that if you locked the door, he would just kick it in. >> Yes. >> Did you have a nickname for her? >> Yes. >> What was the nickname you had for her? >> Grandma. >> Why'd you call her grandma? >> Cuz she looked like one. >> Um and so if we found antifreeze in your house, >> Okay. >> right? Um what would you say if we found your fingerprints on the antifreeze? >> It wouldn't be. >> It wouldn't be. Okay. >> Well, unless I bought it, but I don't even remember buying antifreeze. Anyway, you need antifreeze for? To do >> your car? >> Is it your in your radiator? Keep things from freezing. >> Yeah, we live in New England. It's November. >> I mean, okay. >> Yeah, and it's going to prevent freezing. >> Well, we usually get you know, if I get an oil change or things just stuff like that. >> Okay, so then when you use antifreeze in your house, your fingerprints wouldn't be on the antifreeze. >> Motor oil bottles, any any of that. That's >> That's more like Leroy buys that type of stuff. Um would you do a polygraph so we could just clear you and move on to the next person? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> But of course how my heart is going to be. Yes, but yes, absolutely. I have nothing to hide. Did I put anything >> Put any poison in his food or drink? >> No, I didn't. >> So you're telling me you did not poison him? >> I did not poison him. I loved him. I wouldn't harm a hair on that man's head. >> You weren't upset that he's bouncing back and forth between you and Barbara. >> It upsets me, but you know, he comes home to me. He loves me. We have the future, the plan. >> Um is there any reason why Leroy's family would say that you were poisoning him? Cuz I know you mentioned you went right to the the coffee drink or No, is it a milkshake? Is it ice >> Coffee coffee ice cream or something. >> Coffee ice cream, you know, milkshake frappe. >> Coffee ice cream and frappe. So, >> I [clears throat] said that to him the other day. Just the other day. Just the other day and that's why they got it in their head. It was a joke between Leroy and I. >> Okay. >> You know, he's always saying, you know, They know how much I love that man. So, >> I'm just I have to ask the questions. >> Cuz that's fresh in her mind. I I have done something. >> Did you Did you tell her that on the phone or like text text or talk?
